As noted earlier, according to Jerry Crasnick at ESPN.com, the Red Sox have signed Bartolo Colon to a minor-league deal.
During an appearance on ESPN News a few moments ago, ESPN.com’s Buster Olney said…
“He kind of fell in to (Boston’s) lap. He actually was close to a deal with the Mets in early January, then the Mets to a close look at his arm and called off that deal.”
…added to by Peter Wade, who provided the above quote…
…since it only took a minor league deal to secure colon, i do wish omar would have taken a chance on him…having colon pitching and getting into shape would make me feel better than having no real back-up plan in case pelfrey is not ready or Orlando Hernandez is not healthy…plus with three minor league pitchers gone in the santana deal, there’s plenty of room…

It’s looking more and more like El Duque is going to be injured more than he is healthy. Sign Lohse to a 1 year deal. He’ll take anything right now.
I would rather give Pelfrey a chance than sign Lohse. Lohse is awful.
Maybe, but what happens if Pelfrey doesn’t perform up to expecations again? Then we get to look at Tony Armas every fifth day. Lohse brings a nice piece of insurance, at least. Particuarly if we can get him on a Minor League Deal, although we’d probably have to guarantee him a spot.
id take lohse at 1 year, hes a typical 5th starter, which is all he’d have to be for us. maybe if we give him a 1 year deal and a chance to up his stock for FA next year boras will take it easy on us with oliver perez, unlikely but a guy can dream.
If Loshe would come in on a 2 year 10 million dollar deal I would do it. We need his protection this year and next year. If he stinks then oh well he becomes the long man or we trade him at the deadline.
The Mets are not the Yankees. If they signed Lohse to 2 years 10 million, believe me he would be a starter for those 2 years. they will not pull a Kei Igawa with this guy and let him disappear into the night. He is not a good pitcher at all. Yes he can eat some innings but I would stay away. He is simply not that good.
At this point if Pelfrey is still not ready and Elduque gets injured, who pitches?
Loshe might benefit from Shea. If not, what are we paying Elduque to pitch or not to pitch? Mota was not signed for much more than that. Are you saying that the Mets would be the Yankee’s if they cut their losses on 5 million?
Mota was signed for not much less than that, sorry.
To me, it’s not if Pelfrey is ready for the Majors yet or not (his strong September showed that), it’s about how consistent he can keep it. From what we’ve been hearing during spring training, it’s not unrealistic to have some optimism in Pelfrey (as hard as that may be for a Mets fan).
I remember someone else stating this the other day, but I was at that September game against the Braves as well where he put up 7 K’s, and he looked like a possible ace in the making. (No tongue in cheek.)
I definitely still like Pelfrey’s chances, I just think we should temper our expectations, he definitely still needs work. As of now, I’d prefer El Duque in the 5th spot, as long as he’s healthy. The thing with Pelfrey down the stretch was, he had that great game mixed in with a few other good ones, but he also had a couple of clunkers. Now, if you’re Oliver Perez, and you have a clunker after 4 straight great starts, its ok, but Pelfrey hasn’t gotten there yet. I think he’s capable of being a #5 man, sure, but I think he should expect more of himself and down the road, we should as well. With all the talk of his secondary stuff, all he has to do is get back to controlling that fastball, that’s all he needs. When he does that, he looks like a very good pitcher, with or without good secondary stuff.
My point is that Lohse could come here, improve because of Shea and still be bad. I am not into giving guys a spot on the major league roster when their lifetime era’s are over 5.
we need depth people, like pelfrey or not we need depth, armas, vargas, bostic aren’t the answers. we missed the boat big time with colon, losche is a smart sign.
Not really realistic, eh?
The Mets really could use someone from the minors to step it up and have a breakout year, to the extent that he could seriously be considered for a rotation spot in 2009.
And I mean beyond Pelfrey, who needs to settly into his spot by the end of this year.
Without knowing which FA wil lbe back (assume Duque gone, and 1 of Pedro and Ollie, probably Ollie) they will certainly have some rotation spots open, and man, would a rookie be a nice thing to have to plug in.
I assume the other spot will be a FA of some kind, probably of the 2nd tier group (the Lohse’s of the world).
