Now waiting for the newest addition to the DL…

    THM, 0-5

  3. lonman1129 says:

Angel Pagan is hitting the cover off the ball. Unless they bring in a backup first baseman/RF/righty bat I think he will win the last spot on the bench. He is a switch hitter who can play all 3 OF spots.

  4. gem779 says:

The Angel Pagan story continues…. I love this guy!

    • Ceetar says:

Yeah, I liked him with the Cubs last year, and so far he seems good. He’ll be that nice extra backup outfielder. Of course, David Newhan and Ben Johnson looked good last spring..

      • gem779 says:

yea, I liked him with the Cubs last year and am just glad this spring is hopefully helping him make the team. He just seems like a very versatile player.

      • SevenTrain says:

Yeah, David Newhan was great at hitting slow rollers to the second baseman — every freaking time.

    • sundaysection15 says:

i agree! i know its early but somebody should give him a first basemans glove! lol

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

its a good thing we didnt sign a back up 1st basemen this offseason ugh

  5. CaseStreet says:

Sosa is sand-bagging. He doesn’t want to get traded.

  6. mackey_sassers_arm says:

Why does Hanley Ramirez bat leadoff?

    • ravi3 says:

this season he is projected to bat #3…I’m guessing that Freddi wants to get him more ab’s?

    • metsftw says:

high OBP with speed…sure, you can bat him 3rd but no one’s gonna get on base in front of him so what’s the point eh

  7. BSMITTYFDNY says:

Pagan should make the big club the way he is playing.

  8. DaWrightStuff says:

I heard Maine got a new contract… what are the numbers?

    • ksuth says:

i don’t think they’re available yet…checked KFFL and google news:

The Mets have renewed John Maine’s contract. Maine, who made $391,000 last season and will be eligible for arbitration next winter, was blase about the renewal. “I just assume, I’m not even worried about it,” Maine said. “It’s still good money. I’ll be able to pay off my cell phone bill.”

  9. VCarver says:

I hope Pagan makes the big club. He’s still a homegrown Met and I always pull for them.

This Tejada is impressing too. Hope he plays this weekend so I can get to watch him on TV. For only 18, he’s doing a nice job as a fill-in.

  10. sincekindergarten says:

Agreed on Pagan making the trip to Shea. As for Sosa “sandbagging” so that he doesn’t get traded, no one wants to diminish their value, whether it be trade value or long relief value, in ST.

  11. johnnyrotton says:

LASTINGS 2-3 2 MORE RBI. .438 ON THE SPRING

FERNANDO MARTINEZ DOESNT HAVE HALF OF THE TOOLS MILLEDGE HAS.

MINAYA, AS ALWAYS, YOU SUCK BALLS

Do the names Butch Huskey and Darren Reed mean anything to you?

      • mrose says:

        ugh….your stupidity doesn’t even warrant these characters I’m typing…

lucky for you its a boring day at work…

I sure hope you are like a Yankees fan in disguise cause your a disgrace to this site

      • mackey_sassers_arm says:

How about Kevin Roberson and Mike Kincade?

    • Charlie says:

      troller.

    • sincekindergarten says:

Hey, feminine hygene product, when the season begins, then talk to us. And, not really until after the end of the season.

Martinez is how many years younger than Milledge? Four?

    • you realize Lastings could bat 1.000 with 510 rbi in spring training and it would all mean nothing come the end of the month when the games start to count

    • darkstar73 says:

dude, don’t you remember when you used to hate on Milledge? I mean, it wasn’t that long ago…but just because he’s gone doesn’t mean you have to hate on that fact. Of course, whoever would have left you would be hating on Omar for, but that’s the name of the game. It doesn’t matter who or what, you’ll find something to hate on.

      • CitizenSnips says:

Do fill me in on the types of things he said about Milledge before. I love flip-floppers.

  12. kowalski69 says:

take a look at the Phillies/Braves box score. Kendrick got lit UP.

