News: Delgado’s Hip Situation
By Jordan Zakarin - Mar 1, 2008 2:11 pm

According to the Associated Press, the Mets have sent Carlos Delgado back to New York for an MRI.

The injury is unrelated to the right hip flexor that kept Delgado sidelined for 15 games last September.

GM Omar Minaya labeled the MRI precautionary, and doesn’t expect Delgado to miss an “extended” amount of time.

There is also no urgency to find a potential long-term replacement for Delgado; Minaya believes any number of Mets’ bench players could fill the roll, including minor league 1B Michel Abreu, who is right now slotted to start the season at Triple A.

…cross your fingers, because any long term injury to Delgado really hurts this lineup, especially with Moises Alou’s fragility… that said, we’ve heard time and time again that the team is comfortable with its multi-purpose bench despite outside rumblings that they need a power hitting backup 1B/LF… we may see if that holds up soon…

We might need one outside the roster now after this collision, anyone thinking about getting Xavier Nady again?

    I am…

  2. 5and7 says:

did u post this thread as soon as they collided, Jordan? It would seem you kiboshed the Mets

  3. Koko says:

I guess Port St. Lucie (and Florida in general, I assume) has a lack of MRI machines and doctors.

Matt C – Don’t get hurt while you’re in Florida.

    • Two-By-Four says:

If you come to think of it Florida is the perfect place for some of these Mets to get medical help. The Doctors down there are well versed in Geriatrics. :)

  4. domosnacks5 says:

We need Xavier Nady on this team worse than anything. That’s my stance and I’m sticking to it.

this might be the biggest load of s i’ve ever read. i understand you can’t make yourself seem desperate but nobody on the planet believe michel abreu can replace delgado for any serious amount of time.

i love the pitching staff and the starting lineup but we are seriously lacking offensive depth, same as last year. the idea that it’s already being exposed a little is scary

  6. 5and7 says:

anyone else notice the hand motions jose valentin was using when they showed him in the dugout?

    • dboy0308 says:

      hahaha yes that was awesome

he kept pointing at the guy next to him and then finally did the beejay gesture thing with the tounge and cheek

      hilarious just cause it’s valentine

      • 5and7 says:

i had the TV on mute and was just glancing at the screen every so often. I was quite surprised to look up and see that. It cracked me up. I’m assuming Gary and Keith pretended they didn’t see anything though.

        • dboy0308 says:

yeaah they didn’t do anything… I would not have been able to contain myself

  7. MetsFanInVegas says:

Now we have Church & M. Anderson colliding into each other, I hope they’re okay but they were both taken out of the game

  8. Airfeet says:

what channel is the game on????

  9. nmigliore says:

    CW 11

    The Valentin thing was hilarious..

  10. Wayneo says:

Is losing Delgado really that bad?

  11. TilMetsDoUsPart says:

Delgado would’ve done terribly this year anyways. That wrist injury would’ve sapped his pop. I’d rather see him out and give that Abreu guy a looksie.

    • The Glider says:

You know, we’re not exactly in “rebuilding” mode. We’re trying to win a World Series championship. And you want to try and do it with Michel Abreu as our full time first baseman?

  12. Anyone see the 2 children fighting in the stadium. Ultimate fighting now on CW 11, with keith and gary now announces

  13. nmigliore says:

on a side note, anyone see those kids fighting? another great laugh i had at that.. especially with the reactions of keith h/gary c. .. glad to see them back cant wait until the season starts

  14. nmigliore says:

haha yeah.. pretty interesting off-field things happening in this game

    • zabado says:

If Delgado is disabled, what about the concept of signing Bonds to play 1B. I don’t know that he would/could, but he is an offensive force, a gifted athelete, and a lefty.

      • domosnacks5 says:

        just shut up.

      • domosnacks5 says:

If we got that juiced up lying sack of garbage I would be comfortable in saying I would not pay a cent for a seat at a game this year, nor that for a piece of any apparel (that’s fine though since I’ve already spent way too much on gear up until now). Hell would freeze over before Barry Bonds would ever be seen in a Mets uniform, so just get that awful awful awful awful completely ridiculous/idiotic idea out of your head.

        • BKphan says:

Because it was OK to pay for a seat / piece of apparel when Lo Duca was on the team and the Mets knew he had been juicing?

        • VCarver says:

AFAIK, the Mets had no idea Loduca had juiced when he was a Dodger. How would they?

      • ae41h says:

you know i highly doubt bonds would do that, but its not a bad idea. He definitley still can be a force

        • domosnacks5 says:

How can you say that’s not a bad idea? It’s a miserably bad idea. The last thing we need is a clubhouse cancer like him.

        • VCarver says:

          I agree with domosnacks.

They should just try out Abreu at first if Delgado is out for any extended period of time.

  15. The Glider says:

I was afraid of this. Delgado is on the serious down side of his career now.

Yo Omar, get to it. Bring us back Xavier Nady or some other worthy Plan B for first base.

  16. squad says:

    Found this on another board:

Ok, bringing back my crazy idea.

Sosa has looked very good. Parnell, Rustich, Kunz, and Smith are all good looking young arms. Wise has looked solid. We also have this kid Register. And if Sanchez shows he is back, well, we’ll have a glut of relievers.

If for some reason Delgado is out for an extended amount of time (or even Church after this collision), we deal Heilman for Inge?

