News: New Ticket Sales Record
By Regis Courtemanche - Feb 19, 2008 1:00 pm

According to a press release on Mets.com, advance ticket sales for the Mets’ final season at Shea Stadium have already surpassed 2 million.

Ticket sales are pacing 10% ahead of last year’s record-setting year-to-date sales.

…i’m wondering what the spike will be like on game-day ticket sales when Johan Santana pitches…

    Citi Field too small….

    • cbusmetsfan says:

You would not be saying that is this were the early to mid 90s when they did not draw over 2 million for 6 straight years. It’s because they are good now. When they stink some time in the future and initial stadium draw has worn off, 18,000 on a Tuesday night won’t seem as barren as it does in Shea. Also, last year was the first year ever that the Mets drew more than they could hold if they sell out every game in a season at CitiField. This does not include standing room and I don’t know if luxury boxes are included in the general seating capacity. Heck, they’ve only drawn 3 million 4 years in their history. So, it may seem small but it’s not being built for the next 5 years.

      • tfc3rid says:

It will look like Camden Yards does now… I understand that… But this is also New York, where the current economic status of the game and the revenue that the team generates, should mean competitiveness every year…

        • Xavier22 says:

Actually, Camden Yards seats more – 48,876 according to the Orioles website.

That’s right, the Baltimore Orioles have a bigger ballpark than the New York Mets.

    • coreynyc says:

CitiField is not too small. Shea had a significant number of empty seats last season during 60-75% of the games.

      45,000 * 81 = 3.6 million

  2. KevinG says:

when do they announce the winners for the opening day, yankee series and last game ticket drawing?

    • Ceetar says:

      Friday.

And regular tickets aren’t even on sale yet. crazy.

      • kowalski69 says:

actually the caveat says winners will be notified BY friday. Last year, I was notified the day after selection (today). Just keep checking your emails

    • Paid Like Mike Gallego says:

The drawing is today and the winners will be announced on Friday February 22.

At this time last year, ticket sales had eclipsed 1.75 million. By the time single game tickets went on sale last season, ticket sales had eclipsed 2.0 million. A large percentage of that increase is likely accounted for by sales of Opening Day, the 3 Yankees games as well as seven packs purchased by those who didn’t win the ticket lottery.

Assuming a similar increase this year, the Mets will have sold approximately 2.3 million tickets by the time single game tickets go on sale. This total equals 28,400 full season equivalents – 2,300,000 divided by 81 games (consisting of full-season ticket holders, partial plan holders, seven pack holders).

  3. stickguy says:

    Way. Too. Small.

  4. mrose says:

    know what would be nice?

A separate message board for people to sell tix to other mets fans…
i’m getting a full season plan this year and obviously won’t make every game..and for the most part i’m not looking to profit on the tickets, just get face back…..

    • kowalski69 says:

mets.com click Tickets on top right. It’s called Mets Ticket Marketplace. It’s exactly what you’ve just described.

      • mrose says:

but with that, don’t other fans need to pay to have access to it and what not?

        • kowalski69 says:

Yeah you’re right. It’s free to full and partial plan holders. If a fan doesnt have one of those, they pay something per year to purchase tickets that we mark up.

        • mrose says:

yea…i mean, its great and i’ll probably list some games there…but i wanna make sure everyone gets a shot….

          I’ll figure it out.

        • reyesnwright says:

I’m in the same boat as you. I just got the full season plan so I will be able to get Citifield seats but I will not have the time or be able to afford to go to every game. I would love a place to be able to list games for sale at face value.
In addition to having to pay for the Mets Ticket Marketplace, I’m pretty sure you can only list “Premium Seats”- Field Box or Inner Loge Box or something like that which I do not have.

        • kowalski69 says:

my experience tells that you can list any ticket there

        • Saltzy23 says:

No reason why you cant put em on stubhub for face. Craigslist is fantastic as well.

        • Crooked Numbers says:

          Try craigslist or ebay.

There’s always stubhub, but they take a commission from both buyer and seller of around 10% (I think).

    • Saltzy23 says:

(Crying and pleading)…..Can the people who still think ANY seats next year will be readily available PLEASE defend that argument again?….please….

