Update: Duaner Sanchez looking Good
By Matthew Cerrone - Feb 25, 2008 12:50 pm

…the word from Tradition Field is that Duaner Sanchez looked quite good, though a bit erratic, while pitching in today’s intrasquad game…he threw 26 pitches in one full inning, and though he walked the bases loaded at one point, and allowed a hit to Ramon Castro, he struck out Fernando Martinez, he looked healthy, and did not injure himself…which is really the real point here

i’m happy for duaner, who must be relieved to finally throw his first full inning of live baseball since late summer 2006…

For periodic updates from the game, keep an eye on Adam Rubin and his blog for the Daily News, as well as Mike Rose, who is pinch hitting for David Lennon at Newsday.

Update1 pm

According to a text message from SNY’s Kevin Burkhardt, Sanchez looked ‘pretty good,’ and his change-up was real sharp.

After his session, Sanchez told reporters that felt good.

Adam Rubin at the daily news is doing the best play-by-play, far as i can tell. This is nice to see:

12:42 P.M.: The rout is on for the Alomars. Jose Reyes belted a two-run triple off the right-center wall off Joe Smith, scoring Ruben Gotay and Robinson Cancel. Cancel reached on a hit by pitch.

Well, at least nice for Jose, not so much for Joe!

I wonder if the new citi field configuration of that diamond impacted that triple…

      • rockets212 says:

i think their playin on the main field, the citi field dimentions are on a back field

        • DjDeF says:

They are playing on field 7 which has the citi field dimensions

From the Newsday Blog about Reyes Triple

Sorry I had to cut short our regularly-scheduled programming. Once Duaner Sanchez finished up, I had to leave in the intrasquad game and head for the clubhouse. What I can tell you is that Jose Reyes came within two feet of hitting the first home run in Citi Field history. Actually the high wall in center robbed Reyes of a homer. At Shea, it would have been gone.

        • tfc3rid says:

          Interesting ‘high wall’ in CF…

How strong can you look walking the bases loaded? Obviously he’s got more rust on him then Britney Spears’ Grammy Award.. but eek…

    • mikey_FF says:

Eh … I wouldn’t worry about that. His first time in a game situation in nearly 2 years. Yeah I’m sure he’s rusty, but he’ll shake that off quick. The fact that hes throwing hard and he’s healthy is the most important thing.

    • rockets212 says:

all you look for in the first live inning he pitched in more than a year is velocity, and confidence, if hes erratic in 2 weeks than you can get worried

      • One Day This Team Will Kill Me says:

He didn’t walk the bases loaded, he gave up two hits and a walk to load the bases

    • Another Matt says:

It’s still early in spring training, that’s how.

It’s not a question of whether there’s 100% control yet, it’s how good the stuff looks.

Im going to fridays and sat games at 1pm..what time is batting practice? or how early do i have to go there to talk to players or get autographs..thanks

    • mikey_FF says:

They have an open practice at 10 am, if I remember correctly.

      • mikey_FF says:

        Or maybe 9 am … damn I can’t remember!

        • mikey_FF says:

OK I just checked … 9 am they open the practice fields for the fans. Get there at that time, you’ll see the crowd of people waiting to get in the gate.

    • DjDeF says:

I was there last year. Best time to get autographs is 7am. Get to the field and wait for the players to show up. They usually stop and sign autographs in the morning. When I went to the fields I didn’t really get any of the big name players just the minor leaguers and the likes of Damion Easley and Show.

      • mikey_FF says:

Good tip. They are not ticked off at that hour of the morning, for the most part?

        • DjDeF says:

From what I gathered no. The days I went were away games so most of the bigger guys didn’t have to travel so they got in early to get their daily workouts and practice in and then they bounced. They were probably happier because they could hit the golf course and do whatever they wanted to.

Another tip is earlier in Spring Training the guys are generally a lot looser so they will acknowledge the fans more. They also go out a little more. There is some complex called SuperPlay USA or something like that and the players are known to go there early on.

        • mikey_FF says:

          Thanks … good info!

Yeah I know about SuperPlay … I met Wright on the bowling lanes there last year. Just bowling with his buddies like he was some nobody. Really great guy.

  4. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

way off topic but has anyone heard anything about Piazza? is he even close to signing anywhere or if he going to hang them up?

    • Philnym31 says:

MLB Trade Rumors is saying that the Rays are considering Piazza as a DH option. Interestingly enough, they are also taking a look at Bonds and Lofton too supposedly.

      • tfc3rid says:

That would be nice for Tampa and provide some veteran leadership for a very young team…

        • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

thanks, ugh as a fan of mike piazza id rather him just retire than play for teams like the A’s and rays. but hey if he still loves the game i guess its his right to play as long as he wants.

  5. ExileInLA says:

All Jerry Manuel needs is Rick Anderson pitching, and he sets the record for most Andersons in a lineup…

  6. followmelevi says:

The newsday link doesn’t work (it’s the same link as the dailynews link).

  7. NYMetz6986 says:

12:36 P.M.: Duaner Sanchez is through the inning, his first since July ‘06. He got Michel Abreu on a fielder’s choice, struck out Fernando Martinez looking, and after a walk loaded the bases, he got minor leaguer Brahaim Maldonado on a grounder to end a 26-pitch effort.

12:27 P.M.: Duaner Sanchez took the mound for the top of the second. Ramon Castro greeted him with a bloop single to center. Brian Schneider then grounded a single to center. None out.
…he didn’t walk the bases loaded…he allowed a walk to load the bases.

  8. WrightOn says:

Please nobody concern yourself with whether he gives up hits or walks. The man’s healthy, feels good, and can throw a baseball. To me, that’s excellent news.
