News: Minaya Not Interested in Garcia
By Matthew Cerrone - Feb 20, 2008 4:15 pm

According to Burt Hubbach, at his blog for the New York Post, Mets GM Omar Minaya said he is not interested in Freddy Garcia, who was only in town to say hello to his friends Pedro Martinez and Johan Santana.

Earlier today at SI.com, Jon Heyman wrote that Garcia has been seen with his agents at Mets camp in Port St. Lucie.

Garcia is represented by the Greenbergs, the same people who represent Jose Reyes and Santana.

Minaya also said it continues to look like the team will go to salary arbitration with Oliver Perez, who is a free agent after this season, reports John Delcos at his blog for the Journal News.

Delcos also provides a quick update from Willie Randolph, who talked with reporters today about Scott Schoeneweis, who left camp; Moises Alou and Jose Valentin; and his talk with the team, which did not reference ‘the Collapse,’ and will not do so until a 25–man roster is finalized later in camp.

    offtopic..i know
but what does everyone think will happen with the rotation for the home opener? I’ll only be in town for Tuesday and Wednesday than I have a trip planned for the weekend…

I’m hoping somehow I get to see Johan…

    opinions?

    • mets17 says:

I believe that who ever starts the Season opener will not get the home opener and the person who starts the 2nd game of the season gets the home opener. So if Johan gets opening day you will probably see Pedro pitch

    • JDuelz (Athens, GA) says:

I’m sooooo hoping for a Santana/Smoltz showdown in Atlanta on 4/6… Anyone know when tickets go on sale?

    • James says:

This may be a reach, it may not. Oliver Perez, even if he is pitching well, perhaps Minaya should at the least explore trading him at the deadline. I know that sounds crazy when in the heat of the season and (hopefully) in 1st place, but Perez is not that good for the huge money!, at least not consistent enough. I say best case scenario, trade Perez in the heat of the race for a decent return, because Pelfrey is ready to take charge, and that slot. Refurbish the system, the hell with Boras and the Mets still come out on top. It may be a reach, it may not!

Although the thought of facing Perez in the post season after trading him, well… LOL!!

      Comments?

I’d be interested to hear your Comments

  2. Hanes4u says:

I know that Ollie wants a ton of money..but think about it this way – he’s a solid pitcher, young as heck, with a ton of upside (not too much wear on his arm, has shown durability, has nasty stuff, and he’s a freaking lefty) I know the downsides are that he’s a clown when it comes to being on the mound and a routine windup/mechanics, and that drives peterson NUTS!- but is that worth letting him walk?

Look at the FA market next year, and even a few years down the road..theres not much out there..(freaking Carlos Silva is garbage and is getting $10mm+ a year?)

It might make sense to try to work out a 4-5 year deal with him, for NOT Santana/Zito money (which he is asking for apparently) but for somewhere in between Silva and Santana..which is far and further between.

I dunno – just seems like we stumbled across a kid who has talent and can do something..might as well not let him walk during FA.

    • dave27 says:

Seems the Mets would like to – Boras has to use every B-level player in his rolodex to rebuild his rep after being told to wait in the car by ARod though, so forget it.

      • nrmax88 says:

Comments like this are ridiculous and stupid. Boras is by far the best agent in the world when it comes to getting money for his guys. Repare his rep to who? He has more money then half the guys he represents. A-Rod got the biggest contract ever, that is really something he needs to come back from. Who cares if he was in the room or not. It isnt Boras’ job to come out looking good, its his job to make his guy money, and he got his guy 300 million. Also, A-rods situation has little to nothing to do with how Boras is handling PErez. This has been Boras’ MO for ever.

    • astoriametsfan72 says:

it’s not up to the Mets – it’s up to Boras and Perez on how to succeed. The mets have offered a contract extension, but Boras is hell bent in taking Ollie to free agency in the fall. No way he signs a contract extension.

    • darkstar73 says:

why would you think the Mets wouldn’t want to re-up him? It’s already been talked about, they were trying to get him to agree to a contract, its Scott Boras, he wants Ollie to go to free agency, and therefore Ollie will, we’d have to blow him out of the water right now in order for him to stay. I thought that was kind of obvious, Scott Boras=free agency

  3. dave27 says:

On Garcia: Why not? How much could it cost?

