Quote: There will be a Brawl
By Matthew Cerrone - Feb 20, 2008 1:21 pm

During a recent interview with Sports Radio 950 in Philadelphia, ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark had the following to say, when asked if the Mets and Phillies genuinely do not like one another, given their public comments of late:

“I think there’s defintely something going on there. I don’t really think this is for the fans. I think it’s for each other. I really do…There were guys in (Philadelphia’s locker room) the other day, suggesting, ‘There will be a brawl,’ and we sure hope we’re all there for that.”

it’s amazing how fast this has all gone down, too…because, it was only a couple of seasons ago we were all talking about how there is so little rivalry between these two teams, because they never really competed for first place at the same time…until last season…and so, bam, here we are…collapses…war of words…talk of brawls…it’s exciting…and long overdue

Damn…too bad we still don’t have Difelice to be the enforcer. That was all he was good for and we could sure use him now. Who is going to protect Reyes, Wright, Beltran and Pedro when the punches start flying?

    • DjDeF says:

      Sandy Alomar again

    • bonatom says:

We still have Ollie Perez…. Although I am not a fan of my Picther’s getting into fights.. He is CRAZY… I mean Seriously Nuts!!

Or we could just have El Duque running after them shouting “I NO GO BULLPEN!!”.. That is frightening

  2. mikepmets says:

Let’s hope the Met wives don’t get involved otherwise Brett Myers will have a field day.

    • boozermetsfan says:

      Agreed. he is trash.

him and beefarino are two meathead hothead punks.

    • gomets6091 says:

let’s hope the Phillies wives DO get involved….I’m sure there’s a few Mets who wouldn’t mind ripping Anna Benson’s top off, plus Cole Hamels is married to a model (and former playmate, I believe)

      • jjacome says:

Andy the Phillies batboy in a louder than normal voice: “HEY MR BENSON, HERE’S THAT MAPQUEST PRINTOUT FOR THE BROTHEL YOU ASKED FOR!!”

  3. SodaPopinski says:

mets should hire some local goons to be “bench coaches”

  4. professor met says:

I wouldnt mind seeing Pedro “mush” another old man.

    • mets17 says:

I would love to see him roll Charlie Manuel that would be great, Manuel could start crying and say how he embarrassed his family also.

  5. barrylyons says:

Are the Phillies players joking? A Brawl? Because some players on the Mets feel they have the best team? Something that the Phillies themselves did last year?

Come one already with the “disrespect’ garbage. These professional ballplayers are like 12 years olds. I’ve never seen egos bruise so easily.

    • cgroovin says:

yeah, the phils really need to get over their little inferiority complex they have with us. their fans too. i mean, trying to buy tix to met games? dont they know our games actually sell out?

      • BillyGoat says:

        groovin,

in the words of wayne and garth, “we’re not worthy, we’re not worthy”….yeah, phils feel REAL inferior after last season..please…

dont kid yourself…there were about 10,000 empty seats in Shea for every game in September…

        • Roach2 says:

It took the 2nd worst (see: Phillies, 1964) collapse in HISTORY for your team to win the division…still by only 1 game….REMEMBER THAT

        • BillyGoat says:

fair enough….but your mets only needed to beat the phillies ONCE in its last 8 tries and theyd be playoff bound…ONCE…the Binghamton Mets could probably have stolen a game in there….

          remember that, ROach…

        • DjDeF says:

Don’t give this idiot the time of day. Just show him your watch and look at how he stares into space trying to figure out what time it is.

        • BillyGoat says:

          I got 2:12

        • The Milledge Idiot says:

          It’s 2:16, what’s he talking about?

        • Give the guy a break he is a lonely fan of the worst losing team in professional sports history,,, and the Phils have not won anything in forever…the sad thing is they won as many playoff games last year as the Devil Rays….lol…so let him keep yapping…in 6 months he will be cryin in the fetal position in his mommys basement.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

          Very true about BillyGoat Gruff.

Say what you will about “heart,” but at least the Mets have class. A bunch of knuckle-dragging yahoos want a “brawl” because Beltran jokingly said the EXACT SAME THING Rollins did last year? Very sportsmanlike. What a bunch of meth-fueled goons. The baseball universe will right itself, and the Phillies will find their level — somewhere b/w third and fifth in the division.