    (hope this comes out right)

Philadelphia IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA
    Kendrick (L, 0-1) 2.2 9 7 7 1 2 0 12.71

  13. Azman426 says:

I was pretty sure Pagan was going to make the team anyway. Just looking at the position players, there is definitely room for him, especially at the beginning of the year when we possibly won’t need that fifth starter until the 2nd or 3rd week of the season.

The position players should consist of Jose Reyes, Luis Castillo, Carlos Beltran, David Wright, Carlos Delgado, Moises Alou, Brain Schneider, Ryan Church… which should be the ‘ideal” starting lineup.
The bench should include another 5 or 6 players, which should include Endy Chavez, Damion Easley, Ramon Castro and Marlon Anderson.
That should easily leave room on the bench for Pagan, and possibly one more.

  14. Constnza81V2.0 says:

It’s interesting that since the New Orleans Zephyrs and Binghamton Mets have started taking the field late last week, the Mets have finally started winning ST games.

It has, and will always be about pitching with this game and it’s good to see guys like Wise, Sosa and Feliciano holding down the fort. Tejada is also providing glimpses of something to be stoked about.

    • JDuelz (Athens, GA) says:

That being said, they always say that hitting is always behind in spring training, so… (Not to be Debbie Downer or anythin’… ;-))

  15. Kherubnym says:

Pagan should start the year in Triple A….and remain there unless dire circumstance occur. What he bat last year? .250?? If that…please, give me a break. He’s a nice reserve Outfielder to have stashed in the Minors, but please with this guy…Rajai Davis is the guy the Mets should go after. I want Davis regardless, but Marcus Thames is a real nice get….with the Dodgers and Tigers talking trade, what’s up with a little three way action?

DETROIT GETS – Juan Pierre, Scott Schoewenweis, Delwyn Young
DETROIT GIVES – Marcus Thames, Brandon Inge

DODGERS GET – Brandon Inge, Brian Stokes, Ben Johnson
DODGERS GIVE – Juan Pierre, Delwyn Young

METS GET – Marcus Thames, Yhancy Brazoban
METS GIVE – Scott Schoewenweis, Brian Stokes, Ben Johnson

    • Another Matt says:

He hit .264, seemingly mostly as a pinch hitter (148 AB in 71 games) – but a lot higher than Thames’ .242. Pagan’s OBP was higher also.

And why are you in such a hurry to give up effectively two pitchers for a guy who gave up 3 ER + 1 unearned in 5 outs in the majors last year? (and only pitched 18 innings in the minors). He only threw 5 innings in 2006, so he’s clearly got major injury issues, and you’re killing our pitching depth for him?

Bad trade man… very bad trade.

      • Kherubnym says:

Marcus Thames is the main get here, but Brazoban has strong sleeper potential. The bulk of the trade is salary driven, but Pagan vs. Thames it isn’t even close. Thames if you extrapolate his numbers over 500 at-bats it comes to like 46 homers or something like that…I didn’t do the math, but I remember reading something to that effect…Thames can play First Base and platoon with Church. I hate guys who have a low batting average, and Thames isn’t my first choice. I want Barry Bonds, but Thames is a great pick up…especially at the cost specified here…If we got Bonds, First Base doesn’t matter nearly as much…frigon Schnieder…how dare Omar??

        • JDuelz (Athens, GA) says:

Bonds? What the hell…? And at first base? Huh…?

        • Kherubnym says:

I just want Bonds. If he can play First, great, if not…it really doesn’t matter….

          1)SS – Jose Reyes
          2)2B – Luis Castillo
          3)3B – David Wright
          4)CF – Carlos Beltran
          5)LF – Barry Bonds
          6)RF – Moises Alou
          7)1B – Carlos Delgado
          8)C – Ramon Castro

Who are you gonna pitch to 3,4,5,6? Pick your poison…cause you’re gonna die…

        • ASod1975 says:

I hate Barry Bonds. I don’t want him anywhere near my favorite team. Great player, bad guy…Pass.