On rotation: I think the Mets should open with Pedro, but not just to get Johan the home opener, but to throw both he and Ollie at the Phillies.

    You’d go with:
    Marlins: Pedro, Johan, Maine
    Braves: Ollie, Duque, Pedro
    Phillies: Johan, Maine, Ollie

For anyone thinking it’s too early to set up the rotation, we lost by 1 game last year. Johan for the home opener won’t break anyone’s heart either.

    • dave27 says:

PS, that rotation looks gorgeous when you break it into 3 game series like that!

    • DjDeF says:

I get that he would be cheap to sign but come June when he would be available it would cause some issues. I know it is a stretch and Duque will get hurt but say he is pitching well and is healthy and the reports come out Garcia is ready it will be the “When does El Duque get hurt so Garcia pitches” game or the “Bad game by El Duque Garcia slides right in Duque to the pen” game. It can’t be good.

I get the idea that he is cheap and all but if we sign him and it looks like he has no chance of pitching until El Duque or another pitcher gets hurt the rumblings will start.

      • CaseStreet says:

If we don’t need him, why couldn’t we trade him before the deadline?

        • DjDeF says:

You could just trade him but who knows what you will get back for a guy that wouldn’t have pitched in a year and a half. Add in that they would have to pay him although cheap would be a waste.

        • dave27 says:

There are rules about trading recently-signed free-agents but not sure how they’d apply in this case. No guarantee he’s ready come June in any case.

        • metterman says:

whether we think we could use him or not is really irrelevant what’s importnat here is 2 thinkgs: 1) Gracia was in camp so he must like the mets at least a little bit, which is always a good just in case. I can’t see freddy getting any offers or signing anywhere before the beginning of may anyway. 2) This was omar being a good GM. never ever tell your opponents what your are thinking or are up to. lets not give any other team any more ammo to sign a guy just to keep him off of the mets. Good answer by omar. If any pitcher goes down between now and may (god forbid knock on wood) Freddy may not be a bad mid season pickup.

    • ASod1975 says:

It would break mine. I live in Florida and I’ve got tickets to the Mets-Marlins opener. Although seeing Pedro wouldn’t be bad either, I’d love to say I was there for Johan’s first game as a Met!

      • nrmax88 says:

So then buy tickets for the second game also. I live in NY and am flying out for the whole series. Personally I couldnt complain about watching Pedro, but it will be cool to watch both. Its not like the tickets cost much there. Buy a nosebleed tick and just move down.

  4. Saltzy23 says:

2 of topic posts in a row….I added this to the end of the Phils rivalry thread……so mine is even worse….

I think Burgos having $270,000 worth of ‘bling’ stolen from his hotel room when he makes $415,000/yr maybe the funniest thing I’ve ever heard…..front page NY Post….

Serves him right for A. Blowing a Qtr Mil on worthless crap,B. most definitly for packing it up to take to camp with him….

“Ok, glove check—-wallet check—–$270,000 worth of diamonds and gold check”…..

Man, I would have LOOOVED to see the look on his face when he got back and it was gone…

    Too bad, so sad….lol….

    • DjDeF says:

Hey Burgos it is called a hotel safe. You can’t trust hotel staff with $20 laying around nevermind $270,000. And if it wasn’t hotel staff it isn’t that hard to break into rooms or jump into a room when the maid is there.

      • Saltzy23 says:

He was set up. Its not the staff. He either blabbed to someone, or someone knew that he brought it. You’d have to have a brass set to be cleaning a room and snag a qtr mil in jewels…. (LOL….thats the part that I love. LOOOOVE. He BROUGHT it with him. $270,000 in gold weighs a LOT….100% to show off)…..I could not be happier about this….

Hotel safe?….how about a safe deposit box….I have to hear why it was with him….

        • MealTicket says:

Um, why are you guys happy about someone getting his stuff taken? Indifferent? That I can understand. Appalled that he spends so much loot on jewelry? I’m down with that too. But hearing that he got a lot of valuable things stolen doesn’t make me happy. I just don’t hate the guy. I have no strong opinion about him one way or another.

He didn’t ask to be traded to the Mets, if that’s what this is all secretly about.

