…well, i’m at the airport – heading home after spending the last six days in Port St. Lucie blogging about the Mets…
…before hitting the highway, i swung by Tradition Field in hopes of catching Pedro Martinez’s simulated game…
…unfortunately, he was on pedro time, and i needed to hit the road before he took the mound…so i missed it…
Martinez threw 53 pitches to four hitters and told reporters afterwards that he felt good, but was disappointed to not be pitching in a real game.
Brian Schneider did the catching.
For more on his simulated game, check out the Star-Ledger, Newsday, the New York Post and the Daily News.
…i was able to catch pedro making his way to the field, during which he was laughing and talking and talking…seriously, he’s always talking…he seems very comfortable in camp, to say the least…he strolled to the outfield and did some stretching, while Billy Wagner and Aaron Heilman pitched simulated innings…most interesting was watching Johan Santana play outfield, protecting martinez who did some stretching and long tossing…santana and pedro joked around, gave each other the fist bump and johan fielded the position…he seemed in to it…by the time pedro took the mound, Fred Wilpon, Rick Peterson, Willie Randolph, Omar Minaya, tons of reporters and players, including Jose Reyes, all stood by and watched him work…
…ok, that’s it from me…i’ll be in the air through most of the afternoon…thank you for the support, compliments and kind words throughout these last few days…i appreciate it…and Lets Go Mets…

THAT’S IT!!! SANTANA CAN BE OUR 4TH OUTFIELDER!!! OUR PROBLEMS ARE SOLVED!!!
53 PITCHES TO 4 HITTERS?!? am i missing something
I think it just means he faced a 4 man lineup and threw 53 pitches. So the 4 hitters each hit more than once.
thank goodness cus pedro wouldnt make it through 2 innings at that rate.
Matt, they need to keep you down there longer next year. Like two weeks. I’ll miss all these quirky tidbits and insights you’ve been throwing into your stories that gives us better insight into who these players are. Sometimes you get that from the beat reporters but it’s really limited.
Thanks a bunch.
… things like Pedro’s bling car … the french toast in the morning (I luv french toast) … Penny staring you down! … that’s the stuff I want to read about … priceless.
I’m curious as to what Penny thought Matt was doing. I have never been under the impression that he was particularly sophisticated–seems like a big hick, really–but I have no doubt that he’s seen a laptop before, and I am pretty sure he knows what blogging is, so why the fascination with Matt at work? Did he think Matt was some member of the paparazzi doing a piece on Alyssa Milano’s ex’s, or something?
Seriously, though–great job, Matt. You showed us the angles nobody else did. I look forward to more such things in the future.
Man, I loved Baseball Simulator 1000. I played the hell out of that game when I was a kid. I think I prefer that and Ken Griffey Jr Presents Major League Baseball to all modern baseball games (me and my buddies still fire up Griffey on emulators on the weekends).

I was just thinking the same thing, I probably lost a year of my life playing that game.
Gotta echo the sentiment of VCarver. We’ve lived through you, and they need to keep you down there for at least two weeks next year.
Nah, send me down instead. But really its been great reading all this stuff…great insight and tidbits.
Two weeks? He needs to be down there for the entire month right up until opening day. Who cares about family, friends and other responsibilities. I need honest reporting!!!
only thing better then you being down there would be if they give you access as Shea…
Congratulations on a wonderful experience for us all. You writing from camp has been amazing. I’ve enjoyed every bit of it. I will be in Port St. Lucie tomorrow, of course I can’t wait, and your writing has gotten me even more excited!
Great job down there Matt! Thanks for all the insight and inside info.
baseball simulator, hands down GREATEST game EVER for Nintendo, bought an old school nintendo rip off on ebay and have a nice 6 player tourney goin right now lol
funny how old games are better than the new ones
Excellent job Matt…some of the “day in the life” tidbits were among the best work you have done!
Matt, thanks a ton for the great work you did down there this last week. I read everything you wrote and enjoyed every bit of it. I was able to experience your wide eyed new experiences as if I was you. Thats how great you wrote about it as well at the pictures, etc.
This is what you do best, the true nature of the blog. You are a fan just like us no matter what age we are and you are giving us these fresh experiences through your eyes. The newspaper sports writers do their set pieces which include interviews, research, observations and news worthy stuff. Which is great also BUT you give it to us just like we would feel if we were you. Fans addicted to the Mets, our hero’s. Your enthusiasm and eye for what we want is right on!!!!
I felt like a boy of spring again….through your eyes and words.
Keep up the good work and be sure to get down there next year and keep the camera….SNY has plenty of them.
you can make an argument that the main reason the mets lost in the playoffs in 2006 and lost the division in 2007 was the health of pedro and duque.
you can make the argument that 2008 is alos dependent on the same issue
This season won’t have anything to do with El Duque’s health. He is the 5th or 6th starter on this team.
The reason the team lost in 06 was not due to poor starting pitching. It was due to a lack of clutch hitting and one nasty curveball.
GM 2: Maine: 4ip 4r
GM 3: Trex: 1ip 5r
GM 4: Ollie 5.2ip 5r
GM 5: Glavine: 4ip 3r
In all fairness, in the games they lost in the NLCS, starting pitching was NOT the issue (with the exception of Trachsel’s stinker).
Game 2 — Maine gave up just 3 ERs. The Mets led when he left the game. It was Mota and Wagner who gave it away.
Game 3 — Trachsel stunk.
Game 5 — Glavine gave up 3 ERs which is not bad. The Mets lost 4-2 and they just didn’t score.
Game 7 — Ollie pitched a gem. The Mets lost 3-1 on the homer off Heilman.
They won game 4 where Ollie gave up the 5 runs. Could Pedro have made a difference? Hell, yeah. He instead of Trachsel would have been big. But overall I really don’t think starting pitching was a bigger issue than the pen or untimely hitting in the NLCS.
If the Mets’ had either one of those pitchers healthy in 06′ they might have been World Champs, but c’mon, we have Santana. I wouldn’t mind throwing Santana in game one, Maine in game 2 and Perez in game three. But that will not happen, Martinez will stay healthy!
Great job, Matt! And kudos to SNY for making it happen.
Wow, time flies when your having fun I guess. It felt like just yesterday you were making u-turns on your way to getting to your hotel.
thanks for making this so interesting matt on my favorite website!
Job well done, Matt.
I learned alot of things thanks to you. Probably not as much as the WEALTH of stuff you learned, but interesting nonetheless.
