PSL: Alou has Strained Groin, Sore Hip
By Matthew Cerrone - Mar 5, 2008 1:13 pm

The Mets just announced that Moises Alou has a strained groin and has been sent to New York for as MRI.

it’s just all so hard to believe…Omar Minaya talked to reporters a few moments, details of which will likely appear on our favorite beat writer’s blogs, such as the Journal News, Newsday, and the Daily News.

    This is ridiculous. Utterly ridiculous.

    • gowrightgo says:

It is completely and utterly insane to hear of these injuries.

From the starters….we have yet to see Beltran and Castillo who both were recovering from surgeries from 3 months ago. Then camp brings a concussion to our Church, Schneider tweaks a hammy, Delgado gets his hip thing and still recovering from surgery himself and now Alou tweaks a groin. That is 6 guys out of our starting 8 positional players who either have not started their spring yet or are hurt as a result of some spring games.

The ole…”Its early” comment is nonsense. Its time to start preparing for the season.

Fortunately the pitching is healthy (Duque aside). I mean Duaner appears closer and Pedro has been popping his bullpens apparently and the rest are doing their thing getting ready for the season.

But even the backups have been going down. Gotay, Marlon Anderson, and Michel Abreu all hurt during spring games. Easly not ready to test the leg after his surgery. Valentin still on the mend after his surgery. Chavez and Ben Johnson nursing their way back to health after injuries from last season or from winter leagues

Its friggin ludicrous I tell you.

I have never seen or heard anything like this. If this is any indication of what is to come this year….we are all in trouble. This team will have an unbelievable rotation and solid pen with AA players in the field.

      • ArmandoReynoso says:

I agree, it’s time to start preparing for the season…
Unfortunately though, it also looks like it’s time to start panicking.

        • almar1965 says:

Maybe now Omar will learn a heavy lesson about going after older players.

          Or maybe not.

        • VCarver says:

Agreed. I got attacked often last year for whining about the age on the team, but I still believe age increases the risk of injury (as well as declining production).

That doesn’t mean the younger players won’t get hurt. It’s just that the the rate of injuries and DL stints are likely to be higher the older players.

That also doesn’t mean they shouldn’t acquire older players. It just means they should do so more judiciously and limit both the number of older players on the team as well as the years/dollars on contracts … and have adequate backup plans.

      • Ametfan says:

Can anyone say Lastings Milledge? I’ll bet he’s healthy.

        • VCarver says:

Well, in all fairness, Church will be fine and he essentially replaced Milledge. Even without the trade, the Mets would still have the same issue with Alou.

        • CaseStreet says:

I hear Carlos Gomez is healthy. Do you want him back, too?

        • thrilledge 4 prez says:

id take thrilledge or gomez over church any day….it should send up red flags that church couldnt even hold down a starting job for the nats.

        • VCarver says:

I think Church will have a better year this year with the bat than either Milledge or Gomez, both of whom as still raw, especially Gomez. Don’t get me wrong, I love Gomez. He’s just got a long way to go offensively.

Both Gomez and Milledge may have more upside, but for short term, I don’t think either would contribute more to the Mets than Church this season. Considering they got Schneider in the deal too, I think the trade was a good one.

And of course, I would do the Santana trade a million times over.

        • gipper913 says:

          Fire Ray Ramirez!!!!!

        • miker94 says:

I saw Carlos Gomez play today, I was at the Yanks/Twins game in Tampa and although Gomez is fast, he is simply horrible at the plate. He was 0-3, starting in centerfield, and looked completely overmatched at the plate each at bat. I’m glad he is gone.

      • Mike & The Dog will not stop talking about Xavier Nady. I’m on board with that, but at what cost. They could only be interested in our farm, which took a big hit over the winter. My solution is a trade with the orioles for Kevin Millar. He makes about 3 million this season. It makes sense for all the right reasons. He won with the Sox and he can put up decent numbers in a more than limited role. Especially if Delgado and Alou miss time. He is the righty bad we need and he could be motivated playing in the big apple for a team that is expected to win the pennant. Millar can play first and left field. Maybe Angelos continues the fire sale and is willing to part ways with Aubrey Huff.

