Burkhardt: Duaner is Throwing Gas
By Matthew Cerrone - Feb 20, 2008 12:43 pm

SNY’s Kevin Burkhardt sent in the following text message…

…sight of the day has got to be Duaner Sanchez, who got a buzz cut and who threw live batting practice…he was throwing gas…just two swings against him in his session: a David Wright foul tip and a swing and miss by Damion Easley

…as you can see in the photo from kevin, Moises Alou is set to step in to the box…remember, go slow mo…go slow

Burkhardt will have clips from the day in Port St. Lucie, as well as a one-on-one interview with Willie Randolph during Geico’s SportsNite tonight on .

Replace Green with Church, Glavine with Johan, the Lawrence/Pelfrey/Humber/Sosa #5 spot with Pedro, Mota with Sanchez and I have a good feeling…

    • djbutler says:

…good feeling. I like that let’s leave it that people. No one jinx the team with any proclamations. Let’s make this the Met fan mantra this year. When people ask how do you think the Mets are going to do this year, just say “I have a good feeling.” Or, as we used to say in my old neighborhood, “I’m feelin’ it.”

  2. remaxajf says:

Ahh….we are so close to Alou fouling off a Duaner Sanchez pitch off his foot. I say he misses 70 games.

  3. kiteless says:

All this bullpen competition can only benefit the team. Unfortunately I only think one spot is available at this point. Heilman, Sanchez, Wagner, Schoenweis, Feliciano are all under contract and will be there come opening day. Jorge Sosa as the long man? Pelfrey? Not much wiggle room.

    • metsrule7 says:

I still believe that Register will make the team as the long man to start the season with Pelfrey and Sosa starting the year in AAA to be used in emergency starts for when El Duque needs a week off. I doubt the Mets would have selected Register in the rule IV to just let him go back to his old team after spring training. Unless he has a really awful spring training and Peterson sees no potential in him, he’ll be the Mets long man to start the season.

      • Danny says:

Do you remember a guy named Mitch Wylie? The Mets drafted him in Rule V draft 2 years ago from the Giants. He didn’t make the team, and the Mets offered him back to the Giants for $25,000 or whatever the rule requires. The Giants declined and the Mets actually held onto him at AAA all year.

This is easily a scenario that Register could follow. The Mets won’t put Register on the 25-man roster unless he earns a spot.

Thats why I said he’ll be on the opening day roster unless Register has an awful spring training and shows zero potential to Peterson. With the recent view of prospects being so valuable to teams, a pitcher who led the AA in saves after being a starter for the beginning of the season has some potential to be a solid cheap bullpen guy in a year or two, why give that back to the team that left him available and you practically get him for free. The Nationals took Flores and he didn’t earn a spot on the roster, he was given a spot because they knew if he went back to the Mets, he wouldn’t be listed in the rule V draft again and in a couple years, Flores could be a great addition to their team. The mets can afford to have Register fill the Sele spot in the rotation because even I can go out there and put up the same numbers as Sele did last year. Register can’t be worse than that and Pelfrey should be in the minors pitching more innings and working on his stuff. The long man hardly is used or is only used when the game is out of hand so why waste that spot on someone that could pitch more innings in the minors. Register is the perfect person for the long man, mop up role spot for the year. With Santana and a reliable 5th starter, our bullpen won’t need to be used as much especially early in the season so you give Register a chance to stay with the team. Why keep a Sosa if he won’t pitch more than an inning a week since Heilman, Sanchez and Feliciano are all going to need consistent work to stay sharp. If the bullpen starts to get taxed and you need that extra arm and Register is struggling, then you send him back mid season. But thats a last resort in my eyes, you have to keep the young potential pitcher.

        • stickguy says:

well, the Mets might have a spot on the 40 man. They will try to hang onto Register to the end of ST, and once Colorado has their roster full, then offer him back.

That way, the Rox would have to cut someone else to bring back Register. And if they don’t, the Mets can send him back to AAA.

how much longer do we have wagner, bec i can see duaner becoming the next elite closer in the league

    • Xavier22 says:

his contract is up at the end of 2009

    • cbusmetsfan says:

The Mets signed him to a 4 year deal and this is his 3rd year so one more year after this. I read that K-Rod indicated this would be his last year with the Halos. I would throw a bunch of money at him for next year if they can. Though, if Sanchez returns to old form, he is a cheaper alternative and can just slide on in after Wagner is done.

      • ravi3 says:

But it will still weaken the rest of our bullpen

        • darkstar73 says:

not if by then Kunz is ready for be an 8th inning guy or Joe Smith is ready for that or the 7th inning. And who knows, if Rustich doesn’t work out as a starter, he could be a late inning reliever for us as well. It depends on Sanchez, but i’m torn on signing Krod, and either way, we have Wagner for another year and Krod is a free agent this offseason. Don’t see it happening.

        • zer09 says:

Joe Smith will never be an 8th inning guy. They like guys there that can throw gas. Joe won’t be able to throw hard enough to earn that spot…I have a feeling that if a reliever goes down before opening day, Pelfrey might get a shot at filling in the spot…then again, we have plenty of guys waiting for to fill those holes as well….may be they really do plan on Pelf getting a full year at AAA….Let’s not forget that there is still Wise, Register, and Sosa, of which only one has a spot on the roster as it’s set now…

please be filthy, sanchez! I should really temper my expectations for him; I’ve built him up as the second coming of goose gossage in my mind, when in fact he’ll probably be just plain good. I suppose it’s all relative, though: after mota, just plain good looks like superfantasticawesomeness.

  6. cb32 says:

Anyone else think that if Sanchez is indeed healthy he is WAY ahead of schedule and burning himself out unnecessarily early on in spring training? Everything I read is how he is already throwing 50 pitches, throwing gas, every day. I just hope he is not rushing things. Will he have anything left by August?

    • metsrule7 says:

With Santana and a better # 5 starter, the Mets bullpen will be used way less this year so I wouldn’t worry about anyone being burnt out going into October. I’d be more worried about getting enough work each week for everyone so they aren’t rusty when they are needed.

    • Another Matt says:

One way to look at it is, if he’s ahead of schedule, he can probably back off a bit in the last couple of weeks before the season to make sure he’s fresh.

It is a bit of a worry though, but it’s great to see him chomping at the bit and ready to prove his dedication to the team

Ok First off… What kind of Camera Phone does Kevin Burkhart Have. My Camera Phone pics don’t look nearly as crisp.

  8. krumbledkookie says:

It all looks good now, until Dirty Sanchez get suspended fifty games for hittin the Deca…

  9. Hanes4u says:

You guys are forgetting about Matt Wise..who came over from the Brewers in the offseason. Dude hit a guy in the head and was so shook up about it he couldnt hit the strike zone the rest of the year..and was released afterwards. Another sort of “Project” for the likes of Rick Peterson..but where does he fit in? Prior to the whole head beaning, he was putting together some nice numbers..

Remember, Duaner came over from the Dodgers thru FA i think, and he had a problem with his windup and his arm slot i believe, and Peterson tweaked that and then he went out there and threw that ridiculous amount of scoreless innings in ‘06. If he returns back to anywhere near that, he’ll be 100x the force that Mota was – BTW Mota was the freakin anti-christ..thank god he’s gone.

    • stickguy says:

it was a trade for that Japanese (Korean?) flash in the pan picher. Had a good finish, and sucked as soon as he got to the DOdgers.
