News: Lidge To Have Surgery
By Regis Courtemanche - Feb 24, 2008 7:40 pm

The Associated Press is reporting that Phillies closer Brad Lidge will have arthroscopic surgery and be out 3-6 weeks.

Metsblog noted yesterday that Lidge had caught a spike in the mound during batting practice and hurt the same knee he had surgery on in October.

…i figured lidge would be decent if he could stay healthy, but so far no good…

This guy will be back for the Mets series in April, but he is very shaky. I dont think he’ll make the year whether its ineffictveness or just injury.

    • metschamp08 says:

      Who cares about this guy.

The phillies have no rotation, and they got lucky last year. They finished the season that we couldn’t. I don’t think Lidge makes a great difference. They still have Mesa, and Gordon who did fine last year.
Call me when Howard, or Rollins goes down. Thats a headline.

      • Slob says:

Mesa’s not on the team anymore. Their bullpen will likely include J.C. Romero, Tom Gordon, Ryan Madson, Clay Condrey, and Mike Zagurski

        • stickguy says:

the only people that pen should scare are the Philly fans!

Gonna be a lot of early appearances and blown games by their pen this year.

        • rockets212 says:

“Gonna be a lot of early appearances and blown games by their pen this year.”
Sounds like a pen from last year, and it was a pen that was supposed to be good last year, on paper it might suck but just
          PLAY THE GAMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • wallybackman says:

“arthroscopic” is only to look around and see what the problem is. Some problems may be fixed while the doctor is “in there” but it could reveal other tears- ACL injury, etc.

  2. thejuggernaut says:

    let the excuses begin….

  3. NoPepperGames says:

I also am of the opinion that Lidge is effectively done as a reliable closer.

  4. jlazar2 says:

BETTER NOT HEAR ANY EXCUSES FROM PHILLY FANS

  5. QnsNative718 says:

I think they knew what they were getting themselves into with Lidge… this should not have come as a surprise.

  6. metzelaar says:

Whose going to close now? Mesa?

  7. jimyager says:

I’m sick and tired of this Phillies thing. This is NOT the Yankees/Red Sox here. First off the Phillies are not the Yankees and second they suck. They did’nt win anything last year we gave it away. And only by one game, ONE GAME. I would not bet on the happening again. Just with the addition of Pedro for a full season and Santana and the subtraction of Mota we are a better team. Let the Phillies remember what that ONE day of being the NL east champions was like. That;s right ONE DAY , they never won another game after the regular season. To be a true Yankee/Red Sox thing the two teams have to fight it out year after year for first and second place and even the Wild Card and that;s NOT the case with the Phillies. Sorry Jimmy Rollins.

    • NoPepperGames says:

And I’m sick of fellow Mets fans saying the Mets GAVE the Phillies the division. The Phillies still had to win their games. But I guess it probably makes you feel better to say that. The Phillies won the division in 2007. Get over it.

      • metschamp08 says:

I love how there are Phillies fans on Mets Blog. Get a life. Your rotation sucks. Your Linup is Average at best, once Howard is out of the lineup. Your management is retard for even thinking about trading Pat Burrell. I wonder who is going to play first base for you guys next year when Howard leaves. Tony Clark? Cuz you know the Phillies aren’t going to offer him 20 mil. for next year. They cant afford it. The Mets won’t but look at least we got Santana. Ok you guys won the division but you got kicked out in the first round. You did nothing. We failed to win 1 game at the end of the year which pisses me off, but the Phillies didnt have a shot at the WS and niether do they this year. Hamels is the only starter on your team I would put on the Mets, and he would probably be our 5th starter next to Santana, Pedro, Maine, Perez. He beat Orlando who happens to be like 60 years old. By the way lets name your outfield? Victorino ok, Burrell who will probably be traded by the deadline. Great job Phills. Your also losing Howard next year because as much as he says he wants to be a Philly he much rather be paid.

        • NoPepperGames says:

So I guess you don’t know what “fellow Mets fans” means??

        • stickguy says:

that, and there is no chance the Phils trade Howard in his 2nd year of arbitration. There would be an uprising by the fans.

Although it would be a way to fill a bunch of other holes on the team, and probably make them better overall. But no way a new GM (which they will have after this year) has the brass ones to make that move!

        • metschamp08 says:

My point was Phillies does not have the money to keep Howard if he has a nothing season like his last two. Its not a matter of wanting to get rid of him. They might not be able to offer him what he wants without creating bigger holes on their team. Chase U., Rollins, Burrell, Victorino, and Hamels are all going to be looking to make so major bucks when their contracts expire within the next three years and Howard has the ability to get a huge 5-6 yr offere worth 110-130 mil.

