PSL: Gotay looks Bummed Out
By Matthew Cerrone - Mar 4, 2008 12:02 pm

…i walked back through the locker room a few minutes ago, and Ruben Gotay was sitting in front of his locker…nobody else was in the room…he looks so dejected…he was hunched over with a protective boot on his ankle, sifting through a small stack of fanmail…

…he looked up at me, and i said, “Damn, man, this sucks, huh?,” to which he slightly smiled and sheepishly said, “Yes.”…he said he expects to get yesterday’s MRI results tomorrow

…i feel bad for the kid…i mean, i hate to say this, but there is a realistic chance we never hear from him again…i mean, he’ll rehab, and by the time he works his way back, life will have moved on for the team…roster spots will have been filled…

…he’s a good hitter…not the best fielder…he could be a good player…hopefully he makes it back

not to be off topic, but is today’s game a 1pm start?

    • Peter says:

Yup, but they aren’t on the MLB audio schedule again . . .

      • ravi3 says:

its…I live close to my office, so I eat lunch at home..of course if its not an SNY game, I’m boned either way

  2. mrose says:

    lol
Matt, i love it…thats what shows your a regular guy and not the typical reporter
you go up to him and say “sucks huh?” lol

If it was brad lidge I wonder if you woulda kicked him in the knee! LOl

    keep it up

  3. napes22 says:

Somewhat sad, because this makes Gotay completely out of options.

Any update on the severity of Delgado’s hip?

  4. therealsince86 says:

I like Gotay, but truth be told he is an average hitter with little pop and no defense. He is #25 on most teams. It’s funny how we throw his name around in trades as a valuable piece when really he is no more valuable than Damon Easley would be, just younger with less pop.

    • MetsLv31 says:

I think that’s an undervalued view of Gotay. True his defense is average (at best) but his bat is better than average.

In 2007, in 190 ABs he had a .772 OPS. Now that’s nothing like Wright’s .962, but it isn’t like he’s A Hern at the plate. Plus he’s young and a switch-hitter, which adds value to his bat as well. To compare his OPS to the some of the other regulars here are some stats.

      Reyes: .775
Castillo: .742 (in 199 AB with Mets)
      Beltran: .878
      Alou: .916
      Delgado: .781

Now I’m not saying that OPS is the only valuable hitting stat, but it is important.

      • therealsince86 says:

But you have to look that many of those came in a PH role in which he was only seing RHP. If you stretch him out as an everyday player he does not do as well as we saw last season.

        • MetsLv31 says:

I’m not saying he deserves a starting job, but I like his bat off the bench. Being a PH and putting up strong numbers is often difficult too since you aren’t getting regular work.

        • therealsince86 says:

I think he would be perfect if we did not already have Anderson and Easely. To me he is overkill.

        • MetsLv31 says:

See I’d just rather have Gotay then Anderson. Anderson is better defensively but not so much to make up for his total lack of offense. For me, Gotay’s bat outweighs his marginal defense.

  5. ihavegas says:

    he gets fan mail?

    • red high tops and a mets cap worn backwards says:

matt did point out it was a “small stack”. hahahaha i feel bad just typing that :(

  6. Michel Abreu is hurt now too. Be careful, Matt. There’s something in the water down there that weakens bones worse than osteoporosis. I don’t wanna see a post with the big red cross graphic and your name on the injured list.

  7. Pedro says:

on WFAN, Eddie Coleman just reported that Delgado’s backup Abreu, is now out with a hip flexor from yesterday’s game winning play. He’s out too. Reyes, Wright and Santana should all just go home and sit in an empty room. We can’t afford another injury.

    • yea, i just posted that right before you did. Does anyone find it ironic that everyone and their mothers are getting injured, yet Moises Alou continues to walk without crutches? ::knocking on wood with a rabbit’s foot::

    • stickguy says:

talk about blowing a potential opportunity. I don’t know how bad it is, and if he can hurt it more, but in his situation it would have to be relaly bad for me to sit out!

DW could rest a few days with a twinge, but not a guy trying to beat long odds to win a roster spot.

    • yubbajr says:

I saw Abreu hobbling after that slide – and was hoping somehow he wasn’t hurt…should have known.

  8. Charlie says:

the whole injury situation is starting to feel very scary to me…

    • Saltzy23 says:

Stop it. Its 3/4. The only one that MAY affect the team is DelCrapo, and I didnt exactly have high hopes for him anyway….

      • Charlie says:

        it’s just a feeling, man. that’s all.

        • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

charlie, i have the same feeling too i just want to see castillo and beltran play in a ST game so i can rest a little easy. delgado to me is replaceable bc of how poorly he did last yr if hes out for a while, even castillo is replaceable if he were out for a while but if we lost beltran for longer than we originally planned we are royally effed offensively and defensively.

