By Matthew Cerrone - Mar 5, 2008 9:21 am

i just watched Orlando Hernandez working on his delivery with Rick Peterson and Company…he then moved to the field to do some light throwing, using the new style…he is scheduled to throw from a mound at some point this morning

    He’s Done.

not to knock the Jacket, El Duque or their abilities… but the man has been throwing with the high leg kick for his entire career, how can you adjust a 40-something year old man’s delivery style that’s almost second nature to him?

    • reyesnwright says:

Sometimes pitchers like El Duque are not really helped by their unique windups but use them just because they have become known for them. When Nomo threw his no hitter for the Dodgers, he ptiched from the stretch from the 4th inning on because the mound was slippery. He was asked why he would continue to use his wind up after that and he said because he had always been known as the Tornado”
Last year Duque had a batting average against of .188 with runners on base (pitching from the stretch) and .216 with no one on (pitching from the wind up). I’m not saying this is necissarily going to help him, he may be done, but if he can work on and master a more controlled wind up, he may be OK.

If he is changing his windup, he’s going to need time… Keep him in extended Spring Training… Pelfrey is number 5.

I agree with that, but who goes after Pelfry if someone else goes down? We are very thin in the option department.

I’d knock on the Lohse door. He might not be great, but I’d take him over the Brian Lawrence-types of the world.

  4. stickguy says:

Yeah, put him on the 60 day DL if they are rebuilding him from scratch.

Also, I worry that without the leg kick, it will be easier for hitters to pick up the ball, and since he doesn’t have overwhelming stuff, it could get ugly.

And who knows if he will have the same velocity and movement (plus assorted junk) out of the new motioin.

Anyway, I can’t believe that the new wind up will take that much pressure off the toe. Just go get the dumb thing fixed now, and start rehab ASAP>

  5. CaseStreet says:

It seems that the new kick will keep him off his right toe which is the problem. I wonder how difficult it is to change your kick. I’d imagine that it’s like any other part of pitching. Pitchers are asked to change delivery (arm slots, foot placement, etc.) all the time. Why would this be different or more difficult?

  6. chaseh says:

This is a desperate attempt to see if he can overcome a foot issue that will never go away without surgury and rehab. Such that at his age he probably wouldn’t pitch again.

He might be able to pull it together for some bullpen time, but slap me in the butt with a salmon if he ever starts again.

I hope I am wrong but I think El Duque is finished. It seems like the mets are grasping at straws with this delivery.

A little OT: Isn’t Santana starting today?

sign kyle lohse is it really that hard? the guy is a pretty standard 5th starter nothing great but for the 5 hole hes fine. pelfrey is the 6th man which will give him time to develop and start in the bigs when someone (pedro) goes down or needs rest. duque is DONE! honestly just put him on the DL and see if hes ready to go late in the year ala pedro of 07 bc theres NO WAY he would make it through the year.

Also, considering the holes we’ll have in the rotation next year (El Duque definitely gone, Ollie and Pedro possibly gone), it wouldn’t be a bad idea to sign him, even on a 2-year contract.
