Health: The List of Injuries
By Matthew Cerrone - Mar 5, 2008 9:23 pm

…ok, let’s try and go over this one more time…

Duaner Sanchez is temporarily sidelined due to soreness in his surgically-repaired right shoulder.

Ryan Church had tried to work out today, but felt dizzy and so he will remain sidelined until he is back on his feet after having suffered a concussion in a collision with Marlon Anderson, who bruised his chest.

Moises Alou will likely miss 4-6 weeks due to hernia surgery.

Carlos Delgado took ground balls and hit off a tee on Wednesday, and did not feel pain in his hip.  He will try to take batting practice tomorrow.

Carlos Beltran has yet to play in a spring training game, as he continues to recover from off-season surgery.  He says he will be ready for opening day.

Orlando Hernandez threw his first complete bullpen session and did not complain of any pain after it was done.

Endy Chavez and Jose Valentin took batting practice and ran the bases on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Both expect to play in a game this weekend.

Ruben Gotay has a sprained ankle.

Michel Abreu has been sidelined with a strained right hip flexor.

Brian Schneider has missed the last few games with a strained hamstring.  However, he has been taking batting practice and catching back at camp.

Also, my back hurts and I may be getting a sinus infection.

CERRONE GOES DOWN, AS DO METS CHANCES

      is it the roids?

      • mets484 says:

i know why all of these injuries are happening!!!

the team was forced to cut the strength and conditioning coach and all of the medical staff due to the price of santana…. and they’ve been hiding this from the public!! it all makes sense now…

        • mets484 says:

and before anyone starts flipping out at that comment… yes, i was jk

        • Two-By-Four says:

Some of these players appear like they never pass a fast food restaurant without Super Sizing everything.

    • Dnice817 says:

You must be a Yankee fan!

    • red high tops and a mets cap worn backwards says:

      begin?

      :P

    • Metbob22 says:

We need to change our team name to the New York “Walking Wounded” or the “Who Will Go Down Next”…are you kidding me ? This is crazy !!! Hey, can we get Carlos Gomez back ? And is Moises ever going to play more than 100 games in a season for the Mets ???

      Bob

  2. backinbusiness says:

Matt, you need to stay healthy; do you play any 1B?

    • stickguy says:

no, he is a pitcher, but he has developed a new change up recently.

    • jbinva says:

Matt, get that parabolic dish off of your head. That should help alleviate the back pain. Also, remember to drink plenty of fluids. I think lack of fluids is what did Al Franken in.

      • itsmetsforme says:

i thought Al was alive. It’s just his career that died.

        • jbinva says:

Well, it was really only his SNL character. I’m sure Al himself is still alive and kicking.

Al Franken: Uh, yes, Dennis.. about five days ago, my high-mobility multi-purpose vehicle.. ran out of gas. I’m gonna pan over there now – it’s a very difficult maneuver.. because the dehydration and 120° heat.. has left me in a weakened state. So weak, in fact, that I am not absolutely certain whether I am actually, uh.. talking to you.. or simply hallucinating.

I’m sure Matt is in better shape than that. :-)

  3. zemonstar says:

lol backinbusiness…. well, this is the part where we all think beltran should have just stayed shut, how is the “team to beat” gonna win with beat-up players? we might be up for a big embarrassment :(

  4. Nightlife says:

    Eeeeeverybody huurrrrrrrrrrrrtsssss…………….sooooometiiiimes.

  5. metsmaniac44 says:

this is ridiculous…any ideas for a new strength and conditioning coach?

    • Charlie says:

how does he help prepare the body for:

      1) concussions due to collisions (church/anderson)
      2) age (alou/delgado/el duque/abreu/valentin)
      3) wear and tear injuries (castillo/beltran)
      4) regular soreness (sanchez/schneider)
      5) injuries incurred outside of team oversight (endy)

    • jbinva says:

Ever since LoDuca left … eh, never mind.

  6. Charlie says:

to quote the much maligned joe benigno, “oh the pain!”

  7. bazballmetz says:

how long is gotay out for?

    • Nightlife says:

Gotay probably isn’t making the team, man.

    • Charlie says:

i sprained my ankle last friday (playing basketball). i was told by my doctor buddy (who examined me this weekend), that it would be 4-6 weeks until i was pain free. my sprain was pretty bad, though.

