postGame: Mets 3, Braves 2
By Ted Berg - Mar 3, 2008 4:02 pm

The Mets beat the Braves, 3-2, on a walk-off hit in the bottom of the 10th inning in Grapefruit League action from Port St. Lucie this afternoon. Teenage shortstop Ruben Tejada plated the final run with a double to the gap that scored a hustling Michel Abreu on a close play at home plate.

Mike Pelfrey started the game for the Mets, throwing three scoreless innings and allowing two hits without walking or striking out any batters. Billy Wagner allowed one earned run in one inning relieving Pelfrey. Nelson Figueroa followed with two shutout frames. Jason Vargas threw a scoreless seventh, Carlos Muniz allowed an unearned run in the eighth, Ricardo Rincon struck out two in a scoreless ninth, then Ivan Maldonado earned the win with a scoreless inning of his own.

Ramon Castro led the Mets offense with two hits, including a rare stand-up triple, and an RBI.

…as a mets fan, you’ve got to be happy about the way Pelfrey looked today, especially considering El Duque’s assorted injuries…

Pelfrey smells El Duque’s spot on the roster and is going all out to win it, persoanlly I hope he does

    • mza4eva says:

Come on, the real story of the Day is Castro’s Triple

      • m00kie says:

funny thing is, andruw jones had that ball every time .. we’re going to really like not having him out there I think!

        • itsmetsforme says:

Ted, what’s going on? Do you have Matthew Cerrone in your trunk? I thought SNY would be a little more subtle in their takeover, lol.
Or maybe there’s more to the Penny-Cerrone feud?
I for one, welcome our new overlords.

        • gipper913 says:

LOL…I was thinking the same thing…..Ted Berg??!The lame psuedo-”Blogger” from SNY??? On our Metsblog? It’s the dawn of a new and mildly disturbing day…..

    • Nate W. says:

one that same idea, its seems that Nelson Figueroa is getting a better shot at the 5th spot than Vargas or Sosa who have yet to be given a 2 inning outing.

  2. NickA33 says:

Pelfrey’s making a very strong case for that #5 spot. I see no reason why they shouldn’t put him there and just let him “throw” as he likes to put it.

I have respect for El Duque but he’s too often injured and much less reliable now a days.

My concern is what we’re going to do for BP help and the lack of depth in our rotation. Loshe now states he’ll settle for a 1 yr contract and he’d be a great addition but if we did that, Pelfrey wouldn’t get the nod at 5, it’d be Loshe. Either way, I think it’s a smart sign.

I love what Pelfrey’s doing though, the kid’s doing great this ST.

    • Xavier22 says:

Yeah, but Pelfry did great during ST last year too and look how that turned out.

True, he has one more year of experience under his belt, but if El Duque can get his aches and pains under control, what’s wrong with having him in the 5th spot and Pelfry starting off in AAA? It certainly wouldn’t hurt for him to have an opportunity to improve his pitching further under less scrutiny and warmer weather.

      • mikey_FF says:

I don’t think he’ll have those aches and pains under control for the start of the season. That’s the whole thing. If he’s not ready, which he most likely won’t be, and Pelf starts out the season pitching well … well then see ya El Duque. He’s on call if that’s the case.

  3. So I am assuming the final score was 3-2?

  4. chickenfingerandfries says:

Jose Valentin was caught on camera in the dugout during staurdays game. Go to youtube and type in Jose Valentin BJ Gesture

    • CaseStreet says:

Yeah, my aunt was waiting to see Valentin cuz she loves him. As soon as he comes on we were like whoa.

  5. gbaked says:

how is Abreu looking? I see his name on here alot.

I know he is older, but is he a viable option for 1b?

    • Nate W. says:

He looks like he would make a great offensive tackle.

      • pedro4545 says:

Let’s hope Woody Johnson doesn’t watch any games then or he’ll give him a $25 mil contract.

      • pedro4545 says:

Let’s hope Woody Johnson doesn’t watch any games then or he’ll give him a $25 mil contract.

    • altru426 says:

I like how Pelfrey is looking. 6 ground ball outs to 3 fly ball outs is what he should be doing. I hope he can keep it up. I am nervous about El Duque and I don’t like his injuries. I’d rather sign Lohse, let Pelfrey start in AAA, and move Duque to the bullpen. But who knows what is going to happen.

