Read: Johan at the Bat
By Chris Mazzone - Feb 8, 2008 11:26 am

At MLB.com, Marty Noble writes about Johan Santana’s ability to improve the Mets…at the plate.

According to Noble, a Silver Slugger Award clause was included in the contract Santana signed last Friday.

Santana’s agent, Peter Greenberg, as quoted by Noble…

‘Johan didn’t ask that we include one in the contract…But we know our client…We’ve told him, ‘No, think doubles, Shea plays big.’”

…it’s always fun to have a pitcher that can hit, just ask the three Marlins fans who i’m sure enjoyed watching Dontrelle Willis kill the Mets to the tune of 12 for 31 with three home runs and eight RBI  over the last three seasons…

Mybe it’s just me but I don’t want my 137 million dollar ace on the basepaths where he can injur humself…

    • bonatom says:

Exactly… like we need Johan streching his hits into doubles and end up pulling a hammy.. no Thanks…. All I ask is that you Master Bunting

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

exactly, thanks alot greenburg. the only thing worse than santana hurting himself on the mound would be watching him pull up and limp into 2nd base.

    • dykstraw says:

Johan is very athletic. He is not a fragile flower of a pitcher on the basepaths.

  2. ebfnyc says:

He is the type of pitcher that will hit doubles and really drive the ball to center for many homeruns

  3. cyclone says:

Off topic, but I am sure as hell glad that we don’t have to face Dontrelle at the plate anymore…

  4. mackey_sassers_arm says:

I thought Johan’s contract was worth a little more than $1.5 million. Is that per year, or total over 7? Either way, that’s a steal.

  5. VCarver says:

Yeah, but they better read him the riot act when it comes to running the bases. Avoid trying to stretch singles into doubles and things like that. Maybe he should only bunt or swing for the fences. If he connects at least he can trot around the bases. And if he strikes out he can rest up on the bench. He’s too valuable to get into those Dontrelle-type collisions at the plate.

  6. BaltimoreMets says:

Those are Dontrelle’s actual numbers against us? Holy hell, I knew he hit us hard, but I didn’t know it was that hard!

    • Saltzy23 says:

An odd lot of hitting pitchers we have. Pedro who couldn’t hit a beach ball on a tee, Ollie who may have the worst swing I’ve ever seen, El Duque who could probably pinch hit if we needed him to, and Johan who supposedly has the ability but hasn’t seen MLB level pitching in, in guessing, forever….

How much work do you think Willie gives him this year in ST?….Hes gonna have to pitch 4-5 innings in his games if he wants to have a few AB’s each start….

      • MetalMet says:

Actually, Johan had a double, a walk and a run scored against the Mets this past season at Shea haha

        • Saltzy23 says:

I should remembered. I was there. I was there in Game 162 when Dontrelle lit it up too…

Seriously though. How much work do the SP’s get this year during Spring Training? I want them ready to go come April, but we really cant afford any injuries to any of them before the season starts….The thought that we actually get to see Johan pitch in a game for us in like 2 weeks makes me giddy….

        • kowalski69 says:

i was at that game sitting on the field. i was amazed more by him than any other pitcher i’d seen pitch at shea all season long…

dontrelle hitting a salami on us was a close 2

  7. MetFanInDC says:

I definitely agree with the fact that Johan shouldn’t try and stretch anything. Having him on base with Reyes up at bat would be tremendous help.

The blog is still as great as ever, but how many of you can honestly say that Johan news makes it better? Maybe it was just the day-in and day-out tension of the trade.

    Swing for the fences Johan!

  8. Giaco says:

yea but can he lay down the bunt?

    Glavine sure could….

and can he slide like that Japanese pitcher we had…forgot his name… (double of Randy Johnson)

    • MacD81 says:

      Mr. Koo!

I was at Shea the following day and some guys were carrying a sign around reading “Koo’s your Daddy!”. A reference, of course, to the Yankee chants towards Pedro of “who’s your daddy!”. Great stuff.

  9. ebfnyc says:

I’m surprised Greenberg didnt try to work in Farher of The Year awards, best at-bat song choice incentives and and Citi-Field mound initiation fee.

    • zen says:

greenberg had to get the mets back for giving them reyes for free

      • ebfnyc says:

Meanwhile Reyes probably can only afford a condo on a low floor at Trump World Tower. Don’t you think Mets and Greenberg were thinking any leg injury and Reyes would cease to be a special player. His leg was hurt a few years ago. It took him a while to realize that he couldn’t learn a different way to run (that a coach was pushing). Maybe the mets were less scared to give Wright (less reliant on one feature and a stronger-looking guy) more money.

    • SuperJoe says:

      Hilarious. Best comment in weeks.

      • ebfnyc says:

I know what you’re thinking Joe; “if Johan plays all three of the three versions of the song Amazing, in Seal’s new album in one game (per AB), does he get paid each time as if it were a new song?” … Contractually, probably.

  10. SheaVendor says:

“just ask the 3 Marlins fans…”

    Great line!!

  11. CaseStreet says:

I think Johan should leadoff and let Reyes swing for power. JK.

  12. Charlie says:

Brian Schneider might actually see some decent fastballs when Johan starts!

  13. CaseStreet says:

That was some harsh reading. Does Noble regularly write this poorly?

  14. Kalihan42 says:

Nice! He can double as an extra pitch hitter in long games.
