The Mets took another walk-off Grapefruit League win today, beating the Dodgers, 3-2, in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Johan Santana tossed three innings, allowing two hits, one walk and one earned run while striking out four.
Steven Register followed with two scoreless frames, in which he struck out two. Scott Schoeneweis, Nate Field and Joe Smith each pitched one scoreless inning. Juan Padilla allowed an unearned run on two hits in the seventh.
Anderson Hernandez was the offensive hero for the Mets, knocking in the game-winning run and going 3-for-5 on the day. Fernando Martinez was machine-like at the dish, notching two hits — including a double — and a walk in four plate appearances.
Smith earned the win in relief, while Tom Martin took the loss.

FMart had a bad error in the outfield. His glove is massive
That’s OK, we’ll give the kid a break, Pagan is really making a case for himself, He’s a fan favorite here in PSL.
Serioulsy, I know our new SNY overlord Mr. Berg gets his checks singed by a Wilpon…but must he be such a blatant cheerleader?
Mr. berg did the same in his most recent post to his pseudo-”blog” on sny.tv ….c’mon Ted, at least attempt a little subtlety in your shilling! Metsblog used to be a voice for the fans, not for Sterling Equities.
The times, they are a changing here on Metsblog.
man, what is your problem? this isn’t espn, its a METS blog, its going to have bias. Metsblog was never this overly critical blog about the Mets, and frankly, if you don’t like the way metsblog is run, why are you here?
My problem is Mr Berg, not Messrs. Cerrone, De Rosa, Short, Nichols, et al. Futhermore, I have been here long before Wilpon’s boy Mr. Berg and was an early contributor when Matt needed reader contributions.
Granted, the site was never overly critical and is from a fan’s perpective….yet the combination of Mr. Berg’s conflict of interest and the tone of his posts here and on SNY.tv troubles me as a long time reader, commenter, and contributor.
I trust that Matt will keep the site from going too far down the rabbit hole, that is “why i am here”. However, I find the Berg stuff genuinely troubling.
Let’s see what happens.
Sorry to disagree with you Darkstar, …I usually agree with you and enjoy your input.
i fail to see how this post by Berg was anything more then a recap of a meaningless game.
While lauding the THM’s machine like hitting “at the dish” he failed to recap his poor fielding, including droping a routing flyball (for the second time this spring).
He also failed to note that Johan is still on the low end of his velocity scale (which could be normal ramping up in March or a disturbing continuation of a trend from the second half of last year).
Could these be mere oversights? Sure.
If Matt/DJ, Mike, etc wrote the same, the benefit of the doubt exists…..but given Berg’s employer and his cheerleader tone in his posts on SNY – see his latest for an example on sny.tv (the gist being how can the meanies in the NY press be worried about injuries and the future beyond 2008 on this great team?)…….well, one worries about the conflict of interest. THAT is the problem.
We’ll just have to agree to disagree.
Maybe we’re all just cranky with all the injuries taking some of the wind out of our sails.
*routine…not routing. Too much time thinking about IFR regulations in my flight lessons.
cerrone gets his checks signed by wilpon/sny too.
But cerrone has a history I/we trust.
Also, the relationship between Metsblog and SNY is a strategic partnership more akin to SNy being a largge advertiser. Matt has said he would (and easily can) go back to being a successful blogger apart from SNY if any editorial pressure is placed on him. As I recall, he aslo made that part of the deal. Matt knows if he or the site loses credibility, readers will go elsewhere, other blogs will be started to counter such a trend, etc.
Mr,. Berg on the other hand IS an editorial producer for SNY with no history I/we know of as being a trusted source with objective critiques of the organiazation under his belt…..that strikes me as a qualitative difference.
We’ll see.
why do you care so much? this blog is still the best BECAUSE of Cerrone, Berg is just helping out for a week while Cerrone is down in Florida. Recaps of spring training games seem pretty unimportant to me.
Holy typos…sorry, you get the gist. Before I had assistants/secretaries I was a good typist….now, not so much.
Darkstar,
I really don’t care too much….hence my “we’ll see” attitude….frankly, given that others expressed concern about Mr, Berg the other day, I didn’t think my comment would be so controversial. Just responding to you.
The point has been made. Let’s just see how things develop. If Berg oes back to his shilling on SNY after pitching in for a couple weeks while Matt is in PSL, fine.
We have more important things to wory about like the health of the team.
darksie why don’t you just let gipper have his opinion. if it was the same as yours, how would you know which was which?