Abreu is interesting. He is having a decent spring and provides a solid back up at 1st base. After Delgado leaves I would personally like to see Nick Evans take over, being a young, franchise developed player. But he is probably going to start in AA and is like 2 years away. So I don’t know what they want to do.

It is going to be an interesting spring for sure.

  6. brucemagic2007 says:

I don’t even think it should be a question about Pelfrey getting the # 5 spot. I know he started rough last season but if I remember correctly he had some very strong starts in Aug/Sept. And why not just start him to begin the season, he’s going to be in that spot at some point, if El Duque is awake, chances are he’s getting hurt

    • Nate W. says:

The only way he doesnt start the year as the #5 starter is if Figeuroa or Vargas pitches lights out and the Mets dont want to lose them. But the way Pelfrey is pitching now, the fact that he has options isnt going to mean a thing.

    • krumbledkookie says:

I’m with you. If this is my team, #5 is Pelfrey’s to lose, and Duque, if healthy, starts in the pen. Pelfrey’s proven he can pitch in the minors, there’s not a whole lot left for him to do there. It’s time to see whether or not he can cut it as a solid major league starter. Personally, I think he’s ready to thrive.

  7. CaseStreet says:

I thought they don’t need a 5th starter until end of April. You’d think Duque would have to be ready by then. I think the Mets would rather he improve his secondary pitches before calling him up again.

    • Nate W. says:

they’ll need one on April 12th, and from there on.

    • mackey_sassers_arm says:

they will need the 5th spot the second week of the season. they play 6 consecutive games with the phills and brewers. gonna need a 5th starter then.

  8. pedro4545 says:

Ok so Michel Abreu has no relation to Bobby….any relation between this Tejada and Mr. HGH?

  9. ravi3 says:

Looks like Gotay’s injury is worse than they thought…He is getting a CT scan, and may have a fracture

  10. s-mets says:

Don’t get me wrong, i really feel pelfrey is making strides this year. Plus, i think he is gaining confidence in himself due to the fact that the mets didn’t trade him in the offeseason and look at him as a valuable part of the rotation.

However, he was lights out last year in spring training…I hope he takes his potential onto the field this year as a starter. becuase it is looking more and more like he is going to be the 5th starter with El Duque breaking down.

  11. gowrightgo says:

Niice outing by Pelf. Its still Duques job to lose. too bad he cant remain healthy. He may lose the job if he is not unhealthy.

Another two weeks and sign lohse to a 2 way contract where he is capable of getting one salary in AAA and one for the bigs. His options must be running out as he is now entertaining a 1 yr deal. WHy not make it a Chan Ho type deal where he gets a minor league deal with a mL salary for ML time and an agreement that the first callup from AAA for a starter will be him

  12. sincekindergarten says:

I couldn’t believe that Abreu beat the throw to the plate in the bottom of the 11th, seeing that he had just made it to third when the ball came to the cutoff man. But, the double-clutch by the cutoof man allowed Abreu to just beat the throw. I had to see the play several times, but as the catcher was tagging Abreu, Abreu’s lead foot was on the plate. It may be spring training for the umpires too, but that was a great call.

  13. foul bunt strikeout says:

I am happy about pelf’s spring thus far abd hope he can’t carry it into real games if El Duque is still hobbled by injuries.

I know its ST but I’d like to see some offense…namely some supplied our starters when they are in the games.

I am not crazed about this now but itd be nice to see home hitting in 2 weeks when players are nearing the end of ST.

    • Nate W. says:

but the starters are never in the game…

at this rate Castro is going to be worn out by opening day.

I’m not at all surprised how these games have gone. The Mets lineup full of AAA players struggles against big league pitchers, then scores late against A ball pitchers.

  14. kandiman says:

Rotoworld is reporting that although Pelfrey threw 3 scoreless innings he didn’t show much today and had no strikeouts. Sometimes you can’t just look at the final numbers for the whole story of how a guy looks (especially in ST). I don’t think we should get all worked up about Pelfrey, if he makes the team he will still show in the first month that he has a LONNNNG way to go.

    • Nate W. says:

word from people watching was that he was throwing a hard sinker getting ground balls. Thats exactly how he should be most effective…

      • Santanaman says:

Correct Nate….ground balls conserve your pitch count. Rotoworld can kiss my a**.

