pmBlogs: Bunt Drills, Rookies and Reyes
By Matthew Cerrone - Feb 17, 2008 5:11 pm

At his blog for Newsday, David Lennon recaps a slow day from Mets camp, including Billy Wagner’s spiral and David Wright’s defense, as well as Group 1’s bunting drills, of which Lennon writes…

“On the field, it was amusing to see that even $137.5-million pitchers have to repeat drills until they get them right. When Johan Santana goofed on looking back a runner at second, Guy Conti, fungo in hand, barked, ‘Do it again!’ At first, it seemed like Santana didn’t hear him. Either that, or he couldn’t believe Conti actually was telling him to get back on the mound. Regardless, Santana did it flawlessly the second time around.”

Fore more, read Lisa Kennelly in the Star-Ledger, who writes about clubhouse life for two young prospects; and the New York Post, where Bart Hubbach explains that Willie Randolph intends to get Jose Reyes more days off during this season.

LOL! this guy is hilarious. I guess having the third highest payroll gets you a nickname of Freddie Coupons. And wow, 10 years for a pitcher??? sheesh…are you insane. lol, please boycott this team.

i know this guy is trolling and just simply wants attention but why not make it that everyone gets 1 response to laugh at him. This is mine, and i’ll ignore him from now on. This is comedy, however.

On another note, I’m so hyped for the season to start that I dusted off my PS2 and put on MLB 2004. I traded Pedro and Johan to the Mets and pitted them up against the Bravos.

Johan got shelled as well as Pedro. Sigh. Of course, I haven’t played the game in years so that had a lot to do with it but in the end it didn’t feel good. We got beat by Russ “bleeping” Ortiz.

Back to Spring Training. Anyone else read about our young bullpen arm prospect Eddie Kunz on Mets.com? Seems Billy Wagner has taken it upon himself to school Kunz this spring. Told him he wants him to follow him around at all times and learn. Wagner even went as far as to say that you never know this kid can be closing games for us by next year. Wow. Supposedly the Mets drafted him with 42nd pick in first year player draft last season out of Witchita State with the thought that he can be contributing out of the pen very quickly. Looks like he may be the real deal which is exciting and most likely neccessary considering we may lose Heilman soon to free agency. This kid may have to replace him from the right side out of the pen. Great fastball that impressed at recent bullpen session. Big kid with loads of potential. Good stuff and good to know. You guys should read the article.

Kunz is out of Oregon State; not Wichita. Take it from a Mets fan now living in Portland, OR! :-)

Big dude, nice fastball….needs to work on secondary pitch(es).

How ’bout a match up of Kunz and Fukudome?

Ok, so I’m childish. God, I’ve never wanted April to get here this quickly!

I need baseball to start soon… I’ve actually begun watching CRICKET! this is bad… I usually try to avoid exhibition games and save it all for opening day, but this year I’m gonna have to watch some Split Squad action. Especially since the Cricket dries up at the end of the month

Formula One also starts soon (unlike NASCAR, F1 is not just a bunch of guys turning one way for three hours…F1 is boring in entirely different ways–but boy, sure would like to drive one of those cars…!)
Is Cricket fun?

i used to make fun of it, but I’m actually starting to like it a bit. Once you learn the rules (which can take a while)it can get interesting…. still doesn’t compare to new york Mets baseball in anyway shape or form… this goes without saying.

I certainly understand that Nascar is boring to many, but I prefer fenders on the cars I drive as well as on those I watch others drive on tv, plus I won the first week of my fantasy league today thanks to a great last lap pass by Ryan Newman. Cricket I’m not ready for yet, but anything that involves bats and sticky wickets has got potential. :-)

I love Formula 1. Don’t find it boring in the slightest, espcially the in-car footage…it’s amazing. Crank the stereo up…yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I for one am so excited about this season and the Mets ability to dominate the leauge. The magic 8 ball predicts 102 victories which is a legitimate prediction.

Phillies Respond To Beltran’s Comments

Shane Victoriano:
“Noooooo,” Victorino laughed. “No comments out of this guy.” .. “It’s gonna be fun,” “Put it that way. It’s going to be an interesting season. New York Mets 1, Philadelphia Phillies 1. Let’s get it on.”

Brett Myers (looking out of shape):
“If that’s his way of learning from the MVP how to fire up his team, that’s fine,” Myers quipped, eyes twinkling. “I hope it works for him — just not against us.”

Sequels are terrible,” “You can’t predict it twice. That’s why Jimmy went with his sequel, of 100 wins. The plot has changed for us. I guess their favorite movie was us last year, or something. I don’t know.

“But if they’re trying to shake us up, they’re not going to, because we’re too strong-minded and strong-willed to do what we want to do.”

Tom Gordon?:
“You know what? We’re the team to beat,”.. “That’s what I think. I think we’re good. This is a tough team. So don’t say I’m coming back with talk because that’s not what I’m doing. All I’m saying is, I believe that we’re a good team that can win a championship.”

BTW, I heard breaking news on MLB radio today:

“Because the Mets are such an overwhelming favorite in the NL, MLB is cancelling the 2008 season and letting the Mets go the World Series without ever having to play a game.”

“This decision was prompted by hundreds of thousands of emails and phone calls to the MLB offices in NY by Met fans demanding that the Mets be declared default winners of the NL because they had managed to pull off a trade for Johan ‘Saint’ana.”

“”Since Mets fans are always right”, said baseball commissioner Bud -I turned a blind eye to Kirk Radomski in the Mets’ clubhouse- Selig, “we might as well just do what they want, because in the face of that, playing the games really doesn’t matter. If Mets fans say the Mets are going to win then it must be true, so there’s really no need to tire out the Mets players with the grind of a 162 game season.”

“Mets fans had also demanded that the Mets be declared winner of the 2008 World Series, and there was much sentiment for it among Mets fans working in MLB offices in New York, but Commissioner Selig refused to cave in to that demand, as there are equal numbers of Yankee fans who work at MLB, who thought the Mets should at least have to play World Series games”.

“Developing……”

I’m as excited as anyone here about Johan Santana…but I’m already getting a little over him being spoken about as if he’s the first star player we’ve ever had.

We’ve had plenty of start that we’ve gona crazy about. Johan is just the latest. Remember how crazy we went when Hernandez and Carter or Piazza joined the team?

We also were ecstatic about Bobby Bo, much to our eventual chagrin.

This comes from a guy that got excited over the Oliver Perez trade, so you know I was very pumped to see Johan. I am tired of the talk though, I would much rather be watching games. I do wish we had the WBC to watch because I get tired of spring training, but I do get excited about spring training just to see the high lights on sports center rather than just basketball……I dont care if the Hawks beat the Heat, just show me some baseball. All I think about is baseball with my college season underway, so I cannot wait until the days I can come home from practice and sprawl out on the couch and watch a game………I am glad to see Beltran with a big comment like that. I hope he backs it up……..