Did someone going by the name “Gipper” really accuse Mr. Berg of shillery or did I take one too many irony pills this morning?
Maybe the Voodoo logic of this will trickle down to me someday.
Jeez, what a loon…go peddle crazy somewhere else, we’re all stocked up here.
lmao well put
Alou is out 4-6 weeks. Church is still dazed and Beltran can’t even run yet…
Pagan and F-Mart better be ready to pick up a bat opening day.
Looks like Alou is having surgery.
In light of all the injuries, it is nice to see the pitching doing well thus far.
lol, i love the machine-like reference. Heh, maybe this team is creating a knack for coming through in the clutch.
oh, and I don’t know if we’ll ever hear “Anderson Hernandez” and “offensive hero” in the same PARAGRAPH ever again. I know you set yourself up for that one real bad.
I didn’t see the game, were a-hern’s 3 hits all on the “butcher boy” play?
I only saw his game winner but it was a hard hit ball down the first base line, he went with the pitch the other way, as nice a piece of hitting as I’ve seen from anderson hernandez.
Way to go Ahern! He can do it in AAA and ST!
Aww why’d my comment get deleted? It was pure sarcasm.
Can we simply refer to Fernando Martinez from now on as Teenage Hitting Machine Fernando Martinez. Or we could call him THM for short.
for some reason, that nickname makes me think of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles…maybe its just the Teenage part
hahaha i thought of that too
We should just call him “The Machine.”
I agree Bones. The Mackine sounds great. I can’t wait til mike and the mad dog start killing him because he is left handed.
How can the mets lineup be too left handed heavy if they have 3 lefties, 2 righties and 3 switch hitters? sounds pretty balanced to me, especially if you consider 2 of the lefties, schneider and church, are hitting at the bottom of the lineup.
My only problem with “The Machine” is it reminds me of the snuff film star from 8MM that still kinda weirds me out. Either way, in some fashion we should not mention Fernando without referring to his status as a Teenage Hitting Machine (which writer dubbed him that this summer). Much like how Bill Simmons has changed Theo Ratliff’s name to “Theo Ratliff’s Expiring Contract”.
You know it’s Spring Training when the Mets have great performances by Martinez and Hernandez, but Pedro and El Duque still haven’t taken the mound.
Pedro starts tomorrow (supposedly).
nice to see fmart doing well. he may be the default starting LF by the time April comes around.
Umm,,,,did you see the two routine fly balls he simply dropped thus far in ST? Maybe switch him to 1B. Perhaps he can hit…..but he is no fielding machine.
he’s 18…relax
Relax? He was replying to the suggestion that he start in LF. Is “relax” going to be your reaction if he does start in LF and drops routine fly balls in games that count?? I don’t think so.
he’s not going to be starting in LF, so yeah, relax.
NoPepper,
Exactly…he’s raw and the suggestion on the table was he’d be starting LF on the major league level. I agree, he is 18 and deserves time to develop his defense….just would not like to see him do that, you know, in the big leagues.
clearly i was joking about the injury situation. i dont seriously expect or think he should start in the OF this year even if he hits 500 in ST.
Good enough.
first of all, he’s 19. second of all, it is common for OF’s in spring training to misplay fly balls due to sun conditions. Third, He has little experience in the corners, perhaps the mets should shift him there full-time when the AAA season starts instead of still treating him like a CF.
the wind is tough down there too..I do think at this point there’s a good chance we see martinez in the bigs this summer, with the injuries the way they are. I’ve also seen him make two spectacular plays in the outfield, which to me is more important than the routine ones. With practice, he’ll get better at the routine plays..the circus catches can’t be taught, that’s all instinct (look at shawn green for instance)
with Alou gone, I think he is the starting LF right now, since Pagan is the starting CF (although that idea is starting to seem less scary by the day!)
Beltran will play on opening day. He might only be 87.3%, but he’ll play.
bad news…it is being reported that Jose Valentin pulled a mustache hair…he is day to day
also Willie said that if Delgado is not read yfor opening day that AHern can play 1B and will bat 5th
Finally, remember Mets fans it could be worse we could have Felix Pie and his twisted testical on our injury list, yup threw up a little in my mouth just writing those words down.
You will spew if you read the details of his testicle twist. Sounds like they got twisted up pretty bad.
saw game on sny.
f-mart has a very sweet stroke and a very mature approach. stays in there like a pro — no lunging about. that bodes very well for his future
kiner, on today’s broadcast, told how much he loves his swing. best thing i have heard about the kid.
now if they can just be patient…
Can’t watch any of the spring training games this year since I’m at school in Indiana until the end of April. Thats a good line from Johan though….looks like hes getting closer to where we need him to be. When should we start getting worried about Beltran, Delgado and Alou? And do you guys really think it’s a realistic possibility that F-Mart starts the season in LF?
