…earlier today, i watched Willie Randolph, Guy Conti and Jerry Manuel lead a group of outfielders, pitchers and infielders in a fly-ball and cut-off drill…
…as you can see in the video below, willie held court, explaining to each position what it is they should be doing from the field…how to make the call…why to make the call…where to be…and to be loud…players asked questions, and he answered…conti talked to the pitchers about backing up bases, after throws have been made…they talked for a good five minutes or so…John Maine took a knee, and seemed quite attentive…actually, they all were, for the most part…
…willie broke up the group, each player manned his position, and conti jumped behind the fly-ball machine, while barking orders to people…it sounded like any baseball camp, from Little League to college…it felt no different…
…by the way, Jose Valentin was working out at first base…

John Maine is gonna be on the HotList today on ESPNEWS
Hopefully he doesn’t get hurt !
John Maine….he’ll strike you out if he wants to…
nice into there matt! camera work was better that time too… good for jose valentin to be working out at first base that might be a way for him to make the team. especially if gotay is out.
PSL is like a M*A*S*H unit…..
Fellow Mets Fans,
Unrelated, but I had to post this. Because we can’t post any links here any more google:
“4for4blog”
Then click on the 2008 archive to the right. First post about Reyes.
Basically this genius is saying Reyes is overrated because 4 offensive statistics were comparable to shane victorino with 150 less AB’s. Unbelievably bad logic on so many levels.
Please feel free to give this guy a thorough blasting.
He’s a Phillie fan. You didn’t expect his logic to stand up, did you?
I suppose your right. But if you have the moxie to set up a sports blog, you should at least have a basic knowledge of statistics & baseball.
I guess thats too much to ask these days.
One interesting thing that I noticed when looking up Victorino’s stats to pick that guy apart was how much less “able” to get out of the way of pitches he is than Reyes. (24 HBP over the last 2 seasons vs. 2)
So, I looked it up… the Phillies topped the NL in HBP last year, second only to Kansas City in the majors.
Now, I can believe that KC’s hitters just aren’t able to get out of the way of pitches… but the Phillies? Come on umps… call ‘em out when they’re diving in.
How is FMart during these drills, because from everything I’ve seen in spring training and read is that he can’t catch.
Get some glasses. He’s made at least 2 great diving catches.
And, he dropped two easy flies in his last two games. And, his diving catches, yeah, saw them. If ran better routes and had a sense of where the ball was coming off the bat like a skilled outfielder, he wouldn’t have had to dive. I’ll give him a break because he is only 19, but I am not going to discount the scouts who say in the end he will end up at 1B.
Matt,
You need one of those super mikes so we can hear what they’re saying!
Our own one-man mobile-uplink unit!
LOL – good SNL reference.
Seriously, these vignettes for PSL – whether just posts or photo and video are some of the best work that Metsblog has done.
This just in- Matt Cerrone has a torn ligament in his right leg and a sprained ankle on left foot as well as a pulled groin from leaning on the dugout – is being flown back to NYC for MRI updates will follow! :)
Valentin at 1B!!!! what a great idea why didn’t i think of that??
