Buzz: Phillies, Benson Close To Deal
By Mike Nichols - Feb 13, 2008 11:05 am

At his blog for the News Journal, citing the ‘player’s agent,’ Scott Lauber reports RHP Kris Benson is close to finalizing an agreement with the Phillies.

Benson, who missed all of last season due to shoulder surgery, is 68-73 with a 4.34 ERA in his seven year career.

…ha…i love it…this Mets-Phillies rivalry is growing and getting better by the day…can’t wait for anna to stew the pot even further…

…hat tip to erik for the link…

UPDATE…

According to Todd Zolecki of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Phillies and Benson agreed to a minor-league contract.

Take him and his wife. Easily the most erratic pitcher I’ve ever seen. His lack of emotion and energy reminds me of Glavine too. He’s not gonna survive Philly.

  2. bonatom says:

I am sure he will get a warm welcome back at Shea =)

  3. CaseStreet says:

JOHAN SANTANA MOTHER EFFERS! WOO! YEAH!

Why not divorce this slore years ago?

      • cyclone says:

Didn’t he attempt to? I know he cheated on her a few years back…

        • He cheated on her? With who the batboy?? He only has her cuz he has money…he looks like a ghoul next to her….almost Rocky Denise-esq

        • mrose says:

          still….how far can LOOKs go…

I mean, i dunno about most people, but even if its a minor league deal, its still professional baseball and its possible he becomes a good 3-4 starter at some point again…

She is good looking, not drop dead gorgeous without a lot of air brushing, and an absolute horror on a microphone or in any interview…

Couldn’t he divorce her and find a normal girl???

          Oh well thats just me

hahaha.. Matt is hilarious.. Every time Benson is mentioned, he puts a pic of his wife up..lol priceless.. BTW Benson is about as exciting as watching an episode of The Golden Girls.. The man is lifeless.

  7. QnsNative718 says:

…And yes, a chant of ” AN-NA BEN-SON” would be great if he pitches at Shea…

Not related to KrisAnna, but from a blog from Roid-ger’s testimony:

Just a thought as the questioning of the Rocket gets rolling:

Since he’s under oath, any chance one of these Congressmen could ask Roger what the heck actually happened when he threw that bat at Mike Piazza?

He didn’t really think that was the ball, did he?

    Sorry to digress. Just thinking.

  9. foul bunt strikeout says:

wow guys, this pretty much cancels out any edge we got with the johan trade. I guess we’ll have to focus on the wildcard now!

what a mediocre pickup for a medicore city with terrible fans….great combo in my mind

  10. AppleInTheHat says:

I know we are all excited about the Johann Santana pickup, but am I the only (perverted) one to notice that slowly, the Mets are losing their collection of hot wives and girlfriends? First it was Benson and then Piazza (he’s married to a Playboy centerfold). And this past offseason we lost LaDuca who was always good for a young hottie or two. I hope Ryan Church is married to some young attractive woman so we have something to look at in the stands during pitching changes.

  11. QnsNative718 says:

    Schneider’s wife is pretty decent…

  12. stumped1 says:

hard to believe that when he was traded to the o’s the consensus was that it was a horrible deal, and we cant deal our #3 starter. now the phils are fools for bringin him in cheap. the phils are gettin a decent starter if hes healthy. hes no big difference maker, which is why he was tradable, but he aint no bum either.

  13. therealsince86 says:

This is a good deal for the Phillies. They may not have added Santana but they have made a lot of little deals that have potential to help them.
Feliz although not great is better than what they had. Lidge if he can hold it together makes their pitching better. Jenkins has the ability to replace some of the Rowand power stats. Again, its a lot of if ands though. Kind of what we would have been saying if we did not get Santana.
Either way Benson on a low risk deal is much better than the #5 they had going in and they may have even less depth than we do.

  14. stickguy says:

The phils are getting some age on them outside of the core guys.

The OF is also going to be interesting. With jenkins and Burrell flanking Victorino, the CF will be covering half the field. No idea how fast Werth is though.

They will also pile up plenty of Ks too.

Hopefully they miss Rowand, and Rollins doesn’t replicate his career year (Howard may have had his too). Utley though could have a huge year. Everyone else is a spare part.

I can’t wait to see their rotation in action. With any luck Hamels has back issues again, Myeres implodes as a starter, and Eaton, Moyer, Benson, etc. all get lit up early and often.

Forget about the mets, the Phils are a team that could do real well, or comepletely fall apart (although they will still win a fair number of games just because of their few big hitters and the park, even though CBP will molest their pitching staff).
