The Mets square off with the Dodgers today in a Grapefruit League game in Port St. Lucie, Fla. at 1:10 p.m. Johan Santana will make his second Spring Training start. Brad Penny gets the nod for the Dodgers.
The game can be seen on SNY or via the Web on MLB.tv.
Jose Reyes will DH and bat leadoff for the Mets. He’ll be followed by Anderson Hernandez (SS), David Wright (3B), Angel Pagan (CF), Olmedo Saenz (1B), Fernando Martinez (RF), Brady Clark (LF), Raul Casanova (C) and Gregory Veloz (2B).
Veloz is a 19-year-old infielder who played in Rookie ball and for the Mets’ Class A affiliate in Savannah last season.
According to Dodgers.com, Chan Ho Park, one of Los Angeles’ fifth-starter candidates, will also pitch.

Thank god we’re no longer at the point where the likes of Chan Ho Park are still in contention for the starting rotation.
I was at the game, Park reminded me of Trashel…sooooo sloooooooowwwwwww.
see mets fans, things could always be worse… chan ho park is a candidate for a teams 5th starter.
Looks like Saenz got his Visa issues takin care of…
Still no sign of Armas though, which is a concern given Duque’s health – or lack of
Well Pelfrey is on fire this spring, so I don’t see too much cause for concern.
By the way, does anybody actually like Chan Ho Park? The guy whined all spring last year about wanting a guaranteed shot at the rotation, and he finally gets it only to lead a freakin’ hit parade and promptly be yanked. The guy seems full of himself. Let it go, Chan Ho.
Pelfrey’s good, but the problem is depth to cover when the rotation can’t make their starts.
Just think how many different starting pitchers we’ve had to use by the end of May each of the last two seasons.
Can people relax about Pelfrey’s 5 innings so far. It’s 5 innings.
Oh, I thought we were taking a Joba Chamerlain approach to this. Are you trying to say that Pelfrey isn’t the second coming of Christ?
Are you forgetting his September?
Are you forgettin his April-August?
anybody gonna be posting live updates?
i’ll be watching until about 2:45 (class at 3) so i guess i can
thanks i dont need updates every 10 minutes but a score every once in a while would be nice
1st inning: santana walked first guy, got a comebacker, struck out andruw with a changeup and got a groundball to wright
reyes rolled over to the first baseman and ahern infield single up the middle wright at the plate
i’ll be trying to listen to my slingbox, but i’ve been swamped…i’ll do my best
The way things are going, this could be our opening day lineup.
Haha, weird. 7 seconds apart.
The way things are going, that might be the opening day lineup
Okay, that was very weird!!! Get out of my head!!!
top 1st,
lead off walk.
ground out.
strike out of andruw.
ground out.
can saenz go back to his visa problems? lol
lets see, reyes ground out
hernandez infield hit (tough play around 2nd)
wright base hit
walk to pagan
saenz double play
Ugh.
Bottom 1st,
Reyes grounds out,
Ahern single,
Wright single,
Pagan Walk,
Saenz double play, leaves 3 men on base
nice 1st AB by saenz. not.
nice to see DW clicking a bit more though.
saenz looks like a coach. jesus christ we are full of old guys.
Yeah… I was just looking at his stats earlier. The guy was horrible last year, and at 37, you wonder if he, too, is done.
Still, we didn’t lose anything by taking a look.
vargas is also on his way to NY…left hip discomfort
Johan struck out Andy LaRoche to start the 2nd
Ground Out by Ethier – 2 down nobody on.
Gary Bennet just crushed a double in the gap, Clark just missed making a nice diving catch
Double by Gary Bennett. Wind kept it from being a homer.
Endy could’a got that. :(
santana’s fastballs are between the belt and the letters, just asking for gap shots
single up the middle scores bennett
I am not to worried about where Johan is placing his fastball right now, he is a intelligent guy who knows exactly what he is doing. He is just working on some things right now.
yeah neither am i. just saying that’s why there’s been a few hard hit balls so far. his changeup looks fantastic.
passed ball, fmart to 3rd
I actually expect him to give up some homers this year but not big homers that cost us the game.
Single by Repko…1-0 Dodgers
Ground Out – Inning Over
2.0 ip 3 hits 1 R 1 ER so far for Johan.
People lets not jump off the ride we got on after the Johan trade just yet.
These Vets are coming up with injuries right now, but it may be calculated. I mean it just may be that if they went hard every day there is a greater chance the may actually injure themselves, for reals this time. I know we NY sports fans love to complain but come on, this is spring training which after all to a vetern is just practice, not a game, practice.
If our lineup looks as bad as it does when the games count I too will be nervous, but as of now I am really not getting worked up.
Good News for Bobby Murcer – biopsy shows scar tissue, not cancer…good news.
Thats great news.
FMart drills a leadoff double into the right center field gap, coulda been a triple. but he didnt wanna risk making the first out at third.