        • FBones24 says:

haha…I know. Mad dog was saying the mets have to give up Pelfrey for Nady. Helooooo…the Mets wouldn’t include Pelfrey for Santana, why would they put him in a deal for Nady. Think mad dog.

        • x-nady says:

Thinking would, you know, require brains.

I would love Nady back (obviously), but you hit the nail on the head…”At what cost’?

If Sosa/Show can get Millar, or Thames I would do it.

        • kandiman says:

It’s not that The mets wouldn’t put Pelfrey in the Santana deal, its that Omar gave them the keys to the farm system to pick who you want, and the twins chose not to take Pelfrey.

I think that shows alot, based on the fact that the twins traditionally have one of the best scouting departments.

        • Danny says:

It doesn’t show anything other than the Twins being cheap and not wanting to pay a guy $1 million to possibly send Pelfrey to AAA to continue developing. Pelfrey’s agent is also Scott Boras.

It was a financial decision by the Twins.

        • ItsOurYear says:

When I heard about this i immediatly though about the X-Man. I like him when he was here and sad when he left. I would like him back, but w/o giving up Pelfrey.

    • BringTheAppleLeaveTheCowBell says:

Hey, let him get some injuries out of the way now. We all saw what he can do after he comes back. To act like this is some kind of surprise is crazy. We knew he’d get hurt , and if Omar didn’t expect it there’s something wrong with him.

      • Slob says:

This business of “getting injuries out of the way” is a logical fallacy. There is no correlation between getting injured now and not getting injured later. If anything, getting injured now would increase a player’s likelihood of getting injured later. Rushed recovery, overcompensation, and lost conditioning could all lead to more injuries down the road.

    • Giaco says:

      Opening Day Lineup 2008

      SS – Jose Reyes
      2B – Anderson Hernandez
      3B – David Wright
      C – Ramon Castro
      CF – Angel Pagan
      LF – Fernando Martinez
      RF – Brady Clark
      1B – Olmedo Saenz
      P – Johan Santana

      • helicopter ben johnson says:

even though that wont happen i just threw up in my mouth reading that

      • metsin080910 says:

        That’s your opening day line-up?

Beltran and Castillo are going to be ready for Opening Day. As will Church who is only out for a week. Delgado will also be ready for Opening Day, he says he feels better. The only one I agree with might be Fernando Martinez, if Alou is not 100%, I start Fernando and who knows if he does good, keep him there.

    • thrilledge 4 prez says:

      BONDS anybody?

    • Smitdogg21 says:

      Hello Barry Bonds

  2. Zoe says:

Oh good grief. Goooood friggin’ grief. Don’t get too depressed by the next confidence rating…

  3. followmelevi says:

Oh come on… this is just piling on now…

    • Maddogcf says:

From David Lennon, I think it kind of puts it in perspective:

“I have never seen so many injuries,” general manager Omar Minaya said.

With less than a month before Opening Day, the injuries here in Mets camp have reached epidemic proportions.Check out the holes in what was expected to be their lineup for March 31 against the Marlins.

      Jose Reyes (SS) …….. healthy
      Luis Castillo (2B) …….. OUT — knees
      David Wright (3B) ……..healthy
Carlos Beltran (CF) ….. OUT — knees
      Carlos Delgado (1B) …. OUT — hip
Moises Alou (LF) ………OUT — groin
      Ryan Church (RF) ……..OUT– concussion
      Brian Schneider (C) ……OUT — hamstring
Johan Santana (LHP) … pitching today, so presumably OK

  4. StrawberryCoke says:

The comments should be left just as it says-No comments

  5. MacD81 says:

Alou later told reporters, “me being hurt is the shock of the century. I mean, I should know, seeing as how I’m 100 years old.”

