preGame: Mets vs. Braves
By Ted Berg - Mar 3, 2008 12:55 pm

Mike Pelfrey will make his second start of the spring today against the Braves in Port St. Lucie.

The game will air live at 1 pm on SNY and online at MLB.tv.

Billy Wagner and Aaron Heilman, among others, will relieve Pelfrey. Jo-Jo Reyes will start for the Braves.

…reyes strikes me as the braves’ left-handed answer to pelfrey: a young guy with success in the minors who wasn’t quite able to put it together in the big leagues last season…

Burkhardt doing the play-by-play with Ronnie as analyst. Gary getting some rest!

  2. gipper913 says:

    *with Ronnie AND Keith

  3. m00kie says:

reyes looked good on that first ground ball!! (thank jah!)

  4. m00kie says:

who says you need a first baseman?? ugh.

  5. m00kie says:

maybe a little play by play today .. may not last all game:

pelfrey pitching, top of the first:

    johnson – groundball to short
escobar – single to right center

error on abreu (first base) on pickup move, escobar to second

    Schafer – flyball to left
    Thorman – flyball to right

pelfrey looks good, not many pitches thrown.

  6. m00kie says:

jo-jo reyes pitching, bottom of first:

jose reyes: K looking at an outside corner fastball on a 2-2 count. (he appeared to be looking for a breaking ball and was fooled..)

    a.hernandez: ground ball to second

    wright: flyball rf

  7. m00kie says:

    wow my own thread.

    ;)

    • backinbusiness says:

i appreciate it mookie, was in a meeting and your recap to this point was helpful!

    • mikey_FF says:

Thanks mookie … keep up the good work!

    • jamie says:

lol…yep, all yours for as long as you can do it!

      • Saltzy23 says:

You guys realize that you can use one MLB.com account with whoever you want, at the same time right? My buddy and I have shared an account for 5 years. Its like $7.50 each to hear every game the whole year.

  8. m00kie says:

top of the second, pelfrey pitching:

lopez: out so quick I missed it.. “an easy groundball to the left side”
    diaz: groundball to third
    anderson: groundball to short

pelfreys’ throwing strikes and they’re pounding them into the ground. We don’t need no stinkin el duque!! (I know I know, last spring….)

  9. mr.gee21 says:

Pelf is a year older, and a year more experienced than in last Spring.

El Duque is just a year older…

  10. CitizenSnips says:

Haha wow that guy hit the wall hard. Nice job, Castro.

  11. m00kie says:

    bottom of second, reyes pitching,

    alou: flyball to rf
pagan: single to left after a 8-9 pitch AB .. nice hitting
castro: hammered the ball to center.. almost out , off the top of the wall over the leaping outfielder. Standup triple — anyone else would have had an inside the parker. pagan, running on the play, scores from first easily.
martinez: hammered the ball but right at the first baseman
    abreu: groundball to second

    mets up 1-0

    • gem779 says:

I’m really liking Pagan. I was happy when we got him but what’s the deal with his options? If he starts in the majors he can’t be sent down?? is that it..?

  12. gipper913 says:

Man, Pelf looks good today. Sawing off bats left and right….Leiter-esque.

  13. m00kie says:

top 3rd: pelfrey still pitching, looking confident and strong

Keith says “he’s throwing terrific” and he and burkhardt are going on and on about how hard pelf is throwing.

prado: flyball to right on 1 pitch
pena: broken bat groundball, infield single, hernandez couldn’t quite make the play
johnson: ground ball to second, runner advances on the play
escobar: weak groundball to third after a 3-0 count, then on 3-1

    excellent outing from pelfrey!

    wagner pitching next inning

  14. huge_mets_fan11 says:

Good News on Pelf, anybody know what the rotation is going to be this weekend? I am going down to see them for a couple of games.

  15. m00kie says:

    bottom of third acosta pitching:

cancel: double to left center gap
reyes: rbi single up the middle
hernandez: weak groundball to first, reyes goes to second

bad pickoff throw to second, reyes to third

    wright: walk
    alou: double play
    pfffft

    • huge_mets_fan11 says:

Damn Alou, although I am not worried about Alou, he had a bad spring training last year and besides the injury, he did fine.

  16. 5and7 says:

So Wagner has no idea how to keep runners close to first, huh?

  17. m00kie says:

    top 4th: wagner pitching:

    Schafer: bloop single to left
    thorman: K
lopez: popup to short, in shallow left
    shafer steals second
diaz: rbi single up the middle, squeaked by wagner, ball not hit hard..
diaz steals second (he would have been long out with a good throw)
anderson: groundball to second, I hope billy didn’t hurt himself diving for it ;)

  18. miker94 says:

I am just not convinced that wagner should even be on this team. not just based on that last inning, but he only has one pitch that he can throw for a strike and everyone knows it. so they all sit dead red and drill his extremely flat, non moving fastball. i’ve never watched him pitch and not been terrified. i can see him blowing a LOT of saves this year.

    • m00kie says:

he’s definitely better when he gets that slider across for a strike. I didn’t notice any curve balls today, but I was a little distracted by a coworker (have to keep up appearances here ;)

    • Mister Koo says:

The league hit .216 against him last year. I wouldn’t call that sitting dead red and drilling his flat non moving fastball. If it were that simple, they’d be hitting a lot higher than .216.

    • astoriametsfan72 says:

yada yada yada…whining about the best closer in the league on March 3rd? Get out much?