        • Saltzy23 says:

If the story was his house was broken into. Or he was just driving around and was carjacked. Or he gave it to someone to clean and they disappeared….I would still call him a MORON for spending $270k on ‘bling’ when he makes $415k(God I cant get enough of that word), but I would have empathy. Some sympathy

You tell me ONE good reason why a guy who should be concentrating on getting healthy and on baseball needs to bring that with him on what essentially should be a business trip and Ill agree with you….

‘A fool and his money will soon be seperated’….

When you make an boneheaded decision and have the worst come to pass, I dont feel bad for you….never will.

        • nrmax88 says:

“)…..I could not be happier about this….”

Oh wow, what a cool guy, I am so impressed with Saltzy’s coolness. This guy is just the mecca of all things cool for saying he is happy somebody got robbed.

“LOL….thats the part that I love. LOOOOVE. He BROUGHT it with him.”

Know wht is even more funny? Burgos may have gotten jacked for a quarter mil, but he will make that back next year, whereas you will most likely never even have a quarter million in anything that can be stolen from you. Burgos is a 22 year old fireballer who at worst will settle in as a middle reliever and in this market end up making 30 million dollar minimum over his career if he can be even a league average 6th or 7th inning guy.

        • JDuelz (Athens, GA) says:

Wow, you’re a certified hater, and you don’t even know it.

        • Saltzy23 says:

And all of that accounts for his stupidity how? Im saying I’m happy that someone that goes out of his way to JUST ‘look cool’ for no reason whatsoever got his cumupins….

Unlike you I dont bow down to people my age just because they have a good fastball. I root my ass off for the Mets, no individual person. If you dont think taking $30k(I guess it was revised) worth of diamonds to spring training and leaving it in your hotel room unattended is just incredibly stupid then I dunno what to tell you….

        • JDuelz (Athens, GA) says:

It’s cool that you’re portraying yourself as not being superficial and all, but isn’t hating on someone who lost their high-priced jewelry because you’re not superficial even worse? Just a thought.

As for me, I like nice things… Sorry?

        • Saltzy23 says:

I guess your definition of nice is different than mine. I dunno, a $15k cross just doesnt ‘do’ it for me. Sorry. BWM’s, Ferrari’s, yachts, mansions, LOVE em. You know what though. I still wouldnt bring a Ferrari down to ST and leave the doors unlocked. Im the most superficial person in the country. I love stuff. I love it cause I love it. I never once (and I do OK for myself) have rubbed others noses in my fortune(both literal and figerative)….

Im sorry. On my death bed I will stil say that ‘bling’ is the stupest thing Ive ever heard of. I wonder why so many athletes that have made millions go broke after they retire…..You think it maybe purchases like diamiond and ruby encrusted necklaces and $100k Escalades?…..Funny, Ive never seen Jeter have to self promote via ridiculous trinkets….

  5. murpheeee says:

    when is the arbitration hearing?

    • murpheeee says:

to answer my own Q – it’s tomorrow Feb 21st

      • rustystaubsillegitmateson says:

you guys know were damned if we win and damned if we lose tomorrow in arbitration cuz if oliver loses he will be pissed at the organization and if he wins it will drive up his price even more if he has another good year
btw how did the confidence rating go down?

        • BSMITTYFDNY says:

Good point. Noticed that myself. Although its only .2 points why did the confidence rating go down? The confidence and optimism at spring training is high right now and I guess hasnt spilled over to us fans in the North yet. I voted 9 by the way because after all no team is perfect. We could still use a right handed OF who can spell Alou or bat against lefties if Church fails at such. Also another arm in AAA with some experience would be nice for insurance to the big club in case of injuries. There are holes in AAA staff left by Santana deal. Otherwise we are ready to roll!

        • nrmax88 says:

Because while we are now set up well for this year, nothign after that is certain, nothing at all, it is not even a given that we will be good in 2009. 3/5 of the rotation possibly gone, 1B, LF to fill, old closer, etc. No farm system, all of the eggs are in one basket, and the franchise was in much, much better shape as far as future success goes. There is a real chance that by 2010 we could be the Whitesox of right now. A lot depends on this draft.