This is the year for the Phillies to make a run, but they have no pitching. So I don’t like thier chances. It’s now or five years from now for them, as is the Mets because it is questionable if Pedro or Perez will be back for 09.

Howard is one of the best bat in baseball right now next to Big Papi. Or A-Rod from the beginning of last season when he went on that 13 homerun strike in April.

No doubt that the Phillies right now have a good team, but lets look at the long term. Burrell was almost traded at last years deadline, and I think there is a huge possibility he will be traded by this years deadline, and Howard has what maybe 2 years left with the Phills until they have to either let him go or trade him because everyone knows that the Phils don’t have the money to spend on players like the Mets, or Red Soxs.

Why are the Phillies signing Kris Benson. He is very questionable on whether he can pitch after being injuried all last season. Moyer is like 42, or 43 he is on his way out, and thank god the phillies have Hamel or they would be competing with the nats, and marlins for 3rd.

        • metschamp08 says:

One correction i meant another not a nothing in the 1st paragraph.

      • Ceetar says:

Listening to anything baseball related since October I’ve heard plenty about the Mets Collapse, but nothing about the Phillies so called run. What does that tell you?

The putrid performance against the Rockies just further solidifies that fact.

    • thejuggernaut says:

also, as i’m concerned i’d rather be the yankees then the sox.

i know the yanks haven’t won lately but god..if ya’ll had to spend two seconds in boston…it sucks! all they do is BITCH!

    • cgpublic says:

That’s right, the Phillies sucked so bad last year they beat us senseless for eight straight and won the division. In your opinion, what does that make the 2007 Mets? The better team?

      • LetsGetMetsmerized says:

Why does it bother people that one person believes the Mets gave it away. He is entitled to his opinion and being harsh in retaliation won’t change it I assume.

  8. b_flats says:

Hate it for Lidge, but I have no sympathy for the Sillies.

  9. bonatom says:

Good thing Mets brass didn’t listen to Billy Wagners request to get Lidge as a setup man

  10. METS08WSCHAMPS says:

Hey Phils, you can get Benitez on the cheap. Also they have alfonseca too. lol. 9 finger man.

    • The Glider says:

I thought he was the 11 finger guy. Isn’t that why they call him the Octopus?

      • Necciai27 says:

Actually, Alfonseca had 12 fingers. Six on each hand. The sixth on each hand was a really small nub with a fingernail.

        • EastFallowfield says:

My post didn’t make it last night.

I thought he had 10 1/2. However many, they’re not on the 2008 Phillies (yet).

  11. Big Lou says:

I agree, Philly never won ANYTHING as it took a historic collapse for them to get the championship and as the prior poster explained it was just for one day. I love to hear them talking like their such a tough team, but in reality they haven’t proved a darn thing, last year ,or in the playoffs. Keep talking Philly fans, even though i would have liked to have you guys buried as a full squad so that way you’ll have no excuses. HURRY BACK LIDGE!

    • biomarco5 says:

Lets not get ahead of ourselves. The Phils had a ton of injuries last year, and could have packed it in but they just kept coming after us. Sort of like rocky, no matter how many times we knocked em down they kept getting back up. This year is going to come down to who wants it more.

      Go Mets

      • stickguy says:

wanting is nice, but it will likely come down to who has the better team, especailly pitching, and which team stays healthier.

    • The Glider says:

C’mon man, I love the Mets and I, unfortunately, live in Philly (actually, Philly is a nice place to live), but they kicked our butts 7 times in a row! We just had to win one game - ONE GAME! -and we could not.

To the victor goes the spoils. They won. We lost. Time to put this to rest and move on to a great 2008.

And, BTW, if we are indeed that much better than them, let’s just go out and prove it.

  12. SuperGrover says:

The William Penn curse is working early this year for the Phillies…good!

  13. cousinrk says:

Let me get this straight Phillies fans are tired of hearing how the Mets gave the division to them, yet they have no problem touting the collapse. Which one is it? You can’t say you won it and then tell us how the Mets chocked. Yes both had to happen but the fact is, the Phils needed a monumental collapse from the Mets to win no matter how many games they won down the stretch, deal with it.

And with all that the Mets won the exact same amount of playoff games as the Phils. ZERO. One hit wonders are never remember kids, enjoy your one day division title.

    • KinersKornerman says:

Why do we keep re-living last year. Yes the Phils won, the Mets collapsed. That’s as relevant to this year as the Phils 1964 collapse. It’s 2008 and both teams are 0-0. Let’s talk about now.

Nobody has an edge from 2007.

      • I had an edge from 2007, but my doctor gave me some ointment and it went away. Must have been that Philly girl I was messing with.

