By the way, be sure to keep checking David Lennon’s blog for Newsday, as he has been updating the site several times a day, complete with all sorts of news and notes from Tradition Field.

For instance, today, he writes about Duaner Sanchezs and Johan Santana’s bullpen session, Freddy Garcia, Raul Casanova’s 450–foot home run, and the popular Jay Horwitz.

…i still can’t believe Raul Casanova is in Mets camp…

…also, any time i hear his name, i laugh, because i think of the very bad, yet very catchy song from the 1980s by Ultimate Kaos…

Also, for more on Fernando Martinez, who hopes to be in New York at some point during this season, check out the New York Post and the Bergen Record.

In the Daily News, Adam Rubin writes that Ruben Gotay is out of options, which is one of a few reasons why he is likely to make the team’s opening day roster.

Lastly, also in the Daily News, Rubin and Nicholas Hirshon catch up with Gary Carter, who believes he could have helped prevent the team’s collapse during last September.

According to Carter, who turned down an opportunity to manage in Double-A last season, he was in line for the first-base coaches job last season, which eventually went to Howard Johnson.

…in line…what is this, the throne of England…i’ll be honest, carter is starting to sound like a cry-baby of late…i get it, you want to manage…and you’re not managing…the way i understand life, though, when you’re given an opportunity to move up, like, you know, go from Single-A to Double-A, it’s probably not wise to turn it down and wait for something better…sometimes, like it or not, the door only opens once

I believe the proper spelling is “throne”….

metdiva February 20, 2008 at 3:13 pm

Thanks for the clarification….I wasn’t ’shore’ what Matt was talking about :)

ravi3 February 20, 2008 at 3:15 pm

count it

Cerrone February 20, 2008 at 3:38 pm

freudian slip, buddy.

Kent I. Namoe February 20, 2008 at 3:52 pm

As long as its nits we’re picking, its also technically the Throne of Great Britain, not England, at least since the Act of Union in 1707.

theperfectgame February 20, 2008 at 4:11 pm

It’s “it’s”, not “its”…

:-)

Maybe Carter realised the fact that he had more experience managing a baseball team than Willie did before he got the Mets job. Maybe he felt that’s all it took!

sepmets February 20, 2008 at 3:11 pm

Why is Raul Casanove being in camp impossible to believe? There seems to be some gloss missing from this blog.

ScottN February 20, 2008 at 3:21 pm

Carter’s probably right, though he’s a fool to say it. Keep your mouth shut and if the Mets crash again, maybe you get considered for a shot. I’m no fan of Randolph, but frankly the team as it’s constructed shouldn’t need him to win. Frankly, shouldn’t have needed Randolph last year, but we did, and he didn’t have what it took to pull the team together. That’s why would have rather seen him gone this year, but he’s here and hopefully both he and the team will make like ‘06, only better.

CaseStreet February 20, 2008 at 3:21 pm

Couldn’t find the articles on Sanchez, Garcia, and Casanova.

kiteless February 20, 2008 at 3:34 pm

Gary Carter should keep his mouth shut and interview for that managerial job in Montreal, oh wait….

the clap February 20, 2008 at 3:35 pm

I thought Carter was thinking he could’ve helped the Mets out by getting behind the plate and getting some at bats down the stretch. I know the man has an ego, but c’mon now. Well actually, he probably could’ve helped out those chokers.

remaxajf February 20, 2008 at 3:39 pm

Oh Casanova….Me and Romeo ain’t ever been friends…..Arggh!

MetNTX February 20, 2008 at 5:44 pm

That would be Levert singing that!

remaxajf February 20, 2008 at 3:40 pm

*never been friends

Carter has an ego bigger then his man breasts (check the 86 Mets Video and thank me later they are bigger than Mickelson’s) to say he could of stopped last seasons downfall is a joke. The man drove around New York for 8 years with a Carter #8 Liscense Plate, the only thing he would of been good for would be rediculous quotes. He was mad that Hojo and Rickey got jobs when Hojo was brought in because Wright Loves him and Henderson was brought in to work with Reyes (albeit for his running and not for his laziness and poker game) Carter needs to stop whining he was offered another minor league position and turned it down because his feelings were hurt. If he stayed in the organization they may have moved him up but now him and Backman can go coach Indy ball together.

pboegel February 20, 2008 at 4:10 pm

Wow, what a really out on a limb thing to say for Gary. I mean nothing like being melodramatic about something that will never be able to be proven until Doc Brown gets that Delorian rolling.

dykstradude444 February 20, 2008 at 4:17 pm

If Johan married Hannah Montana, she would be Hannah Montana Santana….. He should be so lucky..

guierllNO MOta February 20, 2008 at 4:40 pm

if I married Hannah Montana I’d be a …..pedohpile? DOH

dykstradude444 February 20, 2008 at 4:44 pm

it might be worth the 5-10, have you seen her?

gipper913i February 20, 2008 at 5:45 pm

thats great. great. i mean youre so right. 5 right. maybe not even 10?

Steve In Tampa February 20, 2008 at 4:43 pm

…i still can’t believe Raul Casanova is in Mets camp…

I’m a little surprised the Rays didn’t hold on to him, he has some upside, still something about all of the Tampa Bay rejects in camp (Lugo, Stokes and Casanova) makes me uncomfortable

Don February 20, 2008 at 7:18 pm

i’m w/ carter. in fact he should have been the HEAD manager over willee, forget this first and third base coach business. carter can say whatever he wants, he brought this team a ring. He got the first hit with two outs to start the unbelievable rally in GAME 6! without him, the mets last championship is in the 60’s/

ownership and willee did not want a more capable manager and fan favorite to undermined him or breathe down his neck.

The guy is a hall of famer, cocky, but a leader. it is possible he could have made that one game difference that would have put the Mets in the postseason last year.

Mister Koo February 20, 2008 at 3:13 pm

Valentin is a battle tested veteran. Gotay is not…

DjDeF February 20, 2008 at 3:24 pm

Why is everyone on Gotay? He stinks. We traded the guy for Jeff Keppinger. Remember when the trade was made? Everyone said this is a nothing deal. It is still a nothing deal. Get over it his offensive numbers are a product of a small sample size and he can’t play defense

circelli17 February 20, 2008 at 3:50 pm

When Carter decided he wanted to wear an Expos cap in the hall he lost me as a fan. He can go take a flying leap for all I care

Mister Koo February 20, 2008 at 3:33 pm

I meant it as a joke. You know how Willie love his veterans.

guierllNO MOta February 20, 2008 at 3:54 pm

he decided to ear an expos cap???? the rules have been updated sir…is it still called the Wade Boggs rule?

kidfromqueens February 20, 2008 at 4:01 pm

Exactly….he didn’t decide which cap to wear- the HOF decides for the player now.

PedroMANIA February 20, 2008 at 8:16 pm

wow try to keep up to date.

1. you can no longer choose what cap to wear as already stated

2. when he was put in the hall as an expo he commented he wish he went in as a met

MetNTX February 20, 2008 at 5:43 pm

I thought it was Levert who sung “Casanova”

Dude nothing wrong with 80s music
