This is the logo for Citi Field, unveiled by the Mets this morning from Port St. Lucie:
Jeff Wilpon, as quoted in the team’s press release…
“With the unveiling of the Citi Field logo,
and the construction of our new home, we are one step closer to bringing the dream of a new home for Mets fans to reality. This marks the start to the official countdown to our April 2009 opening of Citi Field.”
According to eyewitnesses, Omar Minaya, Willie Randolph, Carlos Beltran, Billy Wagner, David Wright, Jose Reyes and Johan Santana wore the logo on a hat while at the unveiling this morning.
…i guess this is supposed to bug me, but it doesn’t…i understand the nexus of money and baseball…i just hope to never see corporate logos on the actual team hat and uniform…that’s all…otherwise, i realize it is what it is and i, as a fan, really have no say over how the team makes money…i just want them to look good while doing whatever it is they need to do…oh, and win too…that’s pretty important, as well…
…that said, it’s a solid logo…i don’t quite get the angle, and it feels more like a logo for a special bank account than it feels like a logo for the stadium…then again, maybe that’s the point…
…Update…10:10 am…
At his blog for the Star-Ledger, Jeremy Cothran
has a picture of the hat people were wearing.
…a reader in the comment’s section wrote that the logo looks a lot like the Domino’s Pizza logo, and he’s right…which is not a good thing, if you ask me…
…by the way, to win a hat, go to cothran’s blog, as well as Steve Popper’s blog for the Bergen Record…

and the construction of our new home, we are one step closer to bringing the dream of a new home for Mets fans to reality. This marks the start to the official countdown to our April 2009 opening of Citi Field.”

eh, whatyagonnado…
Comparing the Shea Stadium commemorative logo to this one one could see how crappy a job the Citi/Mets marketing did with this one. I think they drew it up after attending a “start of season” party and waking up in the morning with a hangover…. Jeez…you would figure there would be some relevance to the Mets…or baseballl…or a stadium….instead they just took the regular logo and stuck it in a box….looks like it’s directing me to the orange section of the citibank parking lot….
I think this is all Citi in terms of creation of this logo. I don’t think the Mets had much say, since the bank is paying for the naming rights with all that money. That’s why it’s bland. Citi probably demanded that the “Citi” logo be the prominent thing and that nothing else distract from it. I guess there is nothing you can do about it when you’re getting 20 mil a year from a bank.
I understand completely what you’re saying, but I think there should be a “NY” or a baseball / bat / helmet / mr.met somewhere in there….SOMETHING that associates this logo with NY and baseball…ANYTHING….i mean, realistically, for all i know this could be the logo to any park, any where….
I’m with you 100%. On the previous post I was commenting on how much I don’t like it … mostly because I’m a graphic designer, and I hate when creativity get tied up and held hostage.
I does look extremely simple and yet some marketing firm probably got richer for it…
It does at least have a diamond shape… thats from baseball right?
or geometry…
if i wanted to look at corporate logos all the time i would watch nascar, the ultimate commercial.
I think if they put another Orange rectangle along the “3rd baseline” that said “Mets” it would be a little better….kinda like two dugouts along the diamond….
You can’t be serious. This logo sucks. I know Citi paid 20 mil or whatever, but do you think that they could at least put a Mets logo, Mets colors or SOMETHING Mets on it? Why don’t they just change the team name to the Citibank Mets. Has the Rollerball prophecy of corporations taking over everything finally come true? Will we soon be singing the Citi Bank corporate anthem at the beginning of games? (For those of you who don’t understand, rent Rollerball and watch it. I mean the older James Caan version, not that piece of crap that came out a few years ago.)
Thats kinda weak… they should have given a few choices and asked fans which one they liked best before making a decision
It almost looks like its a (field level) ticket, with the way the colors are laid out…That may be the logic behind the logo? It seems to me as “effecitively simple”
you mean fans of Citibank? They’re the ones who came up with the logo.
what the hell, thats the best they could come up with? I could throw that together in less than a minute in Illustrator.
It’s a temporary stadium name and logo anyway.