        • nrmax88 says:

*and the franchise was in much, much better shape as far as future success goes* before the Santana trade that is

  6. metsrule7 says:

I say you give him what he wants this year to make him happy and maybe he’ll be willing to accept a little less for a long term contract next year or atleast be happy with Mets management. You don’t want to make him feel snubbed and then he leaves in free agency.

When I found out he was part of the trade when we got him from Pitt, I was ecstatic and predicted that he’d win 18 games for us last year. I even suggested the Mets try to work out a long term deal with him before last season started when his value was lower and pretty much everyone here thought that was an idiot and predicted that Ollie wouldn’t last thru the season and some even suggested we drop him before the season. Its great how things change in 1 year but now its going to cost the mets if they want to keep Ollie locked up.

    • The Captain says:

umm lets just use Perez for this years title, as he’ll use our championship for a big contract. Plain and simple, Perez is simply not that good to waste big numbers on. We’ll have to settle for 2 draft picks of which one we’ll give up for signing Teixeira. So losing Perez for Teixeira plus a sandwich pick is a nice concellation prize. We’ll also lose Delgado if the Tex route was taken, so lets put it like this Perez equal to Teixeira, and Delgado for the sandwich pick.

  7. adropofvenom says:

FWIW: Am I the only one that finds it odd that Garcia’s agents were there also. If it was a friendly visit, there would be no need for having the Agents there. They’re just trying to downplay the interest IMO.

    • MudvilleNine says:

Could it be they were there because of their other client? You know, the one with the $137.5 million contract. If Garcia had told them he’d like to try and sign with the Mets, I’m sure they would have shown up because Santana is there.

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

they maybe just wanted to be around just in case. i mean it is their job to sell their client so im sure they talked with omar. even if it was unsuccessful.

  8. rustystaubsillegitmateson says:

i agree venom – garcia was probably expecting a 7- 10 million dollar contract
btw guys how do i get on the bus for th3 april 20th philly game?

  9. The Captain says:

I could go either way Garcia, but it is nice to see Omar staying focused with the game plan of young, defense, speed, and by not signing injured additions regardless of how the other options are rationalized.
On Scott Schoeneweis, he’s the worst player on the Mets. Doesnt even deserve to be part of our team.

    • dave27 says:

Given his track record, and his improvements in the 2nd half last year, I’d give him another shot.

He’ll probably be one of the top candidates this year for the “Target of Irrational Hatred, Scorn, and Booing of the Shea Faithful” position we are obligated to fill every year, however, so whatever.

  10. Blue_n_Orange says:

Scott Schoeneweis left camp? WTF? I don’t love the guy, but I would certainly much rater have him healthy than opening the season on the DL.

  11. rustystaubsillegitmateson says:

    cap
sco was pretty decent the last month of the season – if he is used correctly and his achilles is healed i do believe he will be effective

    • nrmax88 says:

Its not his achilles i think it was a claf muscle, but yure right, he was pretty solid down the stretch. I could see a strong performance this year. He said the severed tendon will never fully be replaced, but he did lots of work to strengthen everything around it during the offseason.

      • nrmax88 says:

I take it back, I actually am not sure if it is his achilles, but I think it is in his calf of thigh, not sure exactly what it was.

  12. edwin nieves says:

Garcia’s age and numbers are worth the gamble. You can never have too much pitching. Ollie is talented but a head case. Let him get his $$$ from Arb. squeeze a championship out of him then let him and his egotistical agent go for the money. And, what is wrong with “Blowenweiss”?

  13. BSMITTYFDNY says:

Schoeneweis isnt hurt fellas so relax. Said he had family issues to attend to and has Randolph’s permission to leave. He is healthy and uninjured so dont panic. Who knows what the family issues are? Dont want to speculate but must be serious enough if he neede to leave camp one week in. Hope its nothing that bad with his family. Otherwise I am not counting on much from him anyway. If he has a good year its gravy to me. My main concern is Sanchez and he looks healthy thus far, in shape, and is way ahead of the rest of the pitchers considering he has been working out and throwing sice November at Port St. Lucie. I am optimistic about him this year. If he is close to where he was before the accident then he and Heilman will lock it down for Wagner meaning many leads protected equalling wins. I’m so psyched for the season. I am going to spring games against Houston and Boston with my old man 3/9, and 3/10. Front row behind home plate. Go every year and players are so layed back and fan friendly there. I urge all you fellow Met fans to try to make it once to St. Lucie for the experience. You wont regret it.