Great for Pelfry, great for the Mets and great for us. Strikeouts are not the key indicator in a pitchers line.

Pelfry will be a Webb type pitcher in the next three years.

Yes! Very good, I’m happy with the day.

      • Cactus says:

Deja vu to one year ago…very few K’s in spring, effective getting grounders.

If he does not strike people out, he can’t be effective as a major leaguer when the games count. Period.

We already saw this last year.

        • m00kie says:

          period nothing.

saying things like “it’s that simple”, “bottom line”, and “period” really doesn’t strengthen an argument.

ain’t no two ways about it

          ;)

        • KinersKornerman says:

You are correct. End of story.

        • Cactus says:

there isn’t an argument to be had. nothing has changed, he’s still not striking guys out, so he’s still not major league ready. we already saw it last year. he needs to refine his offspeed pitches first. period. paragraph.

    • shea_guevara says:

I didn’t have a chance to see the game, but I wonder if anyone at Rotoworld did, either.

I said this on another thread, but Chien Ming Wang is a sinker baller, too. Every year, people worry about his low strikeout rate, and every year it doesn’t seem to make a difference.

Not saying Pelfrey’s destined for greatness, but I don’t think a lack of K’s is a bad thing if he’s going to be a pitcher in the Wang mold. And in any case, the Mets will be looking at him to be a #5 starter, not an ace. You could probably do a lot worse than Pelfrey in that slot.

      • pedro4545 says:

Great point….Pelfrey hopefully can emerge as a Chien-Ming Wang type pitcher at some point. Low strikeout rate, but able to get people out and keep the team in every game. I’m definitely rooting for Pelf to win the number 5 spot in the rotation this year and hopefully get off to a better start than last season. I think a win in one of his first starts would do wonders for his confidence. I’d personally take Pelfrey’s heavy sinker over El Duque’s slow junk, but that’s just me.

      • Cactus says:

wang is a severe outlier, and even so he’s not really that great. and pelfrey doesn’t have anything close to his control.

like almost all other pitchers, pelfrey needs to strike guys out to be successful.

    • stickguy says:

What, ROtoworld has a super scout with a radar gun at every ST game? They probably looked at the line, so no Ks, and deemed it a failure!

The pbyP on the site here made it would like he was mowing them down.

Having nothing would be throwing meatballs that were crushed but caught, goin 2-0 on every hitter and getting away with it, etc.

At this point of ST, he is doing exactly what he should be. THrowing nice and easy, getting his mechanics down, and pounding the strike zone (and not throwing fat BP FBs like some of the others!)

The rest test will be a couple of starts down the road when he stretches out to 6 or so innings, and faces more of a ML lineup.

    • m00kie says:

no strikeouts because they were grounding out on the 2nd pitch. That’s better than K’s… stats don’t show you everything!

    • hyperion4 says:

I also would like Pelfrey to ring up a few more Ks, but rotoworld is wrong about him not showing much. He broke several bats and got several weak ground balls.

  15. Number41 says:

    Ramon hit a triple?
What’d that take, like, 15 minutes?

    • pedro4545 says:

Hahaha…Speaking of triples, MLB 2K8 is out today with Jose on the cover, I’m gonna go pick that up right after I get out of this class.

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

wait 1 more day and get the show 08 (unless you dont have ps3) such a better game, sadly ryan howard is on the cover though.

        • pedro4545 says:

I have xbox360…I think its the better system, but the one major thing PS3 has over it is The Show. 2k8 has been improving though. I’m still pissed about MVP baseball no longer being made. By far the best baseball game ever.

  16. Metsfan980 says:

I don’t understand why Ruben Tejada’s in camp, but it was nice to see him hit potential major league pitching.

By the way, remember his name. He’s the next Mets top prospect.

    • Another Matt says:

Probably because the club wanted to see him hit potential major league pitching.

He mashed in the Venezuela summer league last year after holding his own in the Gulf Coast league… and he’s only 17. A little taste of what might be to come can only do him good.

      • hyperion4 says:

He looked very good in the field. Really took charge on a couple of plays.

        • stickguy says:

If he can handle 2B in an a couple of years (or whenever Castillo breks down), I love him.

      • Metsfan980 says:

He’s so young though, and won’t be playing in games for a while (I suspect he starts the season in a short season league).

I’m not complaining, Tejada quickly became one of my favorite players after signing with the Mets and the posting a .400+ OBP in the GCL.