Inge can play all OF positions and both corners on the IF. He could even be the emergency 3rd catcher. If Alou or Delgado went down, he could replace either. If we’re lucky and every stays healthy, he could get 3-4 days a week spelling Alou, Church, and Delgado. Then, next season he could slide into LF if FMart isn’t ready. If FMart is ready, we could sign a Ben Broussard type to platoon with Inge att 1B.

    Thoughts?

    • domosnacks5 says:

I’ve never really liked Inge much. The Tigers DO need bullpen help with Rodney apparently hurt and Zumaya out til June/July. They would be a reasonable trade partner, especially with our plethora of pitchers in the pen, but I think we are going to really need most/all of those guys, and I would hate to give up a few of them for a guy who hits .235 like Inge. Schneider is enough in our lineup, we don’t need the 7-8-9 hitters hitting a collective .190 all season.

    • Necciai27 says:

As a Tiger fan as well as a Mets fan, you do NOT want to see Brandon Inge playing first base. He has a nice glove, is a good emergency catcher; really a Gold Glove caliber fielder, but he swings at everything. If some pitcher leaves a fastball or even a curve out over the plate, you can kiss it goodbye. He can KINDA hit outside pitches too, but anything in on his hands and you might as well ring him up for a strikeout or weak groundout before the pitcher has even thrown a second pitch (although as a result, he gets hit on the hands a lot when some guy with sub par control tries to jam him).

    • metsin080910 says:

I’d rather have Bonds than Inge. Bonds can also play both corner outfield positions.

  17. domosnacks5 says:

I know it’s real early and we don’t want to jump to unnecessary measures but I’ve thought all offseason that we are going to need another righty bat with pop that can play 1b/of. Nady is the man we need. Given the recent developments, we should try to grab him while we can before Alou/Delgado gets seriously injured and Pittsburgh can ask for a king’s ransom for Nady.

Given that we’re trying to win a championship this year, I’d really consider doing a Niese, Pagan, and Register type deal for Nady. Anyone think that this could possibly be accepted?

    • squad says:

I think that’s too much for Nady. He’s somewhat glorified by NY fans for his short time here. No way I am dealing Niese unless it’s in a package for an impact player.

      • domosnacks5 says:

I was figuring it might be a bit too much, but he was a very solid player last year as well. I’m not too familiar with the rest of the prospects we have outside of F-Mart, Niese, Kunz, Rustich, etc etc etc., but if something could be done without severely crippling our minor league system (or what’s left of it), I’d be all for it.

  18. 5and7 says:

    this game is so boring.

  19. cbusmetsfan says:

What about signing that Shawn Green guy to play 1st/OF. I hear he is available

  20. kkwik22 says:

    Shawn Green retired…
Matt wise isn’t on youtube Gary Choen you liar.

  21. racemccloud says:

    Let’s recap:
    Delgado – MRI
    Church – Concussion
    Anderson – Chest contusion
    Beltran – Hasn’t played yet
    Castillo – Hasn’t played yet
Alou – He’s Moises Alou. He’ll be hurt in a week.
El Duque – See Moises Alou.

I know it’s only spring, but this is what happens when most of your starting line up is on the other side of 30. Not looking great at the moment.

  22. mhochman says:

Ahhh, the first of march. Let the DOOM and GLOOM Begin!, I love being a Mets Fan.

  23. VCarver says:

If Delgado is out with an injury, I advocate using Abreu at first and see how that works. If not, then I wouldn’t be adverse in seeing if Green can be coaxed back to play first base.

  24. MudvilleNine says:

If Delgado is out for the year, then a firstbaseman and not a 1B/OF would be needed. I would think a trade for Jeff Kent to play first, in his last year of his contract with the Dodgers, might be viable. Being in his last year and the Dodgers already having someone to play second for them, he might come cheaply. Maybe even for everybody’s trading boy Gotay, and a low level minor leaguer. He’s still a decent hitter with pop and we’d only have to have him for this year.

    • domosnacks5 says:

I don’t think that they would want Gotay. They have a 2B in the wings in Delwyn Young who Larry Bowa is very, very impressed with. Kent would make sense as the Dodgers are pretty high on Young who was an OFer but with the acquisition of Andruw Jones makes him unusable in the OF, so they are converting him to a 2nd baseman this spring. If we can do the deal, I would be for it, but Kent is another guy like Bonds, a bit of a clubhouse cancer.

  25. metsin080910 says:

You are all acting like this is a major injury, he said his hip was bothering him so he went to get an MRI. It’s not like he’s going to be out the entire season. (knock, knock, knock)

  26. gottabeliev4evr says:

How ’bout we swap uniforms w/ U. Michigan?

  27. Don says:

i’ve been saying it for months and months, and only got laughter n reply. The mets should take advantage of the two firstbaseman situation in Washington. Nick Johnson could have been had. Even if Delgado is “healthy”, he is going to hit .250, miss anything on the inside of the plate, or ground into the shift over and over and over and over.

    nick johnson>delgado in 2008.

    • MudvilleNine says:

But Nick Johnson is their firstbaseman, they’re moving Young. They’ve said this many times. I would like him but getting him is almost impossible. Whoever we get will have to come cheap if its a trade.

  28. Sinestro says:

Dan Johnson in Oakland is one guy that can be had who has OBP skills and some power. Even though it doesn’t appear this is a serious injury, it does highlight the ongoing need for an adequate backup for Delgado. Hell, Johnson could play next year if we miss out on Teixeira and Dunn.

  29. Mets Fan In Florida says:

    NADY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. bigNJ says:

church is out 2 weeks delgado is day to day