I will restate….if you dont have season tickets this year(or maybe a long standing partial account) you WILL NOT see this team play for less that 2x face after this season for a LOOOONG time….Again….(outside of the few individual tickets per game that they HAVE to sell)all of the stadium will be ST’s and a few partials….there no longer are the 10,000 ‘open’ seats to sell for every game(including Yankees, OD, weekend, whatever)..This is the reason why most people never had an issue ever getting into Shea…..the only tickets availble on the secondary market in ‘09 will be the account holders selling online(mostly for profit) and the scalpers who bought the individual tickets. The 10,000 extra seats filled alot of the demand for “modest/day of” sellouts(non OD, Yankees games), so a large percentage of the demand was swallowed up.

My point. Shea could hold account holders, partials and had at least 25,000 extra seats ‘open’ for any game. They were either sold via lottery, or walk up. The market of available tickets were account holders selling seats, plus ALL the seats at face value still available through the team at face value. Starting next year the market will be account holders(who will go or give tickets to people they know for most games), plus a few individual tickets that may or may not find their way onto the secondary market. Throw in the “new stadium” aspect(as in they arent just ripping 10,000 seats out of Shea. Its a brand new stadium that MANY people are gonna want to see), and the bottom line is that even for Tuesday games against the Nats there just arent gonna be any seats floating around….whatever, you’ll all see….

      • gipper913 says:

And sellout on a Tuesday night vs the Nats is bad for the franchise….how?

They will keep a segment of seats aside for individual game sales. Besides, there will ALWAYS be seats available through scalpers, stubhub, Mets Ticket marketplace, Craigslist, ebay, etc etc. Most season ticx holders do this as most cnnot go to every game and want to recoup some of their season tix costs. This is especially true on midweek games against so-so opponents and even more so in the Aptil-early June period when kids are still in school.

Now, whether you want to pony up for the cost of those seats….that is a different animal altogether. But there will be setas available. I guarntee there will be seats on StubHub and elsewhere even for the grand opening game at Citi, just like there will be primo seats at Shea of the home opener with Johan this year.

As for the size of Citifield…I too ould prefer a few more seats (like 48,500 or so total), but beserious, most games at Shea have a whole sea of empty seats in the upper deck and many have swaths of empty seats in the mezz too! It looks horrible on TV. Many of those seats are “sold” but not occupied becase tjose who can afford stubhub or scalpers or tix brokers don’t bother with the nosebleeds.

  5. Mr.Spock says:

And how about the ticket sales when the mets play the phillies now that EVERYONE is making a HUGE deal about Beltran’s comment? …..which, by the way, it is NOT a big deal.

  6. It might be easier to get tickets to Citizen Bank then shea

  7. Bill Buckner says:

Can’t get on Wilpon for raising ticket prices when this is the response.

Granted, he signed the best pitcher in baseball to a long-term deal, but I remember hearing a lot of fans say that they wouldn’t come out to Shea this year regardless of whether or not we acquired an ace because they simply couldn’t afford it. Either a lot of people were lying, or the Mets’ fanbase is a lot bigger now than ever before. All aboard the bandwagon, folks….

    • ibleedblueandorange says:

I think you’re right on both counts. First off, a lot of people saying they weren’t coming out to Shea this year were probably lying, that’s probably true. But you also have to consider that the team is better now, so there’s all sorts of “fans” coming out of the woodwork to cheer for “their” team. It’s the same thing that happened to the Yankees when they started playing better in the mid-90s.

For the record, I am one of those fans that said I wouldn’t be able to get out to Shea as often this year because of the prices. I usually go to 5-10 games a year, Opening Day being one of them, but this year that’s just not a possiblit, barring any free tickets coming my way. I simply can’t afford it. That being said, I already have plans for OD: Instead of going to the game, my buddies and I will be watching at home, grilling up burgers and dogs, saving the $15 for parking, if you can get it, the $7.25 for each beer, and $4.50 for each hot dog. It’s not Shea, but it’s a hell of a lot cheaper.

I’m looking forward to Citi. I mean, the atmosphere will be
great. The place will be filled even on weekday afternoons.

  9. tfc3rid says:

BTW, single game tickets go on sale for the Phillies on February 21…

Mets-Phils tix go fast at CBP… Just a note of information…

    • AnneM says:

I bought tickets today for July 4 Mets v. Phillies at CBP. Since I bought tickets last year I got an email that there was a pre-sale today. Got great seats, field level, third base side. If anyone bought Phillies tickets last year, check your email, you probably got a pre-sale chance too!

  10. DjDeF says:

I don’t know why everyone is going all crazy about citifield. At this point the Mets have sold 2 mill. Do the math. IF they were all Full Season Plans that would mean 24,000 seats per game would be filled which makes 31,000 seats per game at Shea available and 18,000 seats per game at Citi available.

