Burkhardt: Quiet Day, Pedro on his Own
By Matthew Cerrone - Feb 17, 2008 1:21 pm

According to a phone call from SNY’s Kevin Burkhardt, it’s fairly quiet in Port St. Lucie today – with no new arrivals to camp.

Pedro Martinez did not work out with his group today, instead opting to throw 20 pitches from a mound in the bullpen.

During a talk with reporters, Willie Randolph said Martinez looked great and threw the ball well.

…otherwise, that’s it…lazy day, i guess

Tonight on , during Geico’s SportsNite, Burkhardt will do a live, one-on-one interview with Ryan Church, plus talk with prospects Eddie Kunz and Brant Rustich.

    finally a new post
damn this site is like crack

    • Danny1986 says:

Actually, I just cancelled my mlb.tv subscription and my Direct TV MLB package. I cannot honestly fathom why any Mets fan would even bother watching a single game this year. It’s pointless.

I mean…Didn’ t you all read what the statheads at BaseballProspectus published this week? Mets are taking the division hands down this season. In fact, they just “may” be the best team in baseball.

We all can rest easy until October. Thank you, BaseballProspectus for giving us the PECOTA.

      • rustystaubsillegitmateson says:

lol danny thank goodness for good old bill pecota i knew he still bled the blue and orange.
a little off topic but i was watching rooklie of the year on cable and they had the mets in the racing stripe uni’s – it made me all sentimental

        • Danny1986 says:

tell me about it. Prior to landing this gig, his only claim to fame was acting as a cog in the infamous Saberhagen trade, along with sporting a career .870 OPS (i regret to admit that I am not sure what his career win-shares are). Now he’s the most famous handicappers in baseball.

Congrats, Bill Pecota. You’ve come a long way.

        • LetsGetMetsmerized says:

I like to watch my team win even if it is pre-determined.

        • rustystaubsillegitmateson says:

pete rose wants to kiss u metsmerized so does vince mcmahon (shudder)

      • kendychavez says:

yeah, totally! it’s so stupid to try to predict performance! what possible practical use could that have for every single baseball team ever?? somebody needs to tell that nerd pecota that the games are played on the FIELD, not in a computer! cause I don’t think they get it! it’s only us, the guys that watch all the games, that REALLY know what’s going on!
and it’s not even interesting or fun to analyze the team and think about how the season will go, i mean it’s not like it’s all we’ve been doing since october. i like my speculation wild and senseless in the comments section of a blog, not from an incredibly elaborate and well-thought out program that actually produces some accurate results.

        you are a moron.

        • Danny1986 says:

Sorry, I am not a subsciber to the incredibly elaborate baseballprospectus. I would assume you are, as this has obviously struck a nerve.

          So please answer me this:

what was the Mets PECOTA last year?

        • rustystaubsillegitmateson says:

kendy u callin me a moron?

        • rustystaubsillegitmateson says:

jeez i was kidding when i said bill pecota ! i didn’t know that he was running that site i figured it was a anagram for something and i believe pecota predicted the mets with 88 wins for 07

        • kendychavez says:

i’m not actually, cause i’m a broke college kid. but yesterday somebody posted they predicted- get this- 88 wins.

if you’re trying to make some point about how they’re frequently wrong, i’m sure they are. who isn’t wrong about 90% of the stuff that happened in baseball? pecota is just the most well-educated guess available today and it’s interesting for a lot of people.

my problem is the nerve of guys like you that think you actually know so much about baseball that you can’t be bothered with or learn anything from the incredible amount of research and work these guys do

        • kendychavez says:

no, not talking to you rusty

        • rustystaubsillegitmateson says:

oh ok man i might put some stupid comments up sometimes but i just kid – im a old school guy that doesnt read the new stats like the whip or risp i’m the guy that alwasy got excited when we got players like tim corcoran and tom pechorek because they were mets it kinda pollyanna of me but i embrace ne1 that put on a mets uni with the exception of mota and trachel

        • Danny1986 says:

Ah…the college days. The days when I actually believed my opinion and overly emotional and accusatory rants really meant something.

Listen, junior. All we are doing is having some adult fun. If you can’t lighten up, than at least refrain from getting personal. It’s immature and it shows your age.

