Matthew Cerrone

Note: Valentin and Brady Clark at 1B
By Matthew Cerrone - Mar 6, 2008 9:34 am

In 22 at-bats this spring, Brady Clark is hitting .360 with two RBI in seven games for the Mets.

Clark has never played any other position except outfield during his major-league career.

However, he will receive a first-baseman’s glove today, as he has been granted the opportunity to try out at the position.

Yesterday at camp, Jose Valentin worked out at first base as well.

Valentin has played just only game at first base, in 2006.

Granted the opportunity??? That’s a death sentence!

So what is this supposed to mean? Are we already anticipating a Delgado-less season? I guess Saenz isn’t making the big league roster (good!)

Regardless of anyone’s health, the more people that can backup 1B, the better. Versitility is never a bad thing.

Valentin can do any job you ask him to in a professional way.
I hope he gets it.

MAN - How many concussions do there need to be before the Mets decide that playing people out of position is a bad idea??!?

Beltran and Cameron collided b/c they both had CF mindsets. Cameron should have deferred to Beltran but he did not.

Church and Marlon A. collided b/c Marlon is no first baseman. He said something along the lines of “I didnt know Church was so close” and was very casual in the moments before the crash, not attempting to see where Chruch was or to change course. He looked like someone in a sotfball league.

This is a joke. The Mets need a FIRST BASEMAN, not somebody who has a first baseman’s glove.

first base is one of hte most underrated defensive position. I’d love to have a defensive guy like old number 17 back over there, grabbing the balls down the line, stretching out to make the play, pouncing on the bunts.. alas, another part of a bygone era. Now the big guy who can’t play anywhere else goes over there, cuz he just has to catch the ball, right?

That’s less likely to happen with Clark because Clark is a corner outfielder by trade, and understands that right fielders charge shallow flies. Marlon, though he’s played the outfield for us, is a natural middle infielder, and really more of a pinch hitter besides.

at this point why not bring back piazza and slap another 1B glove on him…at we kno he can rake, unlike these other jabronis theyre gonna try out at 1st…and throw some cash at bonds, why not, one year cancer in the clubhouse, he wont even have to lead, we have enough leaders on this team

Piazza can’t rake anymore. He only hit 8 home runs in 300+ at bats last season. Anderson or Valentin can do that and play better defense.

and he sucks at 1st base. Piazza in done. The guy needs to retire gracefully. There is a reason why none of the 30 major league clubs didn’t sign him to a major league contract. Not even the Royals.

Is Piazza any worse at 1B than Delgado?

Yes.

No guarantee you get a full year of Bonds.

Aside from the fact that he’s two years older than Moises Alou, there’s also the small matter of court proceedings.

Somebody get Keith’s glove out of mothballs and put him at first base. Even at his age, he’s not as fragile as these clowns.

He was defensively better than Delgado last year, and he’s a singles machine. I’ll take him!

I think I read that Clark played 1st base in the Arizona Fall League… a looong time ago… but at least he’s played the position before