      • da burg's greatest says:

yeah, sprains are worse than breaks. a break you are in a cast for 4 weeks and you are good to go in 6. sprains can be a 2 week thing, or they can be a 4 month thing. you never know.

  8. effectivelywild says:

I’m surprised Johan didn’t hurt himself yesterday when Matt was trying to pull the ball out of his hands!

Keep the faith fellas, its a long season and a few months from now these injuries will be a distant memory. Lets go Mets!

  9. Andrew says:

    My foot fell asleep.

  10. mussi says:

with all the postive things happening, with a lot of negatives. i think it is signs of things to come..we must make a move or two..delgado and alou are a huge chunk of our offense.plus how is church going to handle lefties?

  11. all these players are hurt? when did this happen? did anyone else know this?

    • x-nady says:

Off topic, but, how do you guys go about getting Bold & Blue screen names?

Do you have to post a certain amount of times or be initiated Tri-Lam Fraternity style? Hotel Coral Essex anyone?

  12. Moses69 says:

Idk wat to say except. WERE mets fans we should have expected this.

I think it will be alright, things will work out i know it. People will step up.

  13. NBH says:

Don’t forget Castillo – we paid him $25 million, he got his knees cleaned out and he hasn’t played a game either.

  14. wolverine193 says:

Since we’re all in a bad mood anyway, I’d just like to pile on and restate my position that the Milledge trade SUCKED.

    • x-nady says:

Regardless, he is gone. Get over it. He will be exposed to be the over confident, undisciplined brat that he is with that gnats lineup around him anyway.

  15. Moses69 says:

    SCrew Milledge.

  16. krumbledkookie says:

Does this mean that F-Mart starts the season with the team? How sweet would that be to give him a taste?

    • Too early. We have to stop rushing these guys. He’s 19 for god’s sake. There’s more than enough time for him to play in the major leagues. Now is just not the time.

      • ASod1975 says:

Yeah exactly. Remember Victor Diaz looked really good in camp a few years back, bringing all those Mini-Manny comparisons. Now I truly believe F-Mart is the real deal, but let’s see him get a few more minor league ABs to get some more experience. If he thrives at AA or AAA this year, a late-season call-up isn’t out of the question (and if the injuries keep hitting the way they’re hitting, it could be earlier than late-season).

      • bobabouy01 says:

As I recall we also “rushed” another promising outfielder to Shea back in the 80’s…….aside from the drug and personal issues, he did pretty well (and from what’s been written the last few days, it seems he’s in good enough shape to jump in there and probably perform as well or better than some of the walking wounded !)

  17. lordt78 says:

I can’t believe SNY did not show the encore of today’s game. Infidels!!!

  18. miker94 says:

oh the pain, OOOOHHHHHH the pain. sucks too cuz i’m gonna be in PSL this weekend, and i’ll basically get to see wright, reyes and a bunch of minor leaguers. that’s cool though, i’m excited to see THM’s swing.

    Go Mets!

  19. CornellMetsFan says:

im predicting santana gets hurt next. this year has come… and will go… again

  20. cgpublic says:

Have no fear Mets fans – Willie will out manage the competition regardless of who is on the roster come Opening Day.

    Let’s hear it for Willieball!

And don’t forget, Omar has got his back.

  21. georgemets says:

I know Kieth and Ron are around, and Darryl is around too. I think we need them. When does gooden get out of jail?

  22. J0eSmiTh says:

Well, we wont be seeing Moist Hands till Mid July.

  23. apagano says:

OK so who takes the LF job until Alou comes back? Will it be a Chavez/Pagan platoon? At this rate the Mets Opening Day outfield will be Clark-Chavez-Pagan. A veritable murderer’s row!

  24. georgemets says:

We still have Johan Santana. Can he play every position like Bugs Bunny did that one time?

    • zemonstar says:

lol hey, ya gotta believe…not that i do but…

    • mdemaio says:

“Watch me paralyze this pathetic palooka with a powerful, paralyzing, perfect pachydermous percussion pitch!”

      gotta love BB….