      • stickguy says:

agree 100%. it is a new year, and last year is pretty much irrelevant. Except for the fact that the media will harp on it, and some fans are obsessed about it, or course!

  14. Homebrew22 says:

I don’t understand why everyone needs to see it in black or white? Did we choke last year? Sure. Did the Phillies legitamately win the division? Yes they did. We were up 7 with 17 to go. So if they Phillies didn’t win the games that they did, then we would have won the division, even while we choked. I’m not defending the Phillies, I grew up there and don’t care much for their fans, but you have to give credit where credit is due.

    • jamie says:

agree about the gray-ness of the conversation. It isn’t either/or, it’s both.

the team I’m most looking forward to facing at the moment is the marlins in five weeks!

  15. nymike712 says:

It’s almost embarrassing to be a Mets fan when there are some fools puffing their chests and claiming that the Mets “gave away” the division…..

The Phillies beat the Mets in EIGHT straight games last season and some of you are claiming that the Mets handed it over because they had to lose in order for Philly to take over first?

Well, a second place team can’t take over first by winning unless the first place team loses some games. That’s why teams play all 162 games. I guess no second place team can ever “win” a division, it’s always “given” to them.

I especially enjoyed the post about how the Phillies “haven’t proved a darn thing, last year ,or in the playoffs” … Oh really? They haven’t proven that they can battle back from deficits, win 8 straight games against the division leader and take the division title? What have the Mets proven? Is it ok for Mets fans to talk so “tough” when the team hasn’t proven anything?

Some of you need to grow up and get over yourself. The past is the past and it no longer matters because the Phillies blew it in the playoffs anyway.

  16. guierllNO MOta says:

exactly, we collapsed but give the Phills their due and shut up…mets in 06, phils in 07, mets to be in 08

braves still suck…and we “gave away” 14 years

  17. KinersKornerman says:

Seems like Bartolo Colon landed with the BoSox. No biggie there.

  18. metsin080910 says:

3-6 weeks leads us right up to Opening Day. No biggy for Philly fans, I think Lidge performing in CBP will be more of a problem for him.

    • The Glider says:

True. Plus, that combined with the impatience and cruelty of the Phillies’ fans could rattle Lidge if he gets off to a rocky start. Those Boo Birds will tear him apart.

    • stickguy says:

could work out nicely. Rush back after missing ST, not have his control down, and get lit up like a Xmas tree in his first couple of home games.

With any luck, it can turn the fans against him, and blow his confidence, all by the 2nd week of the season!

  19. cpai76 says:

to quote Nelson from The Simpsons

    “Ha Ha”

  20. Max32 says:

The Mets can win 100 games in ‘08. The odds may not be great, but they can. The Mets could have won 100 games in ‘07, but they didn’t. Johan Santana increases the odds of that happening every 5 days.

However, it is something to say that the Phils were officially in the post-season in ‘07, not the Mets.

Anyway, back on subject: I had a feeling Lidge might prosper a little more in new atmosphere, but this certainly puts a damper on that. Even if he does pitch by Opening Day it could still be bothering him. Lidge was a key component in a questionable bullpen and now the Phillies may start to sweat. That have to hope their rotation settles, especially those two at the top of the Depth chart, Hamels and Myers.

The Phils need offense this year. If even one player slumps or gets injured, that’s one more out per 2-3 innings that they cant’t afford, especially since one of their reliable batters set the new record for most strikeouts in a season.

And if Rollins doesn’t repeat and improve from last year, that might be the deal-braker.

To a healthy competition, and meaningful games in September.

    Let’s go Mets!

    • Another Matt says:

Don’t forget as well, with Pedro Feliz in their lineup, 7-8-9 is three automatic outs for them this year. Lifetime .288 OBP… BWAHAHA!

  21. The Glider says:

Time to go over to Beerleaguer.com and hear the teardrops as they fall tenderly to the ground.

  22. metballnut says:

Face it, Lidge was hurt BEFORE he pitched. You don’t hurt your knee on 1 pitch. He warmed up before he threw…this doesn’t smell right to me. Sounds like the GM is covering his arse.

Either way, the Phillies will need to address the bullpen. They got lucky with Romero last year…he will be this year’s Joe Smith.
    Flash Gordon is DONE.

  23. Number41 says:

We have a few health question marks ourselves.
Way too early to worry about the Girl Horses or the Braves.
Let’s start this mission on day one and never look back!
One piece missing; need that Donn Clendenon piece….
In case I didnt mention it lately,
    Retire # 17

  24. EastFallowfield says:

It’s more like 10 1/2. But he’s not actually on the team this year.

Phils used Gordon then Myers then Alfonseca and the proverbial committee last year so they may be used to this kind of challenge. Apparently, last year at least, they didn’t need perfect health to take the division.