Citigroup (among other former stalwart financials) is the latest imploding Enron fiasco, and at the rate they’re selling mammoth chunks of themselves to Abu Dhabi and Singapore, we should be getting a new name change in a couple years. How about The OPEC Sovereign Nation of Abu Dhabi’s American Field for Baseball and Public Stoning? Kinda catchy.
LOL - Wow… I just hope we dont end up with some crappy company that just makes the stadium name awkward like Jobing.com Arena (NHL’s Pheonix Coyotes)
I thought it was a 20 year deal…
Here comes the complaints that it is bush league and wha wha wha.
We’re Met fans its what we do
The exact term I would use is, “effortless”…
I’m getting dizzy just looking at it.
Off-topic: I’m planning on going down to Port St. Lucie in a few weeks to see a few ST games. What’s a good hotel to stay at down there? What’s the nearest airport? Thanks.
pretty sure west palm beach airport, its ab 45 mins to an hour away and theres a hotel like a minute away from the stadium but i forget which one…if you do a search on like hotels.com or something, sometimes they tell you how far away the hotel is from the main attractions in the area…and believe me the stadium is the only main attraction in port st. lucie…its awesome being able to go to the games and see the players up close but the night life is minimal.
I am going March 8th thru the 11th. I am flying in to West Palm Beach Airport which is about 50 minutes from Port St. Lucie. My father lives in Hobe Sound which is halfway between the airport and the game. I was looking at hotels too because I am bringing the fiance who wants to lay out while me and pops are at the game. Found Pine Villas at Perfect Drive in St. Lucie. Nice hotel with terrace for each room, fridge, 2 double beds, etc. Rates on Expedia start at 126.00 per night. Little pricy but not too bad. My father sent me Florida newspaper articles to show me how in demand Met spring training tickets are. Everyone is so pumped up for this year. Game I am going to against Red Sox I have front row behind home plate which we can get 400 a piece if we sell. Cant wait!
On another note, my father said the fans are going so crazy to see F-Mart hit that they had to hide him under a hood and escort him to private batting practice. Mets are being very careful with F-Mart. Paper there says he is second behind Santana as far as who fans want to see and get close to. Very Interesting. Hope his play matches all the hype.
I will be there the same weekend as you, 7th-10th. I had to get the Red Sox tix off stubhub because I couldn’t get them from mets.com. Can you believe that?
And yeah … West Palm Beach, PBI is the airport … for the original poster asking the question. Hotels are getting very booked by now so hurry up!
What did you pay for the Sox game? Where are you sitting? Will be great game but the prices for an exhibition game is ridiculous! Only good thing is where I am sitting (front row behind home plate) I can shake hands and get autographs from players from both teams. Players are so fan friendly at spring training. Talked to Wright for 10 minutes 2 years ago. He was interested in what its like to be a firefighter for the FDNY. Its a great memory. He signed a magazine and 2 balls for me. Great down to earth guy. Now my favorite Met of all time.
I got them pretty cheap … mostly because I bought bleachers. The field level seats were going for like 100 a ticket which is absurd. I paid 15 a ticket for bleachers … works for me.
Yeah man I went last year and met Wright in the bowling alley … He signed a ball for me and took a picture with me and my girlfriend. Then he got mobbed soon after once word got out, but he signed for everyone in between bowling frames. He’s a really good guy.
I also ran into a bunch of them that same night in the connecting restaurant, Alou, Valentin, Sosa, Feliciano …
I can’t wait to get down there again, should be lots of fun.
Oh and Johan is slotted to pitch that Red Sox game … which should be cool!
Didnt know that! Seeing Johan will be sick! Will have great view of his windup and that signature change-up. Cant wait!
My parents live in PSL, so i fly down there a lot, PBI (Palm Beach International) is the closest major airport. But if you are renting a car, you can find chaper flights if you dont mind driving a bit, Ft Lauderdale, Miami and Orlando are all within 2ish hours drive of PSL, I usually fly into Ft Lauderdale, as it can save over $200 on the flight, unless you get a great deal flying into PBI.
As for Hotels, There are plenty of Chain hotels, and they are all pretty much the same.
i’m a graphic designer… and I’m totally offended by this logo
yup, the funny thing is, this probably went through months and months of revisions at a top ad agency and ended up costing a fortune. Just like those new hideous NYC taxi logos.