  25. metballnut says:

If anyone thinks this team is gonna beat the Phillies as it is currently constructed, please send me what you are smoking.
Alou is hurt? What a shock. Minaya made no plans for a RH outfielder…oh wait…we have Brady Clark! In the meantime, Baltimore is about to trade Jay Paton…someone who WOULD be a nice fit in LF as a throw in with Brian Roberts.
Look, the Mets need to offer Joe Smith to Pittburgh for Nady. Pittsburgh would make this deal. Then go out and get Thames for Sosa or Schoewnweis and or look to the Angels for Rivera. Wise is the real deal.
OMAR WAKE UP. THE METS NEED TO MAKE MOVES NOW.
WE CAN’T START THE YEAR AS A BELOW .500 TEAM

    • stickguy says:

No, everyone starts even at .500, so no worries there.

And if the Mets did pick up one more ML OF like Nady, they wouldn’t likely trade more pitching for another one.

Alou may not play the full year when he gets back, but he should get the bulk of the PT. And you have to assume that Beltran will play (although he may start slow), and CHurch will be ready.

Endy is an OK back up, and having Pagan could be a godsend at this point.

When Moises comes back, a bench of Anderson, Easley or Gotay, Castro, Nady and Pagan or Endy will be fine (although I would rather have Pagan). Depends on whether Easley can play the field.

ALthough who knows if the Pirates would trade nady for Smith, I would do it though!

    • ASod1975 says:

Forgive me, but I’m not sold on the Phillies’ pitching. Not one bit. Hamels and Myers are good, but Moyer is 800 years old and I’m not a big believer in Kendrick. And then Eaton/Durbin or whoever they throw in the 5 spot doesn’t invoke fear. Their bullpen isn’t all that great either. At the end of the day, pitching prevails and the Mets have more of it. And I’m sure Omar is working the phones trying to bring in re-inforcements. It’s only March 5th, guys. I still believe the team will be fine.

      • gomets6091 says:

I agree with you, but you need SOME offense, and right now the Mets lineup is Reyes and Wright and then it’s goodnight (ok that was terrible…sue me)

      • da burg's greatest says:

        what about the braves though?

the braves are really really good. i feel like everyone is overlooking them.

    • dave27 says:

Yeah, starting under .500 killed the Phillies last year….

It’s a long season and a long way to it. Relax.

  26. Philnym31 says:

    Matt Murton

  27. Now we know what the commercial where the guy says “I went to web MD so often I developed carple-tunnel syndrome” (or something like that) means.

  28. stone11375 says:

well, they tried. they made a nice run and it really came down to the wire in early March. Oh well, there’s always next season

  29. sdanzig says:

To summarize, only one player will miss Opening Day. If it stays that way, I’m happy.

  30. GetsByBuckner415 says:

Looks like the baseball gods are punishing us for raping the Twins on the Santana deal…I guess Omar and Willie are back on the hot seat…well Omar definitely is as he put alot of stock in Delgado and Alou.

2008 Mets Season…I hardly knew ya…plus they should re-sell the naming rights of the new field to any of the local medical centers given all our injuries.

  31. metsin080910 says:

You guys are crazy. Alou will be back. Deglado will be fine, as will Castillo, Beltran and Church. In the meantime, Omar, I’m available to play LF. I promise I’ll stay healthy. I will sign a one-year deal and play for the league minimum. Sounds like a bargain.

  32. mr.gee21 says:

Looks like most of these guys are going to back at or around opening day. Don’t think we are losing all that much hear… Ideal? No. But nobody seems to be out for the long haul, so we shouldn’t be all that worried.

Then again, this is metsblog, where people were moaning about starting spring training on a losing streak…

  33. darkstar73 says:

what can I say when I see Mets fans freaking out on March 5th? well…it’s expected, with this never happy bunch of hypertensive bipolar disordered fans, even March 5th isn’t a stretch.

  34. killerkill says:

guys i know that its early in spring training… but should i be worried? Everyday goes by and i keep saying its early, its early and everytime i say that another Met goes down!

    • mr.gee21 says:

      Yes, you should worry.

It is definitely because of you saying that it is early that Mets keep getting hurt. Please stop saying it is early. Do it for the safety of our team. They have families and loved ones, too. Have a heart.

  35. Dnice817 says:

I don’t understand why some fans are hitting the panic button, so what if we have a couple of injuries during the first week of march!!, most of the players would be back in time of opening day!