Now I’m sure this analysis has some use to any baseball fan. I even accept it as a piece of the overall puzzle (hell, I even enjoyed most of Moneyball). But one baseball season is a gigantic and complicated puzzle with infinite amount of variables. You cannot argue that one variable is far more important than the others. Unpredicatabliliy is what makes the game great.

So I don’t exclude this analysis, I just refuse to accept sabermetircs as the true cannon to understanding the game, which so many statheads profess and would passionately take to the grave.

I’m actually on the road next week and will pick up a copy to the BP. I’m sure I can easily swipe one from the night-stand drawer of any Marriott. I’ll get you a copy.

        • LetsGetMetsmerized says:

Did one person write your first paragraph and another the second? Talk about ironic.

        • LetsGetMetsmerized says:

And also, I don’t think anyone really sees these things as “the true cannon to understanding the game” — even the statheads all take it with a grain of salt (as you say you do too)… I know a lot of people that like baseballprospectus but do not take it to the grave — passionately or not, they just like the aalysis. If you know these people you speak of personally, and they do this, I believe they are not the norm, but more likely I think you don’t know anyone that takes it to the grave and you just wanted to criticize something you don’t understand.

        • Danny1986 says:

Stick around this blog all season….I assure you will run across plenty of them.

And thanks for the psychoanalysis. Very useful.

        • kendychavez says:

oops, let my age slip. i can’t possibly know anything and opened myself up to all kinds of attacks.
stick to your RBIs and batting averages, old man. if that’s how you want to watch baseball, that’s fine. but you started this by being absolutely condescending toward a field you don’t know enough about. A field made up exclusively of guys that know way, way more about baseball than you.

I can say for sure you don’t know enough about it because nobody really learns and understands the newer stats and rejects them. It’s not even an opinion issue- EqA, OPS+, ERA+, WHIP.. they are so much better for evaluating talent and performance that I find it insulting when the only stats I’m given for a player are BA, RBIs, HR and worst of all, W-L for a pitcher.

I’m not even geeky about stats, man. I just want an understanding of the game beyond what I see on tv and read in the paper. and as you get further into the newer stats you realize what a terrible job mainstream sources do of making sense of baseball.

Of course unpredictability makes the game fun. On a pitch-by-pitch basis nobody can predict baseball with any kind of accuracy and nobody is trying to. And for most of us, imagining how things will go is fun. Making predictions, projections- it’s all part of the fun. It ain’t nobody’s gospel.

        • rustystaubsillegitmateson says:

just wondering guys i joined in november what can i expect during the season on this site?

        • Danny1986 says:

Alright, truce on getting personal. Trust me, I’d much rather be a college kid right now. And If I were, I certainly wouldn’t be on a blog arguing with a fellow Met fan when there is plenty of co-ed tail to chase. Admit it….You do have priority issues (that is a joke).

I understand your point. I also do not appreciate the limited view of mainstream baseball analysis (or any sports analysis, really) thrown at us in the MTV-style sensory overload ESPN BS manner sponsored by Lexus in partnership with Miller Lite. It’s old. And there is far more out there to use as evaluation tools. Matter of fact, these sports radio hacks here in Chicago were justifying Jason Marquis yesterday as one of the best 4th starters in the NL. Why?…b/c he has averaged as many wins as Barry Zito these past few years. I lost my mind. In a nutshell, that’s the quality of analysis these pathetic Cubs fans get here. And it’s no different from what you generally see nationwide.

So I’m in agreement with using these complex tools at evaluating past performance. They are far better than traditional means. But using them to predict future perfomance is where I scoff. And those who take future projections just as seriously as the analysis of past performance, than I suggest they take their money to Vegas and bet that line.

I am certainly willing to admit that anyone wearing an employee badge over at the BP knows more about baseball statistics than I do. But Baseball Statistics is not baseball. That’s the near equivelant of claiming you’re a great soldier b/c you play ‘Call OF Duty 4′ 12 hours a day. I know a hell of a lot about playing and coaching this game, and I will put that up against anyone at BP who sits at a computer crunching numbers (based on past performance) all day. Knowledge is learned on the field of play, not at a Macintosh. If that wasn’t true, than I suggest MLB get with the program and let Baseball Prospectus manage every game this season.