    • darkstar73 says:

what exactly are you talking about? He was easily our best reliever last year and the year before, and one of the best in the NL. Who cares how you “feel”, the guy has the stats to back it up. Is he the best? No, but he’s pretty damn good and more of a sure thing then any guy who could possibly replace him.

  19. m00kie says:

bottom 4th: boyer pitching (another local georgia boy ugh, I’m sure he’ll be great)

    pagan: ground ball to second
castro: reaches on error on groundball to second
martinez: another ball scorched at thorman, who makes a diving stop and gets the 3 (unassisted) throw to second double play

  20. m00kie says:

    top of 5th: figueroa pitching

prado: high flyball to left field, may have been in foul territory
pena: missed it, he got out :)
    hernandez: single to left
    lillibridge: backwards K

    braves: 1 mets: 2

  21. m00kie says:

    bottom 5th boyer still pitching:

    abreu: flyball to rf
    cancel: K
    reyes: groundball to short

the PA guy didn’t get the memo & played josejosejose w/ a 2-2 count, only to see reyes ground out on the next pitch

    • jamie says:

re the chant: seriously, can one of the (seemingly many) lawyers out there draft an injunction or something?

  22. gipper913 says:

The canned Jose chant was really grating in that situation.

  23. m00kie says:

    top 6th figueroa still in:

schafer: basehit by the diving ss (tejada, not that one, not reyes ;)
    thorman: flyball to cf
wild pitch advances schafer to second
lopez: ground ball to short, schafer goes to third
    diaz: weak groundball to 3rd

figuera looked good, fooling hitters with his offspeed/breaking stuff
    vargas pitches next (uh-oh)

  24. m00kie says:

    bottom 6th morton pitching:

    hernandez: walk after down 0-2
    wright: got out missed it
hernandez to second on wild pitch
carrera (playing lf): groundball to short, hernandez to third
    pagan: backwards k

pelfrey gave an interview during that half inning….his confidence is certainly improved, he’s more comfortable and I’ve really got a good feeling about this kid, this season.

  25. m00kie says:

    top 7th, vargas pitching:

anderson: bunt out to first base, tagged
    prado: pop to center
    pena: groundball to short

    nice quick work by vargas

  26. m00kie says:

    bottom 7th, morton still in:

    castro: walk on 4 pitches
martinez: single –finally got one through the hole!
abreu: double play 6-4-3, castro to third
molina: groundball to third .. robbed of a double down the line by a nice play

    still 2-1 mets

wise was interviewed and said he’s definitely not a headcase ;)

  27. m00kie says:

top 8th (this game is cruising, and they’ve only been doing like 1 commercial between..I’m going to have to do some work today after all!!) muniz pitching for the first time this spring

hernandez: hammered a double down the line
lillibridge: tried to bunt got to 0-2, then strikeout, passed ball on a lazy catcher play, lillibridge safe at first, hernandez goes to third
schafer: sac fly to left, 2-2 ballgame
flowers: high popup behind third, ss catches, lillibridge didn’t realize there were only 1 out, was already to third when the ball was caught, so we had a double play.

before the inning, they showed a girl sleeping out on the berm, and keith says “you know what, I’ll be back .. I’m going to take a nap out there on the berm” lol always the ladies man!

    • Another Matt says:

Whoops! That’s the kind of goof little league coaches get all hot under the collar about ;)

  28. m00kie says:

bottom 8th lillibridge’s face is still red, desalvo is pitching

    tejada: flyball to rf
    hernandez: weak groundball to first
    molina: K

does anyone else feel like we really shouldn’t have a catcher named molina? And yeah, I know he’s not related.

  29. m00kie says:

top 9th: rincon pitching (when / how did we get this guy?)

sammons: groundball to short on first pitch
jones: swinging k on a nice 0-2 breaking ball
blanco: had him 0-2, 3 straight very close balls, then a big cut swinging K

    • JDuelz (Athens, GA) says:

Wasn’t Rincon very effective with his tenure in Oakland?

    • Another Matt says:

      We signed him to a minor-league contract / non-roster invite in mid-January.

He’s missed a lot of time to injury.

  30. m00kie says:

    bottom 9th still desalvo:

carrera: swinging bunt to third, out
    pagan: flyball to cf
    castro: flyball to cf

mets have someone waming up, braves have 3 pitchers left apparently, we’re onto extra spring innings!

  31. m00kie says:

    top 10th: maldonado

    prado: groundball to ss
pena: groundball to first, nice play by abreu
    hernandez: walk
lillibridge: fernando martinez made a great catch in right center (think shawn green flop territory ;)

    • backinbusiness says:

FMart really looked like he was trying for the walk off there.
He really, really looks like a ballplayer.

  32. m00kie says:

bottom 10th: rouwenhorst (bless you) pitching

martinez: swinging for the fences, skyed one to first base
    abreu: walk
murphy: swinging K – also swinging from his heels
tejada: double to the right centerfield gap

abreu wheeled around third wildly (sandy wanted to go home), double clutch by the relay man made the tag just late, nice slide from abreu scores the run!

    mets win mets win!!
    back to .500

well pitched game, nice hustle.. back to work :/

  33. latinlawyer says:

Thanks Mook! That play by play saved my workday!!!

    METS win!!!!

  34. Nate W. says:

Thanks m00k, I missed the game working today, but feel like I was here the whole time now that I’ve read through…
