Quote: Philly Needed Mets Rivalry
By Mike Nichols - Feb 14, 2008 12:29 pm

At his blog for the News Journal, Scott Lauber talked with LHP Cole Hamels at Phillies camp today about matching up against Mets LHP Johan Santana and a developing Mets-Phillies rivalry.

Hamels, as quoted by Lauber…

“[Santana] is a tremendous pitcher, on and off the field, just from what you see with his mannerisms on the mound. To go up against a guy like that will just make it more entertaining, especially for the fans. Developing that good rivalry, I think it’s what Philadelphia’s been wanting and needing.”

…it’s odd, with a short stretch of I-95 between them, you would think the two teams should have had a built in rivalry for years, but they haven’t…it’s only been brewing the past two seasons as both teams have been relatively competitive at the same time…

…hamels is spot on with his assumption…living in the philly area for a few years now, i’ve noticed Phillies fans craving a rivalry, especially one with the Mets…well, it’s here and this season should be certainly entertaining to say the least…

Watch what you ask for, you might get it.

    • BillyGoat says:

right you are, rM..I asked for a division title in 2007!

and Rollins didn’t say they would win 100 games…that is a goal…a lofty one that i believe has no chance of hitting, but a goal nonetheless

  2. MacD81 says:

At least Hamels seems to be down-to-earth about it. Unlike Mr. Jimmy “We will win 100 games” Rollins. My hope is the Mets come out strong in the first Philly series and really gives them hell.

    • Yeah, that’s what I was going to say. I like what he had to say and how he handled it. Where’s Jimmy Rollins though? Shouldn’t he have the camera in his face yelling at Santana and the Mets?

      • Volume11 says:

And thats why Hamels is the only legit star on the team. The rest are uncouth rednecks and trash talkers who can’t stand being our little brother and have to let everyone know how awesome they are any chance they get.

        • Fregosi says:

          Do you own a mirror?

        • mm88112 says:

Volume, you do understnad that the Mets have only finished ahead of Philly once since 2001 right? I doubt the Mets are in the Phillies’ heads as much as we think they might be. We really didn’t improve our lineup or bullprn, the two biggest problems on this team and Philly upgraded 3rd base, outfield, and they didn’t need an ace because they have one. And guys like Utley, Howard, Rollins, and Hamels aren’t red necks. Guys like Billy “I blow every big save” Wagner ius the definition of a hick who runs his mouth way too much.

  3. EastFallowfield says:

Oh good, another thread to trash the franchise, fans and city of Philadelphia over and over, while simultaneously saying that they don’t matter and they’re not in our heads.

And, oh yeah, they didn’t win the division last year, the Mets lost it! And April and May were more important than September.

And Rollins shouldn’t have been MVP.

And Phils were swept! Ha ha.

(There, I just saved everyone a lot of typing.)

At least this link doesn’t seem to require masses of hate emails from Mets fans, I think.

Phils used to have a good rivalry (back when they were both good and following) with the Pirates until MLB broke that up.

    • QnsNative718 says:

Huh? What gave you the impression that this thread was started to trash Philly???

    • gomets6091 says:

oh good, another thread for Philly trolls to take over our message board.

The Mets were mediocre after April.

Winning the division is more important than winning in the postseason.

Jimmy Rollins was the best player in the National League because he had a historic 20-20-20-20 season, making him the first player to ever do that since Curtis Granderson did that a month earlier…

Mets aren’t even the most popular team in their own city, so why would Philly fans care about them?

…there, I just saved you a lot of typing. Now go play in traffic

    • Gland says:

Based on the first few comments your post is valid how?

    • Volume11 says:

Rollins shouldn’t have been MVP. The only people who think so are Phillie fans…the rest of the nation thought he was a solid and had a creer year, but wasn’t as good or Holliday or Fielder. The icing on the cake was most voters saying Holliday would have been a shoe-in if he didn’t hit in a hitter’s park…because CBP is o pitcher friendly.

Explain what you’re team did in the post-season last year? Oh, right. They got swept. Which is why you casually ignore the most important statistic while trolling off wins and losses from 60 years ago.