And there in lies the difference.

        • metsftw says:

LOL, i love posts like this. “i played the game for x number of years, clearly these nerds never did! i mean, look at billy beane! he must’ve been horrible at baseball!”

        • Danny1986 says:

          Yep…that’s exactly what I was saying. good job. And 1+1 = 10.

tell you what…go back and read the ENTIRE post as opposed to one paragraph.

        • metsftw says:

i read the whole thing. you have no idea what the hell you’re talking about. oh well. another baseball fan who doesn’t get it, but thinks he does because he played in high school.

        • Danny1986 says:

care to grace us with all your baseball knowledge?

You have yet to even attempt, which says far more about you than it ever can me.

        • kendychavez says:

No one has ever or will ever say that there aren’t many things about baseball that can’t be quantified. nobody is claiming to know the ins and outs of what goes on in the field. It’s about analysis and evaluation of what we can figure out.

That said, you could play baseball for a million years, know all the intricacies of actually playing and still be an absolutely awful coach. Dusty Baker has been in the game forever and he’s completely incompetent. He’ll probably bench Adam Dunn or encourage him to shorten his swing so he doesn’t strike out so much. And possibly the greatest second basemen ever, Joe Morgan, is famous to a new generation for being a know-nothing buffoon. There’s plenty of examples of it.

People in baseball know HOW to play- how to hit, pitch, field. The complicated and detailed adjustments they make are way beyond us, and it’s another thing I’m very interested in. But that is so drastically different from stats, man. You can’t pick one at the expense of the other. You learn what you can about both.
Stats can’t teach you HOW to do anything on the field, obviously. But we’re not on the field, we’ll never play at that level, we’re just fans. Through statistical analysis you come to understand what is important, how important it is and what it all means. That doesn’t come with just being on the field any more than being at a computer comes with knowing how to play a line drive into the corner.

        • kendychavez says:

By the way, I did play for a long time and I’m looking to get back into it. Any adult league teams in NYC need a LHP?

        • LetsGetMetsmerized says:

“I know a hell of a lot about playing and coaching this game, and I will put that up against anyone at BP who sits at a computer crunching numbers (based on past performance) all day. Knowledge is learned on the field of play, not at a Macintosh. If that wasn’t true, than I suggest MLB get with the program and let Baseball Prospectus manage every game this season.”

That’s really got to be the Joe Morgan quote of the year. 95% of the subscribers to BP probably play fantasy baseball, with is 100% about stats, and 95% of the time won by number crunching geeks like me (and lost by naive jocks who discount statistical analysis to help predict future trends).

I played the game too, and it taught me plenty, but the things statistical analysis teaches can not be learned on the field.

    • ill says:

not hidin’ hoss. I told you where you can find me for some intelligent conversation on baseball, the Phillies, and the NL East. When do you all go back to being J-E-T-S Jets! Jets! Jets! fans?

      • QnsNative718 says:

ill, The majority of Met fans are Giant fans… Ooooooh I get it, you see J-E-T and M-E-T rhyme so you just assumed most of us are Jet fans…I see..

      • KinersKornerman says:

attaboy ill. I knew you couldn’t resist our Metsblog charm. :)

So which pitcher you gonna miss the most in 08: Lieber, Garcia, Lohse, Geary, Alfonseca, or Mesa?

        • ill says:

Not gonna miss Garcia. You guys can have him, he bitched and moaned and didn’t run out groundballs. Hopefully Santana takes to batting better than Garcia did. Lieber was fat. He had a couple good starts here and there, but he wasn’t anything special. Geary had a good year 2 years ago, but like any relief pitcher, you don’t know what you are going to get from him from year to year. He was a gas can.

I am actually going to miss Alfonseca. He stepped up when Myers and Gordon were hurt and pitched with a lot of fire. He could be fun to watch, but terrifying at the same time. Lohse will be missed a little too. He didn’t get to hang around long, but we won a majority of the games he pitched. He kept us in the games and let the offense work its magic. I was hoping to bring him back, but he was just asking too much.

As for Joe Table, he will always have his place in Philadelphia lore.