Now take into account the fact that within the 2 mill it isn’t completely full season plans but also 7gm and Partial plans. So it will be less then 24,000 guaranteed per game as of right now.

All of this makes me wonder how soon the Mets will announce that partial plans will be sold at CitiField

    • Saltzy23 says:

Sigh….AGAIN….going with your numbers….24,000 ST’s…..all the partial plans(however many, say 10,000 for each game) leaves 10,000 seats per game WITH NO MORE AVAILABLE SEATS…The open seats at Shea for any game are unaccounted for, even for Yanks games. (Ex. A lot of people buy Yanks games just to sell) Where are these seats coming from next year? There are no more ‘open’ seats. Only the few individual seats and whatever seats are made available by the account holders with the tickets. In less people decide they dont want to profit on their tickets(pretty unlikely) there just wont be a huge amount of tickets on the secondary market. In other words….very VERY few seats will be availble for ANY given game….supply-low, demand high…..yup, Im wrong….plenty of seats should be around for face….

      • Paid Like Mike Gallego says:

Salty, I understand your point but you’re double counting partial plans. According to the Mets release, they have sold slightly over 2,000,000 tickets. That total includes full season plans, partial plans, seven packs and select single game tickets. 2,000,000 divided by 81 home games equals approximately 25,000 full-season equivalents.

A full-season equivalent can be one of two things. First, it can be a full season ticket plan. Second, it could be a combination of plans (Mini Plan, Tuesday-Friday Plan, Saturday Plan, and Sunday Plan) which are held by more than one person.

As a result, the 25,000 figure could be broken down as follows: 20,000 full season ticket plans + 5,000 Mini Plans (M, W, Th) + 5,000 Tuesday/Friday Plans + 5,000 Saturday Plans + 5,000 Sunday Plans. Note, this calculation doesn’t include Seven Packs or single game tickets that have already been placed on sale.

      • DjDeF says:

I am not saying there is going to be a huge number of tickets but look at it this way

        2,000,000 tickets/81 games = 24,691 Ticket Plans TOTAL

I will be generous and say there are 20,000 Full Season Tickets and 5,000 Partial Plans. This leaves 17,000 Tickets PER GAME at Citifield. I believe Citifield is 42,000 with 500 standing room. We will just use the 42,000

        Now 17,000 seats x 81 games = 1.377 million tickets.

What this means is it will not be impossible to get tickets like everyone is saying. Yes it will be a little harder but not nearly as hard as everyone is making it out to be.

        • Saltzy23 says:

Not my point. I dunno if Im just not being clear. Fine, 25,000 total. Gotcha. Leaving 30,000 for any game including Yanks, weekends, etc at Shea. Meaning the secondary market is account holders scalping their seats, PLUS the all of the’lottery winner tickets’, of which many are scalped, right? OK….so,even for a Yanks game there are 31,000 seats “up for grabs”, plus account holders scalping their tix…aka, MANY tickets….

Next year using your numbers 25,000 account holders, and only 20-25K available to the public(even though I think it will be lower, but for the sake of argument) Most account holders are gonna either go, or sell to friends, etc. That only leaves the individual tickets sold, and whatever account tickets are up for sale, WAAAY fewer seats that the 31,000 per game for this year. There are gonna be fewer seats availble for Nats games next year than Yankees games this year.

        • DjDeF says:

I get your point. To me I am a plan holder so personally I am not going to go crazy for the guys who aren’t willing to ante up for a partial plan. Even if you split the partial plan with a few friends and split the games. I was going to consider splitting the full season for next year with a bunch of friends but I am confident partial plans will be available so I am holding off which was the point of my original post.

I searched for Attendance avgs and for 2007 the Mets avg 47,579 at home so I definitely see your concern for getting the tickets. I personally am happy about citifield. I do not completely agree with cutting seats 13,000 BUT I do agree with cutting the seats. Having a packed house day in and day out will add to the atmosphere of going to a game. Go to an early season game when there is nobody pasted 1st base in the upper deck. It is boring and the crowd isn’t a factor. Look at Fenway who has far less seats that is a great atmosphere.

    • Paid Like Mike Gallego says:

Agree completely. The Mets know that they will sell-out Citi Field. As a result, all of their marketing has been designed to increase ticket sales at Shea this season and the past two seasons. By increasing ticket sales, they can then justify charging a higher per ticket cost at Citi Field (with its lower seating capacity).