      • BillyGoat says:

umm..pretty sure the voters believed he was MVP, also which is why he was, you know, named MVP….

here’s the thing about trolling….a few of us come on here to talk about facts and defend ourselves against some unwarranted criticism as fans and Philadelphians, in general…with the exception of one or two Met trollers on Beerleaguer, every one that comes on a) sounds like a third grader b) brings absolutely no insightful commentary to the table or c) is probably wearing jorts..

        sorry, i couldnt resist

        • LeiterMilnerFasterStronger says:

A good number of those same voters gave David Wright and Aaron Rowand (not to mention a certain Yankee with absurdly low range for a SS) undeserved Gold Gloves.

I’m not sure how much I trust the collective opinion of a voting body that welcomes Woody Paige and ESPN Page 2 hack Jim Caple and actively excludes Keith Law and Rob Neyer.

You can say that Rollins performed better than Reyes last year… that I’ll grant you. He also can’t hold David Wright’s jock in terms of OBP (as a “leadoff” hitter), power, and a number of other respects. He produced more outs than any other hitter in baseball, and would probably kill to trade his next five years for Wright’s or Reyes’.

        • LeiterMilnerFasterStronger says:

Oh, and the old Vet? Jorts capital of the ’90s Northeast, my Phriend.

    • zen says:

isn’t there a phillies blog that’s good enough for you to make your points there? apparently eastfallowfield thinks metsblog and it’s posters are superior.

      • cyclone says:

        Metsbloggers are in EastFallowfield’s head…

        • Volume11 says:

Yeah, because of him I’ve stepped up my metsblog game…NY owes all of its great bullet points to Phillies fans.

        • m00kie says:

          lmao

        • EastFallowfield says:

This blog sends trolls out to other team’s sites fairly regularly. Talk to your Cerrone and complain that when he does so that it works the other way too. Would never have visited here without the troll who called himself “Metsblog” over on the Phillies sites.

Go read the ridiculous tripe posted on Beerleaguer when you guys clinched the division last April, May and September. Pretty funny stuff in retrospect.

    • gameball says:

Phillies were in my head, but I have served eviction papers. They have until April 30 to vacate.

After that, I expect to be scraping them off my shoes.

    • Mr. Bananagrabber says:

I don’t understand what your deal is. If you don’t want to see the Phillies made fun of, then go and play with your fellow fans. Don’t come to a site named MetsBlog and then wonder why it is that your precious Phillies are being laughed about.

      Makes sense to me.

  4. mr_met says:

    can’t wait for opening day!

(and finally it looks like the stands are now occupied with lot more fans… goodjob, matt)

  5. The Phils have thee worst fan base in the world..they are far more ignorant , at least ud Mets fans can bash people with wit and humor , and not just beer, or F-bombs (by the way thats what Im naming Fmarts homers in a few years- Fbombs) Either way this is truly going to be our year if any to make the run at the ring…LETS GO METS!!!

  6. Lets go Mets says:

Its one thing being rivals, but don’t throw batteries on the opposing teams’ players. They’re known to do that. I’ll give the Phillies offense, but when it comes to pitching, “WATCH YOURSEVES”. We all know that in the long run its the good pitching teams that are succesful. I have high hopes for the metropolitans (as the SHMOOZER would call it) will DOMINATE. I know Padro will be good and having Sontanah, Padro and Maine for the first three of the rotation, oh boy….thats close to FIFTY wins between them. 19 for Santanah, 16 for Padro and 15 for Maine (he is soooo UNDERrated-probably a future CY Young). Lets hope Pelfrey brakes out and we could move EL Douque to the pen-that will bolster things up there. Oh… one more thing, Glavine…who needs you.

    • therealsince86 says:

How do you go on and on about the Mets pitching and not even mention Perez? Perez may have been our best pitcher last year and now he is our #4.

      • Lets go Mets says:

Yes, he’s good but he’s not consistant. Maine is much more reliable. But yes, he had last year a 15 win season I believe, this year is his contract year so chances for 65 wins between 1,2,3 and 4 starters are very likely. I don’t have confidance in Carlos Delgado though, he was too overmatched on fastballs, thats a sign of old age.

    • Roach2 says:

can we call you the “Butcher of Metsblog”

you brutalized nearly every pitcher’s name, in some cases SEVERAL times…that was funny

  7. Lets go Mets says:

Works with me, I’m new in the blog so whatever you name me now will stick

    • gomets6091 says:

how does someone new manage to get Lets go Mets as their name? I guess all the rest of us just assumed it was taken already haha.