It’s just odd… but then again, half of the Mets major league team is injured… lol

  17. Cactus says:

I’d rather Pelfrey stinks so they go out and sign Kyle Lohse. We all know Pelfrey can pitch in the spring. But his stuff still doesn’t cut it, as his offspeed stuff still looks like it needs a lot of work, and I’d rather he get that work at the AAA level.

    • m00kie says:

did you see him pitch in september?

      • Cactus says:

yea, I saw it. he threw one very good game against the braves, the rest of the time he was throwing his garbage slider and telegraphed changeup and walking people left and right, like usual. i certainly didn’t forget his 5 walk 6 run slop outing against the nationals the last week of the season, either.

        final september line for pelfrey:

        24 IP, 28 H, 2 HR, 15 BB, 18 K, 4.88 ERA.

that’s supposed to convince me he should get the ball every 5th day?

        • m00kie says:

I guess the point is, the main thing he lacked was confidence to throw strikes (hence the walks), confidence he seemed to have gained.

You still haven’t explained how he’s supposed to get strikeouts when guys are sawing off their bats on the second pitch.

People have pointed to heilman’s one hitter for years afterwards as (dubious) evidence he can pitch at the big leagues .. well I’ll use the Braves game in a similar fashion, except we’re looking at a young pitcher here, who is ready to break out… many of us see it, you are using stats to say it’s not possible. Maybe we’re just being “homers” or whatever stat guys love to say about “fans” but you can say “he’ll never be good” and we can say “maybe he’ll be good”

Bottom line ;) : the roto comment that he had a bad outing because he didn’t K anyone was clearly a load of crap, if you watched his performance yesterday. That gives us hope. You want to use stats to douse the hope? Fine.

    • helicopter ben johnson says:

orrrrr, he can improve and be effective as a 5 now, as he was (mostly) in sept

  18. Tim says:

Can we stop with the “walk-off” this or that ?!? it’s over done and not very clever.

  19. gomets6091 says:

Is it just me, or does it seem like this Abreu kid has been involved in every key moment so far this Spring Training? I know that statistically speaking, “clutchness” doesn’t exist, especially for Spring Training, but I do think certain people just have a tendency to rise to the occasion, and maybe Abreu is one of them. At the very least he has to be turning some heads down there.

    • CitizenSnips says:

He’s turning heads alright. People are turning away every time he botches a play at first, which is becoming quite commonplace.

      • gomets6091 says:

didn’t realize that. I live in DC and don’t get SNY, so all I know about Spring Training is what I read on here.

  20. the_other_matt says:

“Ramon Castro led the Mets offense with two hits, including a rare stand-up triple, and an RBI.”

I heard his legs were on 3rd while his head was still on second. GOo Cabeza Grande!!

  21. Tim says:

The Force is strong with young Ramon.

  22. CaseStreet says:

    Did anyone else get hurt?

  23. mrswright14 says:

michel ran so slow. It was really funny but it was fast enough to get us the w and thats all that matters.

  24. nmigliore says:

Glad to see Pelfrey get 3 innings instead of 2.. you can tell Willy/Rick are leaning towards him (and at this point they have no other choice with Hernandez really behind everybody) .. I only caught the 5 inning and above, Muniz didn’t really pitch well.. And it looked like Abreu was really out on the play-at-the-plate, but whatever haha

Rincon looked very good I thought, especially with the last batter he faced; he consistently painted the outside corner .. Wouldn’t mind seeing him in the BP, especially if the Mets deal Sosa/Schoewenweis

    • Volume11 says:

Nah, Ole’ Sid said the same thing and they replayed it from 3 or 4 different angles and he looked safe. He only appeared to be out in the initial live play from behind. On the flip view it looked like he was safe.

  25. andyglass1 says:

seen several comments in response to the rumor about making Scho and/or Sosa available………. based on last year’s results who would want to trade for Scho at $7.0m ? Maybe he was pitching hurt most of the year but it’s alot of money. In all likelihood a large amount of that salary would have to be eaten to move him.

I thought Sosa was our most reliable starter for a 6 week stretch early on. Didnt he start out 6-1 or 7-2 before reverting to craptitude in the BP ? I wouldnt be in a hurry to give up Sosa as he can effectively start and relieve. If he becomes consistent he could be valuable.
