Last night on NY1, Tom McDonald talked one on one with Pedro Martinez, who had the following to say about:
His overall health:
“Right now my health is exactly where I’d like it to be all year. That’s how good I feel. If I’m this way all year, you’re gonna see lots of smiles and you’re gonna have a lot of fun with the things that I’ll probably be able to do.”
Pitching alongside Johan Santana:
“We actually met a long time ago. Minnesota and Boston shared the same town in spring training. I remember exchanging a lot with Santana,a especially with my arrival to Boston. Santana was a young kid, a young rookie, he asked me a couple of questions about the change-up and right now I’d say that’s probably the best change-up you can find out there. I’m glad I was able to talk to him back then and keep the closeness with each-other. It’s not only because Santana is so good as a player, but because he’s such a great human being.”
If it will be odd not being the team’s ace:
“No, not at all. To be honest, I’ll talk to you from my heart like I always do. I’ll tell you there was a time when I first came up and it didn’t matter who was in front of me, when I was given the ball and called ‘the guy,’ ‘the headliner,’ or whatever you guys wanted to call me. I was that guy and never stopped to look back about what other guys felt and I don’t expect Johan to do anything like that either. I expect him to come and perform and do what he’s got to do like he always does. I wish him the best and I wish I could help him ease into it even more. I don’t really care what spot I’m on, I believe my spot will be the headline for me. He’s gonna be the headliner on the first day and I’m gonna be the headliner on the second day…
“So, it makes no difference to me when I pitch, today or tomorrow. I’m a professional, I understand what I have to do. I’m so thankful that we have someone like Johan, that could probably be in my spot today or in anybody’s spot.”
…interesting…it sounds to me like pedro just assumes that santana will be the team’s opening day starter…
…added to by Peter Wade, who provided the quotes…
…as always, it’s a total pleasure to listen to pedro…he’s interesting and engaging…some of the stuff about being the number two starter may come across in print as pedro just trying to say the right thing…but watching and listening to the interview, i believe he really has no problem with it…now, the recent comments made by reporters about his health issues, i believe it does bother him despite his denial…you can tell he takes it like they are questioning his heart…

“Right now my health is exactly where I’d like it to be all year. That’s how good I feel. If I’m this way all year, you’re gonna see lots of smiles and you’re gonna have a lot of fun with the things that I’ll probably be able to do.”

There is no feeling like being at the park with Pedro on the mound. Get ready for a lot of curtain calls this year. Pedro will always be the Mets’ superstar. We would not be where we are today if he didn’t sign with us and ushered in a new Mets era.
What do you mean by “not where we are today without him”?
I am pretty sure that this team could have collapsed very nicely without him.
I get that a feel-good story about Pedro gets you fired up and ready for the season, but let’s not lose sight of the fact that this team has quite a bit to prove this year.
Pedro was the first piece Minaya picked up when building the 06 team. Beltran, Delgado and the rest were willing to come to our team because of the big time image that came with Pedro. Not to mention all the international free agent who want to play for a friendly team (trying not to use flag words here)
Juu know what im sayin?
Delgado signed with the Marlins because of the Mets FO. If you remember Degado said he didn’t like how the FO treated him when he was a free agent.
Beltran fell into are laps because the Yanks didn’t want him and the Astros didn’t want to give him a full no trade clause.
Wags came because the Mets outbid everyone else.
Pedro however did put the fans in their seats his first year.
Totally!
I foresee Pedro, at some point, popping off about not being “the guy” on this team. It will become a source of tension. I have seen this, and know it to be true.
After all, he handled not being “the guy” really well in Boston, right?
^ I love this guy ^
I really don’t think Pedro cares which day he dominates the opposing lineup. I actually think he’ll enjoy pitching to the challenge to outdo what Santana did the day before.
I think Pedro had a problem with Curt Schilling, the pompous ass. He likes Santana very much and is also a little older and closer to the end of his career.
It won’t be a problem. I’ll be shocked if it is.
yeah he handled it by winning a world series…by the way, it was on Schilling as well, who is known to be a major pain in the a**
Wasn’t there also the little issue of not letting Grady Little take him out of that game and costing his team a Championship?
We aren’t talking about Schilling. We were noting how not having total control over where the spotlight is shining effects Pedro.
You’re mixing up your stories.
Pedro never forced Grady to leave him in the game. That’s revisionist and inaccurate.
Pedro pushed strongly to come in relief for game 7 the next year, when the Red Sox were completing their amazing comeback.
