Quote: Johan is an Ace, so is Pedro

by Matthew Cerrone

As noted earlier, Pedro Martinez arrived in St. Lucie today and talked with reporters outside the team’s minor-league complex.

Martinez, on pitching alongside Johan Santana

“I know Johan is an ace, and when I get the ball I’m another ace.  Every time I get the ball…I’m the ace that day.  I’m the guy everyone’s expecting to have fun and that’s going to be me.  I believe Johan is probably thought as being as much of an ace as I am.”

Martinez also said he is not really concerned with who will be the team’s opening day starter.

i love Pedro

metsftw February 14, 2008 at 6:07 pm

i was just about to say that! he’s awesome.

mbeli February 14, 2008 at 6:09 pm

seriously he just looks like he’s a kid out there, you gotta love that energy.

mbeli February 14, 2008 at 6:08 pm

Man I can’t wait for this season to get going. I love the coverage on this site and SNY, what did we do before this. I still can’t believe we got Johan. With all the talk about Johan and Pedro, I feel like we have the best 3 and 4 in the league.

utah53 February 14, 2008 at 6:12 pm

i totally agree with you. it’s hard to believe that people are dismissing 2 fifteen game winners so easily. i am very excited about this upcoming season.

Another Matt February 15, 2008 at 10:14 am

Don’t forget, the best 5 too, for as long as he’s healthy

Jawlkin Jointz February 14, 2008 at 6:16 pm

pedro = swagger

Al Kykyoras February 14, 2008 at 7:10 pm

Yeah…but I’ll trade swagger for a full season of health. Screw the swagger. Swagger doesn’t give you 6 solid innings per start.

rockets212 February 14, 2008 at 8:17 pm

but it does relax everyone which could lead to better maine, ollie, pelfrey(when duque is hurt), and defidentely santana. 6 solid innings is nice but its not the only thing pedro brings to the team.

sincekindergarten February 14, 2008 at 6:18 pm

One’s going to be a 15 game winner.

The other will be a 20+-game winner.

That is how much of an impact Johan will have on the NL–and how much of an impact Pedro will have on Johan. (Oh–Pedro is the 15-game wnner above.)

nrmax88 February 14, 2008 at 6:26 pm

He was talking about Maine and Perez as the 15 game winners. I think Pedro is going to win the cy young. He is in a walk year, and with all of the Santana talk he wants to show everybody that he is as good or better then Santana is when he is 100 percent. He is a competitor and I see some friendly competition between Pedro and Johan.

CaseStreet February 14, 2008 at 7:01 pm

He’ll have to have an injury free season for that and pitch 30+ and 200+. Let’s hope so.

rockets212 February 14, 2008 at 8:28 pm

I believe pedros goin to have a great year compared to what everyone else is saying, i see 16 wins, 195 innings, 185K and 29 starts. I would jump up and down in happiness if that actually happens, but pedro wont even finish in the top 5 in cy young votes. Santana, Peavy, Webb, Penny and someone else(Haren or Smoltz or even Oswalt) will finish higher. Still for a #2 those numbers, plus ollie and maine behind him. I am predicting 102 wins for the NYM this year and at least 7 all stars.

1)Santana
2)Maine
3)Pedro
4)Wright
5)Reyes
6)Beltran
7)Wagner
and hopfully others

JDuelz (Athens, GA) February 14, 2008 at 10:11 pm

Talk about some ridiculous expectations, especially with Pedro… Let’s hope you’re right.

sincekindergarten February 15, 2008 at 5:47 am

I wouldn’t go seven All-Stars. I’m happy with four. However . . .

Johan will go 22-5. Cy Young.
Pedro will go 15-7, with 195 IP and 200+ Ks.
Maine? 15-9 or so.
Ollie, because it’s a contract year, 17-10.
El Deadguy? 11-5 with six weeks off, when Pelfrey or Armas come up and go 3-2 or 4-1.

Going back to the All-Stars, let’s remember how many Giants went to Aloha Stadium last Sunday . . . one.