THM hits a double.
nice big 2B for FMart.
Little does he know, he may be starting for the Mets 4/1…
shhhhhhhh….
hey, maybe alou getting on that plane sparked something in little FMart and he will hit 1.000 from now on!
Has Kevin Mench been signed by anone yet?
yes, rangers
WP…Martinez to 3rd
that was a passed ball…bennett was slow getting down
Walk…1st and 3rd
runners on the corners…nobody out! big inning!!
good thing we have casanova and veloz!
this ST is a real education of our MiLB system!
Double Play…3-6…THM scores 1-1
bad slide by clark — i should say, good slide as it didn’t hurt him (see, e.g., abreu, gotay)
heh…brady clark trying to break up the double play…except there was no double play…missed the bag completely haha
Ground out by Veloz…inning over 1-1
Goddamit Veloz! The Season is riding on you!
Strike out by Santana to start the 3rd…
3 k’s in 2 and 1/3 innings..nice to see
2 more Ks.
Strike out by Santana…2 down…make that 4 k’s in 2 and 2/3.
Inning over…3 IP…3 H…1 R..1 ER…4 K’s…0 BB…nice outing by Santana…finally some good news.
Isn’t the line actually 3 IP 2 H 1 R 1 ER 1 BB, I am pretty sure he had a lead off walk in the 1st.
Man, Andruw Jones has the physique of the Philly Fanatic more and more each time I’ve seen him during this Spring Training.
my bad you are right HMF11…sorry about that
Thats alright, I wasn’t trying to be a jerk, just was wondering if he had walked someone instead of giving up a hit.
Register in for the Mets.
Register is pitching well this spring.
Nice outing by Johan.
Liking the Ks.
Pagan is a mad man!
the best news out of this ST so far is by far pagan. he is hitting the crap out of the ball and god knows we need the OF help.
I know Santana had a nice outing today, but it is concerning that his fastball only topped out at 91 MPH. Hopefully its just a matter of building up arm strength through the spring and not that last year’s rumors are true about Johan losing some zip on the fastball.
no need to be alarmed by anything other than, “after Johan’s outing today, he hopped on the wilpon’s private jet to visit dr. James andrews in Alabama”
Anything other than that, and this guy will dominate.
Source?
just hypothetical… a healthy spring outing is a successful spring outing. radar guns are useless in the regular season, even more useless in the spring.
I think he was saying, unless you hear that, don’t freak out… he’s not saying that happened
its his second outing, do you really want him hitting 95 on march 5th and ending up adding another one on the strained groin/hip/ankle list
wow that grammar sucks, and i didn’t mean to sound so agressive
Schoe looked real good there.
Teenage Dropped Fly Ball Machine
They have no idea what to ask Register. Very awkward.
i love when you see them take the headset off as fast as they can, like, “ugh thank god that’s over”
MLB.Com scoreboard sucks!!!!
Carlos Gomez is batting .182 this spring. Today against the Jankees he’s hitless in 3 at bats with one fielding error.
Just for informations sake.
And Lastings Milledge is one off the NL lead with 7 RBIs…
a.k.a. I see your meaningless statistic and raise you one of my own…
that came off as harsh… it was meant in fun :-)
:P
I wish Gomez all the luck in the world.
I also liked Milledge a lot and still do. I wish him slightly less luck than Gomez, though.
I wish Milledge all the luck in the world when he’s playing against the Phils and Braves – and none at all when he’s playing us ;)
Here’s some in-game reaction from Santana …
“I felt good. I feel better every day, every start. Today we were working on my changeup and some breaking balls and I felt pretty good, even though I was kind of rushing a little bit with my fastball. Everything was fine. We were able to make some adjustments and especially throw off-speed for first pitch.”
On the differences between today and first appearance, vs. the Cardinals: “Well, the first one, we tried to establish my fastball early in the game, but they were swinging right away. Today they swung, but I was able to throw strikes. Like I’ve said in the past, it’s always good to get that first one out of the way. Today I feel much better.”
On how much more velocity he’ll have on his fastball Opening Day: “It’s only the second game of spring training. We still have a long way to go. I don’t even know what my velocity is right now. It’s all about command, feeling the release point is there and controlling the corners. That’s about what I focus on. I don’t try to overthrow the ball.”
credit Adam Ruben for that btw
You missed the quote where he thanked Cerrone for helping him out with his change the other day.
Looks like the Mets will try to win their 5th in a row in their last at bat. Some real nail biters these kids have been playing
i mean must it be all tied up in the 9th inning of EVERY game? lol
Seems to be working out for us though :P
what, you didn’t know A’Hern is Mr. Clutch??
did he hit an HR or something, or just drive someone in?
double to score…someone…#90???
nice…good to know that hes still good for that one HR this year…would have been a shame if he wasted it in ST
hahahaha
i suppose…
he isn’t quite as predictable as Ordonez was, with is annual homerun, but he is certainly not a masher
