Yesterday, the Mets tied the University of Michigan in their first exhibition game of the spring.
For clips from the game, including David Wright’s two-run home run, check out Newsday.
Also in Newsday, according to David Lennon, “Billy Wagner nearly started a beanball war with the University of Michigan after one overzealous Wolverine tried to bunt on him in the fourth inning.”
In a report for the Daily News, Adam Rubin explains why Aaron Heilman will now have to do a rendition of Hail to the Victors for having allowed a run during yesterday’s game.
In the Star-Ledger, Jeremy Cothran profiles Michigan’s pitcher Eric Katzman, who is from Harrington Park, NJ.

More important to me, and many others I’m sure, in the Newsday article with Wagner is the following:
Extra bases
Orlando Hernandez finally threw a batting practice session and looked sharp. El Duque has been delayed by foot problems.
Of course, that El Duque news was posted about on MetsBlog, linking to a report by Steve Popper in the Bergen Record, yesterday afternoon - or seven posts before this one.
Thanks Cerrone for linking the Newsday video. It was great seeing JR and DW playing again.. and the home run was nice too.
Billy Wagner needs meds. He was seriously irked by a college kid’s bunt attempt in a ST exhibition? It was probably the biggest moment’s in the kid’s career to even be facing Wagner.
Wagner needs to grow some brass fixtures and stop trying to compensate so much. Attempting to intimidate every young player he’s threatened by doesn’t say much for his manood.
I agree. When I was reading this I was thinking to myself “what a d-bag….”
I mean even if you look @ his quote:
“If he got that bunt down, I would have drilled the next guy,” Wagner said. “Play to win against Villanova.”
Moron. Let the kid go out and have some fun…
I’m really looking forward to the day when Wagner is no longer on this team. Obviously, I root for the guy to do well because he’s on the Mets, but he’s very difficult to like. For these college kids, it’s a huge deal to go up against a major league team, even if it is only an exhibition. Why shouldn’t they play to win?
Me too. He is a great closer, but as a person he is very unlikable. I remember not being very fond of him before he was even on the Phils.
oh the sound of that bat…
C’mon Wagner, could you at least channel that anger in another way? Like putting a 98 mbp fastball in Pat Burrell’s rib cage after J-Ro has a bases-clearing double in the ninth inning?
Call me ignorant - I love baseball, but not having played past the middle school level, I don’t know some of the nuances of the “unwritten rules” - but what would make Wagner want to hit the guy? Seems like if it worked it would have been a smart play. Is this one of those macho Billy Bad-Ass things?
hope there are many more highlights like that and more to come.
