Note: Carp, Abreu, Marlon and Back-up 1B
By Matthew Cerrone - Feb 28, 2008 10:25 am

On Tuesday, Mets 1B Michel Abreu hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth giving the Mets a 4-4 tie.

Yesterday, during a loss to the Tigers, Abreu was 1–4 with a run scored.  However, with the bases loaded in the ninth, he hit into a game-ending double play.

…i’m getting a lot of e-mail from readers wondering if abreu will be the team’s back-up first baseman…

However, talking with reporters yesterday, Marlon Anderson said he is capable of being Carlos Delgado’s back-up first baseman.

…the sooner we all accept that marlon, Ruben Gotay and Damion Easley will be this team’s all-purpose, every-position, back-up infielders, the better we all will be

…by the way, according to SNY’s Kevin Burkhardt, Mike Carp is not in camp with the Mets…

…this seems odd to me, in that he was such a popular player last spring, garnering praise from Omar Minaya to Willie Randolph…but, i guess after a sluggish, injury-plagued season, he’ll have to wait until next year…which still seems odd to me, if for not other reason than i’d think the team would want as much of a read on him as possible, seeing as Carlos Delgado is a free-agent after next season…unless they already know something about carp that we don’t know

this whole overblown story about who our right-handed pinch hitter for rf and backup 1b seems like much ado about nothing to me. If our worst problem is guy number 25 on the roster, that’s pretty good in my book. listen to the FAN and this is what’s going to sink the whole ship.

I know, especially Mike and the Mad Dog who ask everyone associated with the Mets (Eddie C, Omar, Willie, etc.) about this “right handed bat.” Who is going to be the right handed bat off of the bench? Who is going to platoon with Church because he can’t hit lefties? Who is going to be the right handed hitting outfielder when Alou goes down? Right handed? Right handed? SHUUUUTTTTT UPPPP!

We have the best left handed pitcher in baseball M&MD. Shuuuut up.

      • Ferragamo says:

Maybe the emergence of 1B Lucas Duda in the Mets system last year has hurt Carp’s chances. I’m pretty sure Duda was one of the minor-league invites to Spring Training this year, I could be wrong though.

        • Ferragamo says:

Adam Rubin over at the Daily News has a full list of the entire advanced camp roster which includes “Angel Calero, Nick Carr, Stephen Clyne, John Holdzkom, Scott Moviel, Eric Niesen, Elvin Ramirez, Lucas Duda, Nick Evans, Juan Lagares, Richard Lucas, Daniel Murphy, Ruben Tejada, Gregory Veloz, Sean McCraw, Francisco Pena, Ezequiel Carrera, Brahiam Maldonado, Richard Pena and Raul Reyes”

          No Mike Carp.

  2. metdiva says:

Yeah…..like maybe he knows Teixeria will be our 2009 first baseman :)

  3. stickguy says:

Carp has no chance of making the team, and they have seen plenty of him, so might as well go ahead and let him play with the minor league guys. I assume he will be the starting 1B someplace (AA again? ), and hopefully stays healthy and shows some promise.

Abreu is intriguing. I think he is best off going to AAA and playing every day. If he crushes the ball, he might even be a dark horse for 2009.

but more importanly, I think that the team has no one that could replace Delgado for more than 1-2 games. Green was fine last year when Delgado went on the DL.

So, if Carlos hits the DL this year, whoever they call up probably has to become the regular 1B, not just a a spare part for the bench. And Abreu is the best bet for that.

Wonder if he can play the OF at all in a pinch?

    • gowrightgo says:

Abreu is a competent piece in the event that Delgado is injured for some period of time. However, he will not be with big club as the 25th man because he has no other positional value meaning he can not be a fill in outfielder, etc.

He can rake but is very old for the league. Likely 32 – 34 yrs old but it is not clear.

He could be a stop gap guy if injury hits and he has an advanced bat. I know nothing of his ability to field. I do know he hits right handed

  4. jamie says:

power outtage. he’s not coming near the bigs for awhile.

  5. DaveSchneck says:

A WS title or even(gasp!) a World Series championship this year and the new park next year(along with alot of $$$$) might just entice Texiera. That, my freinds, would be an absolutly sick lineup.

  6. thornie says:

Why do I have the feeling that if Delgado is out with an injury mid-season, we are going to be pulling a John Olerud/Jeff Conine type out of retirement to play 1st base. I know he was terrible for us a few years ago but the Pirates signed Doug Mientkiewicz for nothing. He seemed to do well in that late innings defensive replacement role for the Yankees last year.

    • ArmandoReynoso says:

I’d rather bring John Olerud’s dad out of retirement than bring back Mientkiwicz again… unless we can get league approval to DH for him every time he plays.

  7. Santanaman says:

Texiera would be as cool as having the best lefthander in the game…oh wait :.)

  8. ArmandoReynoso says:

“…if for no other reason than i’d think the team would want as much of a read on him as possible”

I don’t know, but I would take Carp’s absence to mean that they do have a read on him, and they don’t like what they’ve seen (in the past year).

  9. DonDopeyNJ says:

i agree with abreu playing in AAA all year. then if delgado gets hurt, give him a shot as a fill in. of course i’m basing that on two exhibition games, that i didn’t see, only heard. so basically, my opinion on him could change by next week.

    • gowrightgo says:

He is solid offensively. 2yrs ago he was mashing AA ball in binghamton. But last year he lost his whole season due to Visa problems. Obviously back in the mix this year but only as you said…AAA full timer who can come up if needed due to Delgado injury.

  10. Mr. Bananagrabber says:

Maybe I have this wrong, but isn’t Carp a little old to be a prospect?

I don’t think he’s Ryan Howard (which would mean he would be worth the wait) but I think he’s about at or past the point where he needs to show he’s got what it takes.

    • Mr. Bananagrabber says:

After looking it up, I guess not. He’s only going to be 22 this year – but MLB player search doesn’t have him listed on any team. Hmmm.

  11. Santanaman says:

Too bad for Carp. I loved him last year(ST). I was fired up that he was in line to replace Delgado. Don’t be surprised to see him late this year or next.

I’ll go out on a limb here and say Carp will be a part of the club at some point. He has this year to prove it though.

    • krumbledkookie says:

You know, I was actually encouraged by Carp’s numbers at AA last year. If you compare with his first year in St. Lucie, he cut down on the strikeouts, and even though his power numbers were down, he was still productive. So I’m confused as to why he’s not in camp. They must know something that we don’t, or else this makes little sense.

He’s probably a long shot to ever be on the team, but worth keeping an eye on.

      • Another Matt says:

Actually his strikeouts/AB were about the same last year as in ‘06.

He’s gotta mash this year to make it. Given last year he was somewhat hampered, he’s still got the potential to do it, but this is probably his last chance to show he can be a full timer in the bigs.

  12. Mike Vail says:

Barring injuries and given the status of options and guaranteed contracts the roster is fixed, nobody really likely to be knocked out of group given mets reluctance to lose a player on waivers without getting soomething in exchange.

Starters – Schneider, Delgado, Castillo, Reyes, Wright, Alou, Beltran, Church

Bench is fixed with Castro, Easley, Chavez, Anderson, Gotay

Rotation Santana, Martinez, Maine, Perez, Hernandez
Pen – Wagner, Heilman, Sanchez, Feliciano, Schoenweis, Wise, Sosa

Of course injuiries are certain to strike aready guys like El Duque, Sanchez, Chavez have uncertainty in their health.

This would give shots to pelfrey, Abreau, Lugo, Register, Smith, Saenz, Brady Clark

  13. Dennis A says:

What are the chances that Wright sees an inning of 1B this year?