Sad but true!
I’m also a designer and while it’s not an unexpected result given today’s strict corporate branding guidelines, it’s pretty bad. I expected something simple, safe and “fast” but that tilt is just arbitrary and clumsy. If the intent was to achieve a baseball diamond shape then it would have made sense to incorporate the word “field” in a lockup within that shape. Instead, what you end up with is something that vaguely resembles a hang tag on a Starter jacket. It’s a good example of how branding standards should always be combined with little bit of common sense.
This could give Verizon a run for its money for the “Worst Logo of All Time” award
The font for FIELD is based on how Ebbits Field was written on the stadium. Thought I would throw that out there if nobody caught that.
it’s actually just the Citi typface in all caps…
Looks like the Dominos Pizza logo vomited…
very weak …
I’m ok with the sponsorship, just not ok with the CITI logo. Lets not forget, stadium sponsorship is not a new concept (Wrigley Field). However, when CITI gets bought out by another company in two years time, does the name change as well? Which is why I think that the name should be called, “Citi Field at Shea Stadium”. Keeps something the same. I’m not sure I could bring myself to say, “The Mets play at Goldman Sachs Field.”
That’s pretty funny…I don’t think Citi is getting bought out by anyone though…it’s the largest bank in the country (or second largest - behind Chase)…if anything, they’re buying other guys out….
actually, its the largest bank in the world. they are going through some tough times though, so you never know.
The point of the angle is to make the blue square a diamond shape…as in “baseball diamond.”
which is totally ruined by slapping Field on the baseball diamond. Now it looks like a metrocard.
Here another “off-topic”……..another “Wagner-ism”
Billy, as quoted in today’s Daily News regarding John Maine….
“He can win 20,” Billy Wagner says flatly. “Heck, he could have won 20 last year if the bullpen had helped a little more and he didn’t let an inning get away from him here and there. Johnny just needs to believe he’s that good, that he can be as good as guys like (Tom) Glavine, (Greg) Maddux and (John) Smoltz, because we’ve all seen how he can go out and dominate.”
Now, is it just me, or could he have maybe named someone OTHER THAN 3 BRAVES ??? I just don’t get it…..if you’re going to talk up some pitchers, how about some of your OWN !!?? I mean, we do have AT LEAST 2 other well established starters here he could have referenced.
Thoughts ?
Totally agree. Why compare him to those THREE. In addition, those three are all hall of famers and I think John Maine has a long way to go before he can be “as good as guys like Glavine, Maddux and Smoltz.”
On another note, am I the only one who actually likes the logo? I think it’s simple, clean and does the job a logo should do.
I dont mind it at all. Could be ALOT worse. And as brought up here I dont think we have Santana right now without the 20 mil. from Citi. Wilpons dont have Steinbrenner money so in order to compete for the best players we need to get revenue from some place. Logo really isnt that bad and if the jerseys have a small patch for the first year its not a really big deal.
Do we know what context this is in? There were those who were comparing this rotation to that of the Braves when they were dominant?
Maybe
Martinez is Maddux
Glavine is Johan
Maine is Smoltz
Avery is Perez?
I am reaching but there have been a few people out there making that comment.
Not to mention Maine’s game in no way resembles that of Maddox of Glavine. Billy just doesnt put much thought behind his statements. Great way to put some completely unecessary pressure on Maine as well. Poor job all around there Wags…
i literally put my face in my hands when i read that
I strongly prefer “he’s as good as the best anyone can throw against us” to “he’s as good as his own teammates.”
I don’t like it.
I don’t HATE it.
But I don’t like it.
(Meh, back to work)
for $20 Mill a year, I could careless if it was called Pampers Park!!
I don’t have a problem with it because it’s unobtrusive and looks like just an extension of the Mets’ branding. Better something simple that’s hardly noticeable than something garish that clashes with all the rest of the Mets’ branding.
they need to throw some black in the logo just to piss off the purists more…
ha!
For $20,000,000.000 a year, I love it. I wonder if we would have pursued Johan without that $ ?
bkdrew, lol!