As a result, fans who spent $1405 per seat for an Upper Deck package in order to ensure some type of “priority” not only need to worry about another 20% increase next year but that fact that Upper Deck prices at Citi Field will be closer to Mezzanine prices at Shea. If that happens, those plan holders will face an even greater ticket price increase than they may have been anticipating at Citi Field.

      • FBones24 says:

The seats will also be closer to the field and comparable to the mezzanine at Shea so it might not be such a bad deal anyway.

      • mackey_sassers_arm says:

I am a season ticket holder in the UR for $1405. I don’t really care how much they make me pay next year. It is not like I am terribly wealthy or anything, but the more they charge me, the more profit there will be able to be had next year.

Basically, I will be selling about 50 games next year and expect to make around twice face value for each ticket.
if the tix are $20 each, I sell for $40 and make $2,000 after spending roughly $1,600 for the full season. $400 profit.
if the tix are $40 each, I sell for $80 and make $4,000 after spending roughly $3,200 for the full season. $800 profit.

Plus, I get to attend 30 games including opening day, all the yankee games, and any other big game during the year. Hopefully playoffs too.

I home they charge me as much as possible because it actually makes it cheaper for me.

        • Saltzy23 says:

YAAAAYYYY…..a smart person….Wait though. I dont have an account. Ill just buy seats from the scalper who bought tickets online. Whats that? Scalpers dont have accounts either, so they wont be able to get seats to sell. Only account holders for the most part will have tickets to sell outside of the 15-20K they sold to the public, and most of those people are fans who are gonna wanna go to the game and not scalp? But wait, that would mean increased demand due to a new stadium, and decreased supply cause so much of the stadium is account holders/lottery winners….but dont worry. This will be the 1st case in history where increased demand and decreased supply will mean stagnant prices….

  11. CaseStreet says:

They should make a policy for ST holders that if they’re not attending the game, they should make the ticket available on a Free Mets Ticket Marketplace. That way more tickets will be available and no empty games.

    • CaseStreet says:

I’m not saying the tix should be free, the access to the Marketplace should be free.

    • cruzer125 says:

I think the problem with the Marketplace is they only allow Full Season Ticket Holders with Premium seats (All Field level, Loge Box, maybe Mezz Box?) sell their tickets so that excludes other season ticket holders.

The price to access the Marketplace is $50. If they were to open it up to ALL season ticket holders and make it free to access for everybody, that would benefit everybody. I believe they do make a percentage on each sale much like StubHub so I would think they’d make back their $50 access fee quick.

      • DjDeF says:

I agree about letting all season ticket holders sell on it. I do get access for free but would certainly be willing to pay the $50 for access. It is rare that I can get really good seats so once or twice a year I will ante up. Also it is good for special occasions like Fathers Day or a Son’s Birthday.

  12. tfc3rid says:

Did they sign Santana? Yes… Get over it.. It’s called negotiation…

  13. Bill Buckner says:

You’re actually upset that Santana signed for less than what you feel he’s worth?

    Scott Boras? Is that you???

  14. DjDeF says:

Then don’t call yourself a Met Fan please. Go away. Go root for the Yankees which it seems you want to

  15. kowalski69 says:

likening Dolan to Wilpon negates any statement you were trying to make. and since you’re a GM in training, i’m glad you don’t run the mets. You’re contending that Wilpon lowballed Santana and you would have liked to see a LONGER contract?

  16. dcmetsfan says:

I’m ashamed to call myself a Mets fan.

And we’re pretty much ashamed that you call yourself a Mets fan. Just go away, loser.

  17. kowalski69 says:

    troll.

  18. Saltzy23 says:

I’ve said this before….but if blogging is for ‘losers’….where does blogging just to be stupid, just to have people tell you you are stupid fall? I mean, NO ONE wants to hear you at this point, so clearly you are just looking for attention….on a blog….by making pointless posts….its actually pretty sad and pathetic…..you cant even make friends on an anoymous blog….

    Three words…and Im actually serious….

    Get. A. Life…..

  19. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

honestly, just become a yankees fan youll be so much happier. eh probably not but we’ll be so much happier.

  20. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

longer and more expensive…haha i like how you call the guy freddie coupons, though he did give out the richest contract ever for a pitcher, because he didnt pay santana arod money, instead he only will make 19-25 mill per year instead of 27 or 30. what a cheap sob.