        • Kherubnym says:

Well, you make me a million times sicker than Bonds could ever make you…and if it’s between you or Bonds…I’ll take Bonds every time. Bonds = Certain Victory. THAT’S WHAT I WANT!!! THAT’S WHAT’S OWED TO US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SHAWN GREEN!?!? THEN THEY’RE GONNA TRADE AWAY LASTINGS MILLEDGE?!?! F….orget THAT!!!!!!! SIGN BONDS!!!!!!

        • ASod1975 says:

Are you really a Mets fan? Have you ever heard of the words “team chemistry?” And what has Bonds won in his career, ever? He had a great World Series against the Angels at the height of his steroid use but other than that was a perennial playoff choker. Look it up. And you don’t win baseball games by just putting together a video-game lineup. It’s won with pitching and defense and Bonds can’t play the field anymore, nor can he pitch. The Met’s acquisition of Santana did more for the team than signing Barroid would. Don’t know where you came from, but you should crawl back into the hole before making ridiculous posts.

        • metsftw says:

no such thing as team chemistry in baseball, so moot point.

        • ASod1975 says:

          Since when?

    • mackey_sassers_arm says:

Why not just have the dodgers send us Jonothan Broxton and James Loney too.

Mets package Show, Stokes, and Ben Johnson?? Come on man… be serious.

      • Kherubnym says:

As was mentioned, Brazoban’s worth isn’t nearly what you seem to think it is. He’s only pitched a handful of innings the past two years. The Dodgers get a Third Baseman, but more importantly perhaps in their eyes is the unloading of Juan Pierre’s contract. Detroit doesn’t want to pay Inge, and get a replacement outfielder for Thames in Pierre…who offers the club a different dynamic, and the guy gets hits…he’s won a Championship, and would make an unbelievable nine hitter for them….it gives them depth and options…They could use a lefty for the pen, and the addition of Delwyn Young somewhat off-sets the cost of Pierre and Schoewenweis….while providing depth….

Pierre makes 8 million this year, 10 million in ‘09 and ‘10, and then 8.5 in ‘11….for a total of 36.5

        Inge makes 6.2 million this year, 6.3 in ‘09, and 6.6 in ‘10…..for a total of 19.1

Schoewenweis makes 3.6 this and next year…

        3.6 + 8 = 11.6 + Delwyn Young…They’re a better team, add depth and youth.

The Dodgers save a total of 17.4 million over the duration of Pierre’s vs Inge’s contract….and that costs them Delwyn Young, and Brazoban…however, they get their Third Baseman, a middle reliever who could throw some spot innings, and Outfield depth in Johnson after having traded two Outfielders in the deal….

Mets get the platoon option/First Baseman they’re looking for, and while I don’t like losing Schoewenweis….Wise supposedly can get lefties out which is probably why Schoewenweis was being shopped to begin with….doesn’t really matter though…that idiot Randolph is still he to muck it all up…sooo…yeah…the only way I see him not being able to fudge it all up is if the Mets signed Bonds….Bonds = Randolph proof team. Mets make me sick if the don’t sign Bonds. HOW DON’T THEY SIGN BONDS!?!? DO THEY WANT TO WIN OR WHAT!?!? SIGN BARRY BONDS!!!!!! WHERE’S THE PLAYER’S UNION!?? HE HAD AN OPS OVER 1.000 LAST YEAR, HIT NEARLY 30 BOMBS, HAD A OBP CLOSE TO .500 AND NOBODY IN THE GAME TO THE DAY CONTRIBUTES TO THEIR TEAM WINNING MORE GAMES. SIGN BARRY BONDS!!!!!!

        • Kherubnym says:

Figure in a year Sheffield comes off the books for them….Pierre stays in Left, maybe they keep Jones and shift him to Right while making Magglio the full time DH….