This logo is horrible and I really hope it doesn’t end up on the uniforms.
they are making the inaugural patches as we speak, set to debut in 2009. Below the logo will be the tagline, “Join our Thank You Rewards Program”….
I doubt it. Like cyclone said, there will more than likely be an inaugrual season logo on the right sleeve of the jerseys.
This particular logo is what you’ll see slapped all over beer cups and pretzel napkins.
I think this is more like something you would see under the Section Seating signs….I could be wrong…
I have a horrible urge to play dominos right now…
It remind me of the Enron logo. :)
Still bugs me…no millions will ever change the name of Yankmee Stadium, even a brand new one.
So much for talking Mets without bringing up the Yankees…
So much for comments with substance.
Yeah, because there is so much substance in hearing another fan with an inferiority complex whine about why can’t we follow the example of the almighty Yankees…
Someone’s a little sensitive here, but it’s not me.
Can you talk politics without bringing up Bush?
Can you talk football without bringing up the Patriots?
You’re masking your hurt feelings, being all tough…
Get over it.
it’s like the mets fan’s version of godwin’s law
Incorrect analogy, I was not trying to be inflammatory, I’ll leave that to the people who over react to the mention of the-team-who-must-not-be-named…
Thyey aren’t changing the name but they are asking $20 million to slap a corporate logo all over the OUTSIDE & inside of the stadium.
So there will be a huge sign/logo of some company on every helicopter/blimp shot of the stadium.
It is as bad, if not worse than a corporate name for the stadium.
Who cares what the logo looks like….why aren’t more people up in arms about the lack of 10,000 seats in the new “stadium”?? They should be calling it Citi-Arena.
I mean 45,000 with standing room?? Are you kidding me? Thats gonna make ticket prices more like MSG than Shea…im sickened by this, it just spits in the face of all the upper deck regulars that cant afford the more expensive seats. When you look at that new “Stadium” you can see that they simply cut off the upper deck, its a JOKE.
I thought that was the whole point when this thing was made…that it not be a “stadium”…but a ballpark….
Sorry but I am not crying to lose the nosebleed sections that I see virtually empty all the time when I watch the games on TV…
Exactly. As long as several tickets are available between $20-30, I really don’t have a problem with the lessened capacity.
Yes, I am far more bothered by the sea of empty seats that you see at Shea on a routine midweek game than by the lower capacity / more intimate feel at Citi field. More games will be sellouts and more April games in craptastic weather will look and feel like there’s actually a few people at the game.
Seats will always be available via StubHub, scalpers, brokers, ebay, mets ticket marketplace and the like.
I’d say as corporate names go, we kind of lucked out with a simple one like Citi Field, it could have been much worse (I’m looking at you Petco Park).
The Petco Park logo looks 10 times better. It actually looks like it has something to do with baseball….not to mention the Pad’s “SD” on the bottom…I don’t see anything on the Citi logo that associates with Mets or baseball….
So would you rather the Mets home be in Petco Park or Citi Field based on name. That is the point of the post. Not a logo.
Again I have said this time and time again, most Met fans simply love to complain about anything and this is one of those times. Are you guys ever happy. This is nonsense complaining about a freaking logo. This is right up there with complaining about not getting the bobble head because they only give them to the kids or the loud music. Stop complaining about nonsense that has nothing to do with the actual baseball team.
Djdef has been on the money lately with his posts.
yeah it’s not a strong logo at all. It’s like they either thought of it within the first 5 minutes then took the rest of the time off, or thought of it minutes before it was unveiled
I think the angle obviously is to make a baseball diamond, and the lil blue part makes it look like a credit card, which of course we’ll be OVERcharging with the new baseball prices
ANd/or a metro card like someone said, to symbolize the “city”
Actually, this logo blows, let’s be honest. the only logo i care about is where the new johan K corner will be..
WOW what unimaginative design. I just think it’s hilarious that they probably threw a ton of cash at some graphic designers to come up with a Domino’s Pizza ripoff.
Maybe the Noid will join Mr. Met as the team’s 2nd mascot.
LOL, bravo! The Noid…there’s some memories
As a graphic designer, I am ashamed. Im positive it cost a fortune. lame attempt of merging a atm card with a baseball daimond.
