Here is where Willie really hurts the Mets. Instead of sensibly carrying 11 pitchers and allowing an extra position player on the roster, the Mets need 12 pitchers to try and cover for Willie's inability to manage a staff.

As of right now, Church and Delgado lack adequate backups.

That is where the new baby cost him. Didn't he miss a couple of weeks of ST to go home? Figure that all the time getting in a groove that he missed carried over into April.

I am not saying that if he comes for the price of just Show and he knows that he is a backup at best then maybe. But, even then we will miss even last year's Delgado compared to Thames. Delgado's OBP was 50 points higher last season which by the way was the lowest of his career because of a horrible April.

Second question, if Delgado is in such severe decline then how did he manage to hit over .320 in July and September? If anything he was just incosistant like always. I posted this earlier this year but if you take out April he hit .274 with 23 HR with about a .350 OBP.

Come on the guy has a .278 OBP. He adds nothing more than a backup. Easley is a better option if healthy than Thames.

Why would you trade away a Sosa or a Show, who have some value, to obtain a player who's ceiling is Delgado's floor?

Thames had 269 ABs last year... it's very unlikely we'd give him that many, let alone more.

Delgado hit .258 last season over the whole year - but in the second half he hit .285. He'd have to be significantly worse than his second half of last year to be as bad as Thames.

If you're going to give away a player who was certain to see significant action, make sure you get back someone you're comfortable seeing a lot of. Another poster has been advocating Kendry Morales who seems to me a vastly better proposition.

Delgado is on a serious decline. he has a hip issue too, on top of last year's hand issue, and the broken hand he got in game 162 as well.

i think thames in the lineup every day can be comparable to Delgado prodcution. his HR per AB ratio is among the elite in the league. He can easily hit 25 HR. Delgado will hit the same amount if healthy. Delgado isn't going deep 30 times. Thames is going deep more than 20 if he gets his AB's, look at his power numbers.

so maybe delgado has .10 on him for batting average. delgado has to prove he can play first.

plus look at Thames' splits versus lefties. it isover .300. That sounds like a guy wo can platoon effectively versus lefties with Church. Plus Alou inevitably will go down. It really makes a lot of sense.

it isn't crazy talk, it is a plan B. play GM, what is your plan b for first base?

I say Delgado hits .250. I may be wrong, but assuming I am not, Thames won't be far off that mark at all, and could hit that if he gets more AB's. His power numbers certainly are comparable to Delgado when looking in the 2008 context.

It had to be the hand (I also want to say the birth of his child might have messed him up last season, who knows) because I remember Delgado's wheelhouse being down and in, something he was terrible at least year.

Sounds like I'm pole-jockin' Delgado, but really... I think we'll be praising him this year... Don't ask me how or why, but we will. :-)