        • KinersKornerman says:

Always loved Joe Table, especially watching from the other side. Kinda like your Armando Benitez. Lohse might be back. If he doesn’t drop his demands, he’s gonna be slingin’ for the Long Island Ducks.

Geary scared me the most. Just seemed to get us every time. You guys gave up too much for Lidge. Bourne looked like a future star.

        • rustystaubsillegitmateson says:

ill u guys still miss nino espinoza and mitch “wild thing” williams

        • rustystaubsillegitmateson says:

yeah borne made some impossible catches against the mets last season – cost them a couple of games if i remember correctly

        • ill says:

Bourn was a good player, but he wasn’t going to fit into the Phillies plans for this year. We were able to get the closer we needed and gave up very little. We have a player that is extremely similar to Bourn in the minors named Greg Golson, who is actually more athletic and quicker. I would not be surprised to see Bourn succeed, but we had to make a move to get bullpen help. We just didn’t need another slap hitter, we have Vic for that.

        • Danny1986 says:

curious..any chance you guys feel you peaked last year? At least emotionally?

Now I’m not saying I would take the Mets collapse over living with the painful fact that we lost 3 playoff games in a row to Kaz Matsui and co. But it isn’t exactly a no-brainer choice either. With those 2 scenarios in front of me, I would seriously have to think about it for a while.

It honestly seemed as if your squad felt is if they already played their World Series in September, and then pulled a complete 180 once the playoffs began. No one could hit and the fundamentals just disappeared. Didn’t understand it.

So we admitedly have a rebound factor this year. But don’t you guys as well?

        • ill says:

I met Mitch at a baseball tourney in my hometown a few years ago, he was a shell of his former self. Since then, he has gotten much better and I am looking forward to having him in the broadcast booth for the Phils for years to come. You can’t put all the blame on him for the ‘93 series, but the media seems to be happy in doing so.

        • rustystaubsillegitmateson says:

ill please be honest you are not just a little bit scared of lidge in high pressure situation? especially in a very small park such as yours? im sure yankee fans would worry if mo rivera went for a save opportunity there with the winds blowing out

        • ill says:

Danny we were definitely not satisfied with the way we went out last year, but it is hard to ignore the fact that the Rockies were just on a roll. We may have peaked emotionally when we clinched the division, but I personally was happy to see Myers throw his glove in the air and watch that celebration. We weren’t sitting on top of the division the entire year and our playoff push was completely unlikely with ll the injuries we had. I believe we have all the team leaders back (besides Rowand) and they are just as driven to get back this year. In no way are we going to just give up on the season because the Mets got Santana.

        • KinersKornerman says:

Lidge just seems like a roll of the dice. Was there any interest in Valverde. Can’t believe the DBags traded him. Or any interest in Benitez or Wickman? I think both are still out there?

Also, what is up with JC Romero contract? Seems crazy.

        • ill says:

Lidge has 6 saves in 6 chances with a 1.00 ERA at CBP. I am not worried because ESPN says his psyche is toast. I know better than to believe everything the Worldwide Leader tells me.

        • rustystaubsillegitmateson says:

can u imagine “el lardo” benitez in philly? he’d be strung up like mussolinni after he blew 10 saves in a row

        • rustystaubsillegitmateson says:

          fair enough ill
but philly is more of a pressure cooker situation than houston

        • KinersKornerman says:

ill, you got total agreement from us on ESPN being full of crap, especially the much-hated Steve Phillips.

Hey, has Anna Benson made an appearance at CBP yet? You will LOVE her antics.

        • rustystaubsillegitmateson says:

she will be smoking phillies with the philies (if u know what im saying )

        • ill says:

I am actually looking forward to seeing what Benson has. If anything, I don’t think he can be any worse than Eaton last season and will get to warm up pitching for our new minor league team, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. he won’t be ready until June. As for Anna, he already made his comment about how he just laughs about the coverage she gets. No doubt, she has a bangin body, but give me Cole Hamels’s girl any day of the week.

        • KinersKornerman says:

YA know, I shouldn’t remind everybody of this, but the last time we saw Benson, we hit a homer of Pedro and the Orioles won that game in June of 2006. I woudl rather not see him any more, especially if he is this year’s Adam Eaton-us-for-breakfast. So, will Taguchi wear 99 for you as well?

