by Matthew Cerrone

my flight to West Palm Beach leaves in roughly 30 minutes, after which, i’ll grab a rental car and head to Port St. Lucie

…i’m a nervous…i don’t like to fly…it’s odd, too, because i used to love it…but, the older i get, the more i feel i already avoided the odds of it ending badly…so why continue to push my luck…

…i’m excited to get to camp…tonight, i will be meeting other fans and bloggers at Duffy’s Sports Grill around 5 pm…tomorrow, i intend to travel with the team to Vero Beach to see them play the Dodgers, which every other fan continues to tell is must-see experience…

…otherwise, the next week on MetsBlog will operate more like a diary, than my typically mini op-eds and linking around the web…instead, SNY has armed me with a mini-cam, a Nikon D40, press credentials and my laptop, and so i intend to just wander around camp, trying not to get in to trouble, while live blogging the experience…i hope you enjoy it

I’m the same way Matt. Used to love flying as a child but as an adult, I usually white knuckle it. Very strange. I blame all those documentaries on airplane disasters I watched on A&E. Just remember, when in doubt, drink.

Nothing to worry about. You have a greater chance of dying in a car crash on I95….This partnership with SNY is the best thing that could have happened to you Matt…good luck…I’m looking forward to your notes from ST.

mhochman March 1, 2008 at 10:09 am

Especially I-95 i south florida…. Although Floridas Turnpike isn’t much better, I was zooming along the turnpike doing 85, and I was getting passed like i was standing still!

acraane March 1, 2008 at 10:50 am

Don’t get me wrong…I never said it was rational :p

Honestly, it’s the take off and climb that has me looking out the window, after that it’s usually smooth sailing for me.

I feel the same way about flying. I even sit in airports before flights and tally up how many flights I’ve been on and try to quantify the stats. 9 times out of 10, my flights involve traveling to a Mets game. Once I get on a plane, I try to sleep immediately. I figure is something goes wrong, it’ll go wrong during take-off, so it’s best to be asleep (or try).

gipper913 March 1, 2008 at 1:28 pm

Actually, landing problems are more common….and most vulnerable when on the ground – runway incursions, etc. But, still….safest way to travel. I recommend taking a flying lesson – the 1/2 hr intro courses are fun, not too expensive, and gets rid of some of the mystery. Also, some airlines have an ausio channel on their audio system that broacasts the air traffic control radio….can be fun, informative and calming to hear the pilots’ chatter with the ATC.

Joe Bacci March 1, 2008 at 1:36 pm

I agree, good advice… do you fly gipper?

stickguy March 1, 2008 at 8:24 am

cool gig Matt. Guess this whole full time job thing is working out OK after all!

I wouldn’t say that i am scared to fly, but every time i’m up there, I keep thinking HOW CRAZY we are as human beings to get in a machine that takes us that far from the ground.

Not to mention that we put our lives in the hands of 2 or 3 people and a computer.

Matt –

As they like to say on the radio, first time, long time.

Anyway, enjoy camp, looking forward to living vicariously through your experiences. Have a great time!

And of course, LETS GO METS!

Cool … they even gave you a dSLR and a minicam. Looking forward to your posts, Matt. Have fun too.

I also don’t like flying anymore. The idea of being in a plane that is going down is terrifying to me.

Charlie March 1, 2008 at 9:46 am

You know, we always give Matt tons of props for working his way up to getting this deal with SNY. But, SNY needs some credit, too. I mean, way to embrace the fan base by including (and arming) Matt.

It’s pretty cool.

Constnza81V2.0 March 1, 2008 at 9:49 am

Good luck Matt. Everything is going to be fine!

And I just got a NIkonD40 right before my honeymoon a couple of months ago. Needless to say, even if you’re a lousy photographer, the pictures it produces are stunning.

Congrats Matt! You made it onto Yahoo.com. First thing i see this morning on Yahoo’s main page is a link for a tour of the new Mets stadium. I click on it and it’s an SNY clip with you. Within seconds I hear the words MetsBlog.com. All in my Yahoo viewing window. Fantastic.

robnoxious March 1, 2008 at 11:27 am

You should see a huge bump in numbers from Yahoo. Keep us posted on the influx, albeit brief, of traffic.

