In a post to Always Amazin, Matt Artus takes a look at the team’s ‘leftover’ players in camp, from Ruben Gotay to Ricardo Rincon to Matt Wise.
According to Metstradamus, if the Mets have interest in
acquiring a softball player, like Barry Bonds, they should look in to Team USA’s Jennie Finch or Nintendo’s Dusty Diamond.
Lenny Dykstra was a recent guest on HBO’s Real Sports. For more, check out Hot Foot.
In a post to Mets Fever, Ed Ryan wonders if it could be time to move Carlos Beltran to left field.
…we’re not there yet…however, this will come up in discussion more and more over the next few years, especially if the Mets can acquire a center fielder, while shifting beltran to left…in fact, i would not be surprised to hear more about this one year from now, when Moises Alou is a free agent…
In the New York Times, Ben Shpigel describes the scene in Tradition Field yesterday, which turned in to Fenway South.
…by the way, a few weeks ago, i purchased the Rotoworld Draft Kit, which recently won an award from the Fantasy Sports Trade Association…i just finished my fantasy draft, but, if you are still preparing, i highly recommend it…

No reason to do that. Fmart and Church will be fine for the corners. Now if you are going to change his position, why not change him to a 1B? Church and Fmart have both played CF and corner. Bring in another OF bat and replace Delgado with Beltran. (Right, a GG CF moving to 1B, ha ha)
wow I already got nothing done at work before, now I’ve got that dusty diamonds baseball .. productivity for today just took a big hit!
baseball aka softball
the beltran to LF makes sense. But for 2009, only if they hae a CF that makes it logical. maybe if Gomez was still here, and getting slotted in for 2009. I don’t think F Mart is good enough to push him over though.
Of course, if his knees aren’t up to the task, they will need to move him sooner rather than later.
Why would you move him? I can see it if his knees demand it, or if Andrew or Torii suddenly found themselves in Queens, but that’s it. He’s not the best ever, but he did win a gold glove last year.
I would guess they will try to tough it out with Beltran in CF for 2009, but ask the Yankees how they went with Damon…
Church and FM are the most logical answers, but I think they might end up with an OF made up of three RF’s. Church throws lefty, so he would be my first choice to switch to 1B if it comes to that. If Pagan continues his play into the season he might be the obvious answer, he is still young enough to avoid a bench player tag.
Its a slight to Beltran’s throwing arm to call him a LF, he would be one of the best (defensive) RF in baseball right now even with his bad knees. Or did he have his elbow’s clean out too?
To call Gotay a “leftover” would be undervaluing him. He’s quite a talent!
Can’t believe you guys are still talking about Gomez. You would think that being regular readers here would make you more knowledgeable about the game but I guess not.
On another note, Matt, you can’t say you had your fantasy draft and not list your picks. That’s a tease. C’mon, post it.
I don’t think stickguy was complaining about Gomez not being here. I may be wrong, but I think he was just saying that moving Beltran and replacing him with F-Mart would be a downgrade in CF, while replacing Beltran with a true CF like Gomez would make sense.
Ed Ryan says we liked Ty Wigginton for being a blue-collar, hard-nosed player…? Did anyone else think that? I think he’s smokin crack.
some interesting tidbits from Malo’s article.
“Robert Parnell, RHP
People look at the right-hander and see his power arsenal — fastball/slider — and the fact that his third pitch, a changeup, is behind the other two and say he belongs in the bullpen. He throws in the low- to mid-90s and can touch 97 mph, and there’s little doubt that in a short relief role, he’d be in the upper-90s consistently.
But here’s the thing. Parnell can maintain his velocity deep into games and that’s something that isn’t easily found. So the Mets are inclined to leave him in a rotation, at least for now, so he can continue to work on all of his pitches and stay in the same routine. He’ll do that in Binghamton, and perhaps after this year, if the changeup doesn’t come around, a switch will be made.”
sounds like the Mets have a potential Joba like guy if they have a need in the pen late in the year. Or if he stays on track he might even be a fill in starter in August of Sept. I’m beginning to like the idea of Niese or Parnell replaceing Duque in the rotation rather than signing a big free agent. Of course I always like the AA starters too much…
Malo: “Eddie Kunz will hit the ground running and dominate Binghamton and New Orleans, reaching the Mets’ bullpen by the All-Star break. Brant Rustich’s transition to starting won’t go nearly as well and the Mets will move him back to the ‘pen right around the time Kunz hits Shea.”
interesting point seeing how the Mets have so many relievers ahead of Kunz, but it makes sense if he dominates AA the way everyone seems to think he will.
If you’re thinking about buying the draft guide, don’t.
Not only do they have Jeter as more valuable then Sizemore, they have Markakis above Ortiz.