Anyway, it will be a lot of fun to see Ramon Castro break Utley’s jaw with his forehead. Oh, and Brett Myers? You have to hit this year, buddy, and I’m not talking about family photos. Get used to deafening whistling noises in your ear.

        • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

billygoat, thanks for reminding us all that the phils won the division last year, i keep forgetting that. Way to take advantage of a golden opportunity btw.

philadelphia does have an inferiority complex face it, i mean i probably would to if my city’s greatest athlete was a fictional character.

    • BigHangWithEm says:

Nothing like a trashy team relfecting their trashy city.

  6. Another Matt says:

Nice! Already under their skin before the Grapefruit League’s even started :D

Here’s hoping the Phils keep thinking about fighting rather than hitting…

  7. dave27 says:

Hopefully we’ll be more unified than the last Mets-Phillies brawl I can remember - the McDowell-Jefferies throw-down when 3/4 of the Mets were rooting for McDowell.

    Head butt? Is Baerga available?

  8. VCarver says:

I want to see Mr. Met go one on one with the phanatic. It will be a close match until Mr. Met pulls it out at the end with a humongous head butt to knock the phanatic out cold.

  9. CitizenSnips says:

This just seems like a rivalry for the sake of there being a rivalry. As much as I hate the Phillies’ cocky attitude for having the division gift wrapped for them (cause they sure as hell weren’t going to win it themselves), the reaction of some of the Mets’ players you just gotta shake your head at. While the Mets seem to be the instigators now I have a feeling a sweep or series win of the Phillies at CBP will make things turn unnecessarily ugly.

  10. lcs487 says:

The Phillies have once again shown us what a bunch of little whining babies that they are….the fact that Jimmy Rollins “won” the MVP last year by taking his team to the first round of the playoffs (big wow about the NL East championship) and choking in three games to the ROCKIES. I’m glad to see us stepping to the plate and showing that we’re not scared of these goons.

I like this because its like we’re forming our own version of the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry that’s at a fever pitch here in CT.

    • BillyGoat says:

ummm…please explain how they are whining babies………..

      • lcs487 says:

Read the story dude….it says it for me

        • BillyGoat says:

It doesn’t really say the Phillies are going to try and fight the Mets…you don’t know what was said or what was asked….obviously, the teams don’t like each other…so it’s inevitable to surmise that tempers might flare on both sides…

so again, not sure how that makes them whiny babies but im over it…

        • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

id say theyre whinny babies. beltran said the EXACT same thing rollins said last year, CLEARLY tongue and cheek and now whats the phillies reaction? lets fight them. bunch of low life scumbags just like every fan and person that live in philadelphia, but hey at least rocky ended the cold war so you guys have that going for you.

        • BillyGoat says:

          Todd,

again…..lets stick to the facts…please show me where Stark quotes a player…there is mutual respect and dislike on both sides….who knows what was said…you cant be stupid enough to think this is simply a reaction to what beltran said…youre kind of making up the story to fit your script…

Yup, Im a low life scum bag……im trash…i have no class…please…lets stick to baseball…why so angry Mr. Zeile???? i think i know why, but i wont ‘remind’ you again…and fyi, my comment at the top of this thread mentioned nothing about ‘the collapse’ until i was encouraged to do so

        • BKphan says:

Zeile gets so angry and it’s so funny. I love how Mets fans say Philly has an inferiority complex. Have you guys ever considered your relationship with the Yankees and the entire city of New York? Talk about an inferiority complex.

Also, lcs487, there is no story to read. It is an interview with Stark.

  11. foul bunt strikeout says:

I hate to say it guys but matched up against Philly in a brawl situation, I think we are bit outmatched.

Delgado vs Howard - old vs young…howard is stronger and a beast. Delgado does get points b/c he will use his notbeook as a weapon

    Major Edge - Phillies

Castillo vs Utley - again old vs young…howard has some pop and some speed. Castillo has speed but those knees worry me.

    Edge - Phillies

SS - Reyes i believe is physically larger than Rollins but looks too happy go lucky to be a good brawler. I mean he talked smack to Olivo last year and lucked out that Sandy Alomar took the punch.