PhillR February 14, 2008 at 6:29 pm

W-L is no indication of a pitchers ability. It is an indication of run support. Stop the madness!

mets484 February 14, 2008 at 8:32 pm

a SP’s main purpose is to get a win as often as he can, or at least have his team win games that he starts…… a pitcher that wins a lot is a good pitcher

2 things define a pitcher’s value to the team, wins and IP… a pitcher that is valuable to his team is a good pitcher

run support does help though

BBmetsfreak36 February 14, 2008 at 6:34 pm

it also has alittle something to do with how they pitch. duh. it kinda hard to make up runs when the pitcher gives up 7 runs. for example in 2006, steve trachsel had great run support i believe he had 17 wins but say we give him great run support giving him 10 runs, a pitcher like steve is going to give up 11.

BBmetsfreak36 February 14, 2008 at 6:37 pm

although im not saying pedro or johan is steve trachsell either. considering we have no idea what kind of luck they get with run support, all we have to guess on how many wins they have is their pitching abilty so stop pmsing.

metsftw February 14, 2008 at 6:38 pm

steve trachsel had 15 wins (at least) 2 years ago and his ERA was 5 at least. W/L is a function of run support, and a terrible way to gauge a pitcher’s ability.

metsftw February 14, 2008 at 6:39 pm

why would you guess wins? who gives a crap? why don’t you guess their FIP or WHIP? perhaps K/9?

PhillR February 14, 2008 at 6:54 pm

It is one of the worst stats ever for evaluating a pitcher, why would you cite a statistic that has as much to do with a team’s offense and position player’s defense as it does the pitchers ability when evaluating the effectiveness of a pitcher?

Plenty of league average pitchers have won 15 games, this doesn’t change the fact that they are league average. Your point was that the Met’s 3 and 4 spots were good, probably above league average, then you cite a stat that may or may not have anything to do with that.

Just use ERA+.

Mets Fan on Wall St. February 14, 2008 at 7:08 pm

How about what the team’s winning pct. will be in their starts. Isn’t that what the bottom line is with an ace or top of the rotation pitcher…he gives his team a chance to win the game?

Did you see a few topics back about ESPN’s spring training preview what Minny’s winning pct. was in games Johan pitches?

Individual stats are just that and even when you throw in a lot of the sabremetrics they can’t fully explain how games are won. But I think with a better rotation this year we’ll see the results where it counts the most…the NL East Standings and hopefully the post-season bracket.

Slob February 14, 2008 at 7:20 pm

You know what “gives the team a chance to win”? Good pitchers. You know how you tell whether a pitcher is good or not? His individual pitching statistics, of which winning percentage is probably the least important. ERA, ERA+, and WHIP are all more effective measures of a pitcher’s quality.

PhillR February 14, 2008 at 7:42 pm

Mets Fan on Wall St.: This isn’t about sabr, its about the appropriate usage of statistics to quantify ability and predict performance.

Pitcher A is 15-13.
Pitcher B is 15-10.

Who is the better pitcher? Your use of the stat would imply pitcher B.

Pitcher A=Johan Santana
Pitcher B=John Maine

LeiterMilnerFasterStronger February 14, 2008 at 9:20 pm

DiPS is a fun one, too. (By def, normalizes for lazy leftfielders and “ole”-style infield play.)

johanfan February 14, 2008 at 8:01 pm

2007:
Tim Wakefield-17 wins
Johan Santana-15 wins

Need I ask who the better pitcher is?
Wins are a useless statistic.

Kalihan42 February 14, 2008 at 6:46 pm

I love Pedro. Only he can say he’s not sure who will be viewed the ace next to Santana and not say it in a way that makes him look like a tool

“I believe Johan is probably thought as being as much of an ace as I am.”

“Probably” more Pedro, but I prefer you go out on the mound with the grit of thinking you are still the team ace. More power to you Pedro.

Number41 February 14, 2008 at 6:49 pm

Question:
Michelle Damon or Anna Benson?

CaseStreet February 14, 2008 at 7:04 pm

That’s not related to the article. The question should be Pedro or Johan’s wife? (I vote for Pedro’s)

nrmax88 February 14, 2008 at 6:51 pm

Mark Kotsay has a nice looking wife also.

FBones24 February 14, 2008 at 6:57 pm

OMG, Mark Kotsay’s wife is slammmminnn! Amazing body.

Jawlkin Jointz February 14, 2008 at 7:06 pm

kindal iek ur wife

BSMITTYFDNY February 14, 2008 at 8:05 pm

Whats so great about Pedro is that he acknowladges Johan’s greatness as an ace but also says hey look over here at me, I’m stil Pedro Martinez and I will be an ausome ace too. Pedro reminds me a little bit of a Manny Ramirez as a pitcher in a sense. When I hear him talk I just think, its just Pedro being Pedro. But he backs it up with hard work and fierce competiveness. He looks like he is having fun but he takes this addition of Johan as a challenge for him to prove to all that he is still great. I love it.