I’d guess guys like Pagan and Clark get shots before F-Mart, but with the way things are going expect them to come down with polio and chicken pox any day now.
Go to mets.com and look at their schedule. Three games in March will be on espn so you might be able to get them out in Indiana.
The upside about all the injuries is being able to see players like F-Mart, Ruben Tejada, and Niese do well with the big club. I’d actually rather watch them in spring training than some of the veterans going through the motions.
agreed — this is why we’ve had the big 9th inning wins..these kids are excited to play and are trying to win a spot, they know there are spots to be had. I just hope some of them can carry it in to the regular season. Pagan has looked especially good out there.
Just saw that I missed the video game debate earlier today…thought I would throw in my 2 cents: I own an xbox360, so I had no choice but to buy mlb2k8, although I did play the Show on my friends ps3 last night. I agree that the Show is the better game, and it is the closest thing to MVP baseball(best baseball game ever). My recommendation for those that play 2k8…change the batting interface to “classic”, as well as the pitching interface. I think the gameplay is much more enjoyable when using the A button to swing as opposed to the right analog stick…and the new pitching in this years game was a little too weird for me. And who was the guy that said EA sports might get the exclusive liscense to MLB games next year? That could be the best news I’ve heard all week.
the pitching system grew on me in a few hours and i enjoy mastering the different types. its original.
im trying the franchise on the ahrdest skill level, whatever that is. the game is ahrd to me right now and i’m 0-4 as the Mets, who are ranked 1st in the NL.
I cannot figure out how to throw to the cutoff man from the outfield. im going to continue to work on that tonight
me..EA already put in a bid to buy Take Two, but they want EA to wait until Grand Theft Auto IV comes out, which will obviously raise TT’s share price, and for EA to make a stronger bid…something in the $2 billion range.
The issue is that MVP would have to be built from scratch basically, since it hasn’t been developed on next gen (360/ps3) systems…Look at how MLB 07 and 2K6 did…both had some issues porting over from xbox/ps2….Assuming the time frame is correct, you are looking at maybe 2010, before MVP delivers its true potential. But with the $’s that MVP could pick up over The Show on PSP, PS2. PS3 may convince them to being the development process asap.
MLB 2K8 for the 360 is a complete rip off. With just the frame rate alone, 2K should be embarrassed.
I’m thinking about buying one of those commemorative bricks in City Field for $400.
Sooo, which department of the mets do you work for? Sales or marketing?
and…if you work for the mets, would you please send me the brick i already paid for?
you’d think the marketing dept would spell it right.
if Martinez starts in new york this season at age 18 he’ll have a good shot of breaking Pete Rose all time hits record
I think we all need to settle down a little bit before we are predicting 200 hits a year for the next 22 years. He hit .271 in AA last year, he’s not an 18 year old ichiro.
Ha! Getting just a wee bit ahead of ourselves, are we?
Plus, THM is 19 and turns 20 on october 10. his b-day present better be a trip to the NLCS.
…at which point he will be known as the adolescent hitting machine
Yes, we need to begin a year long campaighn to come up with a nickname for the kid after October 10…
between THM breaking the all time hit record and one poster claiming a while back that milledge would be at least as good as ramirez we couldve had the best corner OF combo of all time.
Just imagine if we still had “mini-manny” victor diaz… we’d have an outfield of Manny Ramirez, Pete Rose, and Manny Ramirez. Damn, what is omar thinking?
Mets fans need to loosen up a bit…i doubt the fan who said millege was hte next manny at least along with my post saying THM would break the all time hit record were actually serious…I was just making a dumb post…id say theres prob only a 35 percent chance he ever makes an all star team
the guy that made the post actually backed up his comment later by continuing to say how great milledge would be so i think he was serious. this was like a week ago.
manny is just the pre-cursor to thrilledge…..
this whole team is a bunch of sissies, if they got into a brawl it would be like tyson fighting an infant.
I agree…the mets would get their a**es handed to them in a real fight….Milledge however is a sissy too
Did Santana’s fastball ever get about 85mph?
I think the SNY gun was off, bc as per Adam Rubin, who does a great job, Johan was at 91 on scouts’ guns
It didn’t look like it, but the same was true for Penny’s fastball and his normal speed is higher than Santana’s. So I wouldn’t take anything from it. They both probably need to build up arm strength.