    ::rimshot::

  6. tfc3rid says:

    AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. tfc3rid says:

Fernando Martinez?? Starting OF’er… Opening Day 2008???

  8. Don says:

ok seriosuly between church’s lefties issues in RF, Alou inevitably being out, and delgado’s health and performance decline, i’ll repeat for the last time today to minimize my annoyingness a little. Get Thames. He can play corner OF and 1B. I’d take Nady first, but he doesn’t seem available. thames at least has been rumored. and of course Nick Johnson will be better than delgado in 08.

i’m really confused how the extra body for one of these spots was not addressed at all.

    • mikey_FF says:

Too much dependence on “veterans”. Way too much stock put into guys like Delgado and Alou.

    • therealsince86 says:

Look at Church’s career numbers vs. LHP. He is here to be the every day RF not platoon. Church’s numbers against LHP are better than Thames total numbers. .259 to .241.

  9. part09 says:

Sent to New York for a strained groin.

Can we fast forward 3 weeks please? I can’t go through this. We had our hopes about as high as possible with Santana, and now it feels as if the entire team is falling apart.

  10. StrawberryCoke says:

The Mets just announced next year they will be leaving Port St. Lucie For their new Spring Training Site-Senior living Nursing Home :)

  11. Andrew says:

You know… I actually predicted yesterday that he would get hurt today.

    Sorry, guys.

  12. boozermetsfan says:

I play OF and 1B for my Corporate Softball Team. I’m available.

  13. Tim in LA says:

How is something entirely predictable hard to believe? We’re relying on old people, and people get hurt. Still a much better team than last year.

  14. Another Matt says:

Ah well… at least we’re no longer waiting for Alou to go down.

  15. Peter says:

Someone check Jimmy Rollins for voodoo dolls!

  16. DaWrightStuff says:

oh why!?!?!?!? this team is literally held together by band-aids.

  17. gem779 says:

new confidence rating time, just cuz we haven’t had one in a while and I thought it was once a week.

  18. Steve Camas says:

I can’t understand why we have all of this “flying to NY for an MRI”, I’m thinking maybe, just maybe, there’s an MRI machine in Florida. Considering how things have been going, I’m surprised they don’t have one in the corner of the clubhouse.

    • Santanaman says:

Too funny, thanks for making me laugh

    • gowrightgo says:

I’ve thought that myself. There must not be a decent doctor in all of Florida. They certainly have the equipment there but no docs worthy of checking it?

      • backinbusiness says:

maybe we should fly the MRI tech/Dr down to PSL instead of the other way around. would save the mets a lot of $.

        • x-nady says:

Seriously, I can’t imagine sitting on a cramped airplane making an injury anything but worse.

    • Peter says:

I think it’s because they have a contract with the Big Boys at HSS (the Hospital for Special Surgery) and want to make sure that they send their investments to the best in the biz.

    • Another Matt says:

Like Peter said, plus, in the case of the likes of Alou, the HSS will have him fixed up before a Florida doctor could get even halfway through reading his medical history.

  19. ChiliGTC says:

you gotta be friggin kidding me? maybe Omar should bring in Brian McNamee…..

    • FBones24 says:

McNamee did well for Petite and Clemens. They have had successful careers, Clemens well into his 40’s. The guy must have done something right. ;)

  20. spadanko says:

i know it’s early and all, but c’mon

  21. who do we think will go down next? Im gonna take a darkhorse and go with Ahern

  22. Nightlife says:

    Good god.

Omar better be doing some work. We are going to need another SP and another OF before the season even starts.

  23. cbusmetsfan says:

So, right now Wright and Reyes are the only healthy starters? I think we can include Schneider in there since he has been catching the pitchers. But, what the crap? I hope Pagan is as good as he has been looking. This is so bad it is actually funny, in a weird sort of way.

    • hyperion4 says:

      Even Schneider has hamstring tighness.

By the way, nobody’s said anything about Castro, but there’s got to be a reason why, aside from one game, he’s only gotten in as a DH. Why are G. Molina, Robinson Cancel, Raul Casanova, and the guy who hit the BP homer off of Santana doing all the catching?