Bacci February 14, 2008 at 8:24 pm

Last year we lacked a front line starter not because we didn’t have one, but rather because he wasn’t healthy. This year we had one; now we have two… life is good.

BSMITTYFDNY February 14, 2008 at 8:31 pm

I’d take our 1-2 punch starters over anybodys in baseball anyday of the week.

BSMITTYFDNY February 14, 2008 at 8:32 pm

Only 2 close are Webb and Haren from Arizona and they arent as established or proven over time yet.

CaseStreet February 14, 2008 at 8:47 pm

Pedro – Johan or Felix Hernandez – Bedard

No contest.

I can’t believe some say Smoltz Hudson or Hamels Myers as good as Johan Martinez.

therealsince86 February 15, 2008 at 9:27 am

What about Peavy/Young?

zen February 14, 2008 at 8:36 pm

heyman said pedro feels his best since 1998 on wfan.

who’s now: pedro or johan (tough planted firmly in cheek)

BSMITTYFDNY February 14, 2008 at 8:48 pm

who’s now what? What are you asking? Who is better? Honestly like to say Santana off the bat but a motivated, healthy Pedro very well may put up a better season than Johan. Its very possible. When healthy and challenged Pedro can be ultra dominant.

utah53 February 14, 2008 at 8:57 pm

it’s a joke dude…sportsscenter did a whole “who’s now?” thing this summer….by far the dumbest thing that show has ever done, besides hiring steve phillips of course.

BSMITTYFDNY February 14, 2008 at 9:11 pm

Oh. Sorry didnt see the show so didnt get the joke. My bad. But my thought on who will be better still stands.

BSMITTYFDNY February 14, 2008 at 9:13 pm

And I agree that Steve Phillips is the worst analyst and was the worst GM next to Duqette. Hated that Phillips was right about the Mets not winning the division last year.

itsmetsforme February 14, 2008 at 10:26 pm

no love for the budweiser hot seat?

utah53 February 14, 2008 at 11:22 pm

good point…i forgot how retarded that was.

utah53 February 14, 2008 at 11:27 pm

it also killed me that he was right about that. although i’m pretty sure he’s going to pick against the mets forever. it was nice seeing him eat crow about the johan signing…he was convinced that he yankees would get him, he went so far as to call the mets the most unimproved team in the bigs 3 days before the trade…

by the way he’s looking for mike hampton to be one of the biggest sleepers for the next season…big suprise…

GravediggerHebner February 14, 2008 at 9:58 pm

Two aces is nice but it would be even better to royally flush the Phillies and the Braves. I love the posts recently in which people type things like Johan>Hamels, excellent use of “greater than.” Warms the cockle fighter in my heart.

darkstar73 February 14, 2008 at 11:30 pm

It’s interesting to hear Pedro talking today about how worn down he was when he came back last year, and I can believe it. After that rigorous training he went through, he must have been tired, and for him to come back and still pitch well, shows you something. It also says that he might be able to pitch deeper into games then he did last year given he’ll be well rested and in a normal routine. Additionally, I can’t wait to see how his curve ball has come along. That was the one pitch he lacked a bit, and is usually the last one to come back, the hardest to get the feel back. So who knows, Pedro might be Pedro in ‘08. I think he’ll be good, but if he’s ‘05 Pedro or beginning of ‘06 Pedro even? Watch out…

SUPERMAINE THAT HOE! February 15, 2008 at 1:18 am

i mean seriously
is it humanly possible to hate this guy?

cpatrocks February 15, 2008 at 6:51 am

ask a Yankee fan that question

cyclone February 15, 2008 at 7:27 am

Pedro will always have love from me, from the moment he slammed Don Zimmer down on to the ground during the 2003 ALCS…I never laughed so hard…

Fregosi February 15, 2008 at 1:08 pm

Well, there is that little cockfighting video on YouTube.

Another Matt February 15, 2008 at 10:36 am

What’s the over/under on how many times Ryan Howard strikes out against the Mets this year?

I’ll take the over on anything up to 25 ;)

Fregosi February 15, 2008 at 1:03 pm

Does anyone else think Pedro looked like he gained alot of weight? His face looks all puffed up.
