pmBlogs: El Duque is a Walking Injury
By Matthew Cerrone - Feb 21, 2008 2:08 pm

At his blog for Newsday, David Lennon reports that Orlando Hernandez did not have a bunion removed as the Mets said he did.

Instead, “He had surgery to fix a dislocated second toe, which is now actually shorter, affecting his balance,” Lennon explains. “Because of that, Hernandez is lagging behind the other pitchers as he tries to adjust.”

so, basically, the guy is hurt so often, even his employer can’t keep track of what pains him…good grief

In a second post, Lennon recaps lunch plans between Joe Smith and Mike Pelfrey.

Meanwhile, according to Adam Rubin in the Daily News, Jose Reyes may not be doing the Professor Reyes segment for Shea Stadium this season.

“I did it two years in a row already,” Reyes tells Rubin. “But I’ll think about it.  I haven’t said no yet.”

In the report, Rubin also writes of Shea’s alternate plan, using John Maine instead; as well as the latest on Oliver Perez’s contract status; and talks, or the lack of talks, with Freddy Garcia.

Speaking of Rubin, at his blog for the Daily News, he has posted a great Q&A with Carlos Delgado.

In the New York Times, Ben Shpigel profiles Jose Valentin, who has had a big influence on Reyes.

Lastly, at MLB.com, Marty Noble takes a closer look at Brian Schneider, who looks forward to having ‘a hand in everything.’

Wait, John Maine doing “Learn Spanish with John Maine?” The Maine event can’t do this- he doesn’t even know how to speak spanish…

update- oops. But “Maine Street USA” doesn’t seem to appealing either…

How bout Carlos Beltran “Find the Mole” where he would be hiding under a pile of raisins or black olives and you have to pick which one is his infamous mole. “Moley Moley Moley…”

  2. Agbayanitodeepleftcenter says:

If I’m Mike Pelfrey and I’m hearing that Duque is having problems controlling where the ball is going, then my ass is going right to the coaches and I’m going to show them how hard that fastball is.

  3. Ceetar says:

Aww, he’s got to do Professor Reyes! That was funny..besides what did he say a couple dozen(certainly not 81) spanish words and some canned responses that they spliced together? Although the ones that were the funniest were the ones where he rags on David Wright’s poor pronunciation or something.

I understand they don’t want to go ‘over the top’ or whatever with all this stuff, but they need to remember they are entertainers, and they are responsible to us first, and we want to be entertained! (This includes handshakes!, screw Hanley Ramirez if it disturbs him)

  4. cchiavetta says:

Big Shocker, El Duque is hurting. The guy seriously must be fifty years old.

I can do without the Professor Reyes Segment

i do miss the Race to shea tho

  6. the clap says:

El Duque has to man up. A two-toed sloth wouldn’t have balance problems if one of its 2nd toe became shorter and now we have to hear that this old man is keeling over like a drunk on the mound?

    • mikey_FF says:

It’s always something with this guy. Thank God that we’re only depending on him to be the 5th starter this year. I wish Freddy Garcia would accept a minor league deal, but I guess he still wants 2 years guaranteed ML contract. Oh well.

    • Another Matt says:

The sloth has four legs. That helps.

Toes are actually very important for balance.

  7. pkay23 says:

Professor Reyes is awesome! All the little corks they do at the game is what makes being at the ball park more special than watching it on tv! Yes most of the stuff is corny but it’s not easy to please 50,000 people

  8. part09 says:

David Lennon looks just like Doogie Howser…

  9. Tapeball45 says:

Yeah.. although it’s really funny, the professor Reyes thing is getting a little old.

A lot of the in between inning things are getting old.

Granted I’m there to see some baseball…
but the Kiss Cam and Smile Cam have got to go.

If we’re going to be a “High Class” team it has to be on all fronts.

    • metsftw says:

um, every team does those things. what do you suggest?

      • gomets6091 says:

how about not doing those things? If every other team drove their bus off the cliff…

      • Tapeball45 says:

How about the David Wright “2nd inning, teach your girlfriend and children how to appreciate the amazing game of baseball”

or the “6th inning throw your washed out or bust mets player jerseys on to the field”

        anything other than
        Sing along with Neil Diamond..
        or
Can this kid hit a home run in a video game?

