well, the Mets might have a spot on the 40 man. They will try to hang onto Register to the end of ST, and once Colorado has their roster full, then offer him back.

That way, the Rox would have to cut someone else to bring back Register. And if they don't, the Mets can send him back to AAA.

Thats why I said he'll be on the opening day roster unless Register has an awful spring training and shows zero potential to Peterson. With the recent view of prospects being so valuable to teams, a pitcher who led the AA in saves after being a starter for the beginning of the season has some potential to be a solid cheap bullpen guy in a year or two, why give that back to the team that left him available and you practically get him for free. The Nationals took Flores and he didn't earn a spot on the roster, he was given a spot because they knew if he went back to the Mets, he wouldn't be listed in the rule V draft again and in a couple years, Flores could be a great addition to their team. The mets can afford to have Register fill the Sele spot in the rotation because even I can go out there and put up the same numbers as Sele did last year. Register can't be worse than that and Pelfrey should be in the minors pitching more innings and working on his stuff. The long man hardly is used or is only used when the game is out of hand so why waste that spot on someone that could pitch more innings in the minors. Register is the perfect person for the long man, mop up role spot for the year. With Santana and a reliable 5th starter, our bullpen won't need to be used as much especially early in the season so you give Register a chance to stay with the team. Why keep a Sosa if he won't pitch more than an inning a week since Heilman, Sanchez and Feliciano are all going to need consistent work to stay sharp. If the bullpen starts to get taxed and you need that extra arm and Register is struggling, then you send him back mid season. But thats a last resort in my eyes, you have to keep the young potential pitcher.

Joe Smith will never be an 8th inning guy. They like guys there that can throw gas. Joe won't be able to throw hard enough to earn that spot...I have a feeling that if a reliever goes down before opening day, Pelfrey might get a shot at filling in the spot...then again, we have plenty of guys waiting for to fill those holes as well....may be they really do plan on Pelf getting a full year at AAA....Let's not forget that there is still Wise, Register, and Sosa, of which only one has a spot on the roster as it's set now...

You guys are forgetting about Matt Wise..who came over from the Brewers in the offseason. Dude hit a guy in the head and was so shook up about it he couldnt hit the strike zone the rest of the year..and was released afterwards. Another sort of "Project" for the likes of Rick Peterson..but where does he fit in? Prior to the whole head beaning, he was putting together some nice numbers..

Remember, Duaner came over from the Dodgers thru FA i think, and he had a problem with his windup and his arm slot i believe, and Peterson tweaked that and then he went out there and threw that ridiculous amount of scoreless innings in '06. If he returns back to anywhere near that, he'll be 100x the force that Mota was - BTW Mota was the freakin anti-christ..thank god he's gone.

not if by then Kunz is ready for be an 8th inning guy or Joe Smith is ready for that or the 7th inning. And who knows, if Rustich doesn't work out as a starter, he could be a late inning reliever for us as well. It depends on Sanchez, but i'm torn on signing Krod, and either way, we have Wagner for another year and Krod is a free agent this offseason. Don't see it happening.

Do you remember a guy named Mitch Wylie? The Mets drafted him in Rule V draft 2 years ago from the Giants. He didn't make the team, and the Mets offered him back to the Giants for $25,000 or whatever the rule requires. The Giants declined and the Mets actually held onto him at AAA all year.

This is easily a scenario that Register could follow. The Mets won't put Register on the 25-man roster unless he earns a spot.
