Note: El Duque Could Pitch this Weekend
By Matthew Cerrone - Mar 6, 2008 8:50 am

Willie Randolph told reporters yesterday that Orlando Hernandez could pitch in a game this weekend, since the pitcher threw a solid 45 pitches in a bullpen session yesterday.

well, i hope so…but, i’ll believe it when i see it

as has been noted, el duque is working on a new delivery…it’s less violent…instead of the high leg kick, he simply brings his knee to adjust over 90 degree angle, raising his hands and leg in tandem, while keeping his body in perfect balance, before going to the plate

To check out some video and photos of El Duque’s new delivery, which I shot earlier in the week, click here and here.

For more on El Duque, including quotes from Rick Peterson, read David Lennon’s report in the Daily News.

Forget pitching…can Duque play Left Field?

I hope his first outing is televised for comedic effect…

I cant imagine that a ST game is where you want to test a new delivery while throwing at 50-75% effort.

I’d rather spring training than a regular season game right? Where else should you test it? BP and bullpen sessions are meaningless.

I read that this new delivery was Pedro’s idea and it mentioned Pedro’s toe problems of the past. Since I have commented recently about how we had heard at the time that Pedro’s toe problems are chronic and that we might be in for a bumpier ride this season with him than is being discussed, I wonder if Pedro has tweaked his delivery to minimize the toe issue. I would love to hear more about that . Matt, maybe ask him, since you’re his “new buddy”.

pitchers are supposed to be in camp a week or so before hitters… at this point, the duke is so far behind that we should be pro-active and give pelf the #5.

  5. amen1986 says:

Matt is BFF with Johan, not Pedro. Pedro only gives him a “good morning”. I’ve read that Pedro is still wearing a customized shoe to keep his toes in good shape.

    • Nate W. says:

not to mention, Pedro’s assorted adjustments to his delivery are what led to his shoulder giving out the rest of the way.

roll tape on this one…El Duque will pitch one inning of relief this weekend and everyone will start speculating that he’s going to the bullpen

I really don’t understand why instead of changing his delivery, he just doesn’t go and get the bunion taken care of surgically? Having unfortunate personal experience with this, they have made great strides in the surgical procedure to fix bunions, and the recovery time is probably equal to what Alou is looking at. Why not just get it fixed once and for all and not have to worry about it any more?

    • mza4eva says:

because according to him it would take 2 years to rehab from it

    • mza4eva says:

The surgery would require major restructuring of the bones in the foot, moving bones around, shaving them down, etc

  8. Ferraro41 says:

That’s interesting. I had what was called a “Grade 3″ bunion on my right foot, supposedly one of the worst kind. I had the surgery, which certainly included shaving the bone down, and I was back up running on my treadmill in 6 weeks. Granted, I’m not a professional athlete, but two years seems ridiculous.