  24. kowalski69 says:

On that note — in my Mets Franchise for MLB 2k8 on the 360…

Alou has 4 HR in 4 Games.
Endy Chavez is out three months with a broken wrist running into the left field wall trying to catch a foul ball
Ryan Church pulled a hamstring running down a fly ball in the gap.

    Also,

The game has Alou starting in Right, Gotay in Left. Wise in the Bullpen, El Duque as the #5 starter. Marlon Anderson in Binghamton.

    • domosnacks5 says:

Get the roster updates off Xbox Live. It has Alou in left, Church in right, Santana the ace, etc.

It still has Anderson in AAA, and some Lugo guy in the bullpen or something. (Who is that supposed to be?)

      • Another Matt says:

That’ll be Ruddy Lugo – one of the Jacket’s reclamation projects. Doubt he’ll make the team.

    • boozermetsfan says:

what’s better – the show or 2K8. i have PS3 and have the show 07

      • Nightlife says:

The Show fo sho’. 08 is a VAST improvement over last years version. The graphics have been completely reworked and the gameplay has been tweaked enough to work out most of the kinks from last years game.

      • kowalski69 says:

2k8 has a funky new way to deliver pitches using only the right analog stick which is pretty cool, but takes getting used to.

I played it for about 2 hours yesterday and already am sick of Joe Morgan calling mets games for me. Also, the announcers are sometimes inconsistent.

I got santana to get 4 or 5 marlins straight to ground out to wright or reyes then one of them hit a popup. Morgan said “if they keep hitting popups like theyve been doing the whole game this is gonna be an easy one” or something like that. He also gets really excited at weird times.

Reyes and Ollie Perez look nothing like they really do, and they made ollie darker than anyone else on the team it looked like.

Also, a game 4 mets at braves got rained out in the first inning and the game told me to check the schedule for the doubleheader. I saved and went to the next scheduled game, which was the same game that just got rained out.

There’s some bugs but its a fun game. Im still learning it.

        • domosnacks5 says:

I don’t think Wright looks anythingl ike Wright, but I’m having fun playing it.

If I had a ps3 I would probably look into The Show though… The pitching and hitting interface is cool, and they changed the baserunning which is cool, but the fielding looks pretty garbage.

        • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

the show is so unrealistic, i simulated spring training and ended up with my “expected” opening day lineup. no one on the DL. just kidding the show is amazing and may be my only chance to see all 9 starters on the field at the same time.

  25. ChiliGTC says:

how many more days do we need to wait until we read that Santana blows out his elbow and is done for the season?

  26. domosnacks5 says:

Nick Johnson is no longer an option. It’s come out today that Dmitri Young now has diabetes which will affect his competition for first base with Johnson. Nats would be nuts to give up their other option at first base when they are not sure how Dmitri will react, especially to the Mets who are competing in the NL East.

We need Nady- somehow, someway. Screw Thames.

    • Nightlife says:

Uh, I thought it was always known that Dmitri Young had diabetes.

      • ArmandoReynoso says:

yeah, same article says he was diagnosed in ‘06. But he showed up to camp this yr at 298 lbs…

        • Nightlife says:

I mean, you also have to factor in that they did give Young a new deal too so there is definitely a chance they will still let go of Johnson. But knowing Bowden he will probably have some ridiculous demands.

        • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

fmart, pelfrey, smith, and player to be named later for johnson is probably the starting point for bowden.

        • Nightlife says:

I just keep thinking back to how dumb it was for him not to trade Soriano at the deadline in ‘06.

  27. Santanaman says:

OK Omar, do your magic. Make something happen here because this is what you are paid for….to fix problems.

This is our punishment for being so excited about this season. Not all is lost though, Duque has a new delivery……..

  28. damn, i was wrong. Word is Jason Vargas is going back to the doctor on the same flight as Alou. that didnt take long for another injury

    • hyperion4 says:

Vargas is actually not injured, but the airline was underbooked and would have canceled the flight unless one other Met boarded.