      • Lets go Mets says:

I was also very surprised. Can you tink of even one decent pitcher on the Phillies, who are you gonna tell me… TOM GORDEN, HA HA HA, comapre him with EX-Phillie, Wagner, or rather don’t, they’re not on the same level.

        • Lets go Mets says:

notice, they added an orange on the mets blOg heading, thats a good sign. Maybe a greapfruit would’ve been more exciting.

        • Lets go Mets says:

What are the chances of us getting tickets to the last game a Shea?

  8. Santanaman says:

Talk about Philly fans, if you can imagine I married one(missed it on the application). She was not happy when we got Santana, I didn’t get any for a week! She’s passionate about the bums as well.

Can’t wait for the start of the year. It would appear that I’m looking forward more than she is. Good thing they were swept in the playoffs or I would still be hearing about it.

I truely look forward to handing the Phills their a**. You just can’t imagine.

    • Lets go Mets says:

Thankfully, I married a fellow Met (she wasn’t into baseball when we got married but now she’s as excited as I’m-maybe not but close). I don’t blame her for not “being Happy”, the suicide rate in Phillie rose dramatically after the mets got him. But don’t worry about your wife, today’s Valentines day, there’s hope.

      • DjDeF says:

That is the first question on the application. Yankee Fan? Y or N

If Y do not complete application

        Phillie Fan? Y or N

If Y do not complete application

You know your woman loves you when you are getting the Santana Jersey for your anniversary and she is happy to give it to you.

  9. Santanaman says:

Hey Butcher, I like your posts, it’s like being on a rollercoster.

By the time I process one of your posts you’re on to another.

Glad to see that you are excited!!

  10. PhilaMet says:

The reason why the Phillies and Mets hadn’t really had a rivalry is that they simply haven’t been good during the same years for the most part. Pure and simple. The last couple of years were an exception, (even in ‘06, they were still firmly in our rear-view). If they continue to be competitive over the next few years, that can make things only more fun.

  11. dykstraw says:

Philly fans a bad rep but I’ve been to CBP several times in full garb and the Phils fans have generally been over the top friendly.

I think the good fans are overly sensitive about their bad rep and go out of their way to embarass or even remove the troublemakers.

    • Slob says:

Maybe you were on drugs or something. I don’t know a single person who has been to either Veterans or CBP that wasn’t either verbally or physically abused. I’ve been accosted in both New Jersey and NYC by Philly fans for simply wearing a Mets hat, and this was when the Phillies were awful. There isn’t a worse baseball fan than a Philly fan, and the only reason they aren’t as notorious as Boston or Yankee fans is because their entire sports world is so woeful and pathetic that nobody else in the country even cares about them. When the Phillies are in town this year those Rollins and Utley jerseys are going to make nice BBQ sauce targets. Show no quarter to Philly fans. Mercifully stomp the life out of them.

      • Fregosi says:

Soooo, you want all Mets fans to act like jerks to prove that Phily fans are the worst fans in baseball? Huh?

        • LeiterMilnerFasterStronger says:

I will say this much… calling most of our trolls at Beer Leaguer “third graders” kind of demeans third graders.

By contrast, most of the BeerLeaguers who make their way over here seem pretty damn civil (if a little Philly-brand defensive) and offer reasonably intelligent commentary while avoiding ad hominem attacks. Play nice, and come with the witty rejoinders, fellow Metsies… “go away to people who agree with you” is the last refuge of a dumb scoundrel.

That said, Ollie, Maine and whoever takes our 5-hole are going to sodomize the back end of your rotation all year along. I’m looking forward to it. Cheers!

  12. Lets go Mets says:

No wonder why there a recession, nobody is working, everyone is talking about the most dominant team in the NL.

  13. Santanaman says:

Hey QnsNative, what do you think about this new guy? He seems like he could burst.

  14. Lets go Mets says:

Come on everybody, no matter where you are now, sream out now…LETS GO METS.

  15. Lets go Mets says:

Hey, I just heard someone yelling, was that you?

  16. Jim says:

I do have to give the Phillie fans credit. Even though they have a terrible Starting rotation and the only way they won last year was for the Mets to have a historical collapse and their best player had to have a carreer year that will never happen again, but they still talk smack. Get a clue Philly fans! Lightning won’t strike twice!