    Draw

Wright vs Feliz - I am taking wright in this matchup over Feliz. Wright has some power and is pretty built. I don’t much about Feliz but i know he doesn’t drink vitamin water

    Edge - Mets

LF - Church vs Genkins/Werth -Church seems larger and younger than these two scrubs. Genkins is old as well.

    Edge Mets

Center Field - Beltran vs. Victorino - I take Victorino b/c Beltran is just way too fragile. If he moves the wrong way, he’ll hurt a muscle. I think Victorino has the edge in speed also.

    Edge - Phillies

Left Field - Alou vs Burrell - I know Burrell is a met killer and has some size but ALOU is strong as well plus he looks to have a mean streak. Plus Burrell is a tool

    Edge - Mets

I think our relievers would take theirs and in terms of starting pitching, I’d love to see Johan pimp slap Myers. Hamels could be scrappy (barfight three years ago wehn he broke his hand) but i see Oliver perez as the X factor here. He has a bit of a crazy eyes look and I think he is a powder keg…just my opinion.

Oh and wagner would outtalk any of their guys.

Plus Willie would Beat the snot out of “CHOLLY”

Mr Met vs Philly Phanatic - Phanatic has weight but Mr. Met has a better reach

    Edge - Mr. Met

    • Mets Fan on Wall St. says:

I think we’d have to watch for Pedro tossing aside Cholly.

    • The Milledge Idiot says:

I love how players HAVE to fight by position!

    • FBones24 says:

      Alou would piss on Burrell..literally…

    • Necciai27 says:

You forgot catchers and benches. While Carlos Ruiz may have an edge over Brian Schneider (though we don’t really know), I think Ramon Castro would be at a distinct advantage. Then there’s Marlon Anderson and Damion Easley as the two old school guys on our bench who I’ve A) seen in brawls before (Anderson last year, of course, and I’m also a diehard Tiger fan who remembers Easley from his days as an All-Star…that year or the next, he was in the middle of it after a young Jeff Weaver threw at Mike Sweeney of the Royals) and B) they got into the thick of it.

      • The Milledge Idiot says:

To win a brawl in the MLB, you have to have a lot of crappy guys fighting who don’t care about getting hurt because it doesn’t effect the team.

I have to say, the Phillies have a distinct advantage there…

    • KevinG says:

      you forgot catchers

      • QnsNative718 says:

Yea dont forget good ol Brett Meyers… Hes had alot of experience fighting… Well, dont know if slapping your wife around constitutes as experience…

  12. cyclone says:

Wow this is getting pretty nasty real fast if this is true…I LOVE IT! Nothing like a new rivalry to take the focus off the Yankee-Red Sox rivalry…don’t get me wrong, it is a great traditional rivalry spanning decades…but it is way overhyped…I am ready for something new…

  13. jcervone7 says:

Its amazing how the Braves could never inspire this much venom in all those years and it only took one with the Phils. Oh well, I can’t wait, we’ve needed a good rivalry for a long time.

It would be nice if the Mets had some bigger guys in case there is a brawl though. Delgado and Castro will really have to step up!

    • The Milledge Idiot says:

Eh–the Braves are pros (excluding Rocker) for the most part, the Phillies are trash.

I just can’t wait to see Brad Lidge somehow give up a clutch home run during a brawl…

    • Mets Fan on Wall St. says:

I think the late 90’s against the Braves was the height of the rivalry, especially after the Rocker interview. I hope we don’t dismiss the Braves rivalry now that we have a fanbase and a city that’s much closer in proximity.

I see your point though. For much the same reasons that we’ve never had a huge rivalry with the Phils, we weren’t really competing against the Braves for a playoff spot through the early and late part of the 14 year reign of terror.

    • krumbledkookie says:

Believe it or not, Braves fans have some class, unlike Phillies fans. That’s the big difference.

      • Mets Fan on Wall St. says:

It could also be due to the fact that the Braves are at best the 3rd biggest draw in Atlanta…college football, NASCAR and if the Falcons are any good then they’re 4th.

        • ScottN says:

Uh, not even close–you forgot GA Tech Football and, if you want to include Athens, Georgia Football. Both far larger draws than the Braves.