        • ill says:

I don’t think we have retired the number from when Wild Thing wore it. Didn’t that douchebag Turk Wendell wear it? I would rather see it on So than be reminded of Wendell on the mound.

You know, its funny because i was a Mets fan when I was a kid. I was a frontrunner and didn’t know better. I loved watching HoJo and Strawberry play. I have seen the light though and am happy to be a Phan now.

        • KinersKornerman says:

oops..meant that HE (Benson) hit the homer. Ruined my entire night.

        • KinersKornerman says:

That’s a surprise. The frontrunners tend to be Yankee fans. Even tho, you left us, you’re appreciated for representing your team through good and bad times. We had visits from Twins fans during the Santana trade days and had much mutual respect.

Turk was a fan fave here, mostly b/c there wasn’t much to root for when he played here. Your comments speaks to the truism tha relievers are so unpredictable. Omar has gotten much love recently for bring in loads of potential arms for BP and SP backups. I wonder why more teams haven’t done that.

  13. rustystaubsillegitmateson says:

hey matt do u know whats going on with freddy garcia or bartolo “el gordo” colon?? i’d like to sign him ala jon leiber for some insurance u know stick him in the minors hed be jose lima 7.1

    • KinersKornerman says:

rusty, I would rather sign YOU than that Bufett-buddy Bartolo. I’m afraid if he dropped his chalupa, he wouldn’t be able to pick it up.

      • rustystaubsillegitmateson says:

kiner you’d love my ribs lol i don’t think the real rusty remembers the last time he’s seen his toes but i love him just the same
VIVA LA GRANDE L’ORANGE!!! (and howz about retirin his number too while we are at it)

        • KinersKornerman says:

I hated it when they let Ben Johnson wear the mighty #4.

or are you talking about #10, the second time around??

        • rustystaubsillegitmateson says:

          id say either or
i mean he is big enough for 2 jerseys lol but in all seriousness im 36 i remember rusty more from his second tour of duty ( was there for thanks rusty day) but in 73 my dad took me when i was a year and a half old to the world series and had feild level seats (it was easier to get back then) rusty was signing autographs and my dad yelled out “HEY RUSTY HERES YOUR ILLEGITMATE SON!! ” rusty looked at me and laughhed cuz i have red hair and signed a ball for me so i say retire both numbers – if not for his career then for his charitable endevors
btw this is a true story

          Great story.
Hated when they traded him for fat Lolich and one of the Baldwin brothers. Not the worst trade we ever made, but definitely top 10.

        • rustystaubsillegitmateson says:

          i agree
wasn’t rusty later replaced by fat man jerry morales and jose beisball has been berry berry good to me cardinal? damn i loved the 79 team lol

        • KinersKornerman says:

After Rusty, we had Kingman for .76. When Rusty came back in 1981, he was mostly a bench guy and fan attraction, I’m sorry to say.

Ellis Valantine was the man in RF until Straw came up in ‘83. Don’t remember much of Rusty in the OF at that point.

Off Topic from Post: I have not seen anyone comment on this yet, or at least not recently. I just finished watching a video of Brian Schneider on NewYorkMets.com, and what a great position he is now. Besides coming from the Nationals to a legitimate WS contender, he will have the chance to catch some of the greatest pitchers this game has EVER offered. From a catcher’s point of view, how much better can that get? Having an opportunity to win a WS in the ‘brightest’ city in the world, catching deadly pitches from a world class Santana and Pedro, the list is endless.

I’m very excited for him. This is a catcher’s dream, and I Hope he has a great year.

    • rustystaubsillegitmateson says:

ill be happy if he hits like sterns and fields like hodges

    • Danny1986 says:

Hopefully he calls a good game. From what I’ve heard, he is superior to LoDuca behind the plate. I’ve never had a major problem with how LoDuca called a game, so I guess this a plus.

