Wouldn’t Merengue Night be the last concert? Or what about in October when 56K+ fans are singing Queens’, “We are the champions”?

  2. irish_eagle says:

There’s a word used here (in Ireland) to describe music like Billy Joel’s: tripe

    • Peter says:

      That’s harsh

    • Steve Camas says:

He’s no Christy Moore but I’m not sure tripe is fair. On the other hand, I’ve never heard anyone in Ireland pronounce his name correctly. Oddly the accent is put on the last syllable — he is known as Billy joEL…

  3. Charlie says:

I couldn’t agree more. Who cares about Billy Joel? Is that the best the Mets could do? I hate to say it, but Hannah Montana might be more exciting at this point.

  4. AzMetsFan says:

Why does this concert called the last play in Shea and when it takes place in July?

  5. Zoe says:

“until joel puts on a uniform and strikes out 20 batters, i just can’t get excited about a live greatest hits album in the middle of the season”

    Ha. Beautiful.

  6. tfc3rid says:

Tickets for the first show went on sale last Saturday and were sold out by 10AM…

I have tickets for seating in the field of play…

    • Saltzy23 says:

Id like to personnally thank the Mets ticket office for telling me I had an “exclusive” chance to get tickets for the last concert at Shea on a Wednesday….

Only to add a friggin Friday show a week later….

      Well done…

    • metspre1 says:

      hey tfc3rid,

how did you get tickets? do i have any chance of getting tickets online for the 2nd concert?

      Thanks.

  7. fortleemets says:

How can you say that a Billy Joel concert at Shea doesn’t matter? There has never been a more inconic “New York musician” than Billy Joel. Having a musician other than Billy Joel would have been a joke.

    • Charlie says:

pink floyd was the first and only concert i went to at shea. how can billy beat that?

    • GravediggerHebner says:

I wasn’t alive for the Beatles, but I saw the David Johansen/The Clash/The Who triple bill, which for me makes Billy Joel as the irish fella said, tripe.

      • fortleemets says:

This is a new york event, not a european event. Tell me the last time “Pinball Wizard” was played at a Mets game. How often have we heard “New York State of Mind” before an after a game?

        • GravediggerHebner says:

Well David Johansen was in a band called “The New York Dolls.” My point was to suggest artists that had played at Shea and that I had enjoyed, that’s all. So as to not go on forever I’ll just say that, from “The Stranger” through “An Innocent Man” I was a fan, but in my laymans opinion, while I grew, Billy didn’t and I lost interest in him. Personally I can only take so much “piano rock.” If Shea Stadium wants to celebrate with a dinosaur I can think of better dinosaurs, if Shea wants to celebrate with an alcoholic who drives into walls then I can’t top what they’ve done here.

        • Peter says:

The Bridge and River of Dreams were excellent records.

Throw out some stuff between them and the “Glass Houses” period, but at the end he was very good.

He grew, maybe you just didn’t get it.

        • GravediggerHebner says:

Peter, I didn’t enjoy them, you did. It’s all subjective and opinion. There are no scientific facts either of us can point to to suggest exactly where/why Billy Joel was no longer interesting to me while he continued to be so to you. It simply occurred. Because you did NOT tell me to “suck it” I truly hope you enjoy the shows if you’re fortunate enough to go.

Perhaps you can help me with one issue. I believe but cannot substantiate that Mr. Joel is a Yankee fan, which is a small part of my overall objection to him “playing off” Shea. Any thoughts/info?

        • Peter says:

No reason to tell someone to suck it because they prefer different artists, I agree with you.

My reason for commenting was the notion that he didn’t grow. I think that the Bridge, as well as River of Dreams, aside from the popular songs, show a lot of growth. Or maybe I should say insight. Like Bruce, he writes a lot about his personal life and issues and changes he sees going on around him.

No Man’s Land is a great slap against the spreading suburbanism of Long Island.

I was lucky enough to score tickets, thanks. Saw Billy at the Garden a couple of years ago, great show. You should give him another shot, I’ll make a mix CD for ya!

As for the Yankee fan thing, I think that’s due to the stand of shows he did there back in the 1990’s. I don’t know if he is a fan or not though. How many artists would pass up that opportunity? I even went to one of the shows . . . my only time at Yankee Stadium.

    • beltran the warrior says:

i think there are a few acts who can make that claim over billy joel.

      the ramones
      the talking heads
      blondie

billy joel is a very safe and bland choice to have for this event.

  8. The Milledge Idiot says:

    The venue doesn’t make this a baseball event, it’s just a concert…

  9. GravediggerHebner says:

Posted how much I hated this idea when it was first announced, won’t rehash it all here. I guess its appropriate in that the last time the Mets and Billy Joel were at the pinnacle of their games was in the ’80s (and this is coming from a Met fan).

    • Charlie says:

and both took an unbelievable amount of coke!

    • chmets says:

What’s to hate about having a concert at Shea. A lot of anger about Billy on this thread. I think its great that a kid of Long Island gets to be the last performer to hold a concert at Shea. I think it will be great fun to see Shea transformed for a concert. I went to Bruce in ‘03 and had seats on the field, it was cool entering through the bullpen and looking out to the seats from short centerfield.