  14. Agbayanitodeepleftcenter says:

As the biggest Ollie Pea fan going I’m sorry but he really does have some balls if he bolts the Mets. I’m totally aware that pitchers go for the top buck everywhere but shouldn’t this guy feel some loyalty to the team that basically recharged his career?

Granted maybe Boras is more to blame for this than Perez but I do hope that he stays a Met for a long, long time.
If you want to look at this one way the Mets will probably be saying goodbye to El Duque and Delgado next year so right there we would be saving money to sign him long term (considering Pelfrey takes over Duque’s spot). Not to mention if Fernando Martinez is ready to contribute next year (when Alou’s contract is up) than that’s even more money saved.

    • Paid Like Mike Gallego says:

In a perfect world, teams would be loyal to players and players would be loyal to teams and teams would be loyal to fans. Unfortunately, we don’t live in a perfect world. players use leverage when they have it (i.e., during the primes of their careers) and teams use leverage when they have it (i.e., tail end of a player’s career … see all of the unsigned veterans like Mike Piazza).

    • stickguy says:

Even worse, if he does leave, I could see him landing on the Yankees. But, if so, at least it will be a good thing if he reverts to bad Ollie!

WOnder if the new Hankee stadium is still going to be a lefty hitting paradise, or will it play more even?

  15. AppleInTheHat says:

We all know how the Mets hate going into arbitration hearings with its players but it looks like it will happen with Perez/Boros. Maybe I am cynical, but does anyone else think this is Boros’ way of forcing Perez to hear all the bad things the Mets have to say about him in an arbritation hearing? It could be Boros’ way of driving a stake between the Mets and Perez in order to prevent Perez from wanting to resign with the Mets, encouraging him to become a free agent.

    • nrmax88 says:

Yeah, Boras wants to start a problem with Minaya, while Minaya has always been willing to work with Boras, when some other GM’s dont, even while the Mets have other Boras clients, and will want other Boras clients in the future. Minaya also has the 3rd or 4th biggest market in baseball, so I am sure Boras wants to put that entire market in jeapordy for all of his clients. You guys are friggen silly. He is doing his job. He isnt doing this because he has some crazy hatred for the Mets. You have got to be kidding me. He is doing it because they are like 30 percent apart in the negotiations. And just becuase Perez will test free agency does not mean he will not be back, they will just have to pay up like everyone else, and if they offer something close to his top offer, I think he comes back.

  16. Get oliver signed now before he wins another 15

  17. gomets6091 says:

sorry, this is totally off-topic, but does anyone know if there is a good rendering of the dimensions/layout of Citi Field, as in the actual playing field (not just the general stadium layout). Mets.com has all the computer rendered images, but none of them really show the field layout too well, and I thought I remembered seeing some images of what the field itself was gonna look like, but I can’t find them now.

  18. rockets212 says:

unless the mets decide to make a real effort to sign him and get some kind of agreement in at least principal, and assuming no injuries, why dont we try to trade him at the trading deadline? For perez, esecially if he can sign an extension with his new team (for more than waht the mets are offering), we can proboably get pitching prospects or a younger mojor leage ready pitcher and let pelfrey have his real shot. Itll give us more for the future and we only miss 2 months of him.
Thats assuming no injuries, if Pedro/Duque are going to miss significant time then you got to keep him, but assuming no major injuries and a good return, maybe gettin what you can for him and let someone else overpay him like crazy is the best.

  19. bonatom says:

Completely off topic (sorry Matt). Did anyone else read this AROD quote.

“Andy is one of the greatest human beings I’ve ever met,” Rodriguez said. “I have two daughters — well, I have one and one on the way. If I had a daughter, I would want ‘em to marry Andy Pettitte. The age difference might be a little awkward, but in today’s day and age anything is possible.”

WHAT A WEIRDO!!! Who says that!

    • metsftw says:

i think he’s sort of exaggerating.

irrational a-rod hate makes baby jesus cry.

    • mackey_sassers_arm says:

And what does he mean, “if I had a daughter”??? Right after he said that he has two. Definitely a weirdo.