I’m even getting a little sick of “Lazy Mary” in after the 7th inning stretch.. Maybe now that Lo Duca is gone we wont have to be so stereotypically Italian.

    • pedro4545 says:

2 years ago I bought a custom made Mets t-shirt with “Professor Reyes” on the back. Come on Jose, one more year!

    Paging Freddy Garcia…paging Freddy Garcia…

…Freddy Garcia, please report to Port Saint Lucie immediately.

  11. tonylett says:

Just another reason you can’t depend on 40 y/o ballplayers
    see-the Rabbi in LF.
Always liked Duque but at this point after the last couple of
seasons ANYTHING you get from him is gravy.
No excuses this season, Pelphrey MUST step-up and make
the #5 spot his! Regardless, b/t Duque and Pedro we need
a quasi-6 man rotation. And no Freddy Garcia IS NOT an
answer to ANY of of questions.
Still say that for what Chacon got w/ the ’stros, he’d have been
    a nice pick-up.
ALso,off topic but RF STILL looks shaky.

  12. stickguy says:

Forget Maine, they need to do a session with Rick peterson. No one cares about learning a Spanish phrase, but the wisdom of the jacket, Wow!

  13. stickguy says:

At least they don’t really need Duque for the first few weeks. If he isn’t quite ready, send Pelf to AAA anyway (assuming that is the plan), put Hernandez on the DL, and go with an extra postioin guy to get Alou through the early cold weather. Night games in April can be tough on an old guy.

Then, when the need the 5th starter, hopefully El D. is set to go.

I really want Pelfrey to spend 1/2 year at AAA becoming dominant, so he can come up mid season when Duque goes out for the year, and cement his place in the rotation.

Pray that Armas can put it all together (think Sosa for those few magical starts!), since they are probably going to need him sooner, rather than later.

I don’t feel at all uncomfrotable having Pelfrey and Armas as the #6 and 7 starters. Although getting 150 innings out of Duque will be nice.

  14. I feel that havin Santana, Maine and Ollie plus throw in a “said to be” Healthier than ever Pedro ….that #5 is not a real big concern..I agree Duque is a gr8 #5 , but he WILL miss half his starts at least , so you can mix 16 - 18 starts for Pelfrey, Sosa, and possibly Armas or Vargas…Im ok with that….better than last year thats 4 damn sure,, LETS GO METS!!

  15. tonylett says:

Please at all costs KEEP JASON VARGAS AWAY FROM SHEA!
Tony Armas really is the wild-card. Always wondered way he
hasn’t been better.Overall though, the staff has got to give us
about a 1000 innings so the bullpens not blown out again.
This was the root of the problem last year.

  16. saxilla says:

I’ve about had it with these old guys and these injuries. If it hurts so much, retire. If not, take the ball every fifth day and shut up. Plus, don’t complain about a potential move to the bullpen if you don’t even know if you are healthy enough to take the ball as a starter. Too much is riding on this season for this stuff…

    • tonylett says:

Wait!, would you retire if someone was willing to throw
millions of $$$ at you to “work” half the year?
Come-on, think about it. Not to start hammering Don Omar
again but MAN, he loves him some 40 y/o latino ball —players.

  17. dougmientkiewicz says:

    MOSTLY TRIPLE A

“Lastly, at MLB.com, Marty Noble takes a closer look at Brian Schneider, who looks forward to having ‘a hand in everything.”

  18. Al Kykyoras says:

But…but…EL DUQUE IS A WORKHORSE. Not.

I like the guy when he pitches. That’s just the problem. He can’t pitch more than 150 innings.

I think a paper cut would sideline him indefinitely.

  19. BRD1970 says:

Sounds like typical bungling by the Mets medical staff.

  20. Constnza81V2.0 says:

Well whether by accident or design, this is why it’s good that El Duque is nothing more than a 5th starter at this point. When he pitches he’s the best 5th starter in the NL. When he’s out, it’s not like you’re losing your ace or #2 guy like we had to cope with last year.

  21. zen says:

nothing alou, a urinal, and some privacy can’t take care of…

i’d leave pelfrey in the minors to jump up and take over for el duque’s vacation. ideally there would also be another back-up as i’m worried about pedro over the long haul. maybe armas.