          Potential 2009 Tigers line-up sans Sheffield -

          1)CF – Granderson
          2)2B – Polanco
          3)3B – Cabrera
          4)DH – Magglio
          5)1B – Guillen
          6)SS – Renterria
          7)C – Pudge
          8)RF – Jaque Jones?
          9)LF – Pierre

          still a rugged line-up….

    • ASod1975 says:

Brazoban has thrown a total of 6 2/3 innings in the last two years. The Mets have a similar pitcher on the staff already, his name is Ambiorix Burgos.

      • Kherubnym says:

Sorry man, I tried to reply to you three times, but this site is retarded and won’t let me….if this one goes through – I’ll summarize…

        Randolph stupid
        Burgos out of shape
I supported and still support Burgos trade
I said Bannister was better than Wang from Day 1, and he proved it last year…I still support the trade though.
Look at Burgos’ peripherals…Randolph real stupid
Can never have enough power arms….ever.

        • metsftw says:

bannister got lucky. his era will be very high this year.

        • ASod1975 says:

Now I definitely agree with you there. I think Bannister is a solid pitcher, but unspectacular. I don’t think he’ll be much more than a No. 4 or No. 5 starter over the long haul. He’s got a good idea out there, but just average to medicore stuff. At the time, the Mets had guys (Pelfrey, Humber, Guerra, etc.) that they were much higher on, leaving Bannister expendable. Burgos is a power arm who hasn’t panned out yet (hopefully he will when he returns).

    • oleosmirf says:

while your at why don’t we trade Robinson Cancel and Jason Vargas to the Pirates for Jason Bay.

  16. BSMITTYFDNY says:

I cant find anything about Maine signing a new contract anywhere. For how many years and for how much money? I hope its long term because he is a great 3rd starter and besides Santana next year he is all we have as a definite starter.

    • mackey_sassers_arm says:

If he is re-upped, it’s for one year. He is eligible for arbitration next year (09) and the two after that (i believe) and then free agent in 2012 (??) is that right?

      • darkstar73 says:

yup, he gets 3 years of arbitration, so ‘09, ‘10, and ‘11, he’ll be a free agent after the 2011 season.

  17. Philnym31 says:

According to Jon Heyman, the Mets are indeed looking to find a right-handed-hitting outfielder to platoon with Ryan Church.

I know Xavier Nady is a popular choice, but I tell you Matt Murton would not sound too bad to me at all.

    • ASod1975 says:

I wonder if the Cubs have any use for Schoeneweis or Sosa. I believe the Mets have guys in camp (Rincon, Register, Lugo, Stokes, Wise, Smith etc.) who could fill their roles. Murton would be a nice, youngish choice. Wonder if he’s ever played any first base in the minors.

    • LUNT101 says:

Murton is supposedly on the trading block. Would love to make a push for him.

  18. TurkWendell9999 says:

Are the mets still looking for their first preseason HR? (besides the Michigan game???)

    • cb32 says:

I don’t believe so. Didn’t Gotay hit one in the 9th the other day to make that game 5-4? Now that may be the only one but they got one. That was against the Cards I believe.

  19. mdemaio says:

Tejada has impressed me this spring…he’s only 18, but I’d trust him as a backup infielder more than I’d trust Hernandez, assuming Gotay is out and Valentin can’t make it back in time. He’s fundamentally solid, and he seems fearless…he plays like he belongs here. Very impressive presence in the field for an 18 year old.

    • oleosmirf says:

he’s 18 and probably never played a full professional season yet you want him to make the team over Jose Valentin, Anderson Hernandez or Ruben Gotay.

I think your a bit ahead of yourself.

      • ASod1975 says:

A more realistic scenario would be seeing this kid develop for the next two or three years as the future 2B when Castillo’s contract is done or his legs fall off, whichever happens first.

  20. Wright Stuff says:

Does anybody have more info on Tejada? Was he one of Manaya’s big Latin American signings? Is there anywhere that I can find this info?