FMart should and will start in the minors, even if every OF in the system is hurt….you all realize that if we had left Gomez in the minors instead of bringing him up too early we could gotten Santana for him and maybe 1 other prospect? And we sure coulda netted more for LMillz if we had just left him in the minors to mature mentally and physically, instead we rushed him to the majors, he lost half of his trade value on impact and we got 2 good players but not what we couldve received if he was still a “prospect”
Unless Dr. Phill was managing AAA last year, I don’t think Milz would have matured. some people are just headcases. And just leaving someone in the minors doesn’t make their trade value go up. The thing with mils was that the new york fans and media thought that he was worth more than the entire baseball world. we got fair value in return for him, perhaps even more. Imagine if the mets traded our starting catcher and a RF who had 58 extra base hits last year for a kid who hasn’t reached his potential and has a number of off the field issues? that gm would be killed.
thrilledge is the true hitting machine….. i cant wait til he bats 300+ next year. i pray he is the next chipper when it comes to the mets. when ur 19-20 yrs old and ur the centerpiece of trades for manny, oswalt, and zito(when he was cy young worthy), u dont trade him for 25% of the worst offense in baseball.
agreed
I don’t know about you, but it sounds to me like you’d rather use him as a chip in a trade than F-Mart maturing and letting him become this supposed “hitting machine” in Queens… If that’s the case, p’shame on you…
how did that extra seasoning in the minors work out for Matt Peterson, Grant Roberts, Pat Strange, Alex Ochoa, and Alex Escobar?
And Reyes and Wright were rushed…
Either someone can play or they can’t.
FAB!:
Duaner Sanchez isn’t available to pitch in games due to soreness in his surgically repaired right shoulder.
Manager Willie Randolph said he’s limited to long-tossing and that there’s no timetable for his return. It appears likely that he’ll begin the year on the DL, possibly opening the door for Rule-5 pick Steven Register to make the team.
where was that reported?
Rotoworld
Well, now that the duanar experiment is over, how did Register look? He did lead the minors in saves last year. What is his stuff like? He has great command from what I’ve read.
BTW…rotoworld lifted that from Delcos blog at the Journal News. They neglected to mention that Randolph said (take it for what it’s worth) that it’s “normal soreness from not having pitched in a year-and-a half”
There is also ZERO mention of a DL stint (rotoworld’s inclusion). Not saying it won’t happen…but typical cherry-picking quotes.
The thing that bothers me is that he was light years ahead of other pitchers 2 weeks ago when everyone showed up and now he needs 4-5 days in between outings. very discouraging.
Nothing to worry about unless he feels this way come April 1st.
I tend to ignore all soreness issues, this is why they report almost 2 months before the season starts.
What I do wish is that these guys (Delcos, Rubin, Davidoff, etc), who do an EXCELLENT job, would push a little more with this stuff.
I mean, it took people almost a full week to realize that Sanchez hadn’t pitched since Friday?? Go talk to him and see whats up!
this is going to be a fun season. though it’s likely that the expectations are so high with santana that there will be lots of disappoint in terms of how close the nl east will be. the phil and braves will be very good. it’s likely to come down to september.
and we could be very frustrated with an anemic offense.
Interesting tidbits (from Olney, via Fleecefactor). Particularly nice to see the Braves having problems too.
-The elbow of Atlanta Braves closer Rafael Soriano seems to have flared up . Not good news at all for the already fragile Braves pen.
-Scouts feel that free-agent pitcher Kyle Lohse will look to land with a contender later in the spring, when someone inevitably goes down due to injury. Olney notes that his demands are now only 1-year, at less than $10 million. And this after he was offered a multi-year deal by the Phillies this past offseason
Moises Alou out 4-6 weeks with a hernia, according to David Lennon at Newsday.
Incredible.
HOW IS THIS NOT POSTED ON METSBLOG YET! i heard it on wfan . whats going on with this site??
man, a hernia!
wow…unreal
chill man, Matt might not even have access to a computer since he’s in a new setting in PSL.
still though, i’m very bummed out by this…..i guess he’ll start the season on the DL and come back soon after (assuming no setbacks) :(
doesn’t he have his own laptop?
and there are other people that contribute to this site. this is major news!
lol they need to add me as a contributor to this site, I’d have this site updated to the mintue!
shocking. it is what it is. 90+ games missed was expected. See you in july (reality). moises’ great aug/sept will turn into glass mo in tee minus: 10, 9, 8, 7…
yup, he’s having surgery
oh my flippin god. What is going on with this! Could this be any worse!! Assuming Church, Beltran, and Delgado are ok, and I don’t know but those might be big if’s!, our lineup is:
Reyes
Castillo (how often will he play)
Wright
Beltran
Delgado
Church (how do we know)
Chavez/Pagan?