The angle is reminiscent of the Enron Logo.
You may not miss the seats now but wait until you wont be able to buy any tickets for the next 5 years because the place is sold out every game like the Garden. And forget about playoffs….guys like me that dont belong to a corporation will never get any tickets…as it is we have to sign up for a raffle, and even that is hard to win with over 55,000 seats…just wait till playoffs 09, the place will be packed, packed with suits - DWright says he loves how Shea “shakes” and it helps pump him up…i wonder how much Citi-Arena will shake when its stuffed with stuffed suits sipping perrier and golf-clapping - A JOKE!!
Guess were gonna have to wait til they suck again.
Well, to be fair, I was at the Garden last night for the Rangers game and it was a pretty fun atmosphere.
It’s not really fair to jump to the conclusion that business people are stuffed shirts who don’t get excited at sporting events.
Rangers rock! It’s hard to compare the garden to Shea because it’s smaller and closed and it’s easier to shake. I was watching the game on tv - it didn’t look sold out at all…
One mitigating factor is the opening of the new Yankee Stadium the same year. That’s gonna be the REAL hot ticket in this town, unless the Yanks totally tank for some reason (which, as much as all of us would like to see it, is doubtful).
That’s gonna be where you see the stuffed shirts, glitterati, and other assorted d-bags who like to be seen at “events” but don’t necessarily like baseball.
Citifield will still be a hot ticket, but I honestly believe those seats will be filled mostly with true Mets fans.
Wow thats the best they can do? The Mets need to hire a new advertising agency or something because their logos and a lot of their products are poorly done. On the bright side, however, the team looks great this year and that’s all that really counts.
Im sure the ad agency came up with some better logos, but at the end the suits chose the safe, craptastic one.
Plus, if you read the article on mets.com…it was Citi and their ad team that came up with the logo…not the Mets. Apparently, the naming rights deal includes right to design the logo.
Hey guys…
…it’s just a logo.
Hey KW, they’re just opinions…
Yes they are opinion but the fact that nearly 100 probably more then that now comments have been wasted on complaining about a logo
To me, that there can be a 100-post thread about a logo with all sorts of mini-discussions in between is what makes this site great.
I fail to see the harm. The only people it affects are the morally superior that pop up in each thread to tell us what we should and shouldn’t be upset about or discuss, etc.
I dont care how excited the business-types get at the games….im selfish and I want to be at the games too! I went to the playoffs in 06 for the first time - it was insane, those upper deck box seats literally sway under the feet of all the intense fans….you can forget that atmosphere in the new place…it’ll be more “intimate”…..who cares about intimacy?? I want to hear the ROAR of the crowd, and to the guy who said, “as long as there are seats for $20-$30 available ill be happy”…unless someone knows something I dont, i would SHOCKED if there are any seats available for less than $50, we are talking supply and demand here people, 10,000 less seats = less supply = more demand = higher prices. Citi-Arena is going to suck.
Fans create the atmosphere and intensity. Citizens Bank Park has 43,500 seats, and place was rocking at the end of last season (compared to a comatose Shea, I might add).
I understand your concerns about capacity, ticket prices, etc., I just don’t share in them.
Yes, but high prices = high demand also means = the team / franchise is good and financially healthy. These are *good* things!
And, while I am fairly sure they are keeping seating at well under $50per in the Citi nosebleeds (which aren’t even nosebleed they are so close to the action)…you’re telling me you won’t shell out the equivalent of like 10 Starbucks lattes to see the Mets? 50 bucks is pocket change these days!
I am stuck on the West Coast, so I can only catch the Mets during West Coast or AZ trips and when I am in NY visiting family/friends. Since I only get to see them in person a few times a year, I try to get great seats (within 5-10 rows of the field, usually behind the Mets dugout) by going on StubHub. When one pays hundreds per seat like I do….$50 seems very reasonable!
Finally, it also just looks and feels so much better to see a nearly full house on craptastic home games against bad teams in April than to see whole swaths of empty red and green seats like at Shea. Sadly, those swaths of empty seats were at Shea last year in May and June also!
