In a post to his blog for the Star-Ledger, Jeremy Cothran recaps this
morning’s bullpen sessions by Pedro Martinez and Orlando Hernandez, who, according to Cothran, is throwing at ‘Wiffle Ball speed.’
Speaking of pitchers, according to the Associated Press, Scott Kazmir missed a scheduled intrasquad game today after feeling discomfort in his elbow on his final warmup pitch.
Lastly, at A Citizen’s Blog, a Phillies blog, Mike explains why the Mets are not the team to beat.

“Do you really feel comfortable, Mets fans, with Willie Randolph handing the ball to John Maine on the last game of the season?”
If he pitched the same way he did the second to last game of the season, hell yes. This guy’s arguments don’t really seem to have any merit. And who is he to talk about pitching? Is anyone on the Phillies reliable passed Hamels?
Thats why we like you Matt. Your opinions are arguments make sense.
I agree 110 percent, hamels and maybe myers are good pitchers but after that your talking about a team that probably has 3 number 5 starters and a leaky pen. There line up is terrific but so is the mets. Its gonna be fun beating on the phillies this year.
I do wonder why Maine’s August and September aren’t discussed much here. Even with the awesome start on the next to the last day of the Mets season, his ERAs in those months were 6.32 and 5.93, with a 3-5 won/loss.
Is that the real Maine or we supposed to excuse those months for some reason?
so wait, you’re taking 2 months over the entire rest of the season? Why would you say 2 months is the “real” Maine, when that’s on the smaller side of the sample size? Overly pessimistic are we? Either way, if you watched the games, everyone saw Maine was tired, he had never thrown that many innings before.
I guess he started getting tired in May then, as his ERA that month was almost as bad as Aug/Sept, 4.50.
2 months is a pretty fair chunk of a season. I’m not saying it’s the real him, but you could see how someone not so Metscentric could look at those months and not see the same level of greatness seen through Mets’ point of view.
I love how these Philly analysts look at Santana as only having an impact on the days he pitches. There’s more to it than that. His presence pushes everyone back a slot, and thus eliminates the the garbage #5 spot we had to deal with last year (Lawrence, Park, Humber, etc). His impact will be felt twice every five days, not just once.
A Citizen’s Blog … that’s a comedy blog, right?? I can’t stop laughing at what I just read!! BWAAhaahahahaaaaa
It was like being at a phillies game reading citizens blog, there were met fans everywhere. Show some love phillies fans your blogs and your team can use it.
I think from reading those ‘comments’ that Metsblog officially has now lost any credibility saying that fans of teams other than the Mets shouldn’t post here.
Funny, I don’t recall Matt ever saying such a thing.
In fact, Metsblo gdoes a feature before almost every series where it gets the input from a major blogger for the opposing team.
Nah, it’s just the commenters here who get mad every once in a while, acting as if their fanbase is troll-free.
Any fan of any team in any city can post anything they want. Thats what these blogs are all about. No one ever said only met fans can blog here. Its all in fun but some people seem to take it to heart. Lighten up.
Ok, I’ll quote you the next time one of your brethren gets the vapors over having outsiders here.
Those people are idiots.
I like how he said that Santana replacing Glavine, although an upgrade, won’t really make an impact. Does this guy actually watch baseball??
Not even that, he doesn’t even have his facts right. Pedro replaced Glavine. Santana is replacing the #5 starter. Or vice versa, but the point is they forget that Pedro pitched only 28 innings last year..
I didn’t know they had computers and internet in Philadelphia..let alone a blog website!
Nicely done Philly..way to get out of the dark ages, if only your fans would follow suit. If only.
this coming from the guy who, per his handle, still rocks tighty whities……
I resent that - Hanes makes a variety of products, ranging from Boxer briefs to “tighty whities”.
My guess is that you wear the latter. No worries..so does my 85 year old grandpa..and he pee’s his pants like miles davis.
Ha. I’ll give you that.
Please Matt… no more about Kazmir… especially if it’s not something solid and tested…
Maybe Rick Peterson Nostradamus-ed that one? Is it the first of many?
All the comments on there from Mets fans are hysterical!!
This comment from a Braves fan on that Phillies blog is pretty funny…
“I am a Braves fan, and what do the Phillies think they have any buisness in this convo? Last year was a fluke the NL East is Braves vs. Mets …..the Phillies are just a urinal for us to piss on, get back in your toilets Phillies fans!”

I almost cried from laughter when I saw that…
that was great, probably the few things mets and braves fans can agree on
I expect Phillies fans to downplay the Santana acquisition. What are they supposed to say, “We’re doomed!”? If the guy truly wants to believe Santana will not have a big impact, let him.
But you guys above are correct: Santana and Pedro are collectively replacing the increasingly non-effective Glavine and the crap-tacular #5 spot.
I think all you need to know about Santana’s impact is this: from 2003-07 (when Santana was a full-time starter), the Twins were at or near the bottom of nearly every offensive category in the American League. Not just middle of the road, or below average. At or near the bottom.
And yet, they were still a perpetual contender and won multiple division titles. He was not the only reason for that (you have to credit guys like Joe Nathan, certainly), but he was far and away the biggest reason.
The best part about that blog is that 90% of the responses are probably from people from Metsblog. I love it.
Ha! Kazmir is hurting. Somewhere Jim Duquette is laughing while Victor Zambrano prepares to pitch the greatest year of his career.
Man it sure is great not having the name of Scott Kazmir not even sting anymore. We got our lefty ace, and he’s the best in baseball.
Eh i dunno about it not stinging anymore..imagine if we had him too?
then again..we argueably wouldnt have beltran, delgado, pedro, alou, maine, perez, church, castillo, and our entire bench..cause maybe if duquette doesn’t make that trade, he doesn’t get fired..?
Who knows. But the sting is lessened by the aquisition of Johan, but..still..we let Kazmir slip through our grasp..that will never stop hurting.
omg, your username. hahahaha
You gotta check out that blog from the phillie fan (A Citizens Blog) just bec every comment is Met fans beating up on the shmuck that wrote that ridiculous blog!! ARE WE PUMPED FOR BASEBALL OR WHAT?!?!?!
