postGame: Univ. of Michigan 4 Mets 4
By Matthew Cerrone - Feb 26, 2008 2:56 pm

The Mets and the University of Michigan tied today by the score of 4 to 4 in St. Lucie this afternoon.

  • Jason Vargas and Aaron Heilman each allowed one run, while Ryan Cullen allowed two runs on three hits.
  • Billy Wagner, Nate Field, Ricardo Rincon, Nelson Figueroa and Eddie Kunz each pitched a scoreless inning.
  • Brady Clark was hitless in four at-bats.
  • David Wright hit a two-run home run.
  • Michel Abreu hit a game-tying, two-run home run in the botton of the ninth inning to make the game a push, since no other pitchers were scheduled to throw today.
  • The home run was initially ruled a double.  However, after Willie Randolph argued the call, in a practice game, it was reversed and the tie was agreed upon.

how perfect for Fred Wilponneither his alma mater nor his own team lost…amazing

There has been a lot of talk of guys like Ruben Gotay, Brady Clark, and Olmedo Saenz for that final spot on the roster. Well one possible under dog for this spot that nobody is talking about is Michel Abreu. Now don’t think that just the only reason why I’m talking to him is because he hit a game tying homerun in the 9th inning of today’s game. That’s not the reason, I’ve been thinking about him being a bench player for The Mets since seeing Julio Franco on the team in 2006.

      Who is Michel Abreu?
He Was the co-recipient of the Sterling Award with teammate Carlos Gomez, emblematic of the top player on his Binghamton (AA) of the Eastern League team in 2006… During that season led the Eastern League in hitting and on-base percentage and ranked third in slugging percentage

In 2006 he hit .330 with 17 homeruns, 26 doubles, and 71 RBI in just 397 AB.

      The Problem:
Well for starts, he had VISA problems in 2005; which caused the Red Sox to void his contract; and then again had VISA problems in 2007. Then there is the controversy of his age.. He told the Red Sox he was 25 when he signed, turns out he was 30-31 years old. So right now he’s around 32-33 years old, which means his great 2006 season, is tampered because he put up those numbers as a 32 year old.

But the fact remains, the guy can hit, and that’s why he’s my sleeper pick to make this team. Reports have been that the Mets are impressed with him, and you can see that by the Mets staying with him even with the age controversy, and not voiding his contract after he couldn’t play at all in 2007.

The biggest highlight was not even mentioned…

    Willie argued with the umpires!

  3. DaWrightStuff says:

YEAH!!! The Mets didn’t loose to college kids!!

  4. Nate W. says:

wasnt Carlos Muniz supposed to pitch? just sayin’

its fun to hear baseball on the airwaves again, even it was a bunch of kids getting their feet wet at calling games. Nice to see Kunz and Abreu do well, they need a postive start this year.

  5. Willie Randolph = National League Manager of the year for 2008. Absolutely. Hands down. He just won that today.

  6. ScottN says:

How good was it to have a Mets game on as background during work!?! Wow, I knew I missed baseball, but I didn’t realize how much until I put the game on. Brightened my whole day!

  7. QnsNative718 says:

I noted this on the other thread but am I the only one here who wouldve actually been bummed out if they had lost this game? I know its beyond meaningless and you got AA and AAA guys out there but it wouldve still gotten to me a little bit. Anyway, Abreu for PRESIDENT!!!!!

  8. NY Cuban says:

LETS GO METS! Man it feels good to have baseball back. And Willie arguing…man I just hope he really did learn something last year.

  9. sirk says:

man why arent these games all televised ..only some of them starting friday..

the guy kept pronouncing abreu’s name incorrectly. It is pronounced michelle (like the woman’s name) not michael. Let’s get it right, this is our first baseman for the second half of the year.

The stadium isn’t even built yet and i’m already sick of the awful outfield wall configuration. Instant replay better be implemented by 2009 or we’re going to be seeing routine HR controversy at Citi.

    • tfc3rid says:

This was played on Tradition field, which is Shea… They have the very large tarp batters eye in CF… But if it hits the tarp above the line it’s a HR… The umps did not realize this…

This was NOT played on the Citi Field lite..

  12. Santanaman says:

I understand that it’s preseason and all but isn’t it preseason for Michican as well?

    Abreu saved our season….hahahahahaha

    • KFS says:

technically yes…but officially, they are 3-0 after having swept Villanova and is in the midst of their season.

  13. Santanaman says:

    oops…Michigan

  14. Nutz15 says:

We all should’ve known — Willie didn’t argue….it was Alomar who handled that.

Willie just laughed it off, as usual.

  15. reyesrules says:

Any thoughts on Vargas this year??? wasn’t he decent on Florida two years ago? Potential???

    • Nate W. says:

I’m kind of surprised that he isnt the talk of this game. He seemed to handle himself real well.

He’ll get a chance every 5th day, so we’ll see more of him while Duque and Pedro do thier own thing.

take 2 asprins and call Jeter in the morning…

  17. JDuelz (Athens, GA) says:

I love how no one argues with this donkey anymore.