Do you lose some “loudness” for the playoff games? Maybe - but keep in mind the crappy seats at Citi will be closer than the upper deck in Shea…as will all the seats at Citi…in a more enclosed environment…..I think it may be louder than in the horseshoe bowl at Shea where the seats are so far back from the field and pointing out toward the parking lot.
Plus, do you have any doubt that the fans in the new RF Upper Deck porch area will fail to have that deck rockin?
As a branding consultant by profession, the logo has pluses and minuses. On the plus side, the juxtaposition of the citi logo within the blue diamond is a nice touch. We’re fortunate that the citi logo is modern and aesthetically pleasing. On the minus side, the orange box and angled ‘field’ text is a bit awkward and somewhat difficult to read. I would have preferred an orange banner or text block partially superimposed over the diamond so that the overall design would impart a more integrated look and feel as opposed to the present disjointed appendage. I’m sure there were multiple renditions with a similar approach that were not chosen for one reason or another, although I’m not identifying any good ones at the moment.
All that without saying whether you like it or not….I propose a fan contest to take this logo and improve on it….
I agree with toogr82b4got10.
Fans should have been given design choices to vote on. A no-brainer on getting fans involved. If they had done that, this horrible logo would not have made the cut.
My firm designs logos for a living and we give clients lots of viable choices. If one of my designers showed me this I would have asked … “What else do you have?” It has no balance, very little “Mets” feel to it, and no sense of baseball traditon. Now, this logo issue pales in comparision to other business decisions like ponying up for a Johan S, but this was a huge miss in my book, especially when logo and iconographic design in major league sports is at such a high level these days.
they shoulda let me design the logo. i would’ve done it for free.
I think the real issue with this is the fact that Citi’s $20m annual fee includes making their own decision on the logo - so the Mets don’t have a choice to get the fans involved - and Citibank for whatever reasons they had - didn’t want to do it. I don’t really have a problem with them not involving the fans…i just think that they could have tried a bit harder to make it less finance and more baseball looking…
Thanks, my point exactly!
I am pretty sure citi is the one who made the final decision. It is their naming rights so they are the ones who have to choose how their name is displayed around the ball park. This has less to do with the Mets then everyone thinks.
CarolinaMetFan.
The logo was designed by Citigroup….not the Mets. Read the article on Mets.com.
it could be a lot worse than “citi field.” i don’t like the corporate sell out since shea was based on an important person, but other than the yanks this is the way of the future. as long as the big money goes getting players that’s fine. we’ll know next year since santana only covers lost salary and upcoming free agents on the roster (perez, pedro, delgado).
I was really looking forward to seeing what this would look like. Sadly, it looks like something a child would create on his first day of Photoshop 101. Very disappointing. Hopefully, they will hire a professional with some baseball savvy to create a new one once they receive what I feel will be a negative interpretation by the fans.
Nice logo. The way they stick field onto citi is very graceful. The similarities to Domino’s are great to have. People who love baseball, like pizza, love banks and sideways fonts.
That is grotesque. There is nothing that is traditionally baseball about that. It is tough enough to swallow that the stadium is going to be named after a corperation, now I have to look at that logo? Come on! They should have designed something classic looking, like the Wrigley field sign, especially if they are trying to make this new stadium look like Ebets (sp?)
I think this is one of the greatest disgraces in the Mets history. This logo looks like a credit card or something. How could we turn the logo for our new park (which I think is stupid anyway because I wish they fixed Shea) into an advertisement for a bank. Naming it Citi Field was supposed to make the “naming” a bit subtle. I have just looked at the “logos” for other new ballparks, for example Minute Maid Field, Coors Field, ATT Park - there doesn’t seem to be some big corporate logo on there, from what I could tell - maybe I’m wrong. This stinks! Look, I’m very happy that the Mets got Santana and that we are getting ready for exhibition games and I also realize that selling the naming rights helped finance getting Santana, but it wasn’t necessary, since the team is generating tons of money. It is just greed and the Mets have taken baseball and the world further down the slippery slope. I hate to say it, but even the Br*ves have had more class than this crap.