Hilarious reference TMI

mhochman March 1, 2008 at 10:11 am

I’m not incredily fond of flying, first, you are in a machine, which for all its Redundancies, has a single point if failure, the wing… anything happens to that and ouch..

But the REAL reason i hate flying, is the Airline industry, and industry that doesn’t care a whit about their customers. the last 3 times i’ve flown, there have been problems, and the Airlines have been unwilling to do anything to help the situation.

sagan March 1, 2008 at 10:28 am

first time, long time – refresh 50x a day for well over a year. i will be at both games this weekend and at duffy’s tonight. i am looking foward to meeting matt and everyone else. go mets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

killinmesmalls82 March 1, 2008 at 10:29 am

Matt, I have been reading this site every morning for what feels like at least 3 years now. I just wanted to say thanks and congrats on how far this site has come.

OrangeNBlueSince82 March 1, 2008 at 11:13 am

WFAN’s Ed Coleman and NY Daily News’ Adam Rubin reporting that Carlose Delgado is flying back to New York today to have an MRI on his hip after feeling discomfort following yesterday’s game. Let’s hope it’s nothing serious.

stickguy March 1, 2008 at 11:37 am

That’s not good. Although maybe we can just eliminate the in/out, is he shot? drama, and just shelve Deldono and El Dono together! And if he was going to go down, better now than part way into the season!

Actually, it Dlegado did have an injury and was going to be out long term, it would pave the way for the feel good story of the year: Michelle Abreu winning the 1B job, and becoming rookie of the year!

Joe Bacci March 1, 2008 at 12:05 pm

Oh man.

I know it will never happen, and i know it probably shouldn’t, but could you just imagine for a second if we could sign Piazza to play first. If his defense even came close to serviceable, we’d win the world series.

… okay there is my stupid thought for the day.

Seriously though, who would play first if we lost Delgado for an extended period of time, and what would that do to the batting order?

robnoxious March 1, 2008 at 11:25 am

I will be going down on the 13th with my Dad and Son – flying into Orlando going to the Braves or Nationals camp. Then going down that night to Port St Lucie … Seeing three games and flying back Sunday night from West Palm Beach back into Long Island. Duffy’s a great. I will be there, but two weeks too late.

metsftw March 1, 2008 at 11:28 am

Joey, do you like movies about gladiators?

ravin108 March 1, 2008 at 11:44 am

Matt,

Don’t order the fish!

gipper913 March 1, 2008 at 1:33 pm

Yes, yes, I remember, I had lasagna.

KFS March 1, 2008 at 11:28 am

A Nikon D40? They can’t give you a D300? You’re big time now! Get back in the negotiating room and do not leave until you get at least a D200.

seriously though, that is one sweet camera, ask them for a zoom lense if you can, the close-ups are amazing.

DAG March 1, 2008 at 11:34 am

good reference to the greatest comedy of all-time

Joe Bacci March 1, 2008 at 11:46 am

Matt, Get SNY to comp a private jet for you and then tell them to give me a call!

Joe Bacci March 1, 2008 at 12:09 pm

I can’t wait for the first year of the Santana Era…

Lets Go Mets!

OrangeNBlueSince82 March 1, 2008 at 11:55 am

You’re right Stickguy, I’d rather have him miss time now than during the season. However, they said they don’t believe it to be serious. It’s the same balky hip that caused him to miss time last September. We need Delgado to be good. He’s key for this lineup. Hiopefully he’s OK, but if not Omar has gotta get on the phone.

The Milledge Idiot March 1, 2008 at 12:08 pm

Good Luck, We’re all Counting On You…..

KinersKornerman March 1, 2008 at 12:48 pm

Matt, you are da MAN. We all wish we were you at ST. Good luck, bro.

gipper913 March 1, 2008 at 1:23 pm

Cerrone,

I love flying, I hope for turbulence….but, the best cure for fear of flying is to sign up for a half-hour introdcution to flying session with a flight instructor. When you get your hands and feet on the controls of a small plane both taxiing and in the air…..any fear tends to melt away. Turbulence feels more like a pothole than “oh, god we’re gonna die!’

Good luck in PSL!

metsftw March 1, 2008 at 1:26 pm