But hey, that doesn’t support your stance, so twist the truth.
that’s just a lie DannyPhantom, its amazing how many people on this board just make stuff up, or simply do not know what they’re talking about, its like you don’t even follow baseball. Grady Little left him in that game, every pitcher wants to stay in the game, end of story. If Grady Little decided to take him out, that would have been it.
Wow.
I got my facts a little wrong, (which I apologize for btw, I got a little confused.), and in the world of MetsBlog I am branded a liar.
That makes total sense. I mean, what are the odds that I could just be wrong? Obviously I must be a liar.
Nonsense. Whatever problems he had in Boston have nothing to do with his current situation. First, in Boston he WAS the ace, with nothing to prove, whereas now he knows he’s in a comeback situation. Second, he’s five long and difficult years more mature now than he was then.
Also, I suspect that Pedro just didn’t like Schilling personally, which wouldn’t be the first or the last time Schilling rubbed someone the wrong way. Guy rode into Boston on a big white horse with an “S” on his chest, all sanctimony and self-promotion. Wouldn’t surprise me a bit if that’s what put Pedro’s back up.
Anyway, in three years here we haven’t seen a bit of “Pedro the prima donna,” and I don’t think we will this year.
The way Johan has handled his arrival is way different to how Schilling did.
Johan has shown great respect to Pedro, and the two of them seem to get along great. There will be no problem.
if pedro is healthy…….scary
Johan Santana would not be in Blue and Orange if not for Minaya signing Pedro Martinez.
Pedro = Credibility.
I hope we give Petey a 3 year extension.
Even though the experience of Pedro would be helpful in the Mets dugout for years to come, I don’t see him getting an extension with the Mets. Pedro will most likely not agree for a contract less than 3 years, but with his health, will he be reliable for 3 years?
it all depends on how he does this season…. if he has a great season and doesn’t get injured then yes he’ll probably want 3 years….. but if he has health problems or anything he can’t ask for 3 years
It seems to me that Pedro eats up the respected vet role. He’s more comfortable now than he ever seemed in Boston. He will always be revered for what he did in the past, he doesn’t have to carry a team, and NY loves him. What can go wrong? Keep him on.
I agree completely, and whole heartedly.
Pedro may not be ‘the main man’ any more, but he’s still The Man. And it makes NO SENSE to let him leave.
It makes even less sense to sign him to any kind of long term contract extension.
2 year extension with pedro and and a third of he hits certain innings in his two years (350 for both years???) also an option for a third if he dont hit the innings and they still want him back
A class act who proves that you don’t need steroids to make it (take that roger). He is probably the funniest person in baseball (take that brett myres). I wwent to a game where the sprinklers turned on, and he just started running through them.
probably one of the funnest guys to see play the game or even cheer his team on. if pedro stays healthy i think the mets would be willing to bring him back for 2 years with a club option for the 3rd year.
Ryan Synagogue,
I couldn’t disagree more. It is a common romantic view of the situation. But Beltran, contrary to what fans wax poetic about, came because of money, with or without Pedro. He went to the Yankees at the last minute, too, offering his services for less. Pedro doesn’t quite affect your decision like the mighty dollar can.
What happened is us fans correlated the arrivals of both players, symbolically, with this Minaya era. But that doesn’t mean Pedro brought us Beltran. Though we like the storybook idea of it. Now I love Pedro a lot, but let’s be honest, he has given us one good year of 3, the two others were not good, they were injury-filled. Production was not there. Look at Pedro’s salary over the last 3 years. Look at money per win, the contract was bad. That is why the championship Red Sox wouldn’t pay him and give him that guaranteed contract. All of MLB knew his arms was damaged goods. That is the true unbiased view of the situation of Pedro’s arrival.
Yes he’s been fun all, and I nice image for the Mets to project, He sells t-shirts and has a nice smile. But in the evaluation factor known as production, Pedro at best can give us 2 good years out of 4. His first year was great. His last two were a waste of money.
Of course none of that will matter if he contributes to a championship team this year. But so far, we need to stop buying into Pedro bringing over other players. This is a business, players pick their teams based on salary. Unless two teams are offering similar amounts, only then do other players and factors contribute to the decision of a free agent.
The other idea that it legitimized the Mets is also a bogus argument. nothing legitimizes a team more than wins. No one cares is a superstar is on your team. Most teams have a superstar. No team runs and hides. They play like they would anyway. Pedro only legitimized the Mets to Mets fans. Colorado was legitimized for their winning. If they signed a big name, who got injured 2/3 years, no team would care. The only thing that matters is what happens between the lines.
