In a report for the Star-Ledger, Jeremy Cothran spends time with Brian Schneider, who is establishing a rapport with the Mets pitching staff.

At his blog for Newsday, David Lennon writes that ‘The Bank,’ so far, leads a quick unofficial tally of nicknames for Citi Field.

Meanwhile, in a post to Amazin Avenue, Eric Simon takes a look at what to expect from Carlos Delgado in 2008.

At Mets Today, Joe wonders if Wally Backman could, or should, ever be considered a replacement for Willie Randolph.

Loge 13 continues its look at the final days of Shea, while Russlan Abouhassan at Mets Geek continues his look at the team’s current 40–man roster.

NYFS has posted some great notes, video and images from yesterday’s intrasquad game.

Lastly, Tom S sent in a photo gallery from yesterday’s game, as well, which you can check out by clicking here.

“The Bank????”

Ugh. Stupid sounding, very fan un-friendly name. All it does is re-emphasize the “corporatizing” of baseball even further. Not to mention that it sounds like it should be the nickname for Citizen’s Bank ballpark, which as well all know, is the home to you know who.

Did anyone at least think of the obvious nickname of “The Citi???

it is the nickname of CBP. I’m just going to call it “Lets go see the Mets.”

Yeah “The Bank” or “The ATM” is pretty weak, I want no affiliation with the Phillies or there ballpark.

We’ve got more then enough time to come up with something, hopefully it’s better then that wack Citi-Field Logo some clown came up with.

I refuse to call it “The Bank”. That IS weak. I’m just going to say I’m going to Mets City. Maybe that’s weak too … but it’s a hell of a lot better than “The Bank”.

I’ll probably be calling it “Shea” for the first three years, anyway. I’ve only just stopped saying “Expos.”

C’mon… Lets have some fun with it…. When Santana starts in Citifield, headlines will be “Money in the Bank”

As for Wally Backman as future Mets Manager, I would love it… I like fiery managers with an edge like Billy, Valentine, and Leyland… A

I love willie as a person but not as a manager. More than anyone else, he is the most responsible for last seasons collapse. Once in a while you have to show more of a pulse and light a fire under your team.
I would love to see Wally.

I would be surprised if Wally Backman were ever to be considered for a position anywhere in the Mets’ system, given the organizations’ preference for squeaky-clean role model types with stable personalities.

He’d have to do the full Marv Albert, grovel and abase himself, and work his way back into good graces at a very low level.

Give me Wally Backman or Bobby Valentine of Randolph any day of the week. I’d take their styles over Willie’s “laid back I don’t care it’s going to get better” style any day. But, for one of those guys to be here means the Mets are stinking up the joint so I guess if I want the Mets to be doing well, we’re stuck with Willie.

I have the same issues with Willie’s in-game managing as the rest of his detractors, but don’t think for a minute that he’s laid back and he doesn’t care just because he doesn’t act out for the benefit of the media and fans.

Remember, Joe Torre was considered a hopeless incompetant, dumped by two organizations, before he became a genius. If the Mets become a team that can rival the accomplishments of those Yankee teams, it will be because of Randolph’s style, not despite it.

We could call it the “Chop Shop” in homage to all the respectable automobile businesses across the street but the Braves already have that one too.

I don’t get why people don’t like the name Citi Field and why we need a friggin nickname for it. I’m normally not a fan of corporate named stadiums, but it’s not like the Mets are playing in Coca-Cola Field at Subway’s Fresh Turkey Sub Stadium or something like that. If Citi Field was spelled City Field, would anyone have any problems at all with the name? The Mets play in “The City” and I have no problem with the name of the stadium at least sounding like it’s named for that. Calling it “The Bank” makes it sound SO corporate, when the name itself doesn’t really sound corporate at all.

Plus, here we are getting all nostalgic for Shea Stadium, when I’d bet half the people on here have no idea why it’s named Shea. Shea Stadium is named after a lawyer, Ebbets Field was named after an architect, and the Polo Grounds were named after a sport that was never actually played there…so what’s the problem with naming the new one after a bank?

Also, that one website has like 150 pictures of yesterday’s game, but the guy couldn’t take 1 picture of the outfield fence, to give us an idea what the dimensions look like and the nooks and crannies, etc.?

“but it’s not like the Mets are playing in Coca-Cola Field at Subway’s Fresh Turkey Sub Stadium or something like that”

Not yet.

Remember that corporate sponsorships change often. That’s why I hate when a team’s identity tied to something that is likely to change down the road.

I like Gotham Citi, it has a ring and a dark side to it but it would be tough to shorten. Batman would love it though.

I just called Citi bank and told them I filled the paper work for the rights to “The Metropolis at Citi Field”. I got a recording……

If three quarters of your article is defending the awful perceived reputation of a potential managerial candidate then it’s unlikely that he will ever be viewed as a good choice by upper level management. As for passion the Mets could use some but not in the way of a hot head the likes of Lou Piniella barking at every disagreeable call. We got rid of Paul Lo Duca for a reason.

They should nickname the new park “The vault” (ala bank vault) then the announcers can say something cheesy like “The Mets lock up another win in the vault”
