In the spirit of these remarks, Michael Salfino takes a look at the best bench-clearing brawls in Mets history in a column for , including the 1986 fight between Ray Knight and Eric Davis, which resulted in Roger McDowell and Jesse Orosco playing in the outfield.

To listen to Adam Rubin from the Daily News talk about the Mets, check out Gotham Baseball Live from last night.

Facing Clemens, a new book by MiLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo is now for sale.  According to Mayo, the book will give you a sense of what it’s like to stand in the box and face Roger Clemens.

…yes, but will he throw a bat at me, jon…i need to know

At Hot Foot, Andrew Beaton begins a two-day discussion with Tim Marchman from the New York Sun.

Apparently, John Maine is addicted to crossword puzzles, which you can learn more about in an interview he did with the Times Herald-Record.

Maine, on the key to finishing a puzzle:

“Overcoming your frustration.  It gets very frustrating when you’re so close and you can’t get those last one or two or three words. I’ll get so frustrated sometimes that I’ll put it down for awhile, and then I’ll start back up a few minutes later.”

…i was told this once before by one of the most kind, patient, old people i ever knew, in that consistently starting and finishing crossword puzzles will help make you patient, disciplined and focused to finish what you start…

…for what it’s worth, i have never started, nor finished, a crossword puzzle, which may explain a lot

Lastly, in the Star-Ledger, Dan Graziano explains why Luis Castillo is the definition of why the Mets are a Win-Now Team.

Matt, you’ve NEVER STARTED a crossword puzzle? Of any kind? Not even in TV Guide or Highlights magazine?

  2. K-Hern says:

I am a Cryptoquote/Cryptogram man myself, which can also be very frustrating. It takes a little bit of discipline to not look in the back of the book for clues as well.

I disagree that Castillo means they are a ‘win now” team.

Teams have the core guys that do the heavy lifting, then an assorment of complimentary and role players. Castillo is a role player.

The Mets core is still young enough that they could have a sustained run of contention. Just keep swapping in and out the spare parts to keep the machine running.

A team like the Giants though was win now (but not cabable of it of course!) When every player, including your stars, is at the end of the line and you are looking at winning it all or blowing it up to start over, that is a win now team!

Also need to look at replacability. if Castillo went out for the year tomorrow, they could pick up a replacement reasonably easily and just keep moving right along.

Can’t say the same about DW, JR, JS, etc.

  4. CitizenSnips says:

Only my hometown newspaper would drill someone about crossword puzzles for an interview.

  5. EastFallowfield says:

Great thing about crosswords-no one’s gonna check your work. Fill in the blanks, hold it up, look I’m a genius.

  6. cver says:

Matt, usually when you are thrown a soft ball like that you never miss as in:

It gets very frustrating when you’re so close and you can’t get those last one or two or three words

You mean, like when you can’t get that last one or two wins at the end of the season?

  7. Number41 says:

    A) Let’s face it, Luis was part of the Santana price
    and
    B) Real men do the Jumble in the Daily News, sittin’ on the high stool, sippin’ a draft for breakfast….

One of my favorite brawls was back in 1989 when Rob Dibble hit Tim Teufel square in the back with a 100 MPH Fastball and then came in seemingly to taunt him. Benches cleared, Juan Samuel went after someone on the Reds with a karate kick, Strawberry had to be restrained multiple times then I think after he was thrown out of the game, called the Reds clubhouse to challenge them to fight again! Also there was a great brawl between the Mets and the Braves in 94 I think after Ryan Thompson hit a grannie off Smoltz, then on the next pitch Smoltz nailed John Cangelosi on the back. As a matter of fact I think the picture of Cangelosi charging at Smoltz made the front cover of Sports Illustrated that week.

  9. AzMetsFan says:

Im all about Sudoku. I don’t know what those crossword puzzles are talking about.

  10. Gaspar says:

Can’t believe the guy didn’t ask Maine if he used a pen or pencil when he does puzzles. Compulsive-obsessive types (like me) use a pen. Got within three or four words of finishing a Sunday Times crossword once. Those babies are tough. Cryptics are way too hard for me, as are the diagramless ones.

It’s possible that resigning Castillo was part of the strategy to lure Santana. I’ve seen plenty of reports that those two are good friends. That could very well have been a factor in putting the Mets on the top of his trade list…So when evaluating the Castillo contract, consider that it might have a lot more value than just what we get out of Castillo on the field.