      Not.

  29. cbusmetsfan says:

I know the Mets can do nothing about breaks of bones or collisions in the OF but they need to reevaluate their medical/conditioning staff with all these muscle pulls and hamstrings and what not. Obviously, something is not getting done with the team to have all these, what seem to be, preventable injuries.

    • gipper913 says:

Yup. Fire Ray Ramirez chants at Shea this year!!!

    • hyperion4 says:

No trainer can do anything about Alou. He’s just an old guy.
Catchers like Schneider frequently get tightness in spring training because they’re doing so much squatting after a winter off. Abreu is the only other “pull” I can think of. Can’t blame the offseason surgeries of Beltran, Castillo, Valentin, and El Duque on Ray Ramirez, nor the injuries to Church, Anderson, and Gotay.

  30. Web says:

Do these guys stretch before they play?

  31. MacD81 says:

I propose a new nickname for Alou: “Tenderoni”

  32. mussi says:

we have the pieces to acquire some help..everyone stop freaking out..we have a month and we have Omar..we will b fine, Omar wont let us down.

  33. cbusmetsfan says:

Hey, at least Saenz is now playing…oh maybe not after an inning ending DP with the bases juiced.

  34. wolverine193 says:

Seriously, is anyone surprised? Alou is an injury waiting to happen. This is what happens when you stockpile your team with aging starters. Luckily this is all occurring at the beginning of spring training, but get used to it, this is an old team.

  35. ugbmets21 says:

i have been saying from day 1. we must get younger. castiilo 4 years? are they f***n nuts? getting santana was a need do to the fact that an ace never hits FA. but besides that, we need to get younger. NOW!

    • Santanaman says:

4 years for Castillo with Orlando Hudson a free agent after this year.

      • mikey_FF says:

The Castillo contract was stupid … as was the Easley signing. Omar works some magic … but also has some bad judgment sometimes. Well, he’s not perfect. He needs to stop relying on the veterans so much though.

    • shamsky says:

Santana and Castillo are buddies. Maybe Santana doesn’t sign a long term deal with the Mets if Castillo isn’t given a good contract?

  36. skillsets says:

Moises Alou being hurt is probably the least surprising news item I have ever heard.

  37. cbusmetsfan says:

Looking at the Mets farm, what do they have coming up at each position? 1st – nothing as we can see with the seriousness of the Delgado injury. 2nd – Castillo for 4 years? Nuts though that Tejada kid looks nice so maybe he supplants him in a couple years. SS and 3rd are good. CF should be good considering Beltran’s age but his body does not show this. Martinez will take over for Alou sometime and that’s about is. No catchers either on the horizon for Schneider. This team is old and broken down and one big injury away from falling out of contention.

    • Another Matt says:

Actually there’s a couple of catchers in the low minors. Just not for this year or next.

  38. Jova1931 says:

They’ll be okay. Alou does horrible in the Spring anyway. So consider this as rest for Alou. I think the most serious injury to consider would be Beltran’s and I think he will be fine. Let’s not get all worried seeing as it is only March 5th. March 26, however is a different story.

  39. StrawberryCoke says:

    Note to Omar
Trade the Bullpen tomato and pepper plants for backup 1B/OF.

  40. Don says:

yeah the castillo signing was omar during amateur hour. mind boggling actually. 4 years? pfffft.

    • cbusmetsfan says:

the only positive about Castillo signing is he and Santana are really good friends and maybe Santana does not come here if Castillo is not resigned…though signing for 2 years would have been much better than 4!

      • almar1965 says:

Yeah. You go ahead and believe that bull put out there by the newspapers before the trade happened. Fact is, no matter what the circumstances were, signing Castillo for 4 years was S-T-U-P-I-D!

Let’s see if Omar learns his lesson next season when he has to fill many spots. Although I am not holding my breath. Expect more 30+ year old starters to take over those spots that are vacant after 2008.