Now, if Pedro and Ollie both come back, and Pelf gets established, then not a problem!
From your mouth to God’s ears! If we sign Pedro again it means he had a good, healthy year, and if we sign Perez then we are set. I believe Pelfrey will be more than good enough to be our fifth starter. I would have liked Colon considering he won the Cy Young only 2 years ago but Omar really must have not liked what he saw with his medical reports. Oh well. I trust Omar will provide very good starters next year for our rotation one way or the other.
Obviously if we resign Pedro and Perez we are in good shape. But even then it depends on Pelfrey to prove his worth and if not then we will have to go out and get a Loshe type for the #5 even then. That’s IF Pedro and Perez sign. Hoping for Pedro to return to form and resign, Perez to resign and Pelfrey to do well all at the same time is foolish. Sign Loshe as a backup.
Pelfry is not the question in the Loshe discussion, it’s El Duque.
Loshe provides backup and answers for next year. I’m not crazy about him either but Armas Jr? Hell, just bring back Lawrence… NOT!
Loshe will benefit from Shea, The Jacket and great DEFENSE.
Do it, two years at 5 mil per.
I have to agree. Again, Loshe will be needed at some point this year and may have to pitch next year if for some reason we lost all 3 of our FA and Pelfrey sucked? If it does not work out some one will take him at 5 million for one season.
We also still have Vargas down there…
LIMA TIME!
I am disappointed but not heart broken. Colon would have been a nice addition to the team but it was not important. If we failed to get Santana then we really needed Colon and hoped that we could pull a Perez on him. I would have liked to see him compete with El Duque for the fifth spot. The only problem is lets see comes Aug. where El Duque is. If he is healthy and pitching well alright. I would presonally like to see Pelfry in the 5th role and El Duque in the pen, but we saw what happened last year.
We are in a win now mode. We need to have a solid team, and it is not time to be developing young prospects on our major league team. Pelfry in the pen ok, but I dont want to see a less than average Armas Jr. in our rotation, just like last years Park and Lawrence.
But the Mets have a very solid 1-4 in the rotation, can’t they afford to allow Pelfrey to come into his own in the 5th spot? He was making great progress by the end of last season, and IMO he should be ready to step up.
I think alot of us liked Colon but apparently someone within the Mets medical department was doing their job.
I am very confident about Pelfry. The problem is will Duque even make to opening day? Yikes
Did they fire the old medical department and hire new people for this season? ;P
Mets are built to win this year. Why jeopardize that by not having an insurance plan. Sign Lohse for 2 years 8-10 million. El Duque might not even pitch 100 innings. Does everyone forget what happened last year? Do you really care if Lohse takes Matt Wise’s roster spot
My problem with that is, like other dreck the Mets signed in other years, they will commit to using that dreck BEFORE giving the young talent a chance. And we’ll be stuck seeing him out there stink it up whether he’s shown he deserves to be out there or not. That’s my fear with guys like Lohse. Maybe Pelfrey wouldn’t perform and it would be nice to have a fallback plan but:
Would Lohse agree to be the insurance plan backup of a rookie? Would the Mets actually give Pelfrey a chance before handing the job to Lohse first?
Ding! That’s what I’m thinkin’ too…
yeah, i remember El Duque pitching 150 innings, the problem was we had to rely on him, this year with Santana to consistently rely on and a healthy Pedro, we don’t need to rely on El Duque so much, so him taking his breaks during the year won’t be such a big deal. I still think he’s the best option at #5 because when healthy, he provides the most quality innings. Also, with Pelfrey in the wings, we have a viable back up.
No, I don’t care. You are correct. Insurance
Thank the lord they did not get this guy
ok guys, can we agree that Vargas is not a good option for the 5th spot in the rotation (if el duque is hurt).
He was mediocre in his first start (team won b/c of scoring alot of runs) and in colorado he was throwing beachballs! I know its a small sample size but nevertheless its not looking too good.
Hope that El Duque is healthy enough and if not Pelfrey will fill in.
I know he started 0-7 but he showed promise towards the end of the season and from what I have read, he has been working hard all off season (don’t know what Vargas has been