But a battery is all about chemistry. I honestly don’t see Schneider butting heads with anyone on the staff and actually thriving in this opportunity. LoDuca displayed a combative demeanor a bit more. I will not be surprised to hear more negative remarks about LoDuca from the Mets clubhouse over 2008. Especially if Scheider turns out to be comparatively better. That will stir up comparison questions from the media

      • rustystaubsillegitmateson says:

        danny
i thought loduca was a good defender for us maybe its because he was a met but now – no respect for him whatsoever – i mean it turns out he was a pusher. it kills me to bash him now but facts are facts and since ive booed mota bonds clemens etc i gotta do the same to paulie

      • KinersKornerman says:

“a battery is all about chemistry”

I love the science lessons on Metsblog, lol. You guys are awful smart.

an1y see roy oswalts comment bout johan? d-bag

    • NYCESQ says:

No, can you post a link? Thanks in advance.

        • NYCESQ says:

Ah, thanks for the link Jawklin, I don’t know how I feel about this.

An Ace should be known for his confidence, as well as his ability to pitch. I can’t fault him for thinking or conceding that the race is over before the regular season even begins.

However, there is a tremendous difference in class, from player to player. I would bet my yearly salary that Johan would never say, “What is he smoking?”, if roles were reversed.

As far as running the basepaths, I do not think that his argument holds any kind of weight. If he was speaking about David Wells or even Blanton, then maybe. Those hamstrings would be put through some sort of test.

Why won’t we switch gears, how does everyone feel about Demsetz prediction of the Cubs going to the WS?

        • NYCESQ says:

          * An Ace should be known for his confidence, as well as his ability to pitch. I can’t fault him for NOT thinking or conceding that the race is over before the regular season even begins.

nicely put nyc sorry if my comment below sounds uncouth
but id be surprised if the stros did better than 3rd place

        • NYCESQ says:

No need to apologize. Every time the words jealous and douche are placed next to one another, it always gets a laugh.

I have never been this excited for spring training.

        • rustystaubsillegitmateson says:

yeah i guess it ranks up there with fart jokes lol
im chomping at the bit to see s/t games on sny

        • metsftw says:

LOL at the last comment. “roy should win the cy young but won’t because of ‘north easter’ bias”

          lololol

        • KinersKornerman says:

Northeast bias? He should look up the last 10 NL Cy Youngs. I’ll do it for ya:
          2007 Jake Peavy SDP
          2006 Brandon Webb ARI
          2005 Chris Carpenter STL
          2004 Roger Clemens HOU
          2003 Eric Gagne LAD
          2002 Randy Johnson ARI
          2001 Randy Johnson ARI
          2000 Randy Johnson ARI
          1999 Randy Johnson ARI
          1998 Tom Glavine ATL
          1997 Pedro Martinez MON

Interestingly, Pedro was the last NL Cy Young winner from the Northeast, sort of.

Just shut award goes to: (envelope please) Roy Ass-walt

  19. rustystaubsillegitmateson says:

yeah hes a jealous douche. he’s cranky cuz the only upgrade (lol)the astros made was aquiring that over the hill roid user tejada

  20. gottabeliev4evr says:

Dumpster and the Scrubs…I’m still laughin’ about that one, but how can you take anything from the hapless Windy City Wonders.

Hey, they’ve got Fukudome! Yeah, Fukudome, and don’t forget the addition of Lieber.

  21. wolverine193 says:

I’d just like to say, because you can’t post on the Lo Duca thread anymore, that the guy made a mistake, he apologized “for” and not “if” which is a rarity these days (see Pettite) and I hope the best for him. He’s not perfect, none of us are, but he did what he had to do to make a living, and I’m not going to sit on my high horse and begrudge him that. Good luck Paulie

  22. foul bunt strikeout says:

anybody hear any news on the arbitration hearings with Ollie?

oh yea and Oswalt is a huge tool!

When the Astros are 25 out by late july, maybe he can have fun sliding down that dumb flagpole up the hill in center field…we know he won’t be playing in any meaningful games.

  23. KinersKornerman says:

Wolverine, we wish him luck, but let’s be honest about this.
    1. injecting a foreign substance into your butt isn’t a mistake, it’s an intentional act as is acquiring the substance under false pretences.
    2. The apology wasn’t in person and it never actually mentioned was he allegedly did.
    3. My father did what he had to do to make a living when he got his tired body out of bed every morning rain, shine or snow, and went off to his construction job. Paul LoDuca is a multi-millionaire who plays a game for a living.

Yeah, we wish him well, because WE are good people. Turns out that HE is a scoundrel.
