Pedro said in a recent interview that he wants to stay on the Mets, and there's no real reason for him to leave, and if he did have to leave, he would find it hard to start over, find a new team. He seemed pretty sincere, so I think as long as we are fair with him, he'll sign up for another 2 years. He said he wanted to retire a Met.

Sabathia is still unsigned as far as I know (and I think Sheets is going to be FA after this season).

I've heard rumblings on this site that Pedro (should he stay healthy) would like to pitch another couple of years. The problem is, if Pedro does stay healthy and has a lights out year where he wins, 15-18 games, he's going to cost the team and there will certainly be competition for his services.

As of now you have Santana, Maine, Pelfrey. I agree that getting Garcia now makes a lot of sense.

Between El Duque, Pelfrey, Sosa, Armas Jr., Vargas, etc., I think we're OK at #5, or at least much better than we have been in years.

I'd be happy if we signed Freddy Garcia to a two-year deal, just to have him around "in case" for the second half of this year, but also as a (hopefully) solid contributor in '09.

Should 3/5 of our rotation walk after this year, what FA pitchers will be available---anyone know? And will we have the resources to pursue top-tier starters, or will we have to court Livan Hernandez again?

What about Freddie Garcia? He seems like a good fit, he won't be ready until late in the season and there doesn't seem to be a lot of interest in him around the league at the moment. You can get by with Duque, Pelfrey, Vargas, Armas in the #5 spot until he's healthy. If there's no need for him, let him recover more in the minors and have him as an option for 2009.

Doesn't Tony Armas, Jr give the Mets a #6 type pitcher already? Why would we need Colon?

In fairness, I believe Vargas was hurt last season. A few years ago, I really liked this kid when he pitched for the Marlins. I agree, he's behind Pelfrey, El Duque and probably Armas, but I'm not going to count him out just yet.

I would go with Pelfry. My main concern is saving the money for next year when we are clearly going to need to dip into the FA market. Pelfry would be our number 5 starter, we do not HAVE to sign Lohse.

See? It's not just the moves Omar makes - it's also the moves he doesn't make.

what are we missing? Nothing, Colon was apparently out of shape and his shoulder is still f'ed, he was throwing in the mid-80's in winter ball and he wasn't having much success doing it. Why waste our time? The Bosox have the resources to take a chance, so what? He won't amount to anything, he's an incredible long shot to do anything this year. The Red Sox just seem more willing to throw away money. I have no problem with that.