        • x-nady says:

You guys forget what the market was like out there at the time. Eckstien et al were all looking for ridiculous 4+ years at the time, thinking they could fleece Omar.

Omar had bigger fish to fry, so he locked up Castillo first to concentrate on other issues. Castillo was the best option at the time. It should have been a 2-3 year deal, but rather than have him test the market, Omar locked him down. If we get 2 solid years it will be a success. Besides, its only money.

  41. StrawberryCoke says:

F-Mart with a double -Pencil him in Left opening day!

  42. I’m actually waiting for the post that begins: “No one gets hurt. No one is on his way to New York for MRI. No one is waiting the results of his CT Scan.” That’ll be a good day.

  43. MDMetfan says:

Everyone going to Shea opening day should show up early and bring Geritol, ACE bandgaes, Ben Gay, Tylenol etc and toss it on the field during warm ups..

  44. SethH says:

How come they always have to fly back to New York for this stuff? Are there no MRI machines in Florida?

  45. cbusmetsfan says:

Name should be the NY Meds with this bunch of hospital patients!

  46. k-mets says:

What in the World is going on with the Mets. I not sure how this will shape out. I am not worried yet, but if by mid March, everyone is still hurt and no signs of improvement then I would start to worry.

Omar needs to start getting other position players asap.

  47. Santanaman says:

ESPN is reporting that the Mets have contacted reps for Sammy Sosa & Bonds……

    • zabado says:

As a big baseball (Metsies) and hockey (Rangers) fan, the contrast between injury sitiations is just so striking. Modern ballpayers are either unbelievable hothouse flowers, embarrasingly out of shape, or both. Hockey players are all in fantastic shape, and you have to sever their carotid arteriies to get them out of the lineup. These ball payers make a lot of money. They should earn it.

      • Santanaman says:

Great Hockey game last night. Too bad about the extra point but I thought we looked strong.

        • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

if thats true id rather have bonds for 1 year than sosa at least bonds can still put up the ridiculous OBP and is certainly feared alot more than sosa.

        • Another Matt says:

And everyone’s complaining the team’s too old?!!

    • Nightlife says:

Link? I can’t find it on the website.

As much as I don’t like the guy, Bonds would put the team over the top. Yeah his defense sucks and he can’t really run the bases, but his bat still makes up more than enough for those drawbacks. He is still going to get on base, slug and give you a .900+ OPS.

This is like doing a deal with the devil.

      I’ll pass on Sosa.

      • Nightlife says:

And get this about Bonds, he’s played in 256 games in the last two seaons to Alou’s 185.

        • Nightlife says:

Whoops, should have looked at something to give Alou a fairer comparison to Bonds and that would be the last two seasons PAs.

          Bonds PA: 970
          Alou PA: 738

Now games played in the field last two seaons.

          Bonds: 226
          Alou: 176

        • Another Matt says:

Do they keep stats for ‘balls let drop due to slowness and sandbagging’?

    • MDMetfan says:

They can platoon in right! LOL

  48. dave27 says:

    Alou + Duque = Gravy.

Please proceed, Omar, as if they are not here.

  49. Jim says:

At the rate we are going and the price of Jet fuel wouldn’t it be cheaper to bring the MRI machine to Tradition field?

  50. zen says:

it’s a given that alou will miss 90+ games, delgado 20+, and el duque 10 starts. it comes down to whether or not the rest of the core remains healthy. any significant injury to another key position player or pitcher will be devastating.

    • Saltzy23 says:

I agree. Everyone needs to chill out. Its March 5th. Almost a month till opening day. Im not freaking out yet.

      • cbusmetsfan says:

That mentality sounds like the same mentality a lot of rose colored mets fans had last September during the collapse – “don’t worry about it, everything will be okay. We’re up by 7 with 17 to go.” Compare that with – “don’t worry about the dozen injuries to key players. It’s only March 5th and we have 3/1/2 more weeks until the season starts.” Very similar, don’t you think?

