Read: Wright On Leadership

by Regis Courtemanche on February 9th, 2008 at 2:57 pm

In an article for the New York Times, Ben Shpigel catches up with David Wright and discusses a range of topics.

Wright, on leadership:

“In my eyes, there’s a difference between trying to force myself into a leadership role and taking accountability. I’m as accountable as the 25th guy on the roster as to why we didn’t get the job done. We’re all in this together. We win as a team, we lose as a team.”

Shpigel, also writes:

“Wright is scheduled to arrive in Port St. Lucie, Fla., on Sunday evening, a full week before position players are required to report. During the off-season, Wright all but eliminated trips for endorsement and promotional opportunities so he could concentrate on his workouts. “

…it’s good to hear d-wright is making baseball his primary focus, as i feel he has always done despite various off-the-field appearances…the 25 year old is maturing as a player and as a person, and it’s great to watch that evolution…

News: Mets Pursued Foulke

by Chris Mazzone on February 9th, 2008 at 1:17 pm

According the the Associated Press, the Mets were among several suitors for RHP Keith Foulke, who recently agreed to a 1-year contract with the Oakland Athletics.

“Foulke auditioned for about 20 teams in Phoenix last month. He also considered offers from the Arizona Diamondbacks, San Diego Padres and New York Mets.”

spring training is rapidly approaching, but the Mets know the bullpen is still a bit of a question mark…they made a run at a cheap arm that’s had some success late in games in the past…it’s good to see while they’re ecstatic about adding Johan Santana, they aren’t resting on their laurels…

Read: National League Outlook

by Chris Mazzone on February 9th, 2008 at 12:56 pm

SI.com has released their team-by-team breakdown of the National League entering spring training.

On the Mets, they write…

“The addition of Santana makes them an NL favorite and helps them move beyond last September’s embarrassing collapse, when New York squandered a seven-game NL East lead with 17 to play and missed the playoffs. This team was one victory from the 2006 World Series and wants to win now.”

…if you’ve been tuned into metsblog, and i know you have, then you’re up to speed on what was said about the Mets… but the article is still a nice quick read to get caught up on where the rest of the national league stands after a particularly active offseason…

Quote: Leyland on Santana in the NL

by Matthew Cerrone on February 9th, 2008 at 8:55 am

During an appearance on WFAN’s Mike and the Maddog, Tigers manager Jim Leyland had the following to say about Johan Santana

“Well, it didn’t bother me one bit (laughing).  Actually I think we (the Tigers) beat him three times last year, we really blasted him, we beat him 1-0, 2-1 and 2-0 (laughs all around).  He’s a great pitcher, he’ll be a great addition to the Mets.  I think in particular, I think he has a chance to be even better (in New York) because, and is this not being critical, you got the eighth hitter and the pitcher, and that’s what worries me about Dontrelle, the eighth hitter and the ninth hitter in the AL might have 20 HR.”
