Read: Pedro Beyond 2008
By Chris Mazzone - Feb 26, 2008 1:22 pm

According to Marty Noble at MLB.com, “Pedro Martinez will not approach the team about a contract beyond 2008 – though he would be willing to discuss the matter if the club broached the topic.”

…it’s no mystery that pedro’s future will be contingent upon his health and performance this year…i don’t expect the Mets to take the risk of re-signing him before seeing how he holds up this season…

…the way i understand this is that, once the season starts, pedro is focused on pitching and winning baseball…not contract talks…so, he is not inclined to start up a dialogue…of course, should the Mets approach him, he’ll listen

Did Matt do any new pieces on Milledge? I read a pretty good article in the NY Post. While reading it you get the impression that Milledge was cocky and out of line at times. Whether he has a good personality or not, I’m pretty sure he is gonna light it up against the Mets. Lets Go Church.

I hope are boy Piazza still plays. I can see him on the Twins.

I don’t know about that. I’m no scout, but I just get a sense that Milledge is going to have a very similar career to a former top Mets prospect – Jay Payton. Both athletic and possess great tools and bat speed, but both lacking true baseball instincts necessary to become a great player.

How the Mets decide to deal with Pedro is going to be interesting. I could see them meeting mid season to work out a 1-2 year extension (maybe 1 guaranteed, and the 2nd with reasonable vesting options?)

Give him enough time to prove that he is healthy and effective, then lock him up. i really don’t want to see this playing out after the season, when they already have Perez dangling. Better all around (well, maybe not for pedro’s wallet).

Actually, it probably is good for pedro’s already overstuffed wallet. As soon as he signs, he eliminates the worry about getting hurt again and getting nothing.

Best case scenerio for 2009 at this point is Santana and Maine stay healthy, Pedro resigns mid-year and stays in one piece, and Pelfrey locks into a rotation spot (just needs to be a solid 4 or 5 at this point).

If they can go into next off season with a rotation in place of Santana, Pedro, Maine and Pelfrey, with just one spot to fill (Perez obviously being a strong candidate), that ain’t too bad. And much better than this past off season, since they will really just need anywhere form a 3 (ideal) to a 5 (good enough).

I know everyone is really worried about Perez and him signing after the season, but can we first see how he preforms. I would be more hesitant to lock him up right now than I would pedro. Perez has had one very good season with the Pirates and a good season in 07 with the Mets. I understand the market for pitchers, but if Perez bombs out this year, his price will not be nearly as high as it is right now.

If he turns in a dominant season, then I am all for the Mets throwing the bank at him as he is a young lefty who will have had three good seasons under his belt and two in a row under Peterson. But I am still a little doubtful about Perez…we shall see…

      • Chiefman says:

Perez is a Boras client so my attitude is expect to lose him. That way if he does stay I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

I’m in Atlanta, btw, and down here all these clueless Braves fans are convincing themselves Texeira (also a Boras client) has found a true home in Atlanta and will surely re-up with the Braves. Ha ! I love these delusional clowns.

I wonder if anyone has the stats on how many times a Boras client has re-signed with his team after his contract expired…I would guess it’s less than ten percent.

Who would you rather the Mets “throw the bank” at next year – Perez or Teixeira?

Both are Bora$ clients (and the Yankees will be looking for someone to play 1B next year as well).

        • FBones24 says:

Again, to me it all depends on how Perez pitches this year. If he duplicates last year or better, I would rather pay him than Tex.

No reason to discuss an extension until pedro pitches a healthy 2008 season.

I think this works out well two-fold for Pedro. If he re-signs with the Mets after picthing some during the season then he stays on the team of his preference. On the other hand he is showcasing himself to other teams and showing them that he is healthy and can produce, especially with pitching so mediocre nowadays.

  5. magic00700magic says:

Frankly, if Pedro pitches well, he will be back.

The Mets will be opening a new stadium. No way they let a fan favorite walk if he had a great year.

I look the Mets to sign him to a 2-3 year contract if he show that he is healthy.

Take that to the bank. Wilpon will not let that happen.

Again, to sum, unless Pedro gets hurt and sub-performs, he will be back. Its all about the green ($$$) baby, and the Wilpons would be better off with Pedro than without.

  6. Vote for Pedroooooo.
Stay healthy! I think he’ll stick around

  7. the clap says:

If Pedro plays it smart, he’ll keep smiling and dancing and keep quiet otherwise, just riding the coattails behind Johan the Ace. If he can be the healthy version of El Duque this year, throwing baffling frisbees against the other team’s #2 and #3 starters, he’ll be on pace for 15+ wins easy and really put the pressure on the Mets to overpay him in $$$ and years this summer.