Castro/Schneider (could be banged up)
Let’s just hope no one else goes down. Jeez louise.
So he’s gonna be out 4-6 weeks before he can even resume baseball activity meaning he’ll miss most of April..and I wouldn’t be surprised if that spills over into May..
Wow.
Duaner – possible arm problems
Delgado – hip
Castillo – knees
Beltran – knees
Schneider – hamstring
Alou – hernia
Church – concussion
Gotay – sprained ankle
Easley – Ankle
Chavez – ?
El Duque – toe/everything
We could field a whole team of injured players. Ridiculous. Fate isn’t on our side this season, boys and girls.
It’s too early to be saying if ‘fate’ is on our side or not
I’ll give you that, but show me a team that has even half as many problems as us so far. Most of the players we were depending on to have good seasons this year are out for who knows how long.
Nobody does, we do have a lot of injuries but as long as none of them are season-ending or involve any of our starting pitchers I think we’ll hang around and eventually we’ll all come together 100% healthy at some point during the season
Wow, I was just joking around with my buddies at lunch today that I was amazed out of all the injured Mets that Alou was not on the list. Unbelievable. This is so depressing.
Reyes
Pagan
Church
Wright
Castro
Abreu
F. Mart?
A. Hern?
Is this really what our opening day lineup will most likely look like? That’s the saddest I’ve seen it in years.
lol I don’t think it will be that bad..I’m sure everyone will be ready except Alou obviously
I’m sure Omar is working the phones to make sure the Opening Day lineup looks nothing close to that….
Man…word of Duaner starting season on DL and now Alou out for six weeks….this has not been a good day. This is beginning to feal like 1987 redux…lots of hope quashed by a rash of injuries.
I just read on Mets.com that Duaner is likely to pitch this weekend. He just need more time to recover from soreness *fingers crossed*
I hope so…but it certainly seems his progress has slowed dramatically.
*feel
Church has reported the return of concussion symptoms today so he couldn’t do any baseball work today. I will admit, I am starting to get nervous will all this stuff. But Schneider did talk during the broadcast today and said he is pretty much ready to go. This is just crazy.
Church had a Grade 2 concussion, I wouldn’t want him to come back this weekend anyways, let him rest and come back during the weekend or sometime next week
*this week
Anyone in CT get U-verse service? I got it particularly to watch SNY and came home today to see my DVR blacked-out — it was my first day with the service so I was fired up to see Johann pitch. Not sure exactly what happened here. Before I call complaining up a storm, I wondered if anyone else has an answers. Thanks!
The thing with Alou was Omar didn’t need to pick up his option for 2008. I know most fans here applauded that, but it just didn’t make sense to me with someone of Alou’s age and injury history.
They’ll be lucky to get 60 games out of him this year, and I’m sure Omar was banking on at least about 110 from him.
I hope Omar learns his lesson about AARP players. Which is not that you stay away from them altogether, but just don’t acquire so many all at once and especially ones with spotty health records.
alou’s $8.5m wasn’t money well spent. hopefully with him leaving omar will take that cash along with delgado’s to make a run at texeira. i doubt they’ll get him with boras’ demand.
the offense is light this year, but pitching wins so it should be an interesting, tight nl east race this year
Agree that pitching is the most important ingredient. And since their rotation is intact at this point, except for El Duque who no one was counting on anyway for a full season, the Mets should still easily be the class of the NL.
I think they can get around the injuries with the bench and farm system, but it Beltran is out too, then that will be a blow.
Next year they have Delgado ($20m), Alou ($8.5m) and El Duque ($6m) all coming off the books. That’s over $30 mill so even if they can’t get Teixeira they can improve the club in other areas. I’d actually prefer they use it on starting pitching.
Or sign them to multi-year deals (El Duque for example).
Opening Day Lineup
Reyes
Castilla
Wright
Beltran
Delgado
Church
Chavez (Platooned with Pagan/Anderson)
Schneider
Pitcher
Alou is a killer but Beltran, Castilla, and Delgado will be alright
I can’t believe SNY did not show the encore of this game. Infidels!!!
Heh sorry should be 0-4.
thanks for the correction. i would have had a major problem with your post otherwise.