    • Lets go Mets says:

      I agree, they got lucky.

    • Fregosi says:

I think you might be mis-remembering last year a little. Howard, Utley, Victorino, and Hamels were all on the DL for about a month and Myers had to go to the bullpen because Gordon was hurt and ineffective. Rollins was the only guy that was healthy all year. And the Mets had their arses handed to them by Philly in August and September.

  17. Zoe says:

Hate to say it, but that’s a pretty classy quote and in good spirits.

  18. QnsNative718 says:

You guys notice how Met fans arent even mentioning the Braves anymore? Wow how times have changes…

    • Lets go Mets says:

OH BOY, this year they got a superstar in TOM GLAVINE, the old geaser will undoubtfully have a 20 win season, don’t you guys agree?

  19. Santanaman says:

Butch, is it possible you are snorting cocaine or are you attempting to set a posting record? Don’t mind, just asking….

    • Lets go Mets says:

funny, I just had a baby boy and my wife calls him “putchkin”, so when you call me “Butch”, it sounds very similar. Cute.

  20. Head First says:

They want a war? We’ll give ‘em a war they won’t believe.

    • Lets go Mets says:

It aint a war, it’ll be a baseball massacre. They be out of contention by the time the second week comes around. Hope you Phillie fans like the smell of dust. While I’m on it, to you Brave fans as well. If you thought we were dominating two years ago, get your box of tissues out cause you’ll need it.

  21. QnsNative718 says:

lol… The closest we can come to a war is rounding up your friends and making the 2hr troop down to Philly come April 18th… Make people from a plane think theyre looking at a Met game with all that blue, orange and black in the stands…

  22. Lets go Mets says:

    Lets break down every position:
Pitching:1)Santanah-19 or 20 game winner 2)Padro-16 game winner 3)Maine-had last year 15 so I would assume he’ll be just as good if not better. 4)Perez-needs to prove he can be more consistant. 5)El Doque-put it this way, a very good fifth starter. The bullpen depends on Duaner. If Pelfrey can step up, El doque can go to the pen and that will straighten things up there. Another good thing about this year is that hopefully we’ll need to use the pen less than last year (with Glavine). Santanah usually pitches dead into games. Wagner will have his 4 or 5 blown saves but over the long term, reliable. First base: NOT GOOD, a waste of valuable space, trade him while he still has value. Second base: Gold gloce defence and very pesky offense, not a supper star but perfect for batting after Reyes. Third base: yup, you quess wright-the catain. SS: I know a lot of people are on him for what happened last year but he will be a one of a kind player on day-you can see gimpses of his talent from time to time. When he’s hot, there’s nobody as good as he is (not even Beltran). Catcher: I don’t know his offensive ability that well but from what I hear he’s a very good defensive player and in my opinion, for a catcher, that’s even more important that to hit, without him, the pitcher just isn’t the same. Right field: sketchy Center: Dominating when healthy. Left field: also, an amazing hitter but won’t play in more that 100 games.

  23. Santanaman says:

Don’t give up on Delgado yet. He just needs to pay a little bit more attention to his little book.

    I predict, 30 & 120

    • Lets go Mets says:

the only thing good about that book is that he can use it for a goodnight story, that’s all. If I would see he was hitting and getting out, thats one thing but he swung on and missed most of the time. Lets face it, he had a good carrier but he’s getting old.

      • Lets go Mets says:

People said about Piazza the same thing, “this season will be better”, it didn’t happen, why, because his hands weren’t as fast as they were when he was younger so he couldn’t catch up to fastballs. The only difference is that despite Piazza not hitting, I still wanted him on the team for what he has done in the past. I have a feeling that he still might come back to the mets as a off the bench pop.

  24. Santanaman says:

Butch, you just set the record. Twenty posts in one thread. You-da-man. Funny, at times it seems you reply to your own post.

    Glad you a Met Fan!

  25. Lets go Mets says:

Listen, of couse I’m a mets fan, I want to root for the team that will win the world series this year.

    • Fregosi says:

Does that mean that you would not root for them if you thought they were not going to win the world series? That’s not a fan, that’s a front runner. I’ll bet you are a Cowboys fan when they are winning too.

  26. Lets go Mets says:

Do you guys think there will still be a big trade before the season starts?
