The Mets lead the Tigers 2–0 after five innings, thanks to a triple by Anderson Machado and a sac-fly by Ramon Castro.

Mike Pelfrey tossed two shut-out innings, while Brian Stokes, Matt Wise and Pedro Feliciano each threw one scoreless inning.

from what i can gather, pelfrey looked strong, setting down the Tigers in order during the first, and allowing just a single to Magglio Ordonez…he was aggressive, too, throwing a lot of strikes, and ‘pounding the zone,’ which is what we should all want to see

…by the way, word from St. Lucie is that Pedro Martinez will make his first start of the spring on March 6 in Viera against the Nationals…

    Yeah, Pelfry was great in ST in 07 too, and we all know what happened once the season started.

    I hope El Duque gets the 5th spot come April. Having Pelfry down in AAA for a couple of months certainly won’t hurt him. And of course he’s going to come up to New York at some point during the season once El Duque gets hurt.

    An arrest warrant has been issued by the Irvine Police Department for St. Louis Cardinals utilityman Scott Spiezio on six charges stemming from a Dec. 30 incident.

    The warrant alleges driving under influence, driving under the influence with a blood alcohol content of .08 percent or more, hit and run, aggravated assault, assault and battery.

      all i’m saying is for a guy like Collazo with a very small chance of making the team, an outing like this is really bad for him since spring training is what these guys have to look forward to.

    I *definitely* can’t say this one devastated me since I’m also a Tigers fan (since the early 1990’s…and yes, I suffered through 2002-2004 when the Tigers were almost a Minor League team…I have not-quite fond memories of Nate Cornejo blowing his arm out and Franklyn German, a reliever who made Guillermo Mota look extremely good. In fact, I remember when they drafted Preston Larrison, his quality circle changeup at the time, and when he appeared in the All-Star Futures Game in terms of a guy pitching TODAY.). However, Collazo getting the snot pounded out of him was also something I could’ve done without. Good to see Pelfrey do well, though, also Feliciano and our new guy in the ‘pen, Matt Wise.

      I have to say, I am indeed devastated by Collazo’s outing, I blew my whole afternoon doing play-by-play on that game, and now look what I have to show for it ;)

    A nice outing for our pitchers-other-than-collazo, though. Considering we are much more likely to see Pelf, Wise, Feliciano, Sosa, and Stokes anyway…that’s OK by me.

    The best thing to come out of today’s game is to see that Pelfrey did quite well and seems to be a lot more confident than he was last year. After reading the interviews on the newspaper blogs a lot of the reporters mentioned seeing it themselves also.

    Also it is great to see that Wise, Stokes, Kunz and Registrar have started off good. I’d like to see Wise and Registrar make this team but I have a feeling Sosa has the spot of long man secured.

      I’ve been really down on Pelf for a while. I’m really pulling for him to prove me wrong though. I never doubted his ability but I never liked his presence on the mound. It looks like he’s making strides though. Confidence is key. It’s still early but great start for him. I’d love nothing better than to see him pitch his way onto this team.

    pelf always looks good in spring training then sucks balls come regular season. he has no control over his pitches and looks like he pitches scared.

      he had 7 innings pitched in spring training in 2006 and yes a good spring last year
      in 06 he came up at the end of the year and looked..eh ok
      and obviously we know how last year started
      You do also realize he ended the year strong right?

    Doesnt take away the fact that he looked horrific on the moun for 95% of his big league career. he needs a ton of work. he has zero control over his pitches including his fastball which must have run away from hitters 99% of the time. to start the season and go 0-7 on a team that won 88 games last yr is very sad. i know he got little run support some starts but the guy was laboring through everyone of his starts last season throwing 100 pitches in 5 innings of work. Hes a major work in progress.

    the guy shouldnt be cut but he should learn how to play the game down in AAA until hes proven he has command over his pitches. its one thing to be a young phenom ala gooden or king felix in seatle but pelfrey hasnt shown many positives while up in the majors. He battled last spring and won a spot in the rotation only to prove his immaturity and be sent down. let him develop before hes screwed up for good.

      he hasn’t shown many positives because every mets coach has told him to try and paint the corners and develop on those secondary pitches. hence, in his first seven starts he’d

      throw about 91-92 on the corners and get lit up.
      in the atlanta game, where he just went out and let it rip, he was great. not to mention he did quite nicely in his other starts in september.

      i’m sorry but i really do love duque as the #5 but enough is enough. this guy is always injured and never has been there when we needed him. send him to the bullpen and with him, heilman, and sanchez you have a extremely nice core.

    here we go…was at the game today….fun to see the boys play again(even though we brought a scrub squad today,,,,dissapointing.). however, few observations

    1. Pelf looked great today….nice command of pitches, nice composure and made the Tigers starters(really an impressive lineup!!!!) look off balance and outmatched.

    2. Feliciano pitched nicely as well getting out of a jam after faltering early.

    3. Abreu has a nice, powerful swing. singling his first ab…making good contact in other abs. looked very comfortable at plate. deserves a look at 1B definitely a player 2 watch this spring.

    4. Wise has a bizzare pitching motion, looks very awkward pitching but seemed to be effective today.

    5. Church is a big dude, nice swing, didnt do all that much today.

    6. Game was going nicely untill the Collazo debacle. looked plain awful….had 2 leave and take the kids for icecream…

    Fair amount of mets fans there today…was nice 2 see.
