News: Lidge Limps off the Field
By Matthew Cerrone - Feb 23, 2008 3:53 pm

According to the Associated Press, Phillies RHP Brad Lidge caught a spike in the mound on his first pitch of batting practice Saturday and hurt the same knee he had surgery on in October.

“Lidge limped off the field after talking with team trainers,” notes the report.

The team said it hoped to know more about the extent of the injury Sunday.

Damn, I don’t want any excuses from the Phillies.

I hope he’s OK so we can beat them as a full and healthy team.

  2. brgnsoccer says:

I hope he’s okay… i was sort of hoping for a good rivalry this year and lidge can be a BEAST at times

    • Bravesfan says:

But to bad the Mets never could be a rival for the Braves.

      • VCarver says:

Too bad the Braves can no longer be a rival for anyone right now.

A true 3-way rivalry would be nice instead of it just being Mets-Phillies.

  3. maure19 says:

i hope he’s done for the season

    • The Glider says:

Agreed. And while we’re on the subject, what can we do to kidnap Cole Hammels and Jimmy Rollins.

  4. thejuggernaut says:

they’ll just use this as an excuse.

  5. TheMaineMetsFan says:

I’d rather see rollins go down but lidge will do

    • haha, my thoughts exactly. i don’t feel too bad, because any phillies fan or member would be throwing a party if one of our guys got hurt.

lidge doesn’t really scare me too much. at least they didn’t go out and get mariano rivera or something lol

      • The Oracle says:

He scares me. I foresee him taking off one of our guy’s heads. Not because he is a badass, but because he has no control over his pitches.

  6. Number41 says:

    careful of the karma….

  7. jlazar2 says:

they better not use this as an excuse when we whoop their butts

  8. scottmetsfan says:

would you believe that here it is 3 hours after this happened and the phillies blogs STILL haven’t mentioned it?

  9. shea73 says:

My preference would be a fully healthy Mets team beat a fully healthy Fillies - anytime.

  10. You can’t sign someone like Lidge and use his injury as an excuse, just like we can’t complain if Alou goes down. That’s a calculated risk that they took, it’s no surprise.

  11. sincekindergarten says:

I, too, hope he’s alright, because I’d like to see the Mets beat a fully healthy Phillthies team, but I’ll take it if he’s not.

  12. metzelaar says:

Well, it’s to the Mets’ benefit if he doesn’t pitch for a majority of the season. That being said, the Phillies are classic excuse-makers, and you’d hate to give them any fodder.

  13. lordt78 says:

Damn!!!….who’s gonna serve up late inning homers to us now????

    • EastFallowfield says:

The most memorable late inning homers last year were served up by Billy Wagner, yes?

      • KinersKornerman says:

        EFF,
That was then, this is now.
        Enjoy the memories, bro

      • VCarver says:

I’m not celebrating anyone’s injury. But if this had happened to a Met you’d be on here celebrating with some other Philly fans. Stop being hypocritical.

As for dramatic late inning homers, no one’s given up as many dramatic and heart-breaking ones as Lidge in the postseason which appear to have scarred him for life.

        • EastFallowfield says:

We survived Wagner, we might be OK with Lidge.

        • VCarver says:

Wagner’s never choked it up as big as Lidge. And he at least is able to recover from the meltdowns all closers have from time to time. Lidge has never been the same since his postseason disasters.

  14. cousinrk says:

Not sure Eastfallow, how many homers did the Rockies hit in the 3 game exhibition they had against the Phils last October? Can you find that out for me? Thanks

    • EastFallowfield says:

Apparently some teams have trouble winning even before the playoffs?

Hey, congrats, you did manage some wins in Florida, otherwise you wouldn’t have had that last weekend of ‘hope’…

      • VCarver says:

Congrats, you know how to read a schedule and post the results! What does that prove? Sure, the Mets collapsed before the end of the season, but fact is the Phillies’ performance in the playoffs was as dismal and humiliating as it can get. If you can’t even win a single game in the playoffs, why bother? At least the Mets get a better draft pick out of the season.

        • EastFallowfield says:

Yeah, you’re right, no one mentions the Mets collapse at all. No one will remember that Mets collapse vs the dregs of the league. And I’ve got a really nice bridge in Brooklyn to sell ya.

        • VCarver says:

No one said the Mets’ collapse would never be mentioned again. Where did you get that idea from? The listing of the games was pretty pointless. I mean if it’s fun for you, go ahead.

The sad thing for Phillie fans is that no one will remember the Phillies even appeared in the 2007 postseason, their showing was that inconsequential and pointless. No postseason accomplishments. No memories to cherish.

  15. I guess BeerLeaguer.com didn’t like my little back and forth. I thought it was friendly. I actually went there to tell them I hoped Lidge was OK because I didn’t want to hear any excuses when they finished 20 games out and I got this message:

“We’re sorry, your comment has not been published because TypePad’s antispam filter has flagged it as potential comment spam. It has been held for review by the blog’s author.”

  16. Moses69 says:

Who cares really, DO you think they’ll be saying oh i hope el duque isn’t hurt so we beat them healthy. NO people getting hurt is part of the game and if he’s hurt good, thats an advantage we have now going into the season, if alou, el duque, ect gets hurt they’ll think the same, just part of the game.

  17. Moses69 says:

U guys make it sound Lidge will be the only guy to get hurt, i mean either way another philly will be get hurt and so will a met, lidge will not be alone, a lot of ppeople get hurt.

  18. D-Day says:

looks like the injury bug is already out and bitting

lets just hope the mets have their bug repelent!

  19. D-Day says:

its funny, as much as this mets phillies rivalry is primary on everyones minds, lets not forget the braves, i cant wait to see our lineup pound the crap out of glavine when we first face him!

  20. markthemets says:

with him without him no difference we’ll beat ‘em like a drum anyhow. what kind of injury did he have surgery for?

  21. kingkongkoo says:

I was looking forward to lidge blowing some big games for the phillies against us this season…

  22. MetalMet says:

It’s not even March yet. So he’s got some time to recover unless it’s somehow THAT serious.

Besides, don’t we want him in there giving up home runs in clutch situations :)

  23. Emillionaire says:

The people that are not happy about Lidge going down are utter idiots. Who gives a SH*T if we beat them if they r healthy or not. As far as im concerned its an advantage for us because one of their “big off season” acquisitions just went down.

Do you honostly think ppl in philly would feel sympathetic for us if we lost Alou?

  24. racemccloud says:

This could be a blessing in disguise for Phillies fans. Now maybe they won’t have to suffer through Brad Lidge “closing” games. That homer he gave up to Pujols a few years back in the playoffs STILL hasn’t landed.

    • EastFallowfield says:

Yeah, citing 2007 is “That was then, this is now”….

      • VCarver says:

Lidge was never the same after his multiple devastating postseason meltdowns. “Then” is “now” for Lidge.

        • EastFallowfield says:

Wagner hasn’t exactly torn up the playoffs either, 1-5, 8.71 ERA, and seems unable to get Pat Burrell out with the game or season on the line.

        • VCarver says:

Pat Burrell has done well against the Mets no matter who was pitching. It has nothing to do with Wagner.

The problem with Lidge is that he was never the same after his postseason disaster and that includes the regular season, lol.

  25. Beltran15 says:

I actually hope he is ok, he will do the Phillies more damage closing games then on the DL.
