Health: Beltran Nicked on the Arm
By Matthew Cerrone - Feb 25, 2008 8:18 am

Carlos Beltran was then hit accidentally on the left tricep by a fastball from Johan Santana.

Beltran told reporters he is fine, though the pitch left behind stitch marks and a black-and-blue.

Later on, Willie Randolph talked to reporters and explained that beltran wanted to face Santana specifically, because he knew Santana would throw strikes.

…so close to irony…so close…but still just a coincidence

Randolph only categorized the hit-by-pitch as a ‘nick.’

seriously, it’s like beltran is just a magnet for pain

In the Star-Ledger, Dan Graziano talked with Beltran about his goal for this season.

Beltran, on winning an MVP…

“That’s a goal for every player that plays at this level, and it’s definitely a goal of mine.  I work every single year to be the MVP.  Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to win one yet.  But I try every year.”

beltran is sneaking in…so far, i am most excited to watch Duaner Sanchez and Ryan Church this season…but, little by little, i’m becoming more and more intrigued by beltran, who seems poised to turn a page in his career…he has never been my favorite player…i like him…just  not a favorite…and i’m not sure why…his relationship with the fans has always been sort of distant…and just as we get to rallying around him, he tends to get hurt and disappears for the next few weeks…i hope this changes…

…as for the MVP, he’s such a subtle player…so much of what he does well, he does quietly…he’s not going to bombard the voters with a fat stat line, so i wonder if he’ll ever win an MVP – even if he ends up truly being the best player in the league…for the same reason, i wonder if he’ll ever be viewed as the best player on the Mets, even if he ends up being so…

    Beltran is 83% OK.

    • According to Yahoo

“Beltran asked manager Willie Randolph to avoid matching him up in batting practice against a hard throwing rookie who might overthrow in trying to make an impression”

Oh and he sat out yesterdays running drills because his legs are sore…..

Maybe Johan was just trying to toughen Beltran up a bit by throwing at him

I hope Beltran changes his entrance song to the “Mr. Softee Theme” from when the ice-cream man comes around your neighborhood

I loved the comment about him wearing a jersey with a # that equaled his % of health.

…and I think it is time we start to completely ignore that articles from Impacto Deportivo, last week they said Colon had an agreement with the White Sox, MLB has him agreeing with the Red Sox.

so will beltran take himself out, and maybe go on the DL…until he is 100%? LOL

So does this mean Hitters play rock ,paper scissor to see who has to go hit batting practice gaianst Oliver Perez?

Beltran seems like a different guy. He’s gonna have a HUGE year … call it a hunch. While I’ve always liked him, he’s never been one of my favorites. I think he’s gonna shut a lot of his haters up this year though.

Trust me I hope you are right however he may be putting too much pressure on himself with his public comments which may make him press and then suck. Again I sure hope not.

I know what you’re saying … but I just get this feel that he’s in a different place in his mind. Well, I hope I’m right too!!

I think Beltran feels healthy this Spring as opposed to past three Springs, and when he reflects on what he has done the last 2 seasons, averaging a .275 BA, 37 HR, and 114 RBI, he probably expects to duplicate or improve those numbers (maybe BA). If he wins the Gold Glove, Silver Slugger and bats .300 while hitting 35-40 HR and 115-120 RBI while the Mets win the NL East, he has to believe he will be in the mix for the NL MVP. Again, I think he sees what he has done with a niggling knee injuries for the last two seasons, and expects more now that he has had his knees scoped. Or, maybe he’s on HGH (just kidding).

im looking for a 40+ hr year from beltran…suppossedly hes added more arm muscle or something…and i saw a pic of him and he looks huge…i read all of this in the article on mets.com ab him getting hit by the pitch from santana…the pic is also there…he def looks bigger in it but maybe its just the camera…but enough with that…i think beltran really wants to gain everyones respect this year and stop being a very quiet player…seems like he’s expecting a big year, so why shouldn’t i expect him to have one as well.

  8. CTdiehard says:

totally agree matt, i feel the same way

  9. whynot says:

He was the real MVP in 2006. If he doesn’t sit most of the last month because of his bruised knee, his raw numbers would have been better and he would’ve gotten the award. The fact they gave the award who can’t play defense or run the bases tells you how worthless the award can sometimes be.

  10. MDMetfan says:

Beltran is a very good player. He is consistent. He plays very good defense. He has had bad wheels for a couple of years. As a person with bad knees who tries to stay active, I wonder if his leg issues arose from compensating for his knees. Maybe this year he is healthy, fully adjusted to his team and quietly pissed about how last year ended. He is one of the best players in baseball and I am very happy he is on my team. Don’t forget he played with a broken face after his crash with Cameron. That alone makes me dismiss “toughness” issues with him.