I agree that the Mets’ ownership is greedy which is why I am so confused by the decision to build Citi-Arena with 10,000 less seats than Shea. It just doesnt make sense….believe me, when Playoffs 09 begin you will all understand what i am saying, we wont be able to get seats unless we know someone or work for a major corp like Citi or AmEx. New stadiums sell out no matter how bad the team is (see the new Nats stadium this year) so the decision to build a bandbox instead of a Stadium is mind-blowing to me.
Seriously, man…. people aren’t more ticked off about it because it doesn’t affect everyone the same way. It doesn’t mean that people don’t understand you - and rewording the same post 10 times in this thread won’t change anything.
I guess I was hoping that this blog was read by people in my income bracket. Apparently not. Clearly Citi-Arena wont affect everyone the same way, thats what im upset about…the rich will find this quaint, intimate setting quite nice i am sure. But the rest of us who wont be able to secure tickets unless we shell out dough on stubhub are getting screwed.
I am not just being a hater for the sake of hating…honestly im not. I would LOVE to be proven wrong, in fact i am hoping i AM proven wrong…but until that day happens I am also hoping to inspire people to speak out against the BS that has taken place in designing a “stadium” in new york city that only holds 45,000 people!!!!!
WAH!!!!!
Look up the following logos in Google images:
PNC Park
Citizens Bank Park
AT&T Park
Petco Park
Safeco Field
Chase Field
Minute Maid Park
All these logos either:
have team logos (CBP, Petco, Safeco)
mention the team (Chase)
look baseball-esque (PNC, AT&T, Minute Maid)
Not Citifield…none of the above! I don’t think the blue diamond screams “baseball”, nor the blue & orange coloring.
I don’t mind the corporate naming but they could have come up with a logo that includes baseball or the Mets somehow.
Looks like a handicap parking sign if you ask me. A $140 million budget and a 10 cent logo for there new billion dollar stadium. Yep, sounds like our Mets.
I don’t care what the Citi Field logo looks like so long as their $20 million check doesn’t bounce. As long as it doesn’t make it on to our uniform. That 40th anniversary Shea patch was nothing memorable either.
I actually think it looks OK. Simple and clean. How many stadium logos have the team’s logo on them? And really, who cares. Citi is a much better name for a stadium then the million of other options out there.
I just love the number of people who are offended because they are graphic designers. That just makes me laugh.
It would have been niceif they could incorporate some text like ‘The New Home of the New York Metropolitans’
I’m not a graphic designer, though I play one on TV. Seriously, I work with many graphic designers in an art department at a university. The piece does indeed look like a hang-tag you’d find on clothing. I wonder why they didn’t simply put the citi logo and “field” on one line, and play with the diamond shape around/through that. It’s to bad that this is what they’re hanging their logo on.
I knew the cartoonist–Ray Gotto–who created the Mets original skyline/bridge logo. He got $500 for it back in 1961, and it still looks great. Somewhere around here I’ve got one of the original photocopies of the logo handed out to the press.
Damn it Jim, I’m a doctor not a graphic designer.
Maybe they should have added a white lined diamond with the bases at each corner just inside the blue diamond. The Citi logo still in the middle but with the Mets intertwined NY underneath it in white. Would still be as simple, show its revelence to baseball, and show it’s team identity.
they should just use the writing on the outside of the stadium as the logo…. if you look at the picture on the frontpage of the mets website today you can see it
You’re right, Kevin, that one is better. Well, at least that’s encouraging. Though seeing it in three successive spots from that view is a bit much, I just keep repeating to myself “that’s the signature on Santana’s check.” The article was written by someone who presumably has never been to Shea since construction started, as it lists Citi Field being built “across the street.”
Y’know, I’m thinking that they can do something very clever with the Citi logo on rain outs. That umbrella could come in handy, if the Citi corp folks would allow it.
They should have made it logo with a vortex of dollars going into a black hole.
guaranteed to blow a 7 game lead in 17 days or your money back
So why does a stadium NEED a logo anyhow?
Shea never had a logo.
I came up with these 2 in about 10 minutes. Let me know what you think:

I frankly don’t care what the logo looks like, but gun-to-my-head-opinion: It’s quite awful.