        • zen says:

you expected alou, el duque, and delgado to be healthy? all have missed significant time the last three year. which other key player are you worried about?

don’t be paranoid. enoy the season. last year i was crushed for a few weeks at the end. you probably didn’t enjoy any of the season. is that better? it’s supposed to be fun.

        • Saltzy23 says:

I worry when losses start piling up. Its all speculative right now. I cant get worried about something that hasnt happenes yet. I look at the Sox and Shilling is an issue. The Yanks have problems to deal with. The Phils have Lidge hurt. Let the season start to unfold before you diagnose. All Im saying.

        • cbusmetsfan says:

          From Newsday:

          Jose Reyes (SS) …….. healthy
          Luis Castillo (2B) …….. OUT — knees
          David Wright (3B) ……..healthy
Carlos Beltran (CF) ….. OUT — knees
          Carlos Delgado (1B) …. OUT — hip
Moises Alou (LF) ………OUT — groin
          Ryan Church (RF) ……..OUT– concussion
          Brian Schneider (C) ……OUT — hamstring
Johan Santana (LHP) … pitching today, so presumably OK

Now let’s look at the projected bench, too:

          Ramon Castro (C) ……….. healthy
Ruben Gotay (SS) ………. OUT — ankle
          Damion Easley (INF/OF) .. OUT — ankle
          Endy Chavez (OF) ……….. OUT — hamstring/ankle
Marlon Anderson …………. OUT — bruised chest

Then, we have El Dueque; Sanchez coming off his rehab. We can throw Valentin in there also. Face it, this team is a medical mess and will not be full strength until May or June, if lucky. By then, they could be far in a hole with no way out unless the pitching staff only gives up 2 runs a game. I’m just being a realist now a pessimist.

        • zen says:

fair enough. don’t you think the mets are just playing it safe b/c its spring training?

        • stickguy says:

Actually, the mets pitching staff has the potential to carry the team even with a low scoring offense for a while.

So, it is conceivable they are in or around 1st place on 6/15, then have the offense start clicking and become a raging machine!

          Or not…

        • Another Matt says:

          Of that list:

Delgado, Church, Schneider, Chavez & Anderson all seem likely to be playing within a week. Castillo and Beltran both have a chance of doing so, and both will definitely be ready by March 31.

Of those 7, 5 are veteran players that don’t need a full spring schedule to be 100% ready, and Chavez is used to pinch hitting so also presumably shouldn’t take long to establish his timing.

Gotay’s presumably gonna be ready soon, my understanding is the team’s concerned was mostly based around seeing the shadow of an old injury in his X-ray.

Easley’s reporting that he’ll be ready to play soon.
Duaner’s a worry at this point, but even without him our bullpen looks at least as good as it was last year, maybe better with Wise for Mota.

That leaves only Alou as an unknown. And it’s such an unknown that he could be jumping off the plane tomorrow ready to play – it makes sense for the club to treat him with extreme caution at the stage since he’s both such a known injury risk and such a valuable player when healthy.

I guess the Mets could take all single-A guys on ST road trips and argue that there are 4 ML starters in there somewhere

All of these spring training injuries are scaring me…the regular season hasn’t even started and all these guys are already hurt. Who the hell’s the trainer for the Mets

Never want to see the A-holes Bonds and Sosa in Mets uniforms…NEVER.

    Let’s get Julio Franco.

    • andyglass1 says:

with you on big head, but slamming sammy does that crazy little dance after every flyball to the OF. supposedly julio makes a great liquid protein shake…. can you imagine barry trying to claim the videotron (big screen) is his private tv for his use only ?

  58. NYCESQ says:

Kenny Lofton is still unsigned. I wouldn’t mind picking him up as outfield insurance. As helpful as Bonds may be for our lineup, I think he would change the image of the team. The Mets do not need any type of distractions, and with his ensuing date with the judge…that is exactly what he will be. His bad publicity is our worst enemy.

  59. goheels42 says:

ESPN just reported Alou is out 4-6 weeks, needs surgery.