  36. MetsFan21 says:

Anyone here looking to join a Yahoo fantasy league? I have a 12 team set up (looking for 7 additional teams) with the draft scheduled for Friday 3/21/2008 at 9:45pm EST.

  37. VCarver says:

I want Angel Pagan to get first crack at the backup outfield job. But if they need someone in addition to him, then I want F-Mart to get the nod, provided he continues to hit in spring training.

He is NOT Victor Diaz. He’s got an incredible amount of poise and maturity at the plate for someone so young.

He will hit, and if he doesn’t hit enough, they just send him down to Bingo or NO. I highly doubt it will ruin his confidence.

  38. absentminded says:

    I’m not panicking but…

Just because almost everyone will be ready to play by opening day doesn’t mean they’ll actually be ready without getting in their ST reps. You’re supposed to shake off the rust in March, not during the season. To take a page from Bobby Cox’s book, every game you win in April is a game you don’t have to win in September, something that should have new meaning for us. I wanted to come out swinging, looks like it’ll be a wing and a prayer until we get things going.

  39. metsin080910 says:

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m happy right now. The Mets’ won 5 games in a row after starting 0-3, I don’t care who is out on the field. If some of the players that are contributing to this win streak have to fill in for a player like Alou for about 3-4 weeks, I wouldn’t mind. Pagan is really impressing me this Spring. He should get the first chance. Keep Endy as the 4th outfielder. If one of them go down, you have to bring up F-Mart, unless Minaya brings in a guy like Thames, then the whole outcome changes. He is a solid player and could give us a nice platoon with Chavez.

  40. MrBotch says:

atleast we’re getting the injuries out of the way early… and not in august/september…… *crossess fingers*

  41. HOFMets57 says:

    Darn.

  42. edwin nieves says:

C’mon guys have faith in your team. Yeah some of the guys are “nicked up” but they are pros and will step up when it counts. Many of these guys are biting at the bit to regain something that was taken away from them and this being the last season at Shea I’m sure they will not let us down. Let’s go Mets!

    • Nutz15 says:

The quickest and easiest song I’ve ever written:

(Of course, sung to the tune of Meet The Mets ‘62 version)

      Gimpy Mets….
      Hobbled Mets….
      Downright Ger-i-a-tric Mets.

      Throw your back out
      Go under the knife….
Half the fanbase wants to take their own life!

Because the Mets are really roaming the halls
      With canes and walkers….
      Smells like mothballs…..

      Hamstrings
      Ankles
      Twisting, Ripping, Tearing, Pulllllls…..

      They just can’t keep-it on-the-field
      To play — some — baaallll……

  43. bobabouy01 says:

I can’t believe you people !!!! All any of you care about here is Alou and Delgado and Gotay and Anderson and Church and Sanchez and Schneider !!!!

WHAT ABOUT CERRONE !!??? HE MAY HAVE A SINUS INFECTION !!!!! WHERE’S THE COMPASSION PEOPLE ???!!

Matt……hang in there buddy !! We’re all pulling for ya’ !!
    :-)

  44. stickguy says:

Enough with this anceint team crap. The Yanks are the old geezer team in town!

The Mets have 2 really old (by baseball standards) guys, Alou and Duque. 5th starter, and LF that gets paid for p/t duty (sad as that is).

Delgado and pedro aren’tt young, but are still at an age where it is not unreasonable to be expected to be productive.

Wagner is the only other old guy that sees regular duty.

Everyone else is in what should be there prime years (28-32), except for the guys that are younger.

Easley and Anderson are older, but they are bench players/PHs, and replaceable.

Omar tried to milk 1 more year of semie-regualr production out of Duque and ALou, mainly because they camre relatively cheap, and the in house replacements weren’t ready (plus he needed to trade for Sanatana).

The Hernia is also more of a freak thing too, and not really related to Alou being 42.

Sure, too many aches/pains and guys not back from minor procedures, but let them recover during ST, and see how they are on opening day.

The team will be OK if they have to run Pagan/Endy out there for a month or so, or Omar will pick up some back ups.

and, The rotation as it stands is all young guys (in their mid 20’s, with the exception of Pedro), which is a good thing.

Finally, most of the posters railing on Omar for having a old team would go nuts if he had gone real young, and they struggled yelling about lack of veteran leadership!
