Last night on SNY’s Mets Hot Stove Report, I gave a quick report on why attending the Johan Santana press conference at Shea Stadium last week was rather awkward.

Good job, Matt. I would’ve been right there clapping with you, buddy…

    • Tapeball45 says:

I was clapping at my home and I was the only one there..

    • cleonsvan says:

Matt – dude – We’re all really proud abut seeing you on TV and representing the faithful One thing – you gotta try to smile a little You look like a deer in the headlights. I know its hard but – this is supposed to be fun right?

  2. kowalski69 says:

nice quib about waiting for cowbell man to start a lets go mets chant!

  3. Woodside20 says:

Although I was obviously not in attendance I agree with the awkward feel of the press conference. I personally was flipping out in apartment while on a whole the audience reaction seemed pretty sterile.
P.S. Anyone who can allude to cowbell man during a professional sports telecast deserves WAY more than a minute of air-time.

  4. dykstraw says:

very funny, i think this was your best one yet.

very smart of them to give you some airtime each week, too. gives metsblog readers a reason to tune in even though we probably know everything they’re going to discuss, or would find out shortly anyway.

i hope they’re sending you down to psl.

    • A Mets fan in Austin TX says:

Matt – are you going to be a weekly feature on Mets
Weekly as well? What about spring training?

I enjoy your last few feature spots, as you offer
a prospective from the true hard core Mets fans
instead of the more casual fan. Keep it up!

I will be emailing SNY to let them know how many
      of us readers feel.

    • FBones24 says:

Totally agree. I would never tune in if it wasn’t for the reminder on metsblog the day of Hot Stove. I think it was very smart of SNY to include Matt as part of the team. His insight from a fans perspective is fun and real. Great job!

  5. GravediggerHebner says:

Matt I’m very glad you made a point of stating that it was your first press conference. That means you’ve been to one more than I have, so I have no experience on which to base the following:
It was a press conference, not a pep rally. Applause would’ve been out of place/inappropriate in my opinion.

    • toomanyuniforms says:

Whatever — it’s something of an polite reflex to clap when someone is introduced, and I doubt he was betraying any impartiality, given that a major focus of his blog is not being impartial — it’s the experience of being a fan.

And let the guy wear a T-shirt. He shouldn’t be up there looking like a jack*ss with his shirt unbuttoned to his navel.

  6. Slimting says:

Very good. You’ve spoken like a true fan. I also was flipping out while watching it on TV.

Also, good job with the shirt this week.

  7. longtime fan says:

Nice job. You look and sound more comfortable each week. Just watch out for hitting the ring on the table. It sounds like an small explosion.

    • longtime fan says:

and yes, lose the t-shirt. It was actually distracting.

      • Xavier22 says:

agreed – go with a v-neck t-shirt if you’re going to go with the open collar look. I’d also recommend a blazer

But big improvement over the white crew neck shirt you wore last outing.

  8. guierllNO MOta says:

    LOSE COWBELL MAN

seriously, he is more annoying than the wave, just keep your custom made shirt that you bought yourself with your cowbell that Will Ferrell made funny and you have ruined…you are worse than the wave

Stay out of my way when I am trying to watch baseball, I don’t even know why you come to games since you don’t watch you just parade around hoping people notice you

I assume my post will be pulled at some point for being negative but man what an annoyance that guy is…

If you guys happen to go to shea and see a guy in a custom made jersey with the name “Donkey Guy” and some idiot making Donkey noises as loudly as possible all while standing in your way…that will be me.

Only person ever allowed into Shea that was more annoying was Fran Healey

    • kowalski69 says:

      i support cowbell man.

    • ohboy says:

      that post took balls…

I would have probably been a little more diplomatic with my presentation, but overall, I agree with you.

I’m sure the Cow Bell Man is a very nice guy and loyal Mets fan, but the antics are not needed…

    • Xavier22 says:

Nothing is more annoying than the wave. And I can’t believe they actually have a sign on diamond vision encouraging people to “do the wave” Nooooooooooo!!!

      Cow bell man is OK.

    • cpai76 says:

Seriously, Try havng some fun while you are at the baseball game. Cowbell man makes it more fun, he comes down he gets people into it he rallys the fans with Lets go Mets chants. If you arent going to the ballpark to have agood time then stay at home and be stuck up from your couch.

Maybe your just jealous, because everytime i see cowbell man walking down the aisle i hear peopel clapping for him, do people clap for you when you walk around the stadium?

    • cleonsvan says:

don’t you mess with cb man – leave him be – he’s a true Mets icon.

  9. metsin080910 says:

Bravo Matt. Hey, if you ever get a full-time job on SNY, I’ll be more than happy to take over MetsBlog.com … lol

  10. Zoe says:

The clapping and crickets chirping thing was great. I gotta say, too, that Kevin Burkhardt is just the nicest guy–dontcha think?

  11. guierllNO MOta says:

I’m sure he is a nice guy, but at Mets games he is an annoyance.

Heard Mike Vick is a nice guy too….

    and OJ, very nice guy….

  12. Ed Q. says:

No disrespect to any fan or fans, but in a nicer way I have to agree with MOta. I do prefer fans who watch the games and cheer rather than the ones (cowbell man included) who decide to put the focus on themselves and away from the game.

Give me more Signman and fewer cowbell man

    • toomanyuniforms says:

I STRONGLY agree. I don’t like the fans who try to draw cameras with little regard for the people sitting around them (what’s it like sitting behind a Signman) or the game on the field. I lump them with the idiots on cell phones behind the plate who wave whenever the centerfield camera light goes on. All about getting on TV. We have a perfectly good mascot — the best, in my opinion. We don’t need self-appointed mascots. Want self-promotion? Try public access channels.

    • cpai76 says:

you dont like Cowbell man but yet you like sign guy, a guy who stands up with huge signs and blocks the view of everyone behind him. you have no problem with that? im guessing you dont get seats behind sign guy?

      inconsistent much??

  13. guierllNO MOta says:

Yes…I am NOT a nice guy…like Cowbell Man

    I also can’t spell…see GuierllNO…should be GuillerNO

however, provided that bumbling fool doesnt get in my way too much, at the end of the game I can tell you exactly how the game played out where as he ca only tell you what it felt like to pose with fat chicks and metrosexuals

maybe he eventually catches a “wow Keith got fat” comment….i heart mustaches

  14. DAK442 says:

I got no beef with Cowbell Man, other than the bizarrely placed hyphen. He’s 100x better than the tools in the upper deck who aren’t satisfied just doing the wave, but have to chastise fans who are too engrossed in baseball to join them.

  15. Jawlkin Jointz says:

matt it was good but it seems a bit forced and pre-recorded. it also seems that you just read what you said in the post.

  16. KinersKornerman says:

Matt, you look good, but with a dark sports jacket, you would look Mah-velous. Tie optional, but would add a little additional class.

  17. Tapeball45 says:

And nothing says “dumb fan base” like obsessively chanting our player’s last names until they acknowledge that we’re there.

    Cowbell is nothing—
The brooklyn dodgers had a whole “Sym-Phony” Fan Band…

I wish there were more fans like Cowbell man..
    I want dedication like that.
That is what makes Met fans.. Met Fans…