  10. metsfanatic says:

He’s a Yankee fan. Nuff said.

  11. metspre1 says:

    hey tfc3rid,

how did you get tickets? do i have any chance of getting through online for the 2nd concert?

  12. Joebaby says:

Considering the other bands that have played there, I’d spend more money to watch McCartney, Starr, Gilmour, Waters, Jagger, Richards, Wood, Townshend, Daltrey and Springsteen take a leak in the corners of the outfield than watch that hack Billy Joel.

    • fortleemets says:

Hack? Tell me songs that he covered.

      • Joebaby says:

I never said he covered anything….

        From websters:

        Hack:
        1. a person, as an artist or writer, who exploits, for money, his or her creative ability or training in the production of dull, unimaginative, and trite work; one who produces banal and mediocre work in the hope of gaining commercial success in the arts: As a painter, he was little more than a hack.

        That’s Billy Joel to a ‘T’.

        • fortleemets says:

This is from Rolling Stone…show me your evidence:

Joel’s career has been marked by tumultuous business moves – his 1972 relinquishing of publishing rights to Family Productions, his legal battles with Elizabeth, and a $90-million lawsuit Joel filed against his ex-manager and former brother-in-law Frank Weber in 1989 alleging fraud and misappropriation of funds (in 1990 he was awarded $2 million and, in a twist, by 1994 Joel was paying Weber $550,000 and forgiving $600,000 still owed). In September 1992 Joel filed another $90 million lawsuit, this time against former lawyer Allen Grubman, charging fraud, malpractice, and breach of contract (in October 1993 Joel and Grubman announced that litigation had ceased; no news of a financial settlement followed). And, not stopping, Joel also filed sued against his onetime tour manager Rick London (Elizabeth’s brother-in-law); Joel then dropped the suit in early 1995. Deeply suspicious of the music business, Joel has fought for lower concert-ticket prices and attacked ticket scalping; he has contributed extensively to philanthropic causes, including many on Long Island.

        • Joebaby says:

          Evidence of what?

  13. Jawlkin Jointz says:

how bout nas? hes a mets fan, and a true new yorker

  14. GravediggerHebner says:

the following is certainly not the bible but it is interesting that Billy Joel’s name doesn’t show up anywhere. What I take from that is that he’s not considered a celebrity. From razorgator.com:

“The Yankees have the reputation for bringing in the big guns, like politicians Rudy Giuliani and Hillary Rodham Clinton and comedian Billy Crystal.

Actors Robin Williams, Denzel Washington, Dustin Hoffman and Adam Sandler have also been spotted rooting for the Bronx Bombers.

Sarah Jessica Parker is a legendary Yank fan, despite husband Matthew Broderick’s predilection for the Mets.

Other celebrity Met fans include actors Viggo Mortenson, Michael Vartan, Tim Robbins, Glenn Close and Julia Stiles – as well as mob scion John “Junior” Gotti.

And proving a sense of humor helps those long-suffering Met fans. Comedians John Leguizamo, Jon Stewart, Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Ray Romano and Kevin James are all on the Amazins’ bench.”

It’s subjective but I’m partial to the Met group.

  16. I’m just pissed that I got tickets to “The Last Show” and now they added more. That’s false advertising. What a shame. BTW, if you didn’t see Billy Joel in NYC during the ‘86 playoffs, you missed some great shows. Oh, and all the kiddies who are throwing around the hate for Billy Joel – suck it.

    • GravediggerHebner says:

I’m 42. I’ll suck on the money and time I saved by not planning for and not going to a concert by an artist I don’t enjoy, while also sucking on not being schookered by promoters into buying tickets to a “last” even that turned out not to be. Of course, originally 12/1/99 at The Garden was supposed to be his last concert too. Chew on that.

      • chmets says:

Standard concert business and simple economics – supply and demand. The 1st show sold out in 1 hr, so they added a 2nd, not surprised one bit. Billy’s retirement show was 12/31/99, the millenium concert. Since then he has gotten healthy and fully sober and returned to performing. His concerts in recent years, particularly his 12 night performance at MSG in ‘06 were some of his best.

  17. mattbez says:

Hey umm… if you don’t like Billy Joel… then don’t go.

Just sit at home and enjoy a nice quiet all-star break.

I’m not sure you internet people realize how big Billy Joel is around here and how many fans he has. I’ve seen him in three separate venues recently (Syracuse, NYC, Boston) and each place was nuts for him. If they were basing their final concert series on the opinions of 30 people who visit metsblog.com then yeah, maybe they shouldn’t have chosen Billy Joel. But I think they decided to reach out to a fan base just a little bit beyond this tiny little message board universe.

  18. andyglass1 says:

This is a Mets site; for those concerned with nominating Billy J (all five foot three inches of him) for sainthood, please go to billyj.com. maybe as a tribute to billy you can wear your crayons, cerucci jeans and a little horn on a chain to every game you attend at Shea. The guy had some nice albums early on and then some very nonconsequential ones during the last 20 yrs. Simon & Garfunkle might be a better NY choice, even if Paul is a Skank fan and Artie cant hit the high notes anymore…. Back to baseball
