Braves 3B Chipper Jones, using the
anonymous username U Kno Who, posted comments on the Braves blog for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, confirms Braves beat writer David O’Brien.
…exxcceellllleent…i love it…and always wonder is this has ever happened on MetsBlog.com…i guess we’ll never know…
Chipper on himself and the Mets…
“Just heard that Hoss is done after is contract runs out after next season. Pretty reliable source that is close to him said that he is seriously thinking about retiring soon. Said that he is tired of listening to all the Mets fans on a Braves blog dominating the conversation with David Wright talk. Also said that he is tired of owning the Mets for 15 years. Its someone elses turn.”
…jeez…of course his local nickname is Hoss…how perfect…apparently, there are just countless reasons why i hate the Braves…it just never ends…
Chipper on Shea Stadium…
“I will be deeply saddened to see Shea stadium go. It was where I hit my first homer and we have had so many memorable games…Im gonna make sure that I get a stadium seat for my third son, Shea, so that we will have a momento. Hopefully the new stadium will provide the same kind of atmosphere that the old one did. I think it will. I used to be a chicks fan but I’ve gotten a chance to hunt with some of the guys from RF, so I’ve become fans of theirs.”
Chipper on the Romance…
“Girls like the romance. Whatever u do, it better be original. Flowers and candy are nice, but every woman loves the bling. At least that’s what I’ve experienced. But what do I know, I haven’t had the best luck with the ladies.”
Chipper on the Mets getting Johan Santana…
“Santana is as good as it gets. There is no doubt that the Mets have a strong pitching staff, provided they all stay healthy. I’ve faced him a couple of times and it’s no walk in the park. Whoever we have pitching that night better bring his A game. That being said, he is human. Maybe we will get the game tapes from some of the Indians games last year. They had pretty good success against him (5-0).”
…first of all, well done by Chipper Jones, who i love to hate…it’s difficult for me to give him compliments, but that was a pretty cool thing to do for his fans…also, as much as it infuriates me, i love that he stokes the rivalry between the Mets and Braves…he seems to appreciate it, from both sides…and i can dig that…
In a post to Mets Geek, John Peterson revisits the Seven Worst Games from 2007.
…dear god, man…move on…we’re less than week from pitchers and catchers…for 2008…
Brooklyn Met Fan gives his thoughts on Pedro Martinez’s role in a cockfight, writing…
“Although I’m personally not a fan of watching animals kill other animals the fact remains it’s legal and ingrained in some cultures of Latin America. Hey I don’t think people around the world should eat monkeys either but I’m not gonna get too worked up about it.”
Lastly, Mets Mole takes a look at Five Unlikely Factors that Made Johan a Met, including Tom Glavine’s disastrous performance on the last day of the season, of which he concludes…
“And for these reasons, the Shea Faithful should give Glavine a roaring standing ovation when he takes the mound in Queens the final week of April.”
…i like Mets Mole, who is very critical of me at times, but that’s a good thing…nevertheless, this is an interesting line of thinking…would Johan Santana be on the Mets right now had glavine instead thrown a gem helping to pitch the Mets in to and beyond a one-game playoff…something tells me he would be, and glavine would be gone regardless because his departure had more to do with going home than running away…and with or without glavine, the Mets still needed to acquire an ace…
As noted yesterday, a video of Pedro Martinez
and Hall of Famer Juan Marichal taking part in a cockfight in the Dominican Republic was posted and then quickly taken off of YouTube on Wed.
PETA assistant director Dan Shannon issued a letter to Martinez, which called for him to ‘publicly apologize to fans’ for participating in such a ‘cruel and barbaric activity.’
Cockfighting is legal in the Dominican Republic.
Martinez issued the following statement late yesterday…
“I understand that people are upset. This is part of our Dominican culture and is legal in the Dominican Republic. I was invited by my idol Juan Marichal to attend the event as a spectator, not as a participant.”
…of course, according to the video, martinez tossed the chicken in to the ring and cheered him on…which is what PETA is probably all hot about, i would think…if this isn’t ‘participating,’ what is…
The Mets issued a statement as well, which read…
“We do not condone any behavior that involves cruelty to animals. We understand, however, that in many other countries, activities such as bullfighting and cockfighting are both legal and part of the culture.”
…what’s interesting is that the Mets nor martinez issued any sort of apology in either of those statements, as PETA requested…instead, they went the cultural relevatism route…
…frankly, the Mets and Pedro Martinez should have issued a second statement thanking Roger Clemens, whose face is plastered on the back pages instead of martinez’s and a rooster…