  9. JDuelz (Athens, GA) says:

Damn, I really like Gotay too…

    • therealsince86 says:

What part did you really like? In fact I think he is over rated. He plays bad defense and even if he were an every day player would most likely hit about .275 with 12 HR. He is a platoon player at best as he only hit .200 vs. LHP and its hard to be a platoon with bad defense.
What makes me laugh is when people say he could give us as much as Delgado. Delgado’s off year will be a better year than Gotay will ever have.
Look he was a good spark last year but cooled off imediately and never really did anything in the minors. I hate to see someone injured but oh well.

      • JDuelz (Athens, GA) says:

I’m just a big supporter of overachievers, and I was just hoping he’d pull through. He has enough talent at the plate to make a difference in a ballgame, and I was just hoping he’d turn a corner with his defense to become something bigger than he was last year.

  10. therealsince86 says:

Here’s a fantasy blockbuster for you. Rockies have wanted to get rid of Helton’s contract for years and are locking up all their youth.
Rockies get Delgado, Show, Sosa. That’s a total of 22 million owed.
Mets get Fuentes and Helton that’s about 80 million owed.
Mets get their long term 1st baseman and reliable reliever Rockies get flexiblity to lock up other youth.

    • Charlie says:

Well, Helton is not what he was, so the price tag for him could be fairly crippling. The guy hasn’t hit more than 20 homers in four years!

      • therealsince86 says:

Very true but he still hits for a high average, is professional and plays good defense. Helton in the 5/6 hole would be a nice addition. I agree that his contract is too much. Something like 75 million for 4 years.

        • stickguy says:

not a masher anymore, but he could be John Olerud.

Actually an intriguing, out of the box idea 9so of course right up Omar’s alley).

The problem of getting a FT 1B is, what do you do when Delgado is healthy (on the off chance it happens)? Dumping him somehow eliminates that problem.

    • statnut says:

I gotta believe the Rockies see their All-Star reliever and .300 hitting, 40 double, first baseman who is one of the better fielders in the league, as being more valuable than a bunch of expiring contracts. You’d certainly have to sweeten the pot, at least if I were them.

      • therealsince86 says:

You are prob. right but they could still be just as good without Helton and could find a replacement for Delgado next season. Think about the Rockies not a large market team. They could put Nick Johnson at 1B next season and still have 15 million to spend on a pitcher.

    • napes22 says:

Thats the best Garbage for superstar trade proposal I’ve ever seen. Sign me up :D

    • astoriametsfan72 says:

Try throwing in Fernando Martinez as the centerpiece for Helton just to start trade talks. Helton is the face of the franchise. No way Colorado is trading Helton for 2 league average relief pitchers and an injured, aging first baseman..

      • therealsince86 says:

That’s why I said fantasy. It would not happen but that being said, Helton is no longer the face of their franchise. they have too much youth for that.

  11. QnsNative718 says:

Jesus Christ, the Mets are more banged up than a Paris Hilton blowup doll…

  12. mrmet423 says:

Poor kid… i was really hoping for some nice things out of him this year…

  13. GregB says:

“i hate to say this, but there is a realistic chance we never hear from him again”

wow, aren’t you just Little Miss Sunshine…sounds like you really cheered him up!

  14. backinbusiness says:

can we use a “sliding” coach or what?

also, who are these guys lucas and murphy playing 3B and 1B today? they are neither NRIs or on the 40 man.

pray for this “murphy” — 1B is dangerous stuff!

    • therealsince86 says:

Murphy played yesterday at 3B I think.

      • backinbusiness says:

I think he’s played 2 games so far. Looks like we got him in the 2006 draft from college, he played for St. Lucie last year, always at 3B.

Hey, anyone trying their hand at 1B this spring probably has unusually good odds!

        • moze1021 says:

He played college ball with Tony B’s kid….

Played last season in the Mets spring training games as well at 3rd base…

  15. krumbledkookie says:

I had no idea this was that bad… I though he’d be ready in a few days, or at least by the time the season started.

Wow, this is getting seriously frightening…

  16. therealsince86 says:

Here’s another idea for some depth that I think would work.
Trade for Melvin Mora. We should be able to get him for Show and Gotay if we wanted to. O’s get rid of salary Mets get a RH that still hits and can play many positions.

  17. mr.gee21 says:

Wow. I may have to stop reading Metsblog for awhile — I’m afraid I might get injured!

Speaking of injuries, anybody read about that Yanks fan sent to the hospital in Cambridge by a bunch of Sox fans? I may hate the Yanks, but kicking somebody’s face in for wearing a cap…disgusting.

  18. MeMetFan says:

Hope the dude is ok. Funny part is that the dude probable wasn’t even a real baseball fan, hence the yankee hat. Know what I mean boys and girls.
